General Merchandising Organize rooms and displays by: • Color story or theme • Contemporary or traditional • Casual or formal • Group metals together by finish and style to unify the area (e.g. brass vs. nickel). Contemporary/Red Color Story/ Nickel Formal/ Green Color story/ Brass General Merchandising Brass/ Blonde Bronze color story Casual/ Copper and Iron/ Traditional General Merchandising Layering is important to successful merchandising. Strive to include an item of each element (glass, wood, ceramic, metal, textile or leather) into each display to create interest, variety and cross selling opportunities. General Merchandising Composition is key to successful merchandising. • Compose product into a pyramid shape and ensure all elements are visible. • Plan the highest point of the composition in the center of the grouping and reduce the height of items toward the outer edges – use a pyramid shape as the outline for the edges of product. Note: There are small pyramids within the large pyramid. General Merchandising • Multiples and repetition of an item attract attention and can increase sales on an otherwise unnoticed item. • Odd numbers of items are especially effective in this situation (3,5,7) Cabinet Free-Floating display Statement wall Global Views typically has three types of displays: • Cabinets- shelf display • Free Floating display – grouped platforms or floor settings • Statement walls- for high impact wall installations, anchored with platforms or large pieces of furniture. Cabinets • Place items in the cabinet appropriate to scale. • Place larger candlesticks and other decorative items on the top. • Group desk, bar items and smaller items in the center. • Tables work best on the bottom shelf. • Place wall hangings and mirrors in the back of the cabinet. Cabinets Free-Floating Display • Direct the display towards the traffic flow. • Follow the pyramid rule, with the highest items in the center. • Follow the mixture of elements rule, by adding items of textile, wood, metal, glass ceramic, etc. • Check that the display is visually appealing from all sides. • Anchor free-standing displays with platforms or rugs. Free-Floating Display Statement Walls • Do a big wall installation and make a few items important. • Repetition is helpful. Multiples of smaller sized items make a big statement. • Repeating furniture is an effective tool. Customers take repetition ideas directly from retail and translate to home, thus increasing sales. Statement Walls Final Touches Customers respond when product is shown at its best. These final touches will help. • Wash glass! Hot water is crucial and dry as soon as it is rinsed to avoid streaks. • Clean mirrors and ceramics and dust furniture thoroughly. See our cleaning guide for suggested products. • Adjust overhead lighting to highlight displays. Replace burned out light bulbs. Use a mix of spots and floods. Spots highlight smaller, special items by focusing attention. Floods give overall illumination. • Lamps should be plugged in and turned on. • Place appropriate candles in candleholders (Global Views has a candle for every holder, check the catalogue if you are unsure). • Hanging elements should be properly hung and secured. See our hanging guide for further information. • Add wine or champagne bottles to wine coolers and ice buckets so customer can visualize item use. • Put liquids in decanters to give a feeling of usability (water and a bit of Kitchen Bouquet makes great faux brandy!). • Place magazines in dumps and stands, place stationery or business cards in the appropriate holders. • Put images in photo frames. Using one image subject throughout creates continuity. • Place fruit and floral in vases and bowls. Hanging Guide for items with 2 holes: Tools required: painter’s tape, pencil, tape measure, level, screwdriver, screws. 1. Lay item flat with backside facing up. Place face of item on a soft surface to avoid scratching. Tape the back from hole to hole. Mark the holes. 2. Measure down from the top of the item to the top of holes. 3. Fold tape in half matching up the hole marks on the edge. 4. Hold up the item on the wall to the desired place and mark the top of the item. 5. Use the measurement from the top of the item on the wall ( see step 4) and measure down the appropriate amount. Place tape. 6. Use level to ensure that the tape is straight. 7. Use marks on the tape as your markings for the location of the screws. Screw the screws into the wall. Leave room on the screw (appropriate for item) sticking out of the wall. 8. Remove tape. Hang item. Stand back and admire your work! 1 . 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
