Stéphane Larance, Crooked grind, Paris / filmed by Thomas Paulin
Hi Julien, can you present yourself?
My name is Julien Castel, I’m 29 years old, I live in
Barcelona for 5 years now but I come from France, around
Paris, 95 baby!!! I skate since 1996 and seriously film for
almost 3 years, mainly for Puzzle video magazine. (check
my page : www.myspace.com/bcnvideography)
How did you discover skateboarding?
I guess I saw by fate a free A5 magazine in a surfshop and
what I saw was amazing!! I had no idea you could do crazy
tricks with a skateboard… When I was younger, I just loved
to ride downhills and stuff but that was it … So I bought
my first complete board after that, one month later, I met
the skate crew of my city, including Jon Monié, which is
kind of a famous Paris’s skater now, Stéphane Borgne aka
the Bear, Ed, etc … And since that time, I never stopped
skating, even if now, I don’t skate as much as I would like
to.
When did you come to filming?
I remember the first cam I had between my hand was my
father’s huge hi8 … Later I bought my first own Sony cam,
a digital 8 with wide angle please! So I started doing some
short montages starring my homies until making a full
length video. It was a really sketchy one but was all fun!!!
In fact, I think that when you do what you love to, when
you’re happy to wake up the morning, even if you don’t
earn that much… That’s the main thing you can get in
your life. At least you have to try it to not have any regrets
later…
Influences, references?
I’m a Transworld video’s fan since ever … Spike Jonze
also rips with Girl films … Ty Evans, Greg Hunt, all this
guys… But I don’t forget we also have the Frenchfred in
Europe… and my top 10’s video would be (not in order) :
Girl “mouse”, Alien “photosynthesis”, Lordz “they don’t give
a fuck about us”, Habitat “mosaic”, Girl “yeah right”, Cliché
“freedom fries”, Blueprint “lost & found”, Static 2, Listen
“viajeros locos” & Lakai “fully flared”.
When did you arrived in Barcelona, and why?
Barcelona ... well, I’ve been lucky to travel a bit after my
business school and I fell in love with the city like a lot of
frenchie before me… Julien Deniau, Antony Lopez, etc
… So we started spending every summer over here and I
don’t know … I was feeling really fine here … there was
a huge difference with Paris’s lifestyle … Plus I had not to
much things holding me in France and for filming it’s like a
dream … we have sun the all year and around 300 spots
in the city … and I still discover some …
You have your own life there, got work, girlfriend I
guess, what can you tell about your life.
Hehe I’m even a Spanish resident, I got my own flat, a
morning contract of employment for safety and the filming
the rest of my free time… And yeah … I also met a nice
girl …
What a typical day in the life of Julien Castel?
A normal day… I wake up before 7h, go work until 14h,
eat something, call my friends to organize the session, go
far away from the center and film as long as motivation
and good light are here. At home I check the footy, then I
can work on it a bit or go chillin’ around, watch movies...
What do you like most in filming? And the worse?
As Jason Dill said in the Feedback video I guess,
skateboarding for me is a kind of art. Every person can
skate the same spot in so many differents ways with is
own creativity… It’s just amazing!! And share that with the
public, it’s really gratifying.
Then, the simple enjoyment to go around with a nice crew,
have fun together, film some stuff, see your skater happy
with it… Manage the part and make his career go ahead,
it’s just happiness… You meet really nice people, from
everywhere on earth… And you travel a bit… Lately we’ve
been in Milano, it was so good!!!
However, it is very hard to live on the filming only…
Skateboarding’s world is not more beautiful than an
another one… Then… what I don’t like … hum … basic
things like everybody, police, Barcelona’s new laws,
streets haters and the fuckin’ bag’s thieves here…
What are your most advanced work so far?
Mmmmh I’m usually not happy with my parts… but
Alessandro Magnani’s one from may/june 2008 issue
is not so bad for 4 months filming. Then I would say my
Filmed By from july/august 2008 issue…
That’s the kind of street skating I like, there’s stylish riders
and it’s not so badly filmed ;)
Which rider do you prefer shooting with and why?
Hannnn ugly question Thomas, lol, let’s say that when you
spend few months to film a focus with a skater, obviously
friendship appears … So everyone became a real homie
for me … Specially Shadi Charbel, Alessandro Magnani
and lately Juliano Guimaraes, I got bestman at his wedding
so congratulations Andrea & Juli!!! And if I really have to
answer to this one, I would say Alessandro because it’s a
crazy character and we always have so much fun together!
Some says that for filming skate you have to be
cameraman, manager, nanny... Is it truth for you?
Well it’s not wrong… I usually try to convince the sponsors
to pay their plane ticket, then I have to find them a
place to stay, make sure shoes and boards won’t miss…
or even find new sponsors sometimes… that kind of
stuff… Then organize the sessions with 2 or 3 skaters,
find photographers… Motivate and advise them about
whatever cool trick to do on whatever spot…
Barcelona is changing with respect to the skate,
police is more and more harassing... Is it becoming
harder to shoot there?
Yeah I can’t deny, sometimes you get kicked out from lost
spots, you don’t even understand why … I mean, I could
try to understand the city hall’s point of view about the
center : Macba & Universidad where it’s full of tourists and
kids… Even if lately, a study has been done on Macba’s
neighborhood and oh surprise, skateboarders are the best
customers there… Nobody really complained, except 2 or
3 haters.
Everyone comes to skate and shoot in Barcelona.
Today many locals skaters live it badly. Don’t you
ever wanna be someplace else ou do you stll enjoy
here?
Being only a resident here, I can’t really speak about that...
but I agree with some spanish dudes, you really have to
respect what’s surround you, the spots, the locals skaters
and don’t be a jerk because you’re on holidays … And for
sure, learn from the past … ‘cause I just heard that the city
hall ‘s gonna rip the Macba …
What are your future projects?
Well… film the LA crew : Adrian Mc Elhaney, Shadi
Charbel & Lenny Vargas are coming next month! Finish
Juliano Guimaraes & Neverton Socado’s parts, two
brazilian killers ... Go to Rome on tour … Then I guess
every filmer would like to direct, film & edit his own video
… And why not later, evolve to an official team manager/
filmer’s job … It’s something I really would like to do!
thanks?
My all family, specially my mom, sweety, all my homies
specially the Bear & Julien Deniau. For sure all the skaters
that I’ve been lucky to film, Puzzle crew, SOP Posse, LA
crew, Sexy team, Filip Zuan for the pics & everyone I
forgot. Peace.

Hi Ben, How was the tour in Sicily? The tour was great, we had 6 sunny and very hot days. It was
our first time there so everybody was really exciting before
the trip.
How do local people react with skateboarders?
I think we just been kicked out 2 times during the trip so people don’t really care but I don’t think they see skateboarders
that many often. During the week we probably only seen 5 to
10 skaters at the spots.
You have been to tons of spot in a week, was it and
exhausting trip?
We had pretty long days, leaving at 10 in the morning and coming back between 22H/23H. I didn’t have to put that much
pressure, I was even more into trying to make them chill a bit
if they wanted to be able to skate the whole week. So yes
it was a bit exhausting but we have been skating hard for 5
days and the last days everybody was a bit wrecked so we
went to visit the Etna and also the bay of Taormina where we
had a boat ride, that was a pretty unique day, walking on the
lava of the Etna in the morning and doing a boat ride in the
Taormina bay in the afternoon.
Sicily is definitly a dreamed holiday destination,
wasn’t it too hard to go skate everyday instead of
going to the beach?
Everybody was motivated to shoot and film, a skate tour where you have to gather photos and footage for few different
articles is definitly not pure holidays. We work hard to promote the team and the brand to the maximum but we are a
tight friendly team so we always have mad fun.
Severin van Ow - Fakie 360 flip switch manual
Marco was our guide over there, is he from Sicily? Marco was helped by locals to drive us around. No he’s living
in Riccione near Rimini. Many thanks to the locals out there,
some spots were really in the middle of nowhere so you definitly need a guy to skate that many spots.
Marco is used to go on tour in europe with the team,
he was proud that the team was visited his country,
no?
We went few times in Italy already, and Marco was always
showing us around, but this time as I had no clue at all about
where the spots were, he took his role very seriously and
was helping me a lot for the management fo the tour. Gracie
marco!
When we see his skills, we can be surprised that he
hasn’t yet had a full part in a european video? How
do you explain that?
Marco si filming a lot in Italy for italian video productions,
most fo the filmers in italy are working on their own video
project so it’s hard to get his footage filmed in Italy outside
the country but we will work on a full part with him, he deserves it for sure. Marco si just going off these days.
Some spots seemed to be very gnarly. Did the skaters really wanted to skate these spots or were they
just the spots you went to?
We went to many kind of spots but some were a bit hammer
times, Marco was really down for that big stuff so I don’t really
know if we went to bigger and harder spots this time. We just
try to skate every kind of different spots possible.
We have discovered new guys on this tour and Julien
Merour is one for example. Let us know more about
him, he seems to be able to skate everything?
We did put Julien on the Globe french team last year, he had
no real sponsors at the time. He just fuckin rocks it, he’s on
fire, we have a bangin paper ad with him coming later this
year. I’m really proud to have him on the team and I wanted
to send him to a tour in Europe. He turned 18 during the tour
so be sure that you will keep hearing a lot from him the next
years.
Matthieu Hilaire - Backside flip
Jan Kliewer was also there, he seems to not force his
talent, what do you think?
Jan abilities and style on a skateboard is just so fuckin nice.
Jan wants to do new stuff for him, original stuff, not everything he can do. Sometimes he could do crazy good lines
but he will tell me that it’s just boring or too easy. Jan needs
maybe more time than the others but I love his style, tricks
and personality. I did put him on Cliché back in the days and
I put him on Globe also. I’m a big fan, you see Jan skate and
you just feel like go skating immediatly. Jan could have got
more footage but he was closed to do few others tricks and
lines, that’s also tour life, sometimes you are very closed to do
your tricks but you won’t be able to come back to try again...
gatthering tricks in few days is definitly something harder
than filming a part in one year.
Severin seemed to have appreciated the spots, was
he already really motivated before the tour?
The destination of the tour changed only few weeks before
the tour and so the crew changed a bit too. I called Severin
like 10 days before the tour so yes he was very very enthusiastic to come. Severin is so motivated to skate, he has a
pure love to it.
Some people are saying that there are too many Globe tours in Puzzle, what’s you point of view on that?
Everybody can have a part in Puzzle as soon as the quality is
good, good tricks with good filming. Many companies/teams
are working on their own projects and they don’t send footage to Puzzle. Every brands should try to film tours, parts for
Puzzle. That helps the euro scene a lot.
We are doing tours, gathering footage and we want kids to
see it so we work hard and Puzzle is the ideal place to promote it. And the Globe Euro teams is big enough to be able
to have new different faces in the tours.

My name is Manuel Robles Sánchez, i live at Almeria and I

Marcos Chami, Daniel Lebron, Alain Gtx and Javier Sarmiento.

I skate on a “plaza” at almeria “presidentes plaza” and lately I Really good wheater there and good times skating.
And I just came back from an Alai camps in the north. That was
have been skating alone.
really nice to skate and teach the kids how to skate. Take a
look of what we are doing at: www.alaicamps.com is so good.
How is the skate scene on Almeria?
There is not so many people skating here. You can named
them on hand’s fingers... There is no place where you can meet Which sponsors did you get? How is it going with
them?
your friend and go skate on the street. You need to call first.
I skate for Alai skateboards, Dvs shoes and Ezequiel clothing.
Did you travel a lot lately? Where have you been? Who I’m very happy with them, they take care of me. I always
have stuff to skate, i have no complains. Especially with Alai

I´m working often at my father´s
flip frontside 5-0 360 flip out
restaurant on the kitchen.
Before i was working as a worker. Once we
have to clean the shit of the undergroung tunnels,
so disgussting! This year I have plans to work less and

me more than never.
D
Do you usually go out at night?
Sometimes, but not so much. I prefer stay calm at my house
watching movies.
W
What kind of music you listen to?
I can hear all the kinds of music but lately i only listen to
Dallas green, black lungs and alexisonfire basically.
H
How does it come to get a part in the puzzle video?
I have some footage that i was gonna put on our local video
from Almeria. Things filmed by my friends. Things that i don´t
want to use for Alaikit (next Alai dvd). When you (Edu) watch
it, you said that it was a mistake, that everybody has to see
the footy because it was awesome. Then you decided to
send it to Puzzle and they like it. So in less that 10 days you
got the part edited and the video was out. I was tripping with
the thing. I´m very happy that it comes out well and I´m so
thankfull to you and the people at Puzzle for the chance.
A
Are you working on some other media project?
I´m doing an interview for Dogway magazine (spanish
magazine) and Spotmag (spanish magazine) too. I´m filming
for next Alai dvd “Alaikit” that will come along on October
with Erosion Magazine (spanish magazine). After that I will
be filming for a part on the dogway video.
D
Do you have some plans for the future?
I would like to work on what i like and have a good house a
car and a good living level to enjoy as much with my family
and girlfriend. try to be as happy as I can and will never miss
something me and my family.
W
Where you want to go with your skate: skating and
travelling?
As far as I can go! Skate as many years as possible and not
hurt me so bad I hope. I would like to travel around europe
and know any Asiatic town.
W
What happened to your heart men?
I got on the surgery twice for my heart. I got some disorder
on my heart so they have to put cables on my hips to get to
my heart. So digusting, so painfull.I don’t know what to think
about it. Sometimes it’s scketchy because I have some little
disorders.
H
Tell any of those almeria jokes to laugh all around:
One man comes to the dentist and he says: “doctor, i have
yellow theet, what do you think is best for me?
“a brown tie” doctor says hehe…
I
Is it true that you are a “ singer” and want to make a
band?
I play the guitar. Lately more serious that ever. I been playing
for so long. I love to play the guitar it makes me feel so good. I
have some tracks but just for myself, not serious. I would like
to have a band but I think it´s so dificult.
S
So that all I guess... a last word?
I want to thank to all the people that push and help me out.
The ones they love me. Specially to my family and girlfriend.
Enjoy the live as most as you can. Peace and love!
