Nickers‘NNeighs TherapeuticRidingCenter ANNUALREPORT 2015 260MountainTrailsLn Acme,PA15610 724-593-8121 www.kidsonhorses.org 2015AnnualReport FromtheBoardPresident DearFriends, As2015comestoaconclusion,wehave beenreflectingonourgrowthandfuture. WhatstartedasthebrainchildofJohn andDeborahMcCainin2006,originally runbyvolunteerswiththreehorses servingabout20students,hasinashort timeastonishinglydevelopedintoNickers ‘NNeighsTherapeuticRidingCenter. Nowemployingsixstaffandhousing13 horses,Nickers‘NNeighsprovides therapeuticridinglessonstoover150 studentsofvariousagesanddiagnoses annually. Forus,2015becameayearof sustainability,shiftingfocusawayfrom growthinsteadtobuildingafoundationforabrightfuture.Somehighlightedaccomplishments from2015thatwillhelpusstrengthenthatfoundationandourdedicationtoourmission include: • • • • Theelectionofnewexecutiveboardleadership,therecruitmentofnewboard members,andincreaseofboardinvolvement; Theredirectionofourfundraisingeffortstosupportmission-basedfundraiserstohelp spreadthewordaboutourorganizationandmissionthroughoutthecommunity; Significantimprovementstothefacilitytoimproveaccessibility;and Continuedfocusonqualityofprogramming. Thefollowingpagesoftheannualreportservetotellthestoriesoftheincrediblecommunity formedaroundeachparticipantatNickers‘NNeighsincludingthevolunteers,families,staff, individualdonorsandfoundationsthatsupportourprogrammingandmission.Itisby-in-large thegenerosityofourindividualdonorsandthefoundationsthatprovidefundingforprograms, thesuccessofourfundraisingevents,andthethousandsofhoursdevotedbydedicated volunteersthatallowNickers‘NNeighstothriveandgrow.Foryourpast,ongoingandfuture involvementandspiritthatliftsthisorganizationtonewheightseachyear,wearedeeply appreciative! Withgratitude JulieWhitbeck-Lewinski,BoardChair 1 2015AnnualReport VolunteerVision 2015wasaveryactiveyearfor volunteersatNNNTRC.Wesaw93 peoplecomethroughourdoorsto volunteer--ourhighestnumberyet! Volunteersdedicated2,068hoursof theirvaluabletimetoourcause.Many ofourvolunteersarefamilyofpastor currentparticipants;highschoolor collegestudentsdoingprojector internshipwork;peoplewhoworkina similarfieldandwanttolendtheir expertisetotheCenter;retireeslooking tostayactivewhilehelpinginthecommunity;orparentslookingforawaytogivebackthatcan includetheirpreteenchildren. VolunteersatourCentercanbefounddoinganynumberoffunctions,includingfacility maintenanceandrepairs,cleaningstallsandcaringforhorses,assistingourstudentsin therapeuticridinglessons,helpingwithofficetasksorattendingoff-sitespecialevents.Weare alsoalwayshappytohavepeoplewhocanhelpwiththingslikephotography,grantwriting, newsletter,fundraising,marketing,etc. Overthenextcoupleyears,wewillbemovingtowardaprogramwherethevolunteerscantake amoreactiveroleinprogramdevelopment,training,mentoringandrecruitingfuture volunteers.Ourgoalistocreateavolunteercommunityinwhichourvolunteerscontributeto thedevelopmentandfunctioningoftheirprograminordertoincreasetheirsatisfactionand retention.Whenourvolunteerssharetheirstoriesofjoyandfulfillmentfromconnectingwith ourstudentsandhorses,wehopetobringawarenesstoourmissionandgetnewvolunteersto jointheNNNTRCfamilythroughtheirwordofmouth. “Thevolunteersare buildingblockstothe successofthekids.Their timeanddedicationallows eachchildtoride,learn, andgrowsotheycanbe thebesttheycan be.Thankyoutoallthe volunteersandespecially ourvolunteers,Rickand Sophie.”-Anne,motherof student,Max 2 2015AnnualReport "Forme,volunteeringatNickersand Neighshasbeenlifechanging.Ithasallowed metolivemypassionforchildrenand horses.Ihavealsobeenblessedwith lifelongfriendshipswiththestaffaswellas someoftheothervolunteers,studentsand families".-Laura,Volunteer,Parent& Family-SupportStudent "Whatbeganas'somethingforustodo' afterweretired,quicklybecameour 'favoritethingtodo.'Welovelearningfrom thefunstaff,meetingothervolunteers, workinginthebarn,caringforthe wonderfulhorses,andhelpingthestudents duringtheirvisitsandlessons.Volunteering forNNNTRChasgivenusmorethanwe havegiventhem.Wearegratefultobepart ofthisimportantandjoyousorganization."- Jane&Chris,Volunteers OurHerd Ourherdconsistsof15equinesofavarietyof breeds,shapesandsizes.Ofthose,6horses areownedbythecenter.Theother8are privatelyownedandfreelyleasedtousforour program. Thesmallestofourherd,theminiaturehorses, serveourstudentsandareambassadorsinthe community.Notonlyaretheylessintimidating tosomeofouryoungerandperhapsmore hesitantstudents,buttheyalsorepresent Nickers‘NNeighsatcommunityawareness events.In2015,ourminiaturehorseswerethe attractionfortheHorsePattyBingoandCash BasheventatHempfieldCommunityDays. Miniaturehorse,Speckles,visitedthechildren forstoryhouratTheJeannetteLibrary,and alsovisitedtheresidentsatanursinghome. 3 2015AnnualReport SinceNickers‘NNeighsservesadults aswellaschildren,wealsohavesome sturdierandlargerhorses,including twoNorwegianFjords,QuarterHorses andaSpottedSaddleHorse. Theimageofa‘therapy’horseisoften ofanolderhorsethatmaynolonger besoundenoughtohandlesteady ridingandtrainingoraquiethorse, whichisnearingretirement.Thisis notthecase! Atherapeuticridinghorseisanathlete thatmustbesoundintheirmotiontobebeneficialtoourriders.Thesehorsesmustbeableto thriveinanactivetrainingprogramaimedatkeepingtheirbodiesandmindshealthyandfitin ordertoserveourstudents. Eachhorseishandselectedforourtherapeuticridingprogram.SincethehorsesatNickers‘N Neighsarethefoundationofourprogram,theyreceiveindividualizedcareandattention.We offeracomprehensivefeedingprogrambasedontheirageandactivitylevel.Theyreceive regularveterinary,farrier,anddentalcare.Someofourhorsesalsobenefitfrommassage therapyandchiropracticcare.Theirtrainingisvariedtokeepthemmentallysharpand interestedintheirwork.Ourhorsesareturnedoutinsmallgroupsdependingontheirindividual needs.
