Hurricane Packing List for Your Pet
Don’t leave your pet at home! While
most evacuations last only a few days, there are
times that you may not be able to return quickly.
The safest place for your pet is with you. Pets that
are released or left behind often become victims
of starvation, predators, contaminated food or
water, accidents, or exposure to the elements.
Plan ahead and assemble an emergency
evacuation kit now for your pet!
Store in a waterproof container:
1. IDENTIFICATION! A microchip
is the best form of ID. Make sure
your microchip company has up
to date contact information for you
including an emergency contact.
At minimum, your pet should have
a tag with his name, your name,
and your phone number on it. PHOTOS of your
pet that capture identifying features are also a
good idea.
2. Proof of current vaccinations. All pets must
be vaccinated to be allowed in an emergency
shelter. Have copies of current veterinary
history including medical
conditions,
vaccination
information,
prescription
medications with dose and
frequency.
3. A two to four week
supply
of
current
prescriptions labeled with
name of pet, medication
and dosage; include heartworm
and flea/tick medication.
4. A sturdy, comfortable
carrier/crate large enough
to accommodate each pet for
several days. Be sure your pet can stand and
turn around in the carrier. Collapsible wire
crates are best if your pets might be in a nonair conditioned environment for an
extended period. Molded plastic
airline-approved crates make for
easier transport and are best for
animals that don’t travel well in the
car.
5. At least a one week supply of
food and bottled water, including
bowls and a manual can opener if
your animals eat canned food.
6. Cat litter, litter scoop and litter box (or
disposable aluminum baking pan can be used).
7. Extra collars, harnesses,
leashes, and ID tags
8. Cleaning supplies:
newspapers, plastic bags,
disinfectant, hand sanitizer,
paper towels
9. Toys and treats
10. Emergency phone numbers for
veterinarian, poison control, microchip company

All my adult life my goal was to volunteer
with cats but I was busy raising my family
and working full time. In 1998 I retired
early and moved to Florida to take care of my mother.
One day I drove by a building with a sign out front that
caught my eye: “St. Francis Animal Shelter and Thrift
Store”. I put on the brakes and pulled into the parking lot.
I met an energetic woman at the shelter named Barbara
McCarten, who put me to work as a cleaner. Eventually I
became an adoption counselor which led to my meeting
Bertie Erickson, another dedicated shelter volunteer.
After the thrift store moved out Bertie and I reorganized
the shelter into two separate areas: one side of the
building for the adoptable cats and the other side for the
resident cats. What a project that was!
Today I am still an adoption counselor, and now I am also
the coordinator of our foster program and president of
the Board of Directors. My fifteen year commitment has
made a lasting impact in my life and filled a huge hole in
my heart that only serving the homeless cats and kittens
at the shelter could fill.
Volunteers are the backbone of St. Francis, and we
would not exist without them. We always need more
committed volunteers. Make a difference in your life by
making a commitment to St. Francis Animal Rescue and
the cats that call this shelter their home. Whether you
volunteer as a cleaner, a counselor, a foster parent, a
socializer, an event helper, an office helper, a thrift store
worker or a trapper assistant, your help will be a valuable
contribution. Call or stop in at the shelter or thrift store
and fill out a volunteer form. We’d be glad to talk to you
and help you find your niche at the shelter. Fill that special
spot in your heart—you will never regret it.
Sincerely,
Gail Carson

Buddy’s Feral Cat Corner
Dear Cat Lovers:
Buddy and his team of 15 veterinarians and
60 volunteers have been hard at work since
January at our monthly feral cat clinic at Ashton
Animal Clinic in Sarasota. This year we have
successfully spayed and neutered 365 cats. We
have impacted our community and the cats in
an immeasurably positive way. Countless lives
have been saved because we care. We owe a
debt of gratitude to our special volunteer and
generous donor Phyllis Siskel. Phyllis shares her
unconditional love for the feral cat community
through her constant giving.
In January Buddy launched a
new program called “Kids and
Kittens” - We have partnered
with SCTI (under the direction
of Randy Theis) and Venice Cat
Coalition (Theresa Foley) to get
queens and their kittens or orphaned kittens out
of the shelter/rescues in an infant stage and into
the hands of foster kids who are in the veterinary
assistant program as SCTI. The kids are learning
the direct hands on dynamics of caring for the
cats/kittens as well as the medical requirements
to keep them thriving and healthy. The kittens
are benefiting from one on one socialization
and from less exposure to infectious diseases
that are often unavoidable in the shelters. This
program, although still in its infancy, is a winner,
and we are excited to bring you this information.
Our cutting edge pediatric spay/neuter program
is proving to be a huge success. Using a modified
anesthesia protocol, we are spaying/neutering
the kittens from Buddy’s program at the age of
6-8 weeks (approximately 1 pound). All of these
kittens have gone on to early adoptions into
forever loving homes, thus breaking the painful
and never ending cycle of feral cats.
A lot is happening, and we appreciate all your
support!

12th Annual Cat’s Meow Gala
Our 12th Annual Gala held at the Plantation Golf
& Country Club was a great success thanks to
your generous support. Thank
you to everyone who attended,
and a special thank you to all
of the volunteers who helped
put it all together. Your support
generated just under $9000
for the kitties.
The evening began with a
sumptuous catered dinner
and a silent auction. Dozens
of people were thrilled to win door prizes, and Lin
Gruber was the lucky winner of the 50/50 raffle.
The highlight of the evening was
the live auction where a bidding
war erupted over a high-end kayak
that was generously donated by
Pat Hough.

At the end of the night, though,
there were no losers—only
winners who helped support
the lives of 150 cats. Thank you
everyone!
Black (and White) is Beautiful
We’re black cats (well, some of us are black and white, or tuxedo, as we prefer to be called). It has come to our
attention that black cats have a bad reputation. We’d like to state for the record - that misconception is so wrong!
We make fun, loving companions as much as all those exotic siamese, maine coons, persians, and all those
other purebreds out there. Plus, black goes with everything so you don’t have to worry about changing your
home decor! So swing by and pay us a visit. One of us may be the fur-ever companion you’ve been waiting for!

Top 10 Pet Toxins
1. Human Medications
Human
medications
are
once
again at the top of the list of pet
toxins. The most common culprits
include over-the-counter
medications (ibuprofen,
acetaminophen),
antidepressants
and
ADHD medications.
2. Insecticides
Insecticides are commonly used on our pets for
flea control and around our houses to control
crawling and flying bugs. The most serious
poisonings occurred when products not labeled
for use in cats were
applied to them. Always
follow label directions.
3. Rodenticides
Baits used to kill mice
and rats are mostly grain
based. Not only does
this attract rodents, but it attracts dogs and cats.
There are several different types of rodenticides
that can cause seizures, internal bleeding or
kidney failure. Always make sure these items are
placed in areas that pets cannot access.
4. People Food
Xylitol,
grapes,
raisins,
onions and garlic are
commonly ingested by our
pets. Grapes and raisins can
cause kidney failure in dogs, while onions and
garlic can cause anemia if enough is ingested.
Xylitol, a sugar alcohol
used to sweeten sugar
free gums and mints, can
cause low blood sugar
and liver failure in dogs.
5. Veterinary Medications
Many medications made for our pets are flavored
for ease of giving. Unfortunately, that means that
animals may ingest the entire bottle of medication
if they find it tasty. Common chewable medications
include arthritis and incontinence medications.
Contact your veterinarian if your pet
ingests more than his proper dose of
medication.
6. Chocolate
Chocolate contains methylxanthines, which
act as stimulants to our pets. The darker the
chocolate, the more methylxanthines it contains.
Methylxanthines can cause
agitation, vomiting, diarrhea,
high heart rate, muscle tremors,
seizures and death.
7. Household Toxins
Cleaning supplies, such as bleach, acids, alkalis
and other detergents, can cause corrosive
injury to the mouth and stomach.
Other household items such as
batteries and liquid potpourri can
cause similar problems. Always
keep these toxins behind securely
locked doors.
8. Plants
Both house plants and outdoor plants can be
ingested by our pets. Lilies can cause lifethreatening kidney failure in cats,
while sago palms can cause liver
failure in dogs and cats. Keep house
plants and bouquets away from your
pets.
9. Herbicides
Many herbicides have a salty taste, and our pets
will commonly ingest them. Always follow label
directions and keep pets off treated areas until
they are dry.
10. Outdoor Toxins
Antifreeze, fertilizers and ice melts are all
substances that animals can find outdoors. Keep
these items in securely locked sheds or on high
shelves where pets cannot get to them.
If you have any reason to suspect your pet
has ingested something toxic, please contact
your veterinarian or the Animal Poison Control
Center’s 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435.
A Resident Cat’s Story
Dear Reader:
My name is Jockamoe, and I am a resident cat
at St. Francis who is up for in-house adoption. I
am a big seven year old tuxedo boy. Many of my
fellow residents have been adopted, and I would
like parents of my own. Of course, I can’t come
home with you, because I am not user-friendly
when it comes to humans. But I am pleasant and
don’t bite, just run, when humans come near me.
I can tell you stories about cat life in a shelter.
You will get two letters and a holiday card with
my picture for just $100. This donation will go
towards my care, and there are many of us that
would like to be adopted.
Now, I will give you an example of what really
takes place in our shelter after the humans leave
for the night:
The rainy season has begun.
Our wonderful porch gets
really wet when it rains hard.
At the first drop, we all head
inside through our cat doors
in the daytime, but if the
humans hear a weather report that storms are
coming, they escort us (chase is a better word)
inside before they leave for the night. Cats get
testy and whiny when the usual 40-50 cats that
stay outside all night are forced to stay indoors.
This is what happened the last time it rained.
It got noisy, and let me tell you, cats can hear
far better than humans and dogs. To put it
scientifically, and you can believe that my cat’s
brain came up with this, or NOT, humans can hear
sound up to 20,000 megahertz (measurement of
sound), dogs can hear up to 40,000 and we cats
can pick up an astonishing 100,000 megahertz.
We can even hear the ultrasonic sounds that are
known to precede natural occurrences such as
earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and electrical
storms. Our ears have “pinnae” or ear cones and
we can turn our ears in all directions, like radar.
Our pinna has more than 20 muscles working to
allow our ears to turn and pick up sound coming
from all sides, including from behind.
Jockamoe
Our hearing was on alert the night of the last
storm. There were many rounds of lightning and
thunder, and some of the cats started howling.
Red Baron has an amazing yell, and he didn’t like
the thunder. Instead of hiding like a normal cat, his
high-pitched caterwauling pierced our sensitive
ears. There was nothing to do but SHUT HIM UP,
and we could have done it by force. Some of us
guys were ready to have a go at him. Instead,
some of the ladies said they would handle it.
Marla, Rosetta and Princess went up to him and
started whispering and purring in his ears. We
watched. Hummm, we said, maybe that would
work for us as Red Baron settled down with these
beautiful lady cats snuggling up to him.
So a trio of us guys started our own chorus of
howls. It didn’t work! Cordelia, the annoying calico
that has short patience with men, quickly got her
feminist felines to attack us pathetic howlers. It was
ten against three. We shut up fast and retreated to
the front room. Or course, if some of our bros had
joined in, we could have taken them. The storm
stopped, we all got sleepy, and the night ended
peacefully. And that’s life at the shelter.
Generosity Shines in 36-Hour Fundraiser
In March, St. Francis was
one of over 287 local nonprofits to participate in The

A Special Thank You!
St. Francis wishes to extend a special thank you to the following veterinarians
for the services and medical care they provide our cats at little or no charge:
•
•
•
•
•
Dr. Dean Ebert, South Trail Animal Hospital
Drs. Gary Berkowitz and Steve Iulo, Veterinary Associates of Jacaranda
Drs. Molly Caldwell and Nicole Kushmaul, Venice Pines Veterinary Clinic
Dr. Heidi Ward, Gulfcoast Veterinary Oncology/Internal Medicine
Dr. M.A. Salisbury, Animal Eye Care, Inc.
Thank you to Dr. Laurie Walmsley at Ashton Animal Clinic for the donation of our new cat condos. The
kitties are extremely grateful for a safe and secure quiet place for refuge.
Dr. Chetica Maus, DVM, of Ark Animal Hospital once again donated unused specialty food to assist with
the care of some of our special needs kitties. Thank you for your generosity.
Girl Scouts Deliver More Than Just Yummy Cookies!
Girl Scout Troup 865 of Venice chose St. Francis Animal Rescue
as their service project this year, and they sold over 4,000 boxes
of cookies this spring to raise money to help the cats of St. Francis.
Imagine our excitement when they pulled up with over 20 large bags
of cat food and a bag of cat toys in their truck! They even did all the
heavy lifting and brought the bags into the shelter for us. On behalf
of all of the cats at St. Francis, thank you Girl Scout Troup 865; we
are very grateful for your hard work and generosity!
Venetian Golf and River Club and Angella Cisco-Ferreira graciously invited St. Francis to be the beneficiaries
of their local “Boutique on Wheels” fashion show. Participants donated numerous bags of food to help
stock our community food bank.
Message From Our Shelter Manager
The kittens are coming! The kittens are coming! It
is that familiar time of year--Kitten Season. Each
and every day we are receiving calls from local
residents who have found kittens
born in their back yard, inside a
shed or under their porch. Some
need extra attention to overcome
their fears, and others just need
a loving place to thrive until they
are old enough to be spayed and
neutered. Some come complete
with a mommy to feed them, and
others are eating on their own.
Currently, our kitten room appears
sparse, but that will soon change
as the kittens in foster care grow
and become ready for adoption.
Our foster homes are full, so if
you can spare a little time and want to enjoy the
absolutely cutest time in kittens’ lives, please
consider signing up as a foster home. St. Francis
will provide all of the equipment, litter and food.
All you need to provide is a little space, love and
attention to give more kittens a chance at a loving
forever home. This is also a great opportunity for
your teenager to earn their community service
hours for their scholarship opportunities.
Don’t have the space for kittens
or maybe somebody has an
allergy to cats? We are looking
for a special person to assist with
coordinating our foster homes
and kitten health care. This can
be done mostly from your home.
We will provide you with all
the support to learn the proper
procedures. If you are interested,
please contact the shelter at 941492-6200 or stop in and complete
a volunteer application. We look
forward to working with you!
Sincerely,
Jan Chapman
