The Diamond - Celebrate Me Week
The Diamond …it’s all Inside! Celebrate Me Week Volume 12, Issue 6 Saturday, August 4, 2012 Going Home Talk As we prepared to leave Camp Patterson on Friday evening, we gathered in the dining hall for the Going Home Talk. David told us that he knows it is going to be hard when we leave here, because it was for him too. You’re going to walk down the hall and worry about kids making fun of you or wonder what clothes you can wear to make it easy. David still spends his day in middle school, but as a teacher, and he no longer cares about those things. If we can be strong enough to stand up to people who don’t treat others with respect we can have a huge impact. When David was in 7th grade he didn’t know how camp changed him, but it did. Camp influenced some very important decisions in his life, like choosing a career and his wife. How he is raising his kids, teaching, coaching, these things are all influenced by the messages of camp. We can see similar influence in many staff members who work or are studying in jobs in which they serve others. This week we learned about the importance of our choices. David reminded us that as leaders, our choices can change the Continued on Page 2 No matter what you do or say, I’m still a worthwhile person. Leadership SOD Today during SOD, Ashley and Emily introduced the theme for today, Leadership. Ashley L. spoke to us about what it means to be a leader. She introduced a different kind of leader, silent leaders, who stand up for people, led by their actions and kindness, and work behind the scenes. She told us that all leaders need followers. She told us that she was a co-captain of her swim team and mentioned all what that role included. Outside, the SOD Directors blindfolded Connor and had David, representing God, led him passed the counselors that were in the path between them. Then he was asked to walk the path again, but this time he was taunted with killer whales by the people on the path. They weighed him down and he couldn’t get passed them. “So I ask you to make full use of the gift that God gave you when I placed my hands on you. Use it well.“ -2 Timothy 1:6 God. He could barely hear The third time a group of camp friends chanting slogans surrounded him and pushed him through the mess of people putting him down. “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” -Harold R. McAlindon Continued from Page 1 world. David came to camp in 1992 and he loved it. He really took it to heart, but there was also another kid from his school who attended camp that week. The other kid was the popular kid in David’s class: good at sports and had all of the girlfriends going through high school. Even by 7th grade David felt inferior to his classmate. The following year, David’s sister came to CMW, but since David didn’t think anyone would have really taken notice of him with his classmate around he didn’t attend the reunion. One of the staff members, Mandy Morrow, asked his sister where he was. Mandy didn’t have to ask about him and David says if she didn’t he never would have come back to CMW. Mandy taking the time to ask about him has changed everything in his life and the lives of those David has shared the message with. As leaders, we all have the ability to influence others with what we’ve learned this week. As our week ends it’s hard to understand that we will never have an experience exactly like this again. We’ll never be all together again. In the real world there will be warm fuzzies, but there will also be killer whales. Remember that you always have the support of your CMW family, even though we are not with you every. We’ll always be part of the same family and we’ll always be friends. Random Fact: The grey squirrel can Page 2 run up to 20 miles per hour. “Don’t let anyone make fun of you, just because you are young. Set an example for other followers by what you say and do, as well as by you love, faith, and purity.” -1 Timothy 4:12 Diamond Inside Me Each of our STARS shared with us what they think their characters learned this week: Crosby: Miles learned to stand up for himself and to not hide behind other things. Ben: Shorty learned that we all have a diamond inside and that you need to surround yourself with good people and support them in difficult times. Em: Nikki learned to not worry so much about what other people think. Annie: Cindy learned that it’s not easy to face the pressures to conform. Evan: Jason learned that being good at something, like sports, is not as important as treating other people with respect BOOM CMW 2012 Play List Learning to be the Light - Newworldson 2012 Camp Song Tracy’s I Am Special Talk Golden Mop - STARS - All I Have - John Reuben Live Like a Warrior -Matisyahu Killer Whales I’m Amazing - Keb Mo Matt’s Canyon of Inferiority Talk If I Ever Needed Grace - Jimmy Needham Walk By Faith - Jeremy Camp Em, Evan, and Brian’s Choices Talk My Next Breath - Hawk Nelson Remind Me Who I Am - Jason Gray Whose Line is it Anyway?
