Part A ‘CARING FOR PETS’ DEVELOPING EMPATHY IN THE EARLY YEARS JAN HOMDEN CONSILIUM EDUCATION The Importance of Dramatic Play in the Early Years Personal, Social & Emotional DevelopmentChildren learn; • to co-operate, take turns and initiate role-play • to develop confidence, self-esteem, self-control in re-enacting real life situations • to learn how to work independently and access the resources they need • to learn how to work as part of a group e.g. taking on different roles in a group such as a vet, veterinary assistant, receptionist, pet owner • to express individuality and own personality through imaginative play • to use language of social interaction • to learn to have respect for others’ ideas and accommodate these in role play • to help to tidy up at the end of the session • to show initiative when developing ideas in the role play area e.g. deciding to make signs/posters for the clinic • to reflect on feelings as part of role play e.g. Veterinary Clinic • to use role play to act out their own happiness, concerns, nervousness etc., With reference to: Learning through Play in the Early Years Click on the image to follow the link 1|Page Caring for Pets: Entry Point to the topic A visit to your local Veterinary Clinic If it is possible for the children to visit a local Pet Shop/Veterinary Clinic or for a local vet to visit your classroom (perhaps bringing an animal or two to visit as well) this is a great starting point and one that will get the children excited about Caring for Pets. Their Vet’s practice encouraged children to learn about the job of a vet and how to look after their pets including check-ups and injections! click on the images above to follow the link Dalmatian Vet Kit, 15-Piece by Battat Accessories to add to your clinic – click on the image to follow the link 6|Page Opportunities to write: Writing for a purpose –Thank you letters/cards to the people at the pet shop or the veterinary clinic) On the writing table - provide ‘special’ writing paper (click on the above to download these free resources) Discuss with the children what they would need in their Pet Shop or Veterinary Clinic, for example; signs, posters, labels, price lists, Lost Pet notices, etc. (Click on the Lost Pet notice to download this free resource) Make ‘Record Books’ for the children to write in when role playing. Design a record book for the Veterinary Clinic/ Pet Shop so the children can note down for e.g. the date, the name of the animal, injury, vet’s signature, or, the name of the animal, the name of the person who bought the animal, and their telephone number (so the Pet Shop can call to check if the animal has settled well into their new home!)
