Our Guild continues to meet
monthly with each Member
taking turns being responsible
for the planning of the
meeting. The following
Members volunteered for our
executive: President Julie
Russell; Vice President and
Treasurer Karen Barnes;
Secretary Charlene Taylor;
and, Outdoor Living Cathy
Fewer
In September we welcomed
Wendy Spurrell as a new
Member. We had a
brainstorming session to
compile a list of things we
would like to accomplish.
Some of the ideas included:
swimming, card making,
camp, travelling meal, recipe
of the month, birthday party
for seniors at the Long Term
Care Centre, and a Christmas
party with cookie exchange.
October was recipe night.
Each Member brought six
recipes to share as well as one
of the items to taste. Yummy!
We made cookbooks from the
recipes and it was decided
that we would bring a recipe
to each meeting to add to our
cookbooks.
We held a Trefoil Guild
camp in October at Alexander
Lake, Goose Bay with a
Halloween theme. Some of
the activities included: dress
up and treat exchange;
pumpkin carving; baking
Charlene Taylor, Julie Russell, Kelly Norman, Cathy Fewer, Karen Barnes and
Wendy Spurrell
using the pumpkin and
chocolate chips; foil dinner
with chicken and veggies and
dessert was pudding in a bag;
painting on canvas and glass
plates; needle felting; and,
Hallowe’en door hangers.
The Guild hosted the
monthly birthday party in
November at a Long Term
Care Centre. We had
musicians with guitars and
accordions for a sing-along,
bought gifts for the birthday
residents and supplied
refreshments. On November
11, the Guild paraded with the
Sparks, Brownies, Guides,
Pathfinders, and Rangers to
the War Memorial service.
A potluck of finger foods
was held in December and
Members of the Guild
exchanged homemade
Christmas gifts. We also had
a cookie exchange.
Kelly introduced us to Little
Dresses for Africa at our
January meeting. These
dresses are simply made from
pillow cases, thread, elastic
and bias tape. The dresses
will be sent to Africa.
In February, our Trefoil
Guild and the 1st Happy
Valley Rangers volunteered at
the Labrador Friendship
Centre’s Out of the Cold
Program. This program
serves a hot meal to homeless,
seniors and low income
individuals in the community.
A turkey dinner was cooked
by the kitchen staff at the
Friendship Centre and we
helped with set up, seating,
plating the food, serving the
tables, and clean up. The
Guild also took part in
Thinking Day activities.

Greetings from the Provincial Adviser
After a long, snowy
winter season, the thought
of spring brings a smile to
my face. Like you, I am
looking forward to
sunshine, warmer weather,
and spending time with
friends and family. I am
equally excited about the
upcoming Provincial
Trefoil Gathering. As you
are aware, the Killick
Trefoil Guild will host the
Gathering at Max Simms
Camp May 27th – 29th,
which is a great way to
Wanda Garrett to the
position. As always, please
feel free to contact Wanda

participated in for the past
couple of years. In
November we dropped off
hats, mitts, socks, personal
items, scarves and candy in
preparation for the cold
weather coming and we
learned of their pyjama
drive. We donated 22 pairs
of pyjamas.
During our January and
February meetings we took
the time to plan sessions for
the Gathering. In February
we also had a guest come in
to do card making with the
group, which was well
received.
Three of our Members are
planning on attending the
Friendship Gathering being
hosted by Can-Te-Ka-Ye
Guild, and several of our
Members will be attending
a Paddy’s Day celebration
at Meadow Creek
Retirement home with
Paradise District Guides
and Pathfinders as well as
Chamberlains Pathfinders.
Our Guild has taken on the
responsibility of providing
the entertainment for the
evening. We have four
ladies with guitars and
wonderful singing voices
and our Guild will do the
dancing and bring the green
food.
As you may know Sue
Garland, one of our Guild
Members, had surgery for
cancer (kidney) in
November and we are
happy to report she is doing
really well.

Christmas Social
Can-ta-ka-ye Trefoil Guild
Submitted by Gloria Learning
The Can-ta-ka-ye Trefoil Guild began
meeting in September after the summer
break with an outing to the Salmonier
Nature Park, followed by a BBQ at the
home of our President on the Salmonier
Line. Since then we held monthly
meetings in October, November and
January commencing with a supper.
Our election of officers was held in
September and all positions remained the
same for this year: President, Gloria
Learning; Treasurer, Heather Percy and
Secretary, Joan Monk. Also in September
Members of our Guild attended the
Garden Party hosted by the LOL Trefoil
Guild. In October we worked on a "glass
etching" craft and in November we
welcomed a new member, Judy
Henderson, to our Guild. Our Christmas
social was held at a local restaurant and
our members attended the Tuckamore
Area Annual Meeting and Thinking Day
Rally.

Heritage Trefoil Guild
Submitted by Vera Miller
During the summer we received several letters from other
Guilds thanking us for a job well done at the Gathering,
which we really appreciated.
We started our Fall meetings in October. The Guild
decided to use the Girl Guide stamp to encourage awareness
but we were disappointed that the stamp was not available
for very long and that it was not a permanent stamp.
Our Christmas luncheon was held at the Mt. Peyton Hotel
followed by dessert at Ethel’s and was thoroughly enjoyed
by all.
Some of our Members attended a Guide and Spark meeting
to make “Celebration Sally” and tell them about Guiding
history and Trefoil Guild Members.
We held a membership ceremony for Kathleen White and
presented her with her trefoil pin.
Our upcoming plans include attending the Crossroads
Thinking Day Tea and the Thinking Day Service.

Thinking Day Tea
Crossroads Trefoil Guild
Submitted by Juanita Andrews
Gander Crossroads Trefoil Guild held a luncheon
meeting at Rosie’s Tea Room, Eastport in October with
11 Members in attendance. In November the Guild
visited the Canadian Legion and met with the Ladies
Auxillary. The ladies told us about their role with the
Legion, about becoming a member of the auxillary, and
their many years of service. They were interested in
learning about Trefoil Guild and some of the activities
we are involved in. Lunch was served by the ladies. It
was a great evening.
A second meeting was held in November and two of
our Members made fish chowder and blueberry muffins.
Members then reminisced about experiences from
Christmas past.
In December, the Guild attended the annual pot luck
with the Gander Girl Guides. We presented them with a
cheque for $100.00.
In January we held a planning meeting for our
Thinking Day tea. It was agreed we would have a guest
speaker and invite the Guiders from Gander and the
surrounding area as well as friends of Guiding. On
January 29th the annual dinner was held at Gander Hotel
and plans were finalized for Thinking Day.
Our Thinking Day Tea was held on February 19. The
guest speaker was Sherry Kelly, case manager with
Mental Health and Addictions in Gander. Sherry spoke
about her role and the need in her area. She stressed the
importance of making sure her clients had the basics for
activities of daily living. Our Guild, seeing a great need,
agreed this would be our service project for the year. We
plan on making contributions of food, clothing,
toiletries, etc. throughout the year as required and
especially at Christmas time. A cheque for $50.00 will
be sent to Provincial headquarters as our contribution to
the Thinking Day Fund.
On February 22 three Members from our Guild served
lunch to the Gander Rotary organization and a
contribution was made to the Gander Girl Guides. The
proceeds will be used to carry out interior decorating to
the Gander Girl Guide Hut. The hut is well utilized and
a brighter environment will be enjoyed.

Second Annual Garden Party
L.O.L Trefoil Guild
Submitted by JoAnne Taylor
Our group meets regularly
every second week and we
work as a group to plan our
events and evenings.
The year began with our 2nd
annual Garden Party at the
Goulds Recreation Center. We
invited family, friends and
fellow Trefoil Guild friends to
come and have fun with us
playing a variety of events
such as the bottle game and the
cake walk, which was the hit of
the day. The day concluded
with introductions and a cold
plate.
In October Kim planned a
glorious baby shower, where

we all brought pampers as
gifts. The pampers were
donated to a local women's
shelter. The night consisted of
games that are normally played
at a baby shower, followed by
an array of sandwiches and
cookies. Later in the month we
had our Hallowe’en Costume
Party at the Lion's Club – there
were games and prizes along
with treats.
Barb C. planned a craft night
in November, making a
snowflake that was so cute and
we had delicious treats after.
Judy and Pat planned a great
night for our Christmas party
beginning with dinner at Papa's
where we dressed in our finest.
Then we went back to Judy's
daughter’s to open our secret
Santa gifts and our stockings.
We had a visit from a Trefoil
Guild friend, Pat Dwyer. The
night ended with Judy's
daughter putting off a great
police presentation.
The new year began with a
fabulous night at Cindy's
Casino, where we played
games of chance and had a
personal server. We had lots of
fun and prizes. In late January
we were invited by Lisa to
attend a Yuk Yuk's show. It
was a great laugh and great
munches. For our February
meeting we met at Dougie's for
finger foods and had a
planning night for the next two
months.

Birthday Baskets
Fireside Friends Trefoil Guild
Submitted by Sharron Callahan
The Fireside Friends Trefoil Guild began our new season of
Guiding with an Adventure Camp in September at LaManche
Provincial Park. We hiked to LaManche Falls in the morning and
to LaManche Village and the Suspension Bridge in the afternoon.
While Sylvia does not want to see another hill and Joan’s
collection of berries was not what she hoped, the hike was done
by all and what a spectacular conclusion as those of us who had
never seen the bridge ventured across, gasping at the scenery, and
used our imaginations to picture life in the village for the liviers of
the long abandoned community. It was awesome, and we
challenge more of our Guild friends to join us for the next
adventure.
Our next adventure was a sunrise breakfast at Cape Spear in
October. It was dark when eight of us went to Cape Spear at 6:30
am. Although there was a slight cool breeze and the night stars
were still out, what an awesome experience! With coffee brewing,
we cooked bacon and eggs and some of our chefs did wonders
making pancakes complete with blueberries. There are no words
to adequately describe the wonder of this morning adventure.
To celebrate Hallowe’en, our Guild went to Glow-in-One
Golfing (black light). Scary, spooky, and lots of fun, as nine
members challenged the golfing greats of the world for their
records. No need to worry, though, as none of us, save possibly
Bev, posed any challenge. Despite our high scores, which
apparently is not a good thing in golf, we had a great night and
lots of fun. Nothing could beat the gales of laughter as Barb
Boone practically jumped out of her shoes when the ghostly figure
in the electric chair let out a blood curdling scream right beside
her. To get the full effect, let your imagination run wild.
Our greatest accomplishment in this report period has to be our
service project of providing birthday baskets to the Food Sharing
Association as a part of the Eradicating Hunger and Poverty
Challenge. Our Guild prepared 11 birthday baskets. Everyone
thoroughly enjoyed doing this project, preparing a variety of
themes, and packaging them in an appropriate covering. The
baskets were weighed and amounted to 129 lbs.
In January, our Guild once again held what is becoming our
annual pilgrimage around the bay for an overnight of relaxation,
laughs, friendship and fun at the Conception Harbour Renewal
Centre. After settling in, we spent the afternoon catching up with
friends, chatting, telling stories, reading, and napping. In the
evening, some of us settled down with Peg to make a trio of very
beautiful cards, others played board games, chatted some more,
had our cards read by Liz, played cards, watched a movie, or
participated in a late night sing song. After clean-up the next
morning, folks began heading for home promising that we would
be back in the Fall, possibly November, to do a circuit of the
various local Christmas craft fairs.

Volunteers at Local Food Bank
Chickadee Trefoil Guild
Submitted by Winnie Marshall and Marg
Shea
Our first meeting for the year was held
in October. The Guild was delighted to
be invited to a Trefoil Tea Party hosted
by the 2nd Stephenville Rangers and
Pathfinders Units for both the
Chickadees and Sou’westers Guilds in
appreciation of our support, dedication
and inspiration for the groups. The girls
who traveled to GM 2010 gave a very
interesting slide presentation.
Once again for our Christmas
project we donated a basket filled
with goodies which was delivered to
a shut-in by Winnie and Mabel. The
Guild attended the Guider’s
Christmas dinner at Canam Lodge
and we also went out for lunch and
exchanged gifts. Our oldest member,
Roxy Hudson, is now living in a long
term care centre in Corner Brook and
during the Christmas season several
of our members paid her a visit.
During Scout/Guide Week, we
attended St. Stephen’s Church as well
as an afternoon tea at the Salvation
Army Hall. The Guild collected
money for the World Friendship
Fund. In February we joined with the
Sou’westers Trefoil Guild and catered
to an Area meeting.
Members of the Guild are still
volunteering at the local food bank.
Although we are “up to our necks” in
snow we still keep Trefoiling and
endeavour to Keep the Spirit Alive.
Lunch Meetings
Centennial Embers Trefoil Guild
Submitted by Joyce Manning
Our Guild meets the first Monday of
each month from September to May. We
meet for lunch followed by our meeting.
In September we had an outing to
Doreen Coady’s daughter’s home at
Goose Pond in Whitbourne. It was a
relaxing visit with a barbeque and lots of
fun.
Our October meeting was cancelled.
In November we met at the home of
Joan Cook. Shirley Jennings spoke
on the National Gathering which was
held in Kamloops, BC in June 2010.
Our Christmas dinner was held at
Susan Patten’s home. As usual – it
was most enjoyable.
Our February meeting was held at
Tiffany Village retirement home. We
had nice lunch followed by a tour of
the facilities. It was interesting.
Donations to the Guide Movement
were sent in memory of loved ones,
the World Friendship Fund and we
also sent flowers to sick Members.
Battle of the Brains
Golden Gems Trefoil Guild
Submitted by Sandi Hoysradt
The Golden Gems Trefoil Guild has
been very busy since September. Our
membership stands at eight Members.
September and October were busy
getting our Guild in order with the change
of officers and members. We met for
lunch several times during that period at
the Church of Good Shepherd
luncheon reach out program.
In November our Guild served hot
dogs at Sobey’s Square on Topsail
Road for the Lions Club at the Mount
Pearl Santa Claus Parade.
January the Guild had a quick
meeting and met at Pier 17 in
Churchill Square for a holiday
celebration. We all had a very
pleasant evening.
February was especially busy with
the Frosty Festival “Battle of the
Brains” hosted by our Guild - all
Members researched questions and
answers for the trivia night
competition. It was a great night for
all that attended and several of our
Guiding sisters from Mount Pearl
came along to lend a hand

Unveiling a Monument
Soiree Trefoil Guild
Submitted by Pat Janes
In September we had our first gathering
for the year and of course this included
eating out.
October 2 was a very special day as many
of us were fortunate enough to attend the
100th Anniversary of Guiding. This was held
at Bowring Park (inside the west gate)
where a very distinctive Commemorative
Monument was unveiled. This monument is
absolutely beautiful. The Trefoil that is
engraved in the center tells all who see it
what Guiding means to us. Then we
attended the reception at Hotel Mount Pearl
where there were all kinds of treats and a
cake that was identical to the monument.
How wonderful it was to see old friends and
play catch up.
At the end of October our Guild met at
Sobey’s where a world of culinary
adventures awaited us. Dinner was prepared
for us while we watched to see how it was
done. The chefs put on quite a show and
were very patient with our questions, giving
us many helpful hints. We thought we might
try this again in the future.
In November we got together and made
Christmas quilted cloths and baked potato
bags. Also, each of us brought 10 toiletries
items to give to O’Shaughnessy House (a
Convent in Carbonear for abused women
and children).
December, being such a busy month, we
decided to eat out at the Woodstock where
we enjoyed the warm, cozy atmosphere and
a delicious meal. One of our members even
had flipper pie.

Pot Luck
Golden Girls Trefoil
Guild
Submitted by Pat Hapgood
We opened our Guiding
year with a pot luck lunch
at Pat’s in Spread Eagle.
We were delighted to
welcome new Members
Agnes Newhook and Nancy
Warder. Beth Green and
Myra King have also joined
our Guild. Both these ladies
live in Placentia. Nancy
lives in CBS, Marilyn
Moore lives in Spaniards
Bay and Pat lives in Spread
Eagle. As you can see we
cover quite a geographical
area.
Mary Smith was elected
president at this meeting
with Dola Callan as vice
president and Shirley
Kinden as secretary. Pat
Hapgood remained
treasurer. Shirley Kinden
had been president for
longer than we will say and
the Members thank her
sincerely for keeping us all
together over the years.
We have finally designed
(actually Nancy designed) a
pattern for our part of the
Provincial Trefoil Guild
Tapestry. Now it just has to
be worked!
In November we had our
usual craft table at the
community Christmas Fair.
It’s always a great time. We
had our Christmas social at
Dola’s home. The usual pot
luck and Chinese gift
exchange was enjoyed by
all.
We continue to provide
home cooked meals for the
nurses at the Blood Donor
Clinics held in Norman’s
Cove. In December we
made ham, scalloped
potatoes and the works.
They sure look forward to
coming to Norman’s Cove.
Some of our Members
attended a Christmas social
at Blue Mountain Lodge
and entertained the
residents with some
mummering and music.
Some also attended the
Green Grange Christmas
party at Monty’s Restaurant
in Whitbourne.

Volunteers Clean and Stock Shelves
Baccalieu Babes Trefoil Guild
Submitted by: Mary Greene
The Baccalieu Babes have been busy
volunteering including cleaning, stocking
shelves and preparing Christmas
Hampers for our local food bank – St.
Vincent de Paul. We again exchanged
cookies for Christmas and got together at
Mary’s house for our annual Christmas
party. Three of us are planning on
attending the Trefoil Guild Gathering at
Max Simms Camp this year
Thinking About Downsizing?
Think it’s time for me to sell this house and
downsize. I’d like a smaller one…but where
do I begin?
How many of us have thought about this? “The house is
now too big, I am now on my own, the children have moved
out, I would like to move closer to where they are living.”
There may be many reasons to think about making
changes. Circumstances change, especially as we age. The
question is where to begin the process of making these
changes? What steps are needed to downsize to a smaller
home?
Take advantage of a complimentary information session
on downsizing! I will come to your meeting place and give
you information about what steps you need to take to sell
your house and move to a smaller place.
If your Trefoil Group is interested in this, just contact me
and we will arrange a time and place.
If you live outside the St. John’s, Mount Pearl, Paradise or
Conception Bay South Area, then I will get information to
you through e-mail, telephone or mail out.
Look forward to seeing many of you at our provincial
Trefoil Gathering at Max Simms in May. Our Guild, the
Killick Trefoil Guild, is hosting and we have a great
weekend planned!
