Join fellow members for a night of elegance and tradition at
the 2013 Commodore’s Ball. This special evening begins with
“Passing the Oars” and a champagne reception followed by
dinner and dancing. Back by popular demand is the lively

A GREAT SUMMER TO REMEMBER
There are a lot of great things to look
forward to this summer, such as the
launch of the reciprocal agreement we
have with Haig Point, the Club’s 24th
Anniversary, the Independence Day Parade, game nights at the club and other
fun and social events we have in store for
all of you and your families. Of course,
this already has been a memorable and
meaningful time for me with the new
role I have undertaken both in my professional and personal life. Thank all of
you for your support and thoughtfulness.
Your vote of confidence means so much,
and your excitement for me is truly appreciated. I am grateful to be part of this
club family.

welcome! Some of you may have seen
and met Jessa these past few weeks. She
is the new Assistant Club Manager. She
will be assisting me with all aspects of
Food and Beverage, including Catering and Member Events. Jessa has more
than a decade’s worth of experience in
the Hospitality Industry; mainly in Food
and Beverage. Born and raised here on
Hilton Head Island, she graduated with a

COMMODORE’S COMMENTS

As summer settles in, we are reminded
that “it’s all about the water”. Where better than the South Carolina Yacht Club to
take advantage of the water, the activities
it offers and the special views we all enjoy.
Nancy and I were fortunate to get a head
start on water activities this year. In early
June we spent 10 days relaxing on Elboe
Cay and cruising around the Abacos with
good friends. More recently we returned
from a quick trip to Pittsburgh where we
rode the incline to Grand View Avenue
at the top of Mount Washington. From
there you can see the Monongahela and
Allegheny Rivers merge to form the Ohio
River. It is a beautiful framework for
downtown Pittsburgh, Heinz Field and
the PP&G towers.
I hope all our members enjoyed the Ninth
Annual Windmill Harbour InWater Boat
Show. We had power and sail boats ranging from Hinckleys to Grady Whites, food
and retail vendors, exhibits, and much
more. It was a beautiful sight to see. The
committee headed by Muffy Schulze did
a wonderful job planning for and hosting
the event. We look forward to the 10th
annual boat show next year and encourage members to lend their time and tal-
ents to assist with
all the things it
takes to produce
this grand event.

jump on a water ferry, enjoy a beach club
and have lunch! The organizers who put
this together are to be congratulated for
a creative way to offer all members additional benefits. Now our challenge is to
take advantage of this new relationship! I

will take the time to use this new shared
amenity. Over the years we have been fortunate to enjoy many good times at Haig
Point, from spending the night in a haunted lighthouse to golf and dinner at their
clubhouse. The beach club has great views
across to Harbour Town and the new restaurant has excellent food. We look forward to taking advantage of this exciting
new way to enjoy the WATER!

Despite a few rainy days, the Junior Sailing program is in full swing and going
strong. We are thrilled to see many returning faces and new ones as well. The Guppy Class was treated to instruction from
world-class sailor John Rumsey. While
they won’t fully understand the significance until years to come, the smiles on
their faces show they enjoyed the experience nonetheless!
PANCOAST SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Bob Pancoast Sailing Scholarship
Fund provides an opportunity for children whose guardians or families do not
have the financial means to take part in
our Summer Junior Sailing Program.

FLEET HAPPENINGS
May came in like a storm as boating activities picked up dramatically. The Beaufort
trip, held the last weekend in April, set the
stage. Trip Captains John and Suzanne
Schwendeman were the drivers supported
by Bill McGrath. The highlight of the trip
was the dinner served at the Schwendeman
home on Factory Creek. So, while the Blue
Angels Air Show was not to be, this 2013
initial fleet trip, it was a resounding success—enjoyed immensely by Asphalt and
Water cruisers.
The May membership meeting heard Paul
Barrow explain the importance of pre-trip
preparations. Paul is a master at addressing
preparations for long distance cruises and
then relating them to shorter trips more
applicable to our members. Following Paul’s
presentation, some 30 attendees moved to
the Catesby Room for another super meal
prepared by Chef Kevin and his team and
served by our terrific wait staff. In the
middle of May the Cruise Fleet responded
in mass to Muffy Schluze’s request for volunteers for the Boat Show-- great weekend!
Thanks to all who went the extra mile to
make the event successful.
The June membership meeting heard ongoing results of USCB Dr. Eric Montie’s
valued research on fish sounds in Port
Royal Sound & Surrounds. Eric is an
interesting educator/researcher who brings
a special and important dimension to the
Lowcountry as so much of our environment is home to water creatures, fish, and
saltwater mammals.
The 2013 version of the MacKay Creek
Games led by Captain Hal Wood held on
the 22 June (Summer Sailstice) is another
for the record. Hal continues his innovative
ideas for good and safe water events. If you
missed this one, be sure to plan for the 2014
Games as they are now part of the Cruise

begins the Fall season with the membership
meeting on Thursday, 5 September.
Hurricane Season is upon us – again so
quickly – and it’s past time to prepare boats
for the Big One - which hopefully won’t
come! Captains recall, all boats should have
a written Hurricane Plan in the unwanted
chance of boat damage. Insurance companies are sure to ask to see plans and how
they have been implemented when claims
are submitted. Let’s not be caught short!
Let’s set the example for all boat owners
in the harbor. After all, active Cruise Fleet
membership is a big and important deal,
and we need to set the example for all boat
owners. By all means be SAFE!
CHARLESTON RECAP
Charleston was never so charming as when
graced by a contingent from the SCYC
Cruise Fleet this past May 30th to June 2nd.
Ultimately, nineteen Boaters and Asphalt

descended upon Charleston.
Sail + 3 Power) that set sail for “The Holy
City” (aka ChuckCity) on Friday. After one
planned departure from the trip following
the layover at Dataw Island Marina and
dinner at the Sweetgrass Grille, another returned home with mechanical difficulties.
Four boats made it to the Charleston City
Marina, eventually… The Pierces encountered a stubborn drawbridge operator and
arrived only after anchoring for three hours
waiting for the bridge to be reopened.
The Friday evening dock party was hosted
by Maureen and Bob Bush on their beautiful boat, Turangalila. On Saturday, a group
visited Patriot’s Point and was thoroughly
engaged by an enthusiastic docent, Bill
Creach, who guided us through the aircraft
carrier USS Yorktown. Others enjoyed the
many splendors of Charleston during Spoleto. Dinner that evening was held at the
quaint restaurant 39 Rue de Jean located
in the Historic District. Sunday brought
some occasional, but light rain showers to
chase the boaters home.

We are excited to announce our “Get
Fit” Fitness Class that will be offered on
Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.
Come on out and join fellow SCYC members in getting fit with Roberto! All fitness levels welcome! This will be a weekly
fitness class, held outside with various
stations to improve your fitness. Your
trainer, Roberto, will show you what to do
at each station, and scale it to your personal needs. Roberto is ISSA certified in
personal training, and we are very happy
to have his expertise in helping our SCYC
members get fit this summer! Whether
you have had personal training before, or
if this is your first experience, you will be
delighted to see improvements in your
health and fitness level. The cost is $10

unhooking of the rope at any time.
> Glass is prohibited on the pool deck.

that needs our attention, on or around the
tennis courts, fitness center, or swimming
pool, please contact the Pro Shop.
As a reminder, all guests must sign in and
pay applicable guests fees prior to play.
Guest fees may be paid by cash or personal check or added to the sponsoring
member’s account. It is the responsibility of
the sponsoring member to ensure that all
guest fees are paid. For your convenience,
any unpaid guest fees will be automatically charged to the sponsoring member’s
account. In the event that guest play occurs
outside the Pro Shop’s operating hours, the
fee must be paid within three days.
Players, please make sure your tennis
shoes have this tread pattern. The wrong
type of shoes are bad for our courts... and
bad for your knees! No cross trainers or
running shoes are allowed.

Community Association and Club and SCYC. Members

Appropriate casual day attire is required for the Clubhouse.
Dining in the Bluefish Room is on a first come-first served basis.
Jackets are required for gentlemen Wednesday - Saturday evenings and Sunday
Brunch in the Catesby Dining Room. Jackets are not required on Sunday evenings
or on special themed events. Ladies are required to dress in a fashion that is
compatible with that of the gentlemen.
No short pants or jeans are allowed in the Catesby Dining Room.
Gentlemen may not wear hats or caps in the Clubhouse.
Shirts and shoes are required at all times on Club premises, except around
the swimming pool. Bathing attire not permitted within the Clubhouse.
Smoking is not permitted inside the SCYC Clubhouse.
SCYC is a family-oriented club that appreciates well-behaved children, but they
should be supervised at all times.
Boaters must notify the Club if planning to arrive by boat, to ensure dockage.
Official Club Dress: Summer (Club Commissioning – Commodore’s Ball) navy
blazer, blue oxford shirt, off-white pants and club tie. Winter (after Commodore’s
Ball – Club Commissioning) navy blazer, white oxford shirt, grey pants & club tie.
When a cancellation policy is in effect, the Club must be notified of a cancellation
within the time specified so that charges to your account may be avoided.
While in the Clubhouse, cell phones should be turned off or kept on silent/ vibrate. Members who find it necessary to use cell phones while dining are asked to step into the foyer or outside.
