Eighty-one years ago, General Secretary (CEO) Leonard Skeggs invited legendary University of Chicago football coach Amos Alonzo Stagg to speak at the Y’s Sunday Forum. The Forum would run from January to March and many nationally known figures would come to Central and give informative and inspirational talks. Coach Stagg is one of only five division I-A coaches with over 300 college victories. He coached for 41 years and lived to be over 100 years old. (1862-1965) The coach would also address the Youngstown Rotary where Leonard Skeggs was very active and the boys at the YMCA Trade School which eventually became YSU. 1928 would also see a young man who was a fixture at Camp Fitch the previous 13 years return to take charge of football activity up at the Lake. Ten years later, Dwight “Dike” Beede would lead the YMCA college team to its very first game. Forty-eight years ago, Don Gardner, sports director at WKBN and President of the Curbstone Coaches, made arrangements for future Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown of the Cleveland Browns to meet and talk to the boys of the Youth Division on Monday afternoon, March 6, at 4:30 p.m. Jim met with the boys for just under an hour and signed autographs in the Auditorium. Seven years after Brown’s visit, Cleveland defensive end Bill Glass would be the principle speaker at the first report for the 1968 membership campaign. Glass had been with the Browns for six years at this point and was also a minister and native Texan. He was a member of the Waco, TX YMCA whose General Executive at the time was James Waring, former Central Physical Director. Jim Brown 1961 ~ Player Dwight “Dike” Beede 1928 ~ College Earl Bruce 1966 ~ College Central would also find future Hall of Fame receiver Paul Warfield, of Bill Glass 1968 ~ Player And finally, 26 years ago at our Centennial Celebration, the “Dean” of College football coaches, Joe Paterno, head football coach of Penn State University was the keynote speaker. 550 people would fill the Community Gym on Monday, February 7, 1983 to listen to the Coach of the National Champion Nittany Lions stress the importance of the YMCA and the part it plays in the lives of our young people. In honor of the coach’s appearance, Central presented 30 youth memberships to students at area schools along with a letter personally signed by Coach Paterno. Along the way future Ohio State coach Earl Bruce would speak at our second annual “Banquet of Champions”. The banquet was held to honor outstanding Y athletes during the current year. Prior to his tenure at Ohio State, Coach Bruce won state championships at Massillon High School. Amos Alonzo Stagg 1928 ~ College Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins fame, working out in the Y.A.C. (now HFD) or playing in many pickup basketball games in the Upper Gym. The Youngstown area is well known for the great high school teams, and players it produces year after year. Combine that with the outstanding YSU teams and we have quite a history. Many players were and are members of the Central YMCA. There are many other gridiron stories to be told, but we’ll save those for future articles. Hope this one scored a touchdown with you! — Al Leonhart, YMCA Historian Paul Warfield 1974 ~ Player “To keep spiritually fit, walk daily with Christ.” Joe Paterno 1983 ~ College Page 3 Fall/Winter Central Branch Hours Beginning October 5 Mon.-Fri. 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Beginning October 10 Sat. 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Beginning November 1 Sun. 12:30 to 5:00 p.m. Y-Arts Week Celebrated at Davis In celebration of National YMCA Arts Week, the Davis branch will be hosting an Afternoon of the Arts, Saturday, October 10th from 1:30-4 p.m. The fare will be live music, dancing and painting demonstrations, kids’ crafts, refreshments and more. Members wishing to display their own two-dimensional art are encouraged to pick up a registration form at the Service Desk. Healthy Members Won, Couch Potatoes Zero! That was the score after the first eightweek round of the Happy-Healthy-Active program designed by Stacie Cross, YMCA summer intern from Slippery Rock University. The program pitted about a half dozen members head to head for points based on the amount of time spent exercising. Congratulations to grand prize winner Vivian Sedlacko. Also participating were Richard Duffett, Christine Hornyak, Tony Quaranto, April Rummel, Pam Schuster, and Sue Yokley. October Fitness Evaluations The Davis Family YMCA will be offering free fitness evaluations for members on October 24 from 1 to 3 p.m. A series of five tests will measure cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, body fat and flexibility. The data will show how you compare with others your gender and age and tell you what you need to work on. Pre-registration is all that’s required at least two weeks prior. Dr. Constantine is a graduate of Boardman High School, the College of Wooster, OSU and the College of Medicine/Residency on Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. E’s Health Center. He is on the Board of Trustees of Butler Institute of American Art, and the Mahoning County Medical Society Board. As a Y member he attended gym & swim classes and Camp Fitch as a child and now is an HFD member. His grandfather Attorney Constantine G. Economus attended Youngstown College and earned his law degree at the YMCA in Youngstown in 1932. Dr. Constantine’s wife Renae and 8-year-old twins Cece & Lilly enjoy exercising and classes at the Davis Family Branch. We are happy to have Dr. Economus on our Board. Fall Parents’ Night Out The second Parents’ Night Out of the fall season is coming up October 24th at the Davis Family YMCA. Treat yourself to a night on the town or just a quiet evening at home knowing that your kids are safe and having a blast at the Y! This month’s theme is “A’ camping we will go”. We don’t think you have to provide a sleeping bag and a tent, but leave it up to Adele Taylor and her preschool staff to make a camping trip out of just about anything! See your latest Program Guide for additional details. The program runs from 4-8:00 p.m. for children three months through nine years of age. Page 6 Family Fall Fest Around the Corner It’s coming! The ever popular Family Fall Fest at the Davis Family YMCA. On October 24 from 12-3:00 p.m., you and your family can enjoy a plethora of activities like pumpkin face painting, people face painting, gym activities, candy in a haystack, bobbing for apples, and “Hot Pumpkin”. (It’s like “Hot Potato” except with a pumpkin, and it’s in the pool so that kind of cools it off a bit!) The Fall Fest is a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Best of all, it’s free for members! We just need you to register so we know how many pumpkins to pick! You can do that easy enough at the Service Desk the next time you’re in, or from the comfort of your laptop online at home! But don’t feel like you can’t come if you forget. We’re sure there will be enough pumpkins and snacks left over to accommodate everyone! Our Lifeguards Are the Best Sometimes lifeguards can be taken for granted. They sit in the guard chair almost unnoticed every hour of the day vigilantly keeping watch over the thousands of members and guests who made a daily pilgrimage to the Lariccia Aquatic Center and outdoor pools this summer. Only in an emergency does their vigilance and training take center stage. More than 70 in-water rescues and assists were all in a proverbial day’s work for the Davis lifeguards, not to mention dozens of scrapes, bumps, bruises and bee stings that needed first aid attention. Thank you for the hard work and dedication you displayed as you kept everyone safe! Also, special thanks to Aquatic Director Chris Hughes for her tireless coordination of the aquatic department. One of the ways that people give to Camp is through our ongoing wish list. We think of things we could use at Camp that you may no longer find useful at home. If you think you have an item that could benefit the thousands of youth that come to Camp each year, call director Brian Rupe at 814.922.3219 ext. 118. A non-certification course for First Aid for infants and children focused on prevention and emergency preparation in the home will take place on October 28 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The cost is $20. Please contact Aquatic Director Chris Hughes for additional details. Wreath Auction Donations Being Accepted ’Tis the season for the Davis Family YMCA’s annual Wreath Auction benefiting the “Partner of Youth” Campaign. Do you have a special hobby or interest that you could share in the form of a wreath? Over the years, the Wreath Auction has raised thousands of dollars toward providing financial assistance to those in our community who are unable to afford a YMCA membership or take part in a YMCA program. Won’t you help? The wreaths will be displayed on the new slat wall in the Food Court at the Davis Branch. Contact Chris Hughes or Adele Taylor for additional details. 2009 Fall “Select” Basketball League 9-10 Boys Competitive 10-12 Boys Competitive 10-12 Girls Competitive This league is designed specifically for those players who are part of a school team, neighborhood team or strategically selected by a coach to participate on their team. Coaches are to select their players, form their teams, collect “Select” league registration forms from their players with payment for the league and turn in the entire coach’s packet to D’Nelle Seiple at the Youngstown YMCA’s downtown Central Branch. Games are played in two 20-minute halves with the clock running until the last two minutes of the game and coaches can sub according to their game plan. There is a league tournament held at the end of the season. These teams should be made up of more advance skilled players and parents should understand that equal time/equal play does not apply in this league. If interested in the league, please email dseiple@youngstownymca.org with your name and address to receive the mandatory coach’s packet. There is a limited amount of space for teams, so it is a first come/first served basis. Many families not only come back for years, but for decades bringing multiple generations. It is a wonderful celebration of families, sharing a common bond, who look forward to a week of friendship, fun and relaxation on the shores of Lake Erie. This year we were blessed with great weather. In what has proved to be a cool summer, family campers were blessed with a hot & dry week. We kicked off the week with a glorious event…the dedication of Trinity Chapel. Days were filled with endless activity all over camp. The warm evenings had a little bit of everything: a concert by Paul Kyle and Family from Belfast, Northern Ireland by way of Minnesota, a night of Improv led by Brad & Lulu Barton of New York City, an outdoor movie night and Skit Night both held at the new Russell Lodge Deck to mention but a few of the evening programs. A few new families joined us this year coming from as far away as Tennessee and Florida and as close as Erie, PA. You, too, can be a part of Family Camp for 2010. This year we added a second week to accommodate more families! We will do the same for 2010. Next year’s dates will be: Family Camp 1 – Aug. 8-14, 2010 Family Camp 2 – Aug. 15-21, 2010 If you have any questions or would like to get your family into Family Camp 2010 please contact us at Camp Fitch – 814.922.3219. Page 10 Christmas at Camp Fitch December 6th, 2009 – 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Start a new tradition on the first Sunday in December. The first annual Christmas at Camp Fitch will happen this year. This special event will include a Christmas program in our new Trinity Chapel and formal dinner in the Dining Hall. Expect to enjoy Trinity Chapel all dressed up in Christmas decorations, luminaries, Christmas carols, a performance by a local choral group, a candle light ceremony and a delicious dinner in the Dining Hall on Lake Erie. Proceeds from this event will go toward the Camp Fitch scholarship fund. Reservations can be made by calling the Camp Fitch office at 814.922.3219. Values of Exercise (Part III) This is the final installment by former Associate Physical Director Larry Miller who also met his wife Carolyn through her late mother Evelyn Beckner who worked the switchboard at Central from 19601973. Evelyn Beckner Other biological values of exercise are an increased number of red blood cells in the bone marrow and an increased hemoglobin count in the blood. The hemoglobin carries oxygen from the lungs and a lack of hemoglobin will cause anemia. Exercise can stabilize the blood pressure by raising or lowering it. It will also stabilize the pulse rate of the heart. Exercise can improve and maintain the general all-around fitness of the individual by increasing strength, endurance, agility and coordination. It retards the onset of fatigue, prevents insomnia and is effective in reducing neuro-muscular tension. You are never too old to start with a little exercise because a little won’t hurt. A person can’t honestly say they don’t have the time for exercise because you can see how you can’t afford not to take time for exercise. Swim Lesson/Instructor Aid Orientations Set The next Swim Lesson Orientation is set for October 14 at 6:30 p.m. and October 17 at 10:30 a.m. at the Davis Branch. The orientation will help to familiarize you and your child with the YMCA Progressive Swim program and evaluate your child for proper placement. Additionally, the next Swim Instructor Aid Orientation is scheduled for October 14 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Find out more about how you can share your love of swimming with children by assisting as a volunteer in the Progressive Swim program. I kind of knew that something was wrong at this level for years. I had my first child at age 41 and six weeks after my C-section I felt good enough to start jogging. So I did. At the end of the third mile I felt something ‘burst’ at the level of my bra line. I remember thinking that I had popped a disc and just brushed it off even though it was painful. I regretted going out on a run so soon after a C-section but the damage was done, I thought. Since that time I have had a burning-stinging pain intermittently of my mid back when carrying something, sitting at my computer or reading for too long. It bothers me when I am doing the dishes too. Now I know that my suspicion was correct. There is not spinal cord or nerve root impingement at this level and it will probably continue to bother me off and on forever. Between my 2nd and 3rd, my 3rd and 4th as well as 4th and 5th vertebrae are bulging discs. These are causing mild compression of the thecal sac at each level. Sounds gruesome but what it means is that I have mild touching of the disc material against the outside layer of the spinal cord. Symptoms of this would include pain and paresthesia (a funny feeling like needles and pins) of my legs. I get pain along the dermatome (the area of my legs that each nerve supplies respectively) roots of lumbar 4 and 5 on the left and once in a while on the right but no significant paresthesia, no incontinence and no persistent burning pain. Degenerative arthritis exists between the 3rd and 4th and the 4th and 5th vertebrae. There are side joints at these levels called facet joints that also are with degenerative arthritis. The MRI further shows that there is bone marrow edema within the adjacent portions of lumbar 4 and 5 vertebral bodies. Bone marrow edema is a generalized response to either trauma or stress of the bone marrow. Bone marrow edema may be the first recognizable MR finding in many conditions, including transient synovitis, trauma, stress, infection, ischemia, tumor and reflex sympathetic dystrophy. My bone marrow edema is likely due to my daily routine as a mother of two rambunctious children, a physical therapist as well as from my running over the years. I realize that my MRI is littered with degenerative spinal findings. The fact is that I am sitting here again, pain free. I have realized what triggers my pain from both good and bad experiences over the last decade or so. I know that if I slouch while on this computer or sit back on my desk chair and prop my feet up to talk to someone that I will suffer from back/leg pain and buzzing for two weeks. I also know that if I carry our sweeper upstairs I get back and leg pain. I have come to know that if I lean forward and pull weeds in our yard for more than a few minutes that I can hardly stand up straight afterwards not to mention that my back is screaming with pain. I know that if I sleep on a soft mattress or end up slouching in a soft chair that I will have back and leg pain. When driving I know to get out at least every hour and a half or else I will suffer the consequences of being in a sitting position for too long. So guess what I do; I avoid those activities that bring me distress, I exercise and I keep on trucking along. …it’s that simple. Ask your physical therapist to assess your activities that are aggravating your bad back and make a list of what to avoid in order remaining pain free. Or call me, I will be happy to figure things out with you. “When you can’t sleep, don’t count sheep. Talk to the Shepherd.” — Jean McConnell Page 11 The YMCA of Youngstown NON-PROFIT ORG.
