2013 Annual Report
My moment of inspiration of strength of freedom Annual Report 2012 | 2013 1 QEII Health Sciences Centre QEII Health Sciences Centre Foundation The QEII Health Sciences Centre (QEII) was created in 1996 through the merger of several major facilities, including the former Halifax Infirmary, the Abbie J. Lane Memorial Building, Victoria General Hospital, Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Centre, Cancer Treatment Research Foundation and Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building. The QEII Foundation inspires generosity to advance health care at the QEII Health Sciences Centre. Gift by gift, the QEII Foundation supports a number of remarkable health care advancements that contribute to the life-changing moments experienced by patients and their loved ones every day. By working with a community of people who have a vision of better health, together we strengthen the extraordinary health care at the QEII, improving the health of our fellow Atlantic Canadians. Today, the QEII spans both the new Halifax Infirmary (HI) and Victoria General (VG) sites, encompassing 11 buildings, 700 physicians, more than 7,000 staff and 1,200 volunteers. It has become the heart of the academic health care network for Capital Health and the cornerstone for health in Atlantic Canada. The QEII serves as a local community hospital for immediate and emergency care, as well as a specialized care centre for patients in the Atlantic provinces. The QEII offers services such as heart surgery, cancer treatment, neurosurgery and organ transplantation. In addition to providing the most advanced care available, the QEII is the leading research centre and training facility for tomorrow’s health care professionals – working towards the future of health care. The QEII Health Sciences Centre is made up of 11 buildings located on two sites: Halifax Infirmary (HI) Site 1. Halifax Infirmary 2. Charles V. Keating Emergency and Trauma Centre 3. Abbie J. Lane Memorial 4. Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Victoria General (VG) Site 5. Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Centre 6. Bethune 7. Mackenzie 8. Centre for Clinical Research 9. Dickson 10. Victoria 11. Centennial Each and every one of us has the power to invest in what matters most – our health, the health of our loved ones and the health of our community. Good health is something we’ve all taken for granted. Typically, it’s only when our health or the health of our loved ones is threatened that we begin to slow down and appreciate every second. Working at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, we have the privilege of developing relationships with patients and donors who remind us every day that, when everything else is stripped away, health is what matters most. The stories in this annual report have been shared by people with extraordinary moments in life: moments of illness, recovery and, most importantly, inspiration. You will meet Tim Williston who was diagnosed with a neurological disorder that robbed him of his independence, and Becky Pink de Champlain, a young mother who was blindsided by stage four colon cancer. The Fountain family discuss the pain of losing their loving son to suicide. And you’ll also meet Joy Reyno, who stayed by her husband’s side through a year of regular hospital visits and a stem cell transplant. Each story demonstrates how we are all touched by the fragility and importance of health, at the most unexpected times, and how it empowers us all to appreciate what matters most. This past year has been a true testament to the compassion of the QEII Foundation community. It really does begin with you. Your gifts and generosity resonate throughout the health centre and reach patients daily through the QEII’s advanced technology, comfort and care items, and renowned research and education. You have helped make the QEII a world leader. Thank you to the volunteers who continue to give their time and resources, and to donors like you who continue to give. Bill Bean President & CEO, QEII Foundation Chris Power Patient/Family Parking Emergency Entrance General Entrances Mymoment President & CEO, Capital Health QEII Health Sciences Centre Foundation ANNUAL REPORT 2012/2013 3 2 Mymoment My Gift My Freedom Leaving a gift in your will After Tim Williston’s life was changed, he and his wife Nancy arranged to leave a gift in their wills to help future patients with a neurological disorder. Through their bequests, they will continue to care for the health of their community, long after they are gone. To learn more about how you can make a difference for tomorrow’s patients, contact Charles O’Neil at 902 473 4511 or visit QE2Foundation.ca Before entering the operating room, Tim Williston took a moment to reflect on what he missed over the last two years: hugging his wife, family dinners and reading a good book. Cervical Dystonia had taken these things away from him, replacing them with a constant shaking of his head. After his surgery at the QEII, the 57-year-old experienced an immediate recovery. He could now hold his own fork and read his own book again – he got his freedom and independence back. But more importantly, he could hold the love of his life, Nancy, in his arms once again. If my gift can help, what can be better than that? ” “ I don’t want anyone to have to go through what I went through. QEII Health Sciences Centre Foundation ANNUAL REPORT 2012/2013 My Future It was the every day moments like reading a book and rocking her two-year-old son, Oliver, that got Becky Pink de Champlain through the worst time of her life. At only 30, Becky was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer. Being a mom is what kept her going while half her colon and two thirds of her liver were removed, along with six months of chemotherapy. While it will be years before she knows if she is cancer free, Becky isn’t wasting any time. She enrolled in the Masters of Nursing program at Dalhousie University and volunteers with a group supporting others living with the disease. As for Oliver, he’s looking forward to showing his future baby brother or sister their family’s favourite place. Mymoment 5 4 My Diagnosis Automated Lab System QEII lab technologists like Shauna Thompson are proud they will soon be working with one of the most advanced automated lab systems in North America. Donors to the QEII Foundation supported the upgrade to the automatic system which has many benefits for patients. Reducing manual steps through automation will improve turnaround time, allowing for quicker diagnoses and less time waiting for test results. For patients like Becky, it means spending more time focused on what matters most, time with her growing family. Patient Care Funding When you give to the QEII Foundation, you are helping ensure that patients at the QEII receive the best care possible. Whether it is a simple item that provides comfort on a long night or an automated lab that delivers pinpointed results, your generosity resonates throughout the health centre and reaches patients every day. For patients like Becky, having the right tools saved her life when she was diagnosed. The QEII Foundation understands how vital it is to have the latest technology, equipment and patient care items, and that’s why the Foundation continues to raise funds for the areas and programs of greatest need. 54% In 2012/2013 donors to the QEII Foundation helped fund patient care (programs, equipment, technology and facilities) in areas such as: so lucky to live in Halifax. “ We areWhen I was first diagnosed I thought I would have to go to “ Toronto or New York but I didn’t need to. I can get zz Brain Repair Centre zz CAMP HILL VETERANS MEMORIAL BUILDING zz zz zz zz zz CANCER Care CHRONIC DISEASE DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING HEART HEALTH HEMATOLOGY zz JAMES AND EDNA CLAYDON RADIATION TREATMENT CLINIC zz MEDICAL DAY UNIT zz NEUROSURGERY zz ORTHOPAEDICS zz SKILLS CENTRE FOR HEALTH Sciences zz UROLOGY the highest standard of care, right here at home.” QEII Health Sciences Centre Foundation ANNUAL REPORT 2012/2013 7 6 My Inspiration Mymoment Alex Fountain was a loving son, brother and a talented musician. From the outside looking in, he appeared ready to take on the world. So when Alex took his own life in August of 2009 his parents, Fred and Elizabeth and sister, Katharine were devastated, along with the community who loved him dearly. Since that day, the Fountains have taken every opportunity to make a difference, advocating for others living with mental illness. In memory of Alex, the Fountains made an extraordinary gift to the Stay Connected Mental Health Project – helping other young adults become aware of, and receive access to, the care and support they need. My Goal The stay connected mental Health Project Working with the Fountains and other health care partners, Dr. David Pilon, specialty mental health services program leader in the Capital Health Addictions and Mental Health Program, developed the Stay Connected Mental Health Project. The five-year project goal is to replace barriers with pathways, raise awareness of the current support available and change the health care system’s approach to transitioning young adults and their families from the IWK to Capital Health mental health and addictions care. The project will also build stronger partnerships with local universities to support the mental health and addiction care needs of students. “ We wanted to do something we thought would make a difference. Something significant, something in his memory.” QEII Health Sciences Centre Foundation ANNUAL REPORT 2012/2013 My Strength An active father of two, all Michael Singer wanted to do was keep up with his energetic kids, Molly and Jacob. So when the osteoarthritis in his knees left him struggling to get out of bed, he turned to the QEII’s Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Ross Leighton – who replaced both of his knees, one at a time – saving his mobility. Thanks to Dr. Leighton and the physiotherapy staff, Michael happily stepped back onto the golf course with his young children last summer. He hasn’t missed a swing since. Mymoment 9 8 Back to Me Joint Mobility and Arthroplasty The QEII’s team of orthopaedic surgeons currently help more than 40,000 patients a year, with demand continuing to rise as our population ages. A vital component to delivering the best care possible is having up-to-date research. Thanks to generous donors, an Endowed Chair in Joint Mobility and Arthroplasty Outcomes was funded this year. With the completion of this Chair, the QEII and Dalhousie University will attract an internationally renowned researcher of the highest calibre who will provide leadership and generate momentum in outcomes research. For patients like Michael, it means getting back in the swing of things. Dr. David Amirault Division Chief, Orthopaedic Surgery Research & Education Funding The QEII’s team of orthopaedic surgeons help thousands of patients recover from life-changing circumstances so they can go on to live active lifestyles. Our researchers understand today’s unknowns are tomorrow’s big discoveries. By supporting research, we are helping patients enjoy longer, healthier lives. “ At age 52, having my knees and being able In 2012/2013 donors to the QEII Foundation helped fund research and education initiatives in the following areas: zz MEDICAL ONCOLOGY zz RESPIROLOGY zz MOLECULAR PATHOLOGY zz RHEUMATOLOGY zz NEUROlogy zz UROLOGY zz ARTHROPLASTY zz NEUROSURGERY 46% zz ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY zz PROSTATE CANCER zz INFECTIOUS DISEASE zz RADIATION ONCOLOGY zz BREAST CANCER zz ORTHOPAEDICS zz CYSTIC FIBROSIS zz PANCREATIC CANCER to play with my kids means the world.” QEII Health Sciences Centre Foundation ANNUAL REPORT 2012/2013 MyComfort Accepting a job offer at NSCC was an exciting day for Joy Reyno, until her husband, Mike, shared news of his own. He had been diagnosed with leukemia. For the next 12 months, Joy balanced her new teaching career with spending every other moment by his side. Mymoment 11 10 While at the QEII, it was the comfort of a warm blanket and a cozy chair that helped Joy get through each appointment and long night, supporting her husband’s full recovery. Since then, Joy has taken her experience and incorporated it into her Medical Transcription and Health Information Management programs. Her students not only learn their respective job skill competencies, they also learn about the importance of giving back through service learning. By holding multiple fundraisers throughout their program, they support comfort items for patients, like Mike, receiving a stem cell transplant, and the loved ones, like Joy, by their bedside. My Community COMMUNITY INITiATIVES comfort in knowing that, from our fundraising, “ I take great patients have those personal care items that everyone else takes for granted. Groups such as Joy’s students and Craig’s Cause, and individuals like Derek Caine, are a few of the many community members who continue to step up and give back in support of the health of their community. Patients at the QEII benefit from these community fundraisers that support all aspects of the health centre from patient care to research and innovation. To learn more about these community champions, and others like them, or how to get involved, please visit our website: QE2Foundation.ca. Sometimes the smallest things can make the biggest difference.” QEII Health Sciences Centre Foundation ANNUAL REPORT 2012/2013 13 12 My Friends My Support James & Edna Claydon Radiation Treatment Clinic Wadih Fares and Besim Halef believe we all have a responsibility to ensure our community and loved ones have access to the best health care. Thanks to their leadership gifts, and to other donors who share the vision of greater health, Nova Scotians living with cancer now have shorter wait times and the latest radiation technology at the new James and Edna Claydon Radiation Treatment Clinic. With the completion of the Cancer Never Waits campaign, three new linear accelerators and a High Dose Rate (HDR) prostate brachytherapy program were added to the clinic. This means an additional 60 patients can be treated every day. What started as a persistent cough soon lead to a spot on Ellen DonahueIngraham’s right lung, snowballing to non-small cell lung cancer, six weeks of radiation treatment and five chemotherapy sessions. It also meant she was one of the first to be treated in the new James and Edna Claydon Radiation Treatment Clinic. you’re in the waiting room, “ Whenyou start to develop a sense of Mymoment The last thing Ellen expected during her radiation treatments was to make friends. However, she quickly connected with those in the waiting room who, like her, felt an immediate understanding of each other’s fears and hopes. Keeping spirits high, Ellen would sew tiny colourful birds to give to the QEII staff and patients she befriended in the waiting area. you smile, pat each other on the back and give a squeeze when someone needs it.” camaraderie with the other patients – QEII Health Sciences Centre Foundation ANNUAL REPORT 2012/2013 Thank You circle of care Annual gift of $1000–$4999 The individual and corporate donors listed below gave a gift to the QEII Foundation of $250 or more. You will notice that some of our donors are identified as being part of our Members’ Circle program. This optional program keeps members involved and informed on the impact their gifts are making to health care. You too can be part of this special giving program – please call Doralin Fredericks at 902 473 3307 for more information. On behalf of the patients and their families who arrive at the QEII Health Sciences Centre every day for care, thank you for investing in your health and the health of your community. By donating to the QEII Foundation you are helping ensure that when you or your loved ones need it most, the right care is there. circle of care Annual gift of $1000–$4999 circle of friends Annual gift of $125–$999 circle of giving Perpetual monthly gifts of $10 or more circle of friends Annual gift of $125–$999 David E.
