As a student who majors in Korean Language, ever expected. During a week-long orientation before classes started, all the exchange I have a huge interest in Korean culture and social customs. students were introduced to all the KU “buddies” who are currently enrolled home students and volunteered to help us with any problems and introduce us to Korean Studying at KU is really interesting and challenging at the same time because I had to culture. During orientation, the buddies showed us around campus and the nearby learn to adapt to a system which is completely different from my home institution in neighborhood (which is very lively and full of small restaurants and bars) and took us on China. During the term time, I am busy preparing for presentations, working in teams a tour of Seoul. We also went out for drinks many evenings, which usually entailed loud and participating in group discussions everyday. I get to study what I am interested in and entertaining Korean drinking games followed by a trip to a nearby norebang (karaoke). and also to make friends from all over the world in my course. Whilst studying with KU students, I was the most deeply impressed and moved to see how focused they were Sean Bennett from UBC, Canada My buddy, Jeong Ho, is one of the funniest people I have ever met and we have become great friends. He was great in helping me get settled (he helped me obtain a bank LuShuang from Jilin University, China account and a cell phone in the first week) and he is always introducing me to new “I have traveled all around the world and I can say without hesitation that Korean people are the friendliest and most welcoming. I can also say that they have the best food! It has made for an amazing trip full of unforgettable memories.” things, such as good restaurants or interesting parts of town. In addition, I have become great friends with many other buddies and we regularly get together for lunches or drinks in the evening. They have done an amazing job at introducing me to Korean culture. For example, one of my friends let me tag along to witness a very interesting orientation ceremony for freshman students. Another friend brought me and some other exchange students to “chant orientation” where we learned, in a stadium full of freshmen students, all the songs and dances that KU students perform in synchronization when they play their rival university in sports games – the school spirit here is completely incomparable on what they wanted to achieve and their eagerness to succeed, and how they respect friendship between friends regardless of nationality. In addition, I like the spectacular buildings on campus of which I call ‘castles’, and the easy access that KU has to various “All of the professors and friends are so kind and take good care of me. With all the heartwarming moments I had in Korea and with KU friends, I feel very much part of KU and I am loving my time in Korea!” places nearby. Most of all, it is the KU atmosphere that makes me feel that I am studying in a multi-cultural environment. I admire the internationalization that KU has achieved. Even though I am in an exotic environment, I still feel like I am in my homeland. All of the professors and friends are so kind and take good care of me. With all the heartwarming moments I had in Korea and with KU friends, I feel very much part of KU and I am loving my time in Korea! to what I have experienced in Canada, and it is really contagious. Traveling to Korea has been a thrilling, unforgettable life experience. Having no My major at the Laurea University of Applied Sciences in Finland is 3D Animation, and knowledge in the native language, I was terrified about the prospect of living in one of the I came to KU to broaden my skills. Not only have the courses here been interesting, largest cities in the world, Seoul. However I was pleasantly surprised by the assistance I but both the teaching staff and my fellow students have gone out of their way to make was provided from both KU and the Korean citizens. me feel welcome. In particular, the friends I have made through the Korea University Buddy Assistant program have been an invaluable and enriching addition to my life as an Michael Lucy from Griffith University, Australia “Korea University Buddy Assistants (KUBA) help foreign students get on their feet, and jump into the Korean lifestyle. They take away a lot of the stress and hardship that is tied with an exchange program, while also providing multiple opportunities for you to meet new friends and socialize.” 12 Living in Seoul has allowed me to absorb a culture which is very much different from exchange student, providing me with everything from assistance with practical matters to my own. Even simple tasks, such as going to a restaurant for dinner, feel completely insight into Korean culture. Most importantly, they have blessed me with their friendship. I foreign. You sit on the floor with your shoes at the door, eating incredibly spicy food with am thoroughly enjoying my studies in KU; even at my busiest, I always find opportunities chopsticks while drinking Soju and screaming ‘One Shot!” Make sure you also roam the to relax and have fun by playing pool or visiting the coffee shops around the campus. streets around the KU Campus. It is full of super cheap food and small niche shops. Another thing that I found fascinating about Korea is the nightlife. Nightlife in Korea is thriving, with districts dedicated to night clubs, and shopping centers that close in the early morning! As nighttime approaches, the streets become filled with people looking for a way to unwind, whether it is with singing at a karaoke room, dancing in a club, or playing Starcraft at a nearby Internet Café. Coming to KU was a great choice, and I plan to come back to Korea as soon as I can! Laura Toivola from Laurea University, Finland “I am determined to return to Korea and find work here as soon as possible. I am indebted to the amazing people I have met through Korea University, who have played such a large role in making Seoul feel like my home away from home.” Coming from a very different cultural environment, life in Korea has offered nothing but pleasant surprises. Cultural events, historical sites, danggu-halls, the nightlife, friendly people, shopping, and last-but-definitely-not-least delicious Korean food have given me a wealth of new experiences. I am so enamored with life in Korea that the prospect of returning home after only one too-short year saddens me. 13 Other Study Programs In addition to the Student Exchange Program and Visiting Student Program, there are two other programs that students can apply to study at KU. They are the International Summer Campus (ISC) which is also organized by the Office of International Affairs and the Korean language program which is offered by the Korean Language & Culture Center (KLCC).
