Singapore, an island city-state is located at the crossroads of the Asia Pacific. It is a welcome blend of
sophistication and multi-racial traditions as old as the cultures themselves. Confined within a land mass of just
639 square kilometers and lying just over one degree North of the equator, Singapore is a dynamic, modern
metropolis where skyscrapers tower high above the world's second busiest port. A closer look reveals a city that
has retained many elements of its fascinating past. Gold-domed mosques where the muezzin still calls the
faithful to prayer.
Incense-filled temples built by migrants in thanks for safe passage across the Southern Sea. Quiet back lanes and
bustling bazaars overflowing with all the treasures of the Orient. Gracious old colonial architecture and peaceful
green parks.
Singapore's strategic location and fine harbor made it ideal for a trading port during the 1890's. The city
attracted enterprising merchants and hard working immigrants from many places. Malays, Javanese, Bugis,
Chinese migrants, Arab traders, Indians, Armenians, Ceylonese and British account for the cultural assimilation
visible to the visitor. The current population comprises 78% Chinese, 14% Malay, 7% Indian and 1% others.

DAY 05 SINGPAORE/JAKARTA

1:15 PM Arrive Jakarta. After completing immigration and customs formalities you will be met at the baggage
claim area by your guide and escorted to a waiting vehicle for your transfer to the Sheraton Bandara Hotel. The

12:50 PM Arrive Pangkalan Bun. Your guide will be
waiting outside the baggage claim area holding a sign
marked ‘Your Name’. You will be assisted with luggage
and escorted to a waiting vehicle (note the
transportation in this part of Indonesia - is extremely
basic) for your transfer to Kumai. The drive takes
approximately 25 minutes.
In Kumai will have an opportunity to shop at a local
stall and pick up some bottled water and snacks for
your Camp Leakey adventure.
Afterwards board a "klotok" (local wooden boat) for
your journey along the Kumai and Sekonyer Rivers. Be
on the lookout for proboscis monkeys, gibbons,
macaques, herons, storks, hornbills, pigeons,
kingfishers, flycatchers, bulbuls, and pitta.
Late this afternoon check in to the Rimba Lodge
where reservations for an Emerald room (air
conditioning and hot water, Triple Occupancy) have
been confirmed for the following 3 nights.
The Rimba Lodge is perched on the edge of the
Sekonyer River and surrounded by forest. Access is
only by boat from the Port of Kumai. The Lodge is
built in a series of adjoining elevated pavilions with
walkways connecting the restaurant,
reception/lounge, and office. A resident troop of
Macaques Monkeys are often seen around the lodge
and Proboscis Monkeys are also often visible across
the river.
Just before sunset set out on the river to view the
Proboscis Monkeys settling in the trees for the night.
You will see primates of several varieties: Macaques,
Silvered Leaf Monkeys and Proboscis Monkeys.
Proboscis Monkeys belong to the group known as
colobnes. They have unusually large stomachs, a
result of digesting the leaves they eat in specialized
chambers where bacteria ferment the animals’ food.
The male Proboscis Monkey has a huge pendulous
nose, which adds to his unusual appearance. Harems
are usually comprised of a dominant male, several
females and their offspring. There are also bachelor
groups, and confrontation with a harem results in
great commotion as members of the bachelor group
attempt to mingle with the harem females.
Please note: Your Camp Leakey portion of your
itinerary is flexible to afford maximum opportunities
for viewing wildlife and taking advantage of any
special sightings, occurrences or conditions. You will
start early each day to be on the river at prime
wildlife viewing times.

Enjoy two full days exploring the region.
Visit Tanjung Harapan. Located in the Tanjung Puting National Park Reserve, Tanjung Harapan was established
in 1936. Tanjung Puting is one of the largest lowland reserves in Kalimantan. Tanjung Harapan is also home to
the Probiscis Monkey Research Station. Here you will find both Proboscis Monkeys (a primate found only on
the island of Borneo) and baby/infant orphaned Orangutans which are being re-introduced into the wild by the
Camp Leakey Station Project. You will have a wonderful opportunity to meet these endearing apes.
Journey upriver to the Camp Leakey Orangutan station. The Camp Leakey Station is in a remote and primitive
setting in the central swamp-rainforest. Here for the past 30 plus years, American Dr. Birute Galdikas and her
staff have labored to create a home for formerly illegal captive orangutans from around the world who are sent
to Camp Leakey for re-introduction into the jungle environment. Dr. Galdikas is conducting long-term research
into the orangutan's social behavior, mother-infant relations, and feeding ecology at Camp Leakey.
At Camp Leaky attend the afternoon feeding. This is when the rehabituated orangutans come in for a once-aday support feeding to assure they are getting enough nutrition while being left to fend for themselves in the
wild. This is a wonderful opportunity to observe the gentle giants at very close range, get some excellent
photographs, and talk to some of the support staff that operates the research station. A visit to Camp Leakey is
an opportunity not to be missed! Sections are a bit swampy though, so the usual cautions about mud and
leeches apply. Here you will have opportunities to hike through a primeval rain forest in search of wild
orangutans.
Late in the afternoon you will see the Proboscis Monkeys returning to the trees located along the riverbanks
where they will spend the night.

DAY 10 YOGYAKARTA

Begin with a visit to the Sultan’s Palace, commonly referred to as the Kraton. The Kraton is the ancestral Palace
of Java's supreme ruler and is considered the finest in existence in Indonesia. Sonobudoyo Museum is dedicated
to Keris. Keris are asymmetrical daggers or swords famous for its distinctive wavy blade, although there are
straight blades as well. Keris are made from metal, rare types of wood, gold or ivory. Considered both a weapon
and spiritual object, Keris are often considered to have an essence or presence—some even considered to have
magical powers.
Also visit a Batik & Silverwork factory.
Pause for lunch at a local restaurant. Cost of lunch payable directly to the
restaurant.
After lunch travel outside the city to the magnificent Borobudur Temple. Built in the
8th century this shrine is the largest artistic expression of the principles of the
Buddhist religion combining art and architecture to produce a true "Wonder of the
World."
Erected 200 years before Notre Dame and Chartres cathedrals, it also predates the
Buddhist temple of Angkor Wat in Cambodia by three centuries. Built with more
than two million cubic feet of stone, it's the world's largest stupa and largest ancient
monument in the Southern Hemisphere.

DAY 11 YOGYAKARTA/DENPASAR (Bali)

Temple and your transfer to the Yogyakarta airport.
Visit Prambanan Temple, a Unesco World Heritage Site. Prambanan Temple is a collection of massive Hindu
temples built by the Mataram Kingdom. Prambanan derives its name from the village where it is located. The
temple sits amongst rice fields and the holy shrine rise 43 meters. The Prambanan Complex, built in the 9th and
10th Centuries, once contained more than 200 temples. The temple was built in three parts representing the
stages of the Hindu Cosmos. The base was the underworld for commoners, the body was the middle world for
those who'd renounced the worldly life, and the summit represented the upper world inhabited by the gods.
The temple complex has eight shrines, of which three are dedicated to the Hindu trinity of Shiva, Vishnu and
Brahma. The main temple also has carvings of the well-known Ramayana epic. In the 10th century the temple
was largely abandoned after the Mataram dynasty moved its court base to East Java. Most of the main temples
collapsed during a major earthquake in the 16th century and the huge complex lie largely forgotten in the jungle.
In 1811 a surveyor working for Thomas Stamford Raffles came upon the ruins of Prambanan by pure chance. It
is somewhat ironic that the very brief British rule of Java led to the re-discovery of both Borobudur and
Prambanan. Restoration of the temple complex began only in 1930 and continues today.

6:35 PM Arrive Denpasar (Bali). After collecting luggage you will be met by your guide outside the baggage
claim area and escorted to a waiting vehicle for your transfer to the Bali Oberoi.
At the Bali Oberoi reservations for (2) Luxury Garden View Lanais have been confirmed for the following 2
nights. The Oberoi is set in 15 acres of tropical gardens on Seminyak Beach. Built in traditional Balinese style,

At 9:00 AM be ready in the lobby of the Bali Oberoi in preparation for your transfer to the Mekar Bhuana
Conservatory.
From 10:00 AM – 2:30 PM meet with a Dance Instructor from the Mekar Bhuana Conservatory. Learn about
Balinese Dance and Balinese Gamelan.
Devoted to the documentation and reconstruction of rare and extinct Balinese music and dance, the Mekar
Bhuana Conservatory helps to educate and raise awareness for these beautiful endangered arts. Based on more
than a decade of research and a close working relationship with Senior Gurus from surrounding villages, the
Mekar Bhuana aims to provide a locale where anyone can learn and appreciate these unique forms of art.
At 2:30 PM drive to the lovely village of Mengwi to see the Former Royal Temple of Taman Ayun.
From Mengwi travel to Alas Kedaton, where monkeys surround the holy temple.
Afterwards visit Tanah Lot, one of Bali's most important sea temples. The temple sanctuary is built atop a huge rock,
which is surrounded by the sea. Built by one of the last priests to come to Bali from Java in the 16th century, its rituals
include the paying of homage to the guardian spirits of the sea. Poisonous sea snakes found at the base of the rocky
island are believed to guard the temple from evil spirits and intruders.
Return to the Bali Oberoi at approximately 6:30 PM.

DAY 13 BALI – Transfer to the Elephant Park

8:00 AM be ready in the lobby of the Bali Oberoi in
preparation for your transfer to the Elephant Park.
Enroute visit Batubulan Village where you will see
the spectacular Barong Dance. Also called the "Kris
Dance", the Barong Dance is a pantomime of a
fantastic dragon-like holy animal, the Barong, pitched
in battle against the witch, Rangda. This is the most
violent of Balinese dances and is often used as an
exorcism. Rangda is Queen of the witches, a ruthless
child-eater and black magician who brings sickness
and death. Some scholars say her origin is Shiva's
wife Durga in her evil aspect. Barong, a hairy, eerie,
mythical lion, sides with human beings against
Rangda to thwart her evil plans. The Barong is
manipulated by two men who take the immense
puppet through comic, yet complex, dance
movements. The puppet has a beard of human hair,
feathers, and bells all over its body.
Afterwards visit the Pasar Seni Sukawati (Sukawati
Art Market) where you will have 2 or so hours to
explore the market. Sukawati market offers a variety
of items, from the aray of beautiful paintings and
ornaments, clothing as well as an assortment of fresh
produce and snacking opportunities.
At approximately 1:30 PM depart for the Elephant
Safari Park Lodge.
Arrive at the Elephant Safari Park Lodge at
approximately 2:30 PM. At the Elephant Safari Park
Lodge reservations for a Taro Suite (Triple
Occupancy) have been confirmed for this evening.
Enjoy an elephant ride and Elephant Show.
This evening you will be picked up by elephant and
transferred to the dining room for a buffet dinner.

DAY 14 Bali - Transfer to Ubud

From 7:00 – 8:00 AM enjoy breakfast in the lodge.
From 8:00 - 9:30AM you will be able to wash the elephants.
Afterwards check out and drive to Keliki Village where you will visit an elementary school and explore the
village.
Drive to Batuan and visit a traditional Balinese Compound at Singapadu Village. Here you will have an
opportunity to visit with a typical Balinese family.
At approximately 2:00 PM arrive at Hanging Gardens Ubud where reservations for a Family Pool Villa (Triple
Occupancy) have been confirmed for the following 3 nights. The Hanging Gardens Ubud is a haven of peace set
among the emerald rice terraces and jungle covered mountains at the heart of Bali. The grand gardens exude the
essence of the tropics with cocoa and coffee trees intermingling with bamboos, ornamental flame trees and
orchids to create a spectacular haven. The hotel offers guests a complimentary shuttle service from the hotel to
Ubud's town center.
Ubud, located amongst rice paddies and steep ravines in the central foothills of southern Bali, has for more than
a century been the island's preeminent center for fine arts, dance and music. From Ubud and the surrounding
villages have come the most famous dancers, the best known painters and the most talented carvers in Bali. An
8th century legend tells of a Javanese priest, Rsi Markendya, who meditated at the confluence of two rivers at
the Ubud locality of Campuan. It is here that he founded the Gunung Lebah temple on the valley floor which
remains the site of a pilgrim destination even today.
At 6:00 PM be ready in the lobby of the Hanging Gardens Ubud in preparation for your transfer to Belerung
Stage Peliatan. From 7:30 – 8:30 PM enjoy a Legong Dance Performance.
A consummate Balinese dance that epitomizes grace and beauty, the Legong Dance emerged from age-old
temple dances meant to appease the gods. A delicate dance typified by highly stylized, deliberate movements,
many of the dancers begin at an early age and retire by the time they are 18.
After the dance performance transfer back to the hotel, arriving around 9:00 PM.

After lunch return to the Hanging Gardens Ubud.

At 6:00 PM depart the hotel and travel to a nearby
village where you will see a Kecak Dance
Performance. This dramatic pre-Hindu Dance is said
to derive from the choral element of the trance dance,
Sangyang Dedari. Also called the "Monkey Dance"
because of the savage ape sounds the performers
make; 100 or more seated men all shake, clap, and
shout as one being. No gamelan accompanies the
Kecak Dance, just the massed voices chattering in
perfect unison. The plot is taken from the Ramayana
epic.
At approximately 9:30 AM be ready in the lobby of
the hotel in preparation for a morning of exploring
downtown Ubud.
Begin with a visit to the Ubud market where there are
shops galore.
Afterwards walk along Monkey Forest Road, where
you will see numerous monkeys. Visit Pura Dalem
Agung Temple and Puri Lukisan Museum. In
downtown Ubud visit Puri Saren Agung and the
Ubud Palace.
Pause for lunch at a local restaurant. Cost of lunch

At 9:00 AM be ready in the lobby of the Hanging
Gardens Ubud in preparation for a full day of
exploring Bali's eastern region. Stop at the villages of
Gianyar and Klungkung where you can visit the
Kertagosa, the ancient courthouse. Note the traditional
kamasan wayang paintings on the ceiling. Each
painting has a story, often depicting the scenes of
punishments and rewards in the afterlife.
Afterwards visit the most beautiful and famous temple
in Bali... Besakih, The Mother Temple of Bali.
Pura Besakih, is a 1000 year old temple structure which
complements the beauty of Bali and its thriving Hindu
culture. Dated from the 14th century, the temple was
built on a site where animist rites, ceremonies and
feasts once took place. Set low on the slopes of Mt.
Agung, long stone steps lead up through seven rising
terraces to three main temples at its top, each offering
homage to the principal Hindu gods of Shiva, Brahma
and Vishnu.
After lunch visit Goa Lawah and Tenganan, the
village of the Aga tribe who have their own culture
and live in a totally different style of architecture, a
walled-in isolationist town (which is totally different
from any other community in Bali). Seldom do the
young people marry outside the village, which has
resulted in zero population growth. Tenganan is the
only place in all of Indonesia where double-ikat cloths
are woven. The cloths are used for ceremonial
purposes: weddings, teeth-filings, covering the dead,
or for a child's first haircut. Only about 30 people still
weave gringsings on small makeshift breastlooms.
At approximately 5:00 PM return to the Hanging
Gardens Ubud.
