That’s what has helped us. One song that works well is You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC. When you can sing along with and dance to a song, you’ve got a winner. Run Around by Blues Traveler is a good one because it’s not a very “in your face” song. Viva La Vida by Coldplay, is really not a dance song but people just love Coldplay. Everyone comes onto the dance floor for I’m a Believer by the Monkees. (We do the Smashmouth version.) Sweet Home Alabama is another one—we do a medley with Sweet Home Alabama, What I Got by Sublime and I Just Want to Fly by Sugar Ray. Another great one is Raise Your Glass by Pink. Don’t Stop Believing by Journey is the only ballad we play just because everyone loves to sing along with it. ” ARTIE TOBIA BAND 1 Domaine St. Gregory 2009 Pinot Noir Mendocino County’s cool climate produces an elegant and rich style of Pinot Noir. Burgundian in style, this wine is rich and full with aromas and flavors of ripe black cherries, toasty oak and hints of earth. Delicious companions are duck with dried cherries, sageroasted double pork chops with stuffing, and roasted lamb with Mediterranean vegetables. $ 17 P E R B O T T L E 2 Rogers Mountain Chardonnay 2009 This is a delicious 100 percent Chardonnay from vines that are at least thirty-five years old. This Chardonnay produces a big, rich mouthfeel and is from the Russian River Valley of California. It is a nice aperitif since it is full of varietal flavors and not overoaked. Also perfect with grilled seafoods, chicken with a light sauce and healthy summer salad (but skip the vinegar). $16 PER BOTTLE 3 Nicholas Maillet MaconVerze 2010 The Maconnais region is a bit south of Chassagne Montrachet and has lovely growing conditions for this 100 percent Chardonnay. Nicholas Maillet is a very small, fully organic winemaking vineyard. This wine is great to enjoy by the pool, good for a light lunch or with a cold seafood appetizer. You can serve this to all of your friends and be the hit on the block. $ 15 P E R BO T T LE local band—cover THE SHORT BUS theshortbusrocks.com art gallery SAMUEL OWEN GALLERY 378 Greenwich Ave. 203-422-6500 samuelowengallery.com DELAMAR GREENWICH HARBOR 500 Steamboat Rd. 203-661-9800 the delamar.com happy hour + singles scene (under 35) THE GINGER MAN 64 Greenwich Ave. 203-861-6400 gingermangreenwich.com singles scene (over 35) + night club/lounge GREENWICHMAG.COM TAHITI STREET 1392 East Putnam Ave. 84 Greenwich Ave. 203-698-9033 203-622-1878 sports bar + live music spot BEACH HOUSE CAFÉ 220 Sound Beach Ave. 203-637-0367 beachhousecafe.com FASHION consignment ROUNDABOUT 48 West Putnam Ave. 203-552-0787 women’s shoes + designer jewelry + accessories + jeans + lingerie + gala (black-tie) + department store 205 Greenwich Ave. 203-862-5300 18 West Putnam Ave. saksfifthavenue.com barcelonawinebar.com outside bar tahitistreet.com women’s boutique INTERMIX 325 Greenwich Ave. 203-302-3200 intermixonline.com men’s fashion + men’s shoes + cocktail attire RICHARDS 359 Greenwich Ave. 203-622-0551 mitchellstores.com estate jewelry + local jewelry boutique BETTERIDGE 117 Greenwich Ave. 203-869-0124 betteridge.com SAKS FIFTH AVENUE BARCELONA 203-983-6400 swimwear GREENWICH TAVERN local hotel women’s ready to wear fashion OUT OF THE BOX teen fashion WISHLIST 350 Greenwich Ave. 203-629-4600 shopwishlist.com tailor L’ESCALE RESTAURANT 73 Greenwich Ave. TED THE TAILOR 500 Steamboat Rd. 203-625-9696 outofthebox.com 2 Church St. 203-661-4600 lescalerestaurant.com 108 restaurant bar 203-869-5699 WINE BOTTLE ©ISTOCKPHOTO/PETRO KORCHMAR; NIGHT CLUB PARTY ©ISTOCKPHOTO/ PITANGA CHERRY artietobia.com men’s watches The Best Costume She’s Seen MANFREDI JEWELS 121 Greenwich Ave. 203-622-1414 manfredijewels.com women’s watches SOPHIA SCARPELLI, O WN ER of S O P H I A ’ S PORTRAIT OF QUEEN MARIE ANTOINETTE 1783 BY ELISABETH LOUISE VIGÉE LE BRUN (1755–1842) OIL ON CANVAS. Add a few succulents to complete the design. Succulents are available in many shades of purples, grays and greens. T E R UP T is a middle school novel written by Rob Buyea, a teacher who decided to write a book about bullying in a fifth grade classroom from the point of view of seven children. Because it is told from the voice of the children, it is a very intimate read. Parents and teachers alike are using this book to talk to kids about bullying.” “ON THE BLUE C OMET author Rosemary Wells (also of Greenwich) created Max and Ruby thirty years ago. Her latest piece of historical fiction for middle school, , takes place during the Depression. A young boy time travels before and after the Depression on the blue comet to see why it happened and what the future holds. Choose a new colored fruit and vegetable each time you go grocery shopping. This will keep you eating a variety of nutrient dense foods. 2 E S T ABLISH A C O N S I STENT SLEEP S C H ED U LE : Get at least eight hours of sleep every night. Sleep influences neurotransmitter and hormone levels. In other words, it has a major influence on energy use and fat storage in the body. A consistent sleep schedule is a simple way to improve body composition. 3 S E T A GOAL FOR YO U R S E L F : Having a specific, measurable, attainable and realistic goal in mind will better help you achieve it. Try a shortterm goal first and mark it in your calendar. You can then plan steps to help get you there. A few short-term goals can lead to a long-term one. 4 I N TER V A L T R A I NI NG : When doing cardio, try interval workouts. Exercising at 85 to 90 percent of your maximum heart rate for thirty seconds, and then recovering for as long as needed to bring you down to 60 to 70 percent of your max for twenty minutes (the amount of time can vary depending on your fitness level). You will increase performance and post-workout caloric burn. 5 T R A IN YOUR BODY AS A WH O LE : Focus on full body movements during exercise rather than isolating a single part. Requiring your entire body to engage will increase the metabolic demand, your stability and strength, and make your workouts more efficient. G JULY 2012 GREENWICH 111
