atching the Church of Scotland’s
General Assembly at play has always
been a somewhat amusing if solitary

pastime.
In past times, the embarrassment caused by
Commissioners being dragged by police from
Edinburgh’s public lavatories became so great that
those which catered to cottagers were
conveniently “closed for repairs” for Assembly
Week. Now, of course, the Pink Triangle openly
benefits from the Kirk’s annual talking shop – as do
online services which facilitate hook-ups like Grindr,
Fitlads and Gaydar.
Back on The Mound, the annual stab-in-theback-fest continues much as before despite the
new open plan stripped pine ecclesiastical furniture
and the abolition of the traditional Playpen.
This year, the Assembly once again couldn’t
decide just how nice or nasty they should be about
LGBT ministers and the flocks who wish to provide
them grazing space.
Given a choice of Deliverances that would have
taken a definite viewpoint on the matter, the
retiring Moderator’s Imaginary Friend prompted
him to successfully promote a Cunning Measure
that will put off a decision for yet a few more years
– by which time the Kirk will have lost more
members and have become an even greater
irrelevance to the Scot in the street.
For Kirk Members on either side of the debate,
it must be a scunner to see such a lack of clarity –
and to find the prospect of seeing through a glass
less dimly scampering further into the distance
each year. From the rest of us, I discern a great
thumping sense of boredom.

If the Achiltibuie Thimble Collecting Society was
having a similar debate about opening its
committee to LGBT people, those of us in the
Queer Liberation business would make a few
supportive waves in the vague direction of the West
Highlands. But many would really be thinking: why
can’t they go and join the LGBT-friendly Ullapool
and District Thimble Collectors or take up basket
weaving instead? Such thoughts would be
unworthy – equality should be our goal in all
aspects of life no matter how seemingly trivial.
But we do have to prioritise our campaigns. And
there are considerably greater evils in the world
affecting LGBT people than the internal discipline
of a decaying church and its diminishing
membership.
Queerbashing is still an everyday occurrence in
our land. In other countries, LGBT voices are
silenced with the support of government and
judiciary (frequently egged on by faith
communities who have spent too much time
listening to their own particular Imaginary Friends).
In too many countries it is our lives that are ended.
Which rather puts into perspective the Slight
Stushie on The Mound!

Pride’s Vanity
I
nternationally ignored superstar Vanity von
Glow is easily the most famous woman to
emerge from Eastern European micro-state
Vulgaria. Having fled her homeland due to a
Sapphic uprising some years ago, Vanity lived
and performed for six years in Glasgow and
around Scotland. Now based in London, Vanity
writes to ScotsGay with her latest updates.
Rare is it that any diva of my standing finds the
time to put pen to paper for a nationwide LGBT
publication. I am simply too busy with my Easyjetsetting lifestyle to physically write anything myself.
Either my fingers are either too occupied at the
piano to type at a computer, or are being put to
even better use within my internal cavities.
Nonetheless fortune has it that a passing peasant
has been procured to put pen to paper on my
behalf and scribe this article for your literary
delectation. And what better way to filter my
complex inner musings than through an innocent
peasant-boy fresh from the Soho young offenders
institute. Don’t let anyone tell you that Vanity von
Glow isn’t a philanthropist - I’ve been helping
young ne’er-do-wells stick their pen in my inkpot
for some time now.
It has been over a year since legal imperatives
forced me to relocate to Britain’s capital, and while
my performances at Mecca Bingo halls across
Scotland have continued, it has been some time
since the words ‘Vanity von Glow is performing’
have been uttered by homosexuals north of the
border. Well after months of trips to Scotland
performing for TOWIE-obsessed, bingo-winged
gambling enthusiasts, I can now announce that the
words ‘Vanity von Glow is performing’ can ring loud
and clear from the mouths of Scotland’s gays once
more for this June 15th I look forward to returning
to Edinburgh to host proceedings at Pride Scotia
alongside curmudgeonly comic Scott Agnew!
‘Excited’ is not the word for the peculiar
sensation coursing through my veins and nor, some
of you may be interested to know, is
‘formaldahyde’. Rather the news that I shall be
reunited with Glow Worms in Scotland has me
overjoyed! I am elated, exuberant, and above all
expensive!
With my journey to Pride by bedazzled
broomstick scheduled for mid-June, I thought I
would get warmed up and in the Scottish mood by
introducing ScotsGay readers to a few Caledonian
cabaret performers causing a stir down here in
London town. Obviously any self-respecting Scot
vacationing in London makes sure they have tickets
to all the hottest events at the O2, Royal Albert
Hall, and my own weekly shows at the Green

Carnation in Soho but from now on Scotland’s
LGBT party-goers may add a few extra events to
their tourist wish-list. Scottish strumpets Mary Mac
and Silver Summers both perform weekly cabaret
shows in London and are causing something of a
stir as rising starlets on the gay circuit. Being the
subject of constant press interviews and scandal
myself, it was a change of pace when I became
interviewer and the girls, interviewees when we
hung out recently. I cornered the ladies in a dodgy
Vauxhall back alley and got to questioning them
about their experience as Scottish entertainers in
London!
Mary Mac is a 23 year old cabaret artist originally
from the Southside of Glasgow near ‘the big Asda’
which she tells me is a large supermarket store
frequented by the underclasses. In Vulgaria, where
I hail from originally, we didn’t have supermarkets.
I was instead brought food by the lovely serving
people who I can only imagine grew it themselves
in the pantry. It was like Downton Abbey but
without the annoying Crawley daughters. As I chat
to Mary she tells me a little more about her
background in entertainment - now one of London
cabaret’s rising stars, she had her eye on
performance long before moving to the capital. ‘I’m
a proper stage school baby,’ she explains ‘At the
age of seven I joined GAMTA and trained for ten
years in all aspects of theatre and all that jazz!’
Watching a Mary Mac performance is a real
delight - with a firm footing in theatre she is an alllive vocal powerhouse most at ease with the camp
classics and musical theatre showstoppers. Her
bright, brilliant Broadway voice earned her a place
in all-male girl-group the Supreme Fabulettes who
were a hit across England’s drag scene last year,
enjoying sell-out shows at the Leicester Square
Theatre, and performances abroad in Cyprus and
more recently Gran Canaria. Having parted ways
with the group Mary tells me how much she is
enjoying gigging solo: ‘Currently I am the resident
Queen of The Windsor Castle near Heathrow
performing and hosting there every week and also
every Sunday night at one of the oldest and
campest bars in Soho, Molly Moggs.’ Quite the seal
of approval as Molly Moggs is perhaps the most
beloved of Soho’s gay venues and her warm charm
suits the venue perfectly. I too had the pleasure of
performing there earlier this year, albeit in
significantly less clothing than Mary, and with a
police escort.
Mary also teams up with long-time partner in
crime Bette Rinse (a London drag institution and
cabaret cadaver). Their regular performances of
double act ‘Rinse Out Your Haggis’ is a hit around

the city. With a special Scottish theme in that show,
and in Mary’s overall character, I ask Ms. Mac how
she gets on performing in Scotland, and how it
compares with her residencies in London. ‘I have
only recently brought Mary back to Scotland,’ she
tells me, ‘the one thing, (apart from being able to
speak at normal speed) which I’ve noticed about
Scottish crowds is that they are always up for a
party and don’t need to be asked to join in - they
are in whether you asked or not!’
It seems to me that Mary Mac is the epitome of
an enthusiastic Scottish lass. She agrees , telling
me ‘Scotland is Mary Mac. If she’s not wrapped up
in tartan it’s because it’s all in the wash from
overuse! I adore being Scottish!’ And as long as she
keeps going at her current pace, I’m sure the poor
misguided London audience will continue to adore
her for it too!
Like Mary Mac, Silver Summers is also a trained
vocalist. Originally a student of Glasgow’s RSAMD,
Silver was snatched up by a record label in 2001 and
relocated to London and later LA to pursue a career
in professional music. Ultimately Silver got her first
real taste of showbiz when her label dropped her something I relate to having been rudely ousted
from my seat on Vulgaria’s X Factor panel by the
terminally boring one from Destiny’s Child
(Beyonce).
28 year old Silver, like Mary, is a relatively new
addition to the London cabaret circuit, despite
having clocked up several years as a resident in the
city. If Mary Mac caters to the camp Brighton
showbar crowd, and I to the stylish Soho glitterati,
Silver’s is an act which fluidly dances between the
two. As one of the infamous Trannyshack girls at
the world-famous Madame Jojos, and a regular
performer at the UK’s premier transgender
nightclub ‘WayOut,’ SIlver also enjoys status as
one of the trans scene’s favourite up and comers.
It’s no wonder with a coquettish stage-presence
and approachable persona, Silver is something of
a ‘new-gen’ act, exhibiting few of the trademark
angular drag queen qualities associated with some
of the bitchier acts. Taking over from where Mary
Mac left off Silver has recently been cast as one of
the new generation of Supreme Fabulettes in an all
new show directed by none other than Kylie

Minogue tour director William Baker. Not
forgetting her own girl-group side-project the
Buffalo Girls, and her weekly residency at Trafalgar
Square’s award-winning gay cabaret bar ‘Halfway
II Heaven,’ Silver is one of the busiest bodies on the
circuit these days. Yet it was not always so. ‘I did a
show called Dusty O’s Tranny Academy’ Silver
explains ‘it started me off on the right path and got
people aware of my Silver stage character and then
the bookings just came in.’
Silver is an undeniably confident lass, but I can’t
help but wonder how she sustains her energy levels
through her busy schedule. Naturally I search her
bag for drugs whenever her back is turned on one
of our frequent nights out, but it seems Silver’s
energy comes purely from her enthusiasm and
having fun on the job. Where I turn up to shows
with little more than a bottle of gin, a piano and
songs about my sexual proclivities, Silver comes
with her ‘bell-boy dancers’ and duet partners. ‘It’s
hard work as there are so many amazing drag

performers all over London. Finding your niche is
tough and I am still working on it, but I did Summer
Rites last year and that was a blast! This year I will
be doing Pride with my Trannyshack sisters and I
have just signed up to be in a theatre production at
the Leicester Square Theatre so it could be worse
dear!’
Whilst popular South of the Border, Silver
remains something of a stranger to Scotland’s gay
scene, something she hopes to change in the
coming year ‘I have never performed back home
and I so want to!’ I try to explain to Silver that the
Scottish people have better things to do than
watch her mince about a stage in a short skirt. I tell
her that Scottish audiences are sophisticated and
discerning and have no time for gimmicky Girls
Aloud medleys or Saturdays covers...

... but the songstress is adamant she wants to take
to the stage in her home country. ‘Make me an
offer Scotland’ she begs pathetically, hugging my
leg. I kick her off for fear of catching something
unpleasant and probe her about her expectations
as a performer in London, and what she hopes to
achieve by clinging to her ridiculous chosen career.
‘I just want to learn from all the fab drag queens
around me and just keep on working in London and
all over until I am getting onto the stage in my
Zimmer frame! It will be CAMP!’
While Silver, Mary and myself represent Scotland
as far as London cabaret goes, with varying
degrees of enthusiasm, there is one well-muscled
masculine upstart making a name for himself on
the club scene too! Hailing from Aberdeen but with
ten years living in Glasgow under his belt, nightclub
host Andrew Moore left Scotland after he had
‘done it all, got a degree, had boyfriends and
wanted something new.’ Now Andrew, once a
reedy nothing-special has transformed himself into
a hard-partying Adonis with a killer body and
celebrity phonebook. Taking on the coveted role of
a paid party-goer, Andrew is performing his duties
as a socialite almost as well as I once did in my
native Vulgaria. Fingers crossed there is no Sapphic
uprising in London to force Andrew out on his ear,
as his ascent in London nightlife society has landed
him hosting gigs in cool hangouts such as DISH at
East Bloc, internationally renowned Room Service,
Blocheads, Society and ‘Dupés Den Presents…’
When asked what he hopes to gain from this
mercurial industry, and his time in London as a
whole 28 yea rold Andrew speaks excitedly and
with the optimism of a much younger person.
‘London has been great to me over the last year
and there is definitely much more opportunity
down here than in Scotland. Things have happened
for me that I didn’t even plan and I’m excited to see
what another year will bring.’ With his nightclub
credentials firmly intact, I ask Andrew if he would
consider getting behind the DJ decks and being
involved in nights from the more creative angle, as
I once did with Scotland’s C U Next Tuesday. ‘I
would like to try my hand at being a DJ and even
putting on one of my own nights.’ Well then it’s
settled! Andrew will run a night, and I’ll give out
sexual favours in the toilets for alcohol.
That is if I find time in my own busy schedule! It’s
no easy task being a tabloid darling, and my own
performance demands take their toll! Having
burned to a crisp performing live in the hot sun of
Gran Canaria for Gaypride Maspalomas, I can look
forward to slightly cooler international
engagements later in the year. I will be performing
in Amsterdam, Gothenburg, and Stockholm as part
of my international schedule, as well as shows
across London and England. By peculiar
happenstance I have found something of a
following in chilly Scandinavia, perhaps due to my
European connections in Vulgaria. Obviously the
Swedish Glöw Wörms have immaculate taste, and
recent pop culture analysts have predicted my
further rise to worldwide acclaim could surpass that
of Abba.
But what better way to kick off the summer than
to spend a day in my beloved Scotland! Nowhere
else in the world are audiences quite as verbal,
enthused, ready to party, or as likely to buy you a
drink! I returned to Glasgow two weeks ago to
perform at a private party in Bearsden and am
ashamed to admit my orifices are still recovering
from the endless cocktails the welcoming Scots
poured into each and every one of them. Make sure
you have a wonderful Pride in Edinburgh whatever
you do on the day – I’ll be fighting off the romantic
advances of Scott Agnew on the main stage from
around 2pm. Until then!

n 15th of June it’s our annual Pride Scotia
celebration so this month’s column is a
Pride Special. All the bars and clubs on
the scene are throwing pride parties and many
other exciting plans are afoot. The official route has
been announced and for all the details pick up the
Pride Guide! Whatever you do on Sat 15th, enjoy
yourselves and Happy Pride!
Starting at the New Town Bar, Stephen and the
boys are throwing a whole weekend of Pride events
starting on Fri 14th with the Bear Ball! - the only
Bear Event in Town for Pride! Join BearScots as
they celebrate with a Pre-Pride Party from 9pm!
Current Mr BearScots Jason Green will be providing
the entertainment (who knew the boy could sing?)
- Cupcakes, Midnight Disco - 9pm-2am - The one
and only Bear Pride Event to be at! Then Pride Day
itself Saturday 15th sees some of the NTB Boys,
and the DIVA Live Girls out on the March! They will
be giving out some very special prizes to a select
few people! The bar is open from Noon, DIVA Live
will be on stage from 6pm - Ruby Reynolds is up
from Newcastle to provide some camp fun! Scott
Agnew will be doing his usual hosting
responsibilities on the stage... and Eurovision, 80’s
lady Nicki French will be performing live - plus
expect a few extra surprises along the way! The
festivities at NTB finish on Sun 16th with Pride in
yer Pants! Always a post Pride favourite, the
Basement Bar will be holding its usual Pants Party
for the Pride Goers! All Men welcome from 4pm in
the Basement Bar! £5 entry (includes cloakroom,
entry, and your first drink free) The NTB is going all
out this year for Pride so join them for some fun.
Over at the Street Bar, Wendy and the team
have announced the bill of entertainment for Pride
Scotia. 6pm: “Ruthie is STEPS!” - A tribute to Steps
and Pride Scotia (This will be Ruthie’s 3rd year on
the trot packing out downstairs in The Street). 7pm:
“Prize Surprize” a taster for charity. 8pm: DJ Trendy
Wendy and friends. 9pm: DJ Dowzer. The Street
also has a host of events throughout the week with
Mon, Tue and Wed having Wall Street Crash drink
promos, Wed is now “Orange Wednesdays” with 2
for 1 on all food. Also on Wed is “Prize Surprize” this
replaces the more traditional pub quiz with a
Gameshow format hosted by Ryan Matthewson - 8
for 8.30pm - I hear its all been going down a storm.
Thu nights are “Quality Street” with DJs Honkey
Tonk and Lizzie Rascal playing sweet treats an every
flavour in the box! Fri nights have just been
rebranded as “The Wendy House” so... Resident DJ
Trendy Wendy and a different Guest DJ in ‘The
Guest Room’ every week and warm up from with
Reuben Lowenthall. They will be going around the

house in musical styles: Loft classics, garage
grooves, basement beats, a little bit of lounge, the
quality Kitsch-en, even the garden SWING. The
Popcorn machine will be action too! Whilst in the
Street check the real cool photo booth! Finally, on
Sat they have four different sets of Dj’s rotating
weekly 1. “Wired for Sound” with DJs Steven
Wanless and Allan Dunbar, 2. “Disco-box” with DJ
Stuart Kane, 3. “Street Knowledge” with DJ Dowzer,
4. “Saturday Night Shakedown” with DJ Kaupuss.
PLANET goes Pride crazy this year!! Your
Number one will open earlier than usual (time TBC
– keep an eye on FB Planetbar Edinburgh), to give
you a chance to have a drink and a bite of brekky
to keep your strength up for the march!! From
Noon they will have your favourite scene DJs on
rotation, including Boytoy, Fredstar, Guinness and
DJ Michelle. Keeping the party going all day and all
night till 3am is what they’re are all about! So get
your shorts on, wave that flag, and be proud in
PLANET! Miss Cilla Slack will also be hosting prePride Fri on 14th June, with her crazy shenanigans
to get you in the party mood for the weekend. PostPride Sunday will be the ultimate recovery time,
come to Planet and they nurse your hangover as
the glorious Miss Titty Galore hosts their new Sun
karaoke from 4-9pm.
On a weekly basis, the PLANET Quiz is going
from strength to strength, with a massive £100
jackpot up for grabs every Thu, so get down there
for a fun night. PLANET is also looking for
performers from this year’s Edinburgh Fringe
Festival that they can showcase , so whether it’s
music, comedy, dancing, or something a little
difference, get in touch with John as they would
love you to perform on their stage.
Finally, John, Jude and all the staff at PLANET
would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who
attended their third birthday party on Fri 17th May.
Everyone had a fabulous time, and raised over
£700 for Pride Scotia. Read more about PLANET,

The same applies to Habana who have also been
throwing fundraisers for Pride and promise an
amazing day on the 15th and you never know the
barbeque might just be fired up again.

One place that won’t be getting involved with
Pride is the Blue Moon Café – it has closed and
been sold on for use as a Thai Restaurant.
Don’t forget CC Blooms will also be open for the
big day itself and well into the night. For those
looking to get involved in the community on Pride
Day and beyond check out Gay Men’s Health and
the LGBT Centre for Health and Wellbeing at
www.lgbthealth.org.uk and www.gmh.org.uk for
info on their Pride Day activities and beyond.
Lastly but not least for those aged 25 and under
LGBT Youth Scotland will be getting involved on
Pride Day with its Youth Zone.
Speaking of the day itself, the Pride March will
assemble from 11.30am outside the Scottish
Parliament and will move off up the Royal Mile at
Noon. The march then pauses for half an hour or
so outside the City Chambers where there will be
speeches by invited guests. The Order of Perpetual
Indulgence will also be holding a Black Veiling of
one of their number as well as co-ordinating the
usual minute of silence and minute of noise in
remembrance of those who are no longer with us.
After that, the March will proceed along George IV
Bridge to Bristo Square where there will be an
outdoor stage with top entertainment. Pride
organisers have also managed to secure Teviot
Row House where, in addition to licenced bars and
full catering facilities, there will be the following:

Well there we have it, it’s shaping up to be a
fantastic Pride with everyone getting involved. I do
hope you will join us: Pride is vitally important to
the LGBT community - it continues to ensure our
visibility and demonstrates that we can continue to
march even though there those in the world that
can’t. By joining together for one day in celebration
we can demonstrate that we will continue to
challenge phobia in all its forms. We won’t be
judged because of who we love. Love is for
everyone and for one beautiful and hopefully sunny
day we can stand together with our friends or those
we love and say we count too.
Let the rainbow shine! Whatever you choose to
do in the coming month, Have fun and stay safe!

resident Drag DJ and Compere, also
known as DJ Johnboy, also known as
The Boss. We caught up with Cilla just after
PLANET’s third birthday bash.

How did you get started performing?
It was originally only meant to be a laugh and a one
off bit of fun. About twelve years ago when I
worked in Habana and DJ’d quite a few nights as DJ
Johnboy, we had a drag entertainer who came
monthly called Stephanie Sparkles (she is still a
good friend of mine to this day). She had a sex
change and decided to give up entertaining and
suggested that she would dress me up for a
fundraiser we had arranged for World AIDS Day. I
reluctantly did it for a laugh and as I was used to
hosting already I enjoyed it and was able to do and
say more as Cilla and be more outrageous than
normal. It was a successful night and I continued to
do fundraisers and the odd thing as Cilla to put an
edge on whatever we were doing to be a little bit
different. I had enjoyed Miss Chris D’bray in the old
Flying Handbag in Blackpool and found her style
and Humour hilarious and ideal for me to model
Cilla on. I also saw the drag DJ’s Stella and Folly in
the Mardi Gras so I started to drag DJ Blackpool
style. In my opinion Cilla was not really anything
special in Habana - I mostly worked as DJ Johnboy
there if I was DJing and I suppose with the
encouragement from the Ladyboys of Bangkok
helping me and showing me how to do my makeup
I ended up doing it but if I’m honest I got caught up
in the whole thing and felt I had to do it rather than
had a passion for it. I eventually got a new full time
job away from the scene and when I was not DJing
anymore I really missed it. In the end, friends that
owned CC Blooms at the time wanted me to get
Level 1 going as a party bar with Cilla on as opposed
to John and I reluctantly accepted the job. After a
few gigs, it became a very busy night upstairs and
when I saw how busy it got I started to enjoy being
Cilla and from then on John as a DJ became in the
shadow of Cilla
Who inspires you?
I was inspired by the Ladyboys of Bangkok as I had
developed a very close friendship with all the cast
members. I used to meet them in the afternoons
and at night after the show we would go
sightseeing, shopping, eating and partying and still
do to this day. I look up to them on the stage as the
true professionals that they are. They completely
astonished me with their amazing talent, as you all
know on many occasions they can perform a song

on stage and are even better than the star they are
impersonating. What completely blew me away
was when I got to know them individually and
realising they were normal, in some cases quiet,
shy individuals and that they had a true passion for
their chosen art. I could see that every time they
would put on their make up a true star was being
born and transforming in front of my very eyes.
That shy person turning into a confident and
fantastic performer. The best example was a very
quiet timid person called Fareeda Shinnaraksakul
better known as Kylie in the show in 2003 with Can’t
Get You Out My Head. The moment she stepped
onto the stage she blossomed, she turned into a
very raunchy, seductive performer she completely
blew you away and seduced you as you watched in
amazement. Miss Lilly is one of the best performers
I have ever seen in my life. She returned here last
year again, having been one of the originals from
around 15 years ago and she is exactly like Fareeda
in her natural personality but to say she owns the
stage when she is on is an understatement, She did
Cher, Shania Twain, and a major number a few
years back This is My Life and brought a tear to
everyone’s eye as she put too much emotion into
the song you really did believe she was singing it
live. As a Drag Queen though, Jojo and Olly (and in
years gone by Eddie and June) have been the only
comedy performers to have been in the show so I
have watched and learned a lot from them and if I
am doing a show I notice that I slip into a mixture
of all 4 of them - but mostly Jojo as we have been
close friends since he started to visit the UK around
2003 in the show. He spent a lot of time with me in
the early days coaching me with makeup skills and
when I visit Thailand he takes me to the
dressmakers and make up shops that they all use.
As Jojo and Olly are two of the best and very
famous Comedy Drag performers in Bangkok I
could not have followed two of the greatest people
to grace the stage in the UK if not the world.
How did you get involved with PLANET?
The funny thing is, we all joked about how I worked
in all the other gay bars and clubs but never Planet.
Before I got involved in the management side of
things the previous manager had expressed
interest for Cilla to go and start a Karaoke there on
a Thursday but we never finalised or chatted further
about it. When I started there I got a sneaky look at
something I was not meant to see: .it was
anonymous feedback form that they had given the
staff and to my delight quite a few of them had said
on the form when they were asked what ideas or
nights they would like to see at Planet they had put

get Cilla in to dj or host. I did not want to make Cilla
a feature in Planet right away as there was so many
other things to do but about six months into my
being there, I started to do the odd thing and now
every Friday Cilla is on and I’m pleased to say it’s a
very busy night with lots of fun and laughs along
the way.
Who’s PLANET’s hottest bar-person?
Well I have to say Personality is the most attractive
or hottest thing about a person but at Planet I am
blessed with all of the staff and friends there having
both qualities. I do not want to offend anyone but
I would say the front runners are Ross the model
who is very seductive and flirtatious to the
customers, We’ve got the new recruit Frankie who
loves to seduce with his erotic, flamboyant dancing
and cheeky smile and charm! Then there are
Jordan, Cameron and new boy Anis and they say it’s
always the quiet ones that surprise you!!
Have you ever ‘gone home’ with an audience
member?
Well Cilla is not a sexually motivated person as it
does nothing for me. Many people reading this will
laugh and disagree as part of Cilla’s charm and act
is the art of seduction and luring you into a false
sense of security then pouncing on you and
bringing you into her aura. Cilla lost her virginity 2
years ago after a night working in GHQ, there was
a beautiful Caribbean guy who was in a show at the
festival and was in GHQ with a friend of mine. He
was a tad worse for wear and thought Cilla was a
female (or so claimed to get away with leaving with
her after the club shut) I stayed dressed in case he
really didn’t know and when we got back to mine
there was an explosion of lust (LMFAO)...In the
morning I was shocked when I realised what I had
done, I got up to go for a drink of water and saw
tights, earrings, glove , tits, wig....you name it all
over the place and then it soon became clear who
he actually was. We went for round two after I took
my make up off and then chatted. We realised that
we had very; very mutual friends and it remained
top secret. He later in the month ran away with a
girl he met at the Edinburgh Festival and left the
show he was in. Let’s put it this way: most of the
cast in the show that he had his own section / act in
wanted him. He was straight, never showed any
interest in any of them so no one ever suspected he
was curious or would swing and come on! Let’s
face it, any one of TLBOBK are far more desirable
than Cilla, I was lucky to be in the right place at the
right time and he was on the wrong side of a bottle
of vodka. It was a one off and I suppose it was more
the devilment that made me pursue it as really is
not a thing I would repeat as rule.
How did you get involved with Pride Scotia?
I love to help and give something back to the scene
that I have now been a part of for 20 years. I believe
that the people that work so hard (and you’ve got
to remember that they do it for free) need us in the
venues to pull together and help raise funds and
awareness to make the event a success for our
community as a whole. When Pride Scotia first
started, I drove as Cilla a mini bus to Glasgow to
bucket shake and in every venue I have worked in I
have encouraged and instigated the fundraisers to
help raise funds to support the hard work of John
and his team.
Which famous person would be your ideal date?
My ideal date would have to be Jesse Metcalfe or
I’ve recently really been admiring Duncan from
Blue - my god he is hot!!

Tel us about PLANET’s third Birthday bash.
Hasn’t PLANET been around for longer?
The 3rd Birthday celebration is us celebrating the
rebirth of one of Edinburgh’s greatest bars. I have
been a fan of the venue since it turned gay around
20 years ago, and I feel privileged to have been a
part of making it great again. I wanted to celebrate
the people who have been part of the team and
contributed to the success of the bar changed from
Planet Out to Planet Bar. This name change
symbolises to me the bar changing to a Gay
Community Bar, with the sole purpose of the bar to
be there for its Community. I invited and managed
to get in touch with former team members many
of whom came in and celebrated with us which
really made my night!!! We wanted to fund raise for
the community in some way and knowing Pride
was going to find it hard this year I re-arranged an
LGBT Youth fundraiser and re-scheduled that until
June. We had a Vegas theme with Elvis who went
down a storm, a Roulette table and all the staff and
many customers all dressed up in formal wear or in
drag. It was amazing a great atmosphere nice and
busy and more importantly we raised £704 in one
night for such a great cause.
What’s the future for PLANET?
Well Planet will continue to evolve and move with
the times and keep up to date with the needs of our
community. We will keep investing in the venue to
ensure it doesn’t grow tired and continues to be an
exciting place to visit. People are looking for an
enjoyable experience every time so we aim to make
sure we excel always. We have big plans ahead and
as we keep saying...... IT’S CUMMIN!!!
What’s the future for Cilla?
I always plan to get my voice re-trained, get
dancing lessons and put a show together but being
realistic I just never get the time. Cilla is kind of on
the back burner for now apart from when she
makes an appearance every Fri.

Aberdeen for Gay and Bisexual Men in
the Grampian area called ‘Prime Time’.
This will be an informal and friendly
social group for gay and bisexual men
aged 40 and over.... and give you a
chance to meet in a relaxed and safe
space - and NOT in a pub!! You can
share ideas, concerns or views that you
may have about issues affecting older gay and
bisexual men and will also give you an opportunity
to meet new people and join in any future planning

As reported in the Caithness Courier, Highland
Councillor Alex MacLeod spoke out on International
Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) saying:
“Teachers must be encouraged to report absolutely
every instance of homophobic activity, however
small it may seem. Only then can councillors make
really effective policy to support LGBT young
people. More needs to be done to tackle
homophobia and I look forward to working with the
council towards a more tolerant Highland Region.”

Michelle McManus
T
en years after taking the Pop Idol crown,
I talk to Michelle McManus about her
music, gay sing-a-longs and why her
mum thought she might be a lesbian!
Catching up with Michelle just a few days after
her birthday, she tells me it was a rather quiet
celebration being mid-week and mid-30’s! But a
story about a previous birthday party soon has her
opening up that closet door a little - booking a
burlesque dancer to perform for her and some
mates might have sent the wrong message to her
unsuspecting mother, who asked her if this was a
way of Michelle coming out to them! She said, “I
thought maybe I should calm things down a bit this
year after that, but if I’m still single in a couple of
years I might just give it a try!”.
Rewinding just to the turn of the new
millennium and there was no Sky+, no Twitter, no
smartphones and a digital music service called
iTunes had just launched (it’ll never work!). A new
TV phenomenon had begun in 2002 with a rather
posh boy (Will Young) taking the crown in a brand
new musical talent show “Pop Idol” - it was a
ratings hit and Britain was hungry for more.
Viewers were glued to TV sets in their millions for
series 2 and, harnessing the new power of phone
voting, they quickly eliminated contestants like
Andy Scott-Lee, Sam Nixon and Mark Rhodes
crowning a new Queen of Pop in December 2003,
Glasgow lass Michelle McManus.
She’d been no stranger to controversy
throughout the show, with unflattering headlines
across the tabloids about her weight and where she
would ‘fit in’ with the music industry. “I was aware
of being a bigger lady in my teens and never
thought I’d appear on TV or have fame in any
significant way”, she explains, “but I went along to
the auditions with my granny with a packed lunch
in a shopping trolley and then suddenly was
through to the live shows”. Stories in the press
didn’t deter over 11 million people tuning in for the
final though and Michelle took 58% of the public
vote. The winner’s single “All This Time” soon hit
the Number 1 spot and Michelle was whisked into
the world of London celebrity life.
But then, just a few months after topping the
charts and having a £1million recording contract,
Michelle found herself dumped from her label and
alone in the big city. “It was a really scary time in
my life, a 23 year old girl in London on her own”,
she tells me. “From winning this huge show and
then this great high of a Number 1 single and
platinum-selling album to suddenly having no-one
around me. It was bizarre”. It was also the end for
Pop Idol as a show in the UK, but it was a format

copied globally and ultimately spawned the X
Factor we know today. But with typical Scottish grit
and determination, the Shawlands girl dusted
herself down and just kept on singing, this time
back home in the place that loved her most and
hasn’t looked back since.
“If I could go back and do it all again I still
would”, she said. “It absolutely topped my dreams
of having a music career. I loved performing to a
huge audience and had to keep singing and doing
what I loved.” Those audiences demanded more of
her and she soon had TV and Theatre jobs all under
her belt becoming one of Scotland’s best known
faces. Just last year Michelle was invited to perform
for the Pope on his visit to Scotland as well as Her
Majesty during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations
and has been seen (and heard) at Glasgow Green
and George Square for special city events.
The reaction from a Scottish audience is what
seems to keep her going though, “I love the instant
honesty of a Scottish crowd. They’ll either cheer
you on and back you or they’ll be quick enough to
say if you’re rubbish! Luckily I always have a
fantastic crowd and feel so honoured and proud
that the country invested in me all those years ago
so I owe them a great performance every time. I
would never mime, it’s not me.” Asked about
Scotland’s support for our other talent show
successes, she says “It’s the same with the other
contestants like Susan Boyle, the McDonald
Brothers, Edward Reid, Jai McDowall - they’re all
great singers.” Michelle says playing a gay venue
means her voice gets a bit of a rest too - “I can’t
believe people still want to hear All This Time after
ten years, but it’s amazing when you have people
joining in and singing the entire song back to you.
A gay crowd is always so lovely and overwhelming
for me, even an impromptu song at the Merchant
Pride with my pal May Miller makes me well up a
bit with people chanting for the song.”
A decade on and it’s time for a step into the
unknown - embarking on her first ever self-made
production called “Michelle McManus at the
Musicals”. The show, part of the 2013 Edinburgh
Fringe, will showcase her love for some big
showtunes (and give the audience a chance to sing
along!). “I’ve never felt confident enough to have

my own show or tour, so this is a big step for me but
I’m so excited. I hope there’s an audience out there
for it - I’m in a really good place just now so let’s see
how it goes.” The show is on familiar territory for
Michelle, taking place at the New Town Bar tucked
away on Dublin Street in Edinburgh’s classy new
town where she’s played some nights over the
years. “The guys at New Town have always been
so so loyal to me, there’s just something about that
place, the audience, the guys who run it - I just love
the place. There’s something really special about
performing there so I felt it was the right place to
launch my own show. Plus I get to release my inner
Mama Morton - I cannot wait!”
After singing for the Pope, The Queen and
thousands of us punters through the years she’s got
one more big performance in her sights. “I would
absolutely love to get that call for the
Commonwealth Games”, she tells me. “I’m really
looking forward to 2014 and all those fit male
volleyball players coming to town, but it would be
a massive honour to perform in some way during
the Games.” Perhaps the organisers can take the
hint when we deliver their copies of ScotsGay this
month! If not, I hear SuBo is touring so maybe a
spot supporting her? Now that would be a concert
worth seeing for all the showtune fans.

appy Summer Campers! Despite the snow
in the north, Glasgow has had its four days
of sun allowance for the year so I think it’s
safe to say we’ve had our Summer! It’s been quite
the eventful month in the West, lots of celebrities
gracing the scene, which is always welcomed. I
popped around the scene this month, more than
usual with a bit of extra free time - I also chummed
new boy to ScotsGay, Stuart, to his interview with
Michelle McManus (see page 16). What a laugh!
For all you 90’s dance music people, The
Waterloo was the place to be if you remembered
TTF. Lead vocalist Mary Kiani has been touring with
her newest solo album and graced the wee pub
next to Central Station with her presence before
flying back to Australia where she lives. I like the
Waterloo, it’s got a nice atmosphere and it’s tucked
away from the scene which makes it that little bit
special! They had a great atmosphere for Mary and
I’m sure there are many more blasts from the past
who will grace us with their presence in this pub!
Back at home (Speakeasy for all you that don’t
know) I had the pleasure of hosting a Eurovision
Party to cheer on oor Bonnie. I tell a lie, I was
cheering for Cascada but I think that was just the
poof in me. Finland had one of the most political
numbers ever aired on Euro-Music show,
promoting gay marriage with that noticeable
lesbian kiss that was banned from airing in
Turkey. There’s new nights afoot in yon Speakeasy,
on the John Street, with Nancy Clench teaming up
with towering DJ Shazza to give you your pre-Polo
Lollipop Karaoke night which returns after a year’s
hiatus from the scene. Speakeasy is still the only
pub on the scene serving all your homemade hot
meals until 9pm every day, so get in for your lunch
or dinner before a pub crawl ensues.
Skip around the corner to Delmonica’s and DJ
Darren just turned 30. He’s been around for much
longer, so I think he might be lying about his age but we’ll go with it to give him the benefit of the
doubt. He’s a regular in Del’s hosting his very own
quiz alongside the magnificent DJ Will. The two of
them really do whip up a storm giving away
massive cash prizes and some of Darren’s Dollars
which are more than they seem! If you’ve not been,
get a few of your friends into Dels on a Thu and
make sure your team know what they are their
general knowledge.
Back round on John Street and Milk have closed
their doors for the last time as they transition to
their Clydeside Club V premises. They’re open 7
nights a week down on the Clydeside so make sure
you make them a pitstop before you head into
town for a night of frolics, I’m sure George and the
team would be delighted to see you.
Let’s stay on John Street then, and go downstairs
to The Underground. There are two fabulous ladies
who perform in here every Tue night. Check out
mother and daughter duo, Bee Fiarse and Tess

Tosterone as they croon their way through a busy
night filled with great singers and a great
atmosphere. The bar staff, whether it be one of
their regulars or a guest filled spot, are always
happy to help with a big smile on their face. It’s
gotta be one of your stops whenever you’re out.
Where to next, let’s head on round to AXM. They
held out an olive branch to the Polo Lounge and
wished them a Happy 17th Birthday on Facebook.
It’s great to see the end of what had been a bit of
hostility between the clubs and I hope it will only
lead to bigger and better things from both which
will be better for us as gays and the scene as a
whole. It’s in sharp contrast however to a certain DJ
who likes to post horrible things about certain
people, but we’ll not go in to that too much - he’ll
just know who he is! AXM’s Scally Ladz Nights have
been a great hit - especially when they get all their
Bar Ladz in to some Scally gear and post their pics
on Facebook! AXM not so long ago celebrated their
1st Birthday and it’s been a welcom addition
bringing the scene to light on some great nights.
So in talking about Birthdays, and there has been
quite the Birthday theme this month, Polo
celebrated its 17th Birthday. That’s right, Polo first
graced Glasgow in 1996 - when I was only 6 years
old. Gosh, makes me feel old. They had a week of
events, from a Birthday Hat party to a massive
Birthday Bash which topped it all off, I hope they
had a massive birthday cake though and I’m sure
my piece got lost in the post! Polo’s been all about
the live acts this month, introducing X Factor star
and Big Brother winner Rylan to a packed club
before he was later seen taking home a local
Glasgow boy! Tut tut! They’ve also brought a bit of
that “Purple Rain” spectacular, The Spanish Hottie,
Ruth Lorenzo, who wowed the crowd with her
massive voice and then so many pictures
afterwards. The gays love a celebrity, and a pose,
and the celebrities love Polo - even Marcus Collins
spent his birthday in the venue boogying down to
Belle De Helle’s Tuesday Tunes!
Let’s shimmy on round to the heart of the
Merchant City and we’ll start on Bell Street. Gay
Men’s Health have been running their swift full
sexual health check-up clinic for a couple of months
now, seeing plenty of gay and bisexual men and
giving them their results within 20 minutes. It’s so
important to go and get tested, because knowing
what you’ve got is the best way to get it treated
and stop you spreading anything. Get round to

Just round the corner May Miller’s voice can be
heard, with bursts of Barbra Bryceland and Michelle
McManus on occasion in Merchant Pride. Three of
the biggest voices can be heard in the one place,
that’s pretty special! Merchant Pride is tucked just
round the corner from Bell Street, next door to my
favourite restaurant Khublai Khan’s and is a wee
treat to go in to. The staff are always lovely, and if
you catch May, Michelle or Barbra you’ll be in for
one hell of a night (or afternoon, Sat and Sun
afternoons are great here!)
I had a very random, but enjoyable Mon night
out this month where I visited The Court Bar. To
my surprise, it was where all the gays where hiding
pre-Midnight! They just can’t resist the wonderful
banter of Audrey Hepburn on the mic, especially
when she shouts “He’s SNP!” down it as I enter. A
great night was had by many, and I’m sure the
same can be said for every night at the Karaoke
hub! Live entertainment, a beer garden and some
great friendly staff are all you need to make sure
your customers have a great night and this place
has it!
We’ve just got one more stop to make and that’s
at The Gallery - I’m not gonna talk much about it
because they’ve been my showcase venue this
month as the newbie on the Scene. I spoke to Jim
and you can read that interview in this edition, but
I wanted to mention one of their live acts. I loved
them. Nick Bruce and Friends - well friend - a live
singer and guitarist were the highlight of my
evening when I was in The Gallery with Jim.
Definitely watch this space because Nick Bruce is a
name to look out for!
So, we’ve almost got to the end of the scene but
I want to take a trip up to the West End and visit the
King’s Theatre. I had the delight to go and see the
UK tour of Hairspray, which included Waterloo
Road’s Mr Chalk as Edna and Marcus Collins as
Seaweed. David Ribi was a notable character as
Sketch, much enjoyed it. The gays were
everywhere at Hairspray, full review to come soon
before it comes back to Edinburgh and Aberdeen!
The month of Jun sees the Queen-Fabulous, CampTastic Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical grace
the stage in Glasgow, so do get along.

lasgow is renowned for its fantastic
collection of bars and clubs catering for all
tastes but earlier this year
a brand new experience opened up
in the classy Merchant City area. Say
a big gay “hiya” to The Gallery and
owner Jim Young!
Jim is a typical business man, he
noticed a venue which was in a good
spot and knew it would make sound
business sense to open a new venue
with a new experience for Glasgow.
But opening a new bar in one of the
city’s listed buildings wasn’t as easy
as you might expect.
“Obtaining the grant of a new premises licence
is a time consuming process, we applied in May
2012 and opened late Dec. It wasn’t
the best time to open a new bar just
before Xmas, but we managed it
and haven’t looked back since. A big
thank you to Greig, my bar
manager, not forgetting Chris, Ryan,
Des and Daniel.”
Jim took a modern venue and has
opened a really contemporary
relaxed bar with a great style. The
name also reflects something of the
bar’s character, if you like some
unique musical-themed art then
come have a pint or a cocktail in The Gallery and
admire the fantastic artwork on the walls from
acclaimed Scottish artist Robert
Miller. All the work is on sale, from
an amazing portrait of Elton John to
a beautiful Liz Taylor picture everything can be purchased there
and then!
When I asked about the name,
Jim told me he came up with it
himself to reflect the re-sale of art
but that it also had some other uses
- “The use of the seven colours of
the rainbow flag seemed like a good
fit with the name so we have a really
colourful brand which hopefully says we’re a gay
venue without it being too in your face.” - The
Gallery is definitely not a venue dripping in rainbow
flags and pink triangles, but it’s a classy, gay
friendly environment that everyone can feel
comfortable.
Live music is giving The Gallery a good niche,
with local bands and the less well-known artists
also getting a chance to entertain the crowds. A
rotation of eight new acts to the scene keep

customers satisfied with more being added to the
bill regularly. One such act who has been a regular
hit has been “Nick Bruce and
Friends” whose covers of some
fantastic hits have you up singing
and dancing in no time. Interactive
Quiz Wed nights is something
special using mobile technology to
bring a fun Quiz Night experience
with some big prizes.
Evenings and weekends bring live
sport to The Gallery, being one of
the few venues in Glasgow where
you can view uninterrupted boys in
tights shorts playing with their balls
to a huge TV audience! With fingers crossed for a
few days of good weather, Jim also has an outdoor
seating area which is a fantastic sun
trap in the late afternoon - perfect
for a beer and sharing platter this
summer.
“We want to provide something
different on the scene” Jim tells me.
“Maybe theme nights, including
comedy, we’re really lucky to be
situated beside the Scottish Youth
Theatre Auditorium and are in
negotiation at having some big acts
on a monthly basis downstairs
which is really exciting.”
I look forward to seeing anyone who has not
visited The Gallery yet and can promise you the
friendliest of welcomes and an
enjoyable experience.

The openly bisexual Jessie J, born Jessica Cornish,
is a genuinely talented singer/song writer. Even

Early recommendations include Michael
Griffiths at the Edinburgh Playhouse with his
show, In Vogue: Songs By Madonna. Griffiths
has no accent, costume or wig. Just Madge
accompanying herself at the piano, leading you
on a journey through her life.
Monica Bauer brings two plays to Edinburgh
this year. Made For Each Other is the 2012
surprise smash hit about gay marriage that
received five stars from ScotsGay and several
other organs. The Year I Was Gifted is a new
piece of work staring Bauer in the title role in a
true tale of a working class girl’s attempt to
survive a prestigious boarding school for the
arts. Two ‘Must See’ plays.
Sandel, Angus Stewart's cult novel of
forbidden love, has been adapted for the stage
by Taggart creater Glenn Chandler. Set in 1960s
Oxford, it tells the story of a romance between
David, a 19-year-old undergraduate, and a
choirboy. The book has been out of print for
many years because of its subject matter, yet
Sandel is even more relevant and controversial
today.

between life and death to protect the love of his life Molly who is unaware that someone close to them
is responsible for Sam’s death. The key to the communication is Ode May Brown who is able to talk
across the divide. This emotional story of the power of love has harnessed the best of the movie and
tested what is achievable on stage to the limits with the result that this touring production is a stunning
tour de force. Stewart Clarke and Rebecca Trehearn take on the central roles of Sam and Molly and
quickly establish their love for each other only to watch Sam’s death rip them apart. Sam’s best friend
Carl Bruner (played by David Roberts) becomes an emotional crutch for Molly in her grief whilst
harbouring a dark secret. Bringing comedy and light to the production is Karlene Wray (stepping in
for Wendy Mae Brown) as Ode Mae who starts off exploiting a talent for communicating with the dead
that she doesn’t know she has until Sam’s comes into her life from the afterlife. A simply stunning
production design by Rob Howell, harnessing incredible film technology and fully automated set, add
to the illusions by Paul Kieve and will have you believing that a man can pass through a door and that
spirits both good and bad do come to take us to the next life. The ensemble work hard producing a
stunning array of choreography through the show as the story builds towards the emotional and tear
filled finale which the audience watched in total silence. Director Matthew Warchus has delivered a
tight production with stunning values that ensures an unforgettable evening at the theatre. This
touring production has truly raised the bar on what is achievable in musical theatre. The combination

Whilst sitting on an East Coast train hurtling past Newcastle en-route to Londons Kings Cross ahead of a weekend of meetings and various theatre visits,
I read an interesting article in The Stage, the theatre industry’s weekly newspaper. The article was talking about Jonathan Harvey’s seminal Play, “Beautiful
Thing” which is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a new production. The stage proudly declared that GAY theatre was back with a bang. I wonder
though do we still need to label theatre which has a gay character or story element as being purely gay theatre that only appeals to an lgbt audience?
During the 80’s and 90’s, gay theatre was vital in sharing our stories as we strived towards equality and playwrights like Harvey really captured the mood
of a whole section of society. It was theatre that both empowered those who identified as anything but heterosexual and educated those seeking to
understand those different from themselves. While I was growing up and discovering my love of the theatre, I always admired those performers who were
brave enough to either come out of the closet or play openly gay characters - in my opinion there were never enough. The performance arts as an industry
has always be associated with the LGBT community as a means of earning a living but it took far too long a time to actually put a gay story on stage. So
the period that saw a surge in gay theatre was massively important. Looking at where we are as a society are now, there are openly gay characters in
soaps, sitcoms and TV drama and across stage in all mediums of theatre. We couldn’t have achieved that without those who blazed a trail and broke down
the barriers. We need to thank them for writing, directing, performing or indeed having any input into gay theatre. As my train pulls into KGX, I’ve come
to realise that gay theatre is not a label, it’s a banner, a banner we should be proud of. It continues to empower LGBT society; it empowers me to know
we can still share our stories - so long may the curtain rise on new Gay Theatre.

Grindr
I
’ve read a number of opinion articles, including
several in this magazine, about Grindr. The
overriding theme of any article about the app
seems to be a tongue-in-cheek complaint about
how everyone using it is a disgusting pervert.
Except them. I’m simply here to suggest that
maybe there are websites, or even public places
better suited to these people, because to use Grindr
and complain about all the people trying to hook
up is surely a losing battle, like standing on a golf
course and complaining about all the golfers.
An article I read went further and suggested that
gay men having casual sex reinforced negative
stereotypes, and was in some way harmful. I take
exception to this. Casual sex has been part of gay
culture in the past due to the need for secrecy
whilst homosexuality was still a criminal offence.
However, in this day and age, gay men are free to
have civil partnerships, and probably marry soon.
That doesn’t mean that promiscuity is wrong or
shameful. Sexual promiscuity is only viewed as
wrong by the same religious institutions that
thought (or still think) that homosexuality is wrong.
There’s no need for the gay community to adhere
to ‘slut shaming’ in order to achieve equality.
People who use Grindr to have casual sex are
never portrayed in a positive light in these
articles. They’re sad, or desperate, or pathetic.
People who admit to using Grindr will often
claim that they find it funny, or are somehow
being more post-modern than anyone else
using it. I personally find this condescending
attitude more objectionable than anything
that two consenting adults do in private,
whether they ever speak again or not.
Whilst Grindr may seem seedy or
clandestine to an outsider, the fact remains
that gay men can’t simply go to a coffee
shop and make fleeting eye contact with a
mysterious stranger, or brush hands with a
man in a library as they both reach for a
copy of The Old Man and the Sea. Most gay
men only feel comfortable meeting
people in spaces marked as LGBT. In most
places, this narrows it down to ‘the
scene’, and there’s a lot of reasons why
Grindr would be a more appealing option
to many people than this. Maybe they
don’t drink, maybe they’re seen as too
old by most people in your average gay
bar. Maybe, just maybe, they’re
violently allergic to the music of Nicki
Minaj, and don’t like the fact that they
play it too loud to hear what the
safe word is.

Of course I have no real objection to people using
the app for other purposes such as dating or killing
time, it’s more the attitude that I have an issue
with. We live in an age where wanting to have
casual sex is not something a person can
realistically be ridiculed or shamed for, though why
anyone would even want to escapes me.

sad, pathetic perverts on Grindr. I see no shame in
it. There’s no reason technology should be exempt
from making that area of life easier as it has done
with everything else. Besides, at least I don’t use it
