FREE pit pass with purchase Chaplain Dan’s Chapter The long dirt nap I t’s ironic how certain things happen and how our mind works. Not less than 24 hours earlier, we were traveling down Route 30 as Claire was reading to me an article about no whining outside the pearly gates as you take that long dirt nap. It was an article in a club newsletter from Bay State Corvairs about not having enough time to drive your Corvair. Less than 24 hours later, I am riding along the same stretch of road — not in our van, but in the back of an ambulance. I began thinking how fortunate I have been in my life. Not only have I driven and raced many Corvairs, but also some of the most unusual ones ever made. I thought about how the Lord has blessed me with a good wife and with the ability to experience good times with my family. While riding, I realized all that the Lord has allowed me to accomplish during my life. I wonder at some of them because I know that if you had told me that I would have done some of these things, I probably would have laughed and never believed it. My thoughts raced ahead as I wondered if I have accomplished all that the Lord wanted me to do. The verse in Matthew 24:44 came to mind: “Therefore be ye also ready in such an hour as you think not, the Son of man will come.” This must be a reason people are always making lists of things they want to accomplish in their lifetime, and yet it is not what we can get for ourselves that matters but the things we have done for our family, our friends, and others. It is often the seemingly insignificant things we do in life without even thinking that enrich the lives of people the most in the long run. A peace came over me. I realized that the Lord had much more for me to accomplish and — Dan and Claire Laterza, RFC that one day when it does come time to take that long dirt nap, I can say with the Apostle Paul: “I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith.” (2nd Timothy 4:7) It all comes down to a simple fact! Like Solomon, we should all strive to fear and revere God and keep his commandments because this is the whole duty of man. God shall bring every work into judgment with every secret thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil. In His Service, Chaplain Dan and Miss Claire P.S. I have not finished driving Corvairs yet or personally spoken to all of Division 1. The bounty has already been placed on the defending 2002 division champions, and whoever defeats them will collect a $100 check from one of the program sponsors. Future bounties will be placed on event winners in their respective categories. If the champion does not attend the event, the bounty will be placed on the runner-up of either the division or the previous race. If neither attends, there will be no payout, and the bounty will not carry over. When the racer who has the bounty on him or her wins the event, the payout will roll over, and $100 will be added for the next event. In the event of a rainout where no winner is crowned, the bounty at the next event will be placed on the points leader coming into that event.
