What a year it has been. We started the school year with our first ever “Excellent with Distinction” rating from the Ohio Department of Education and at the same time faced deep reductions in federal and state funding and having to make significant cuts in our staffing and operational budgets. The support of this wonderful community, even in difficult economic times,
manifested itself in the successful passage of our operating levy in November.
The passage of that levy allowed the district to avoid deeper cuts and staff members to focus
time on strategic planning and readying our district for the upcoming changes in curriculum
and testing. Our staff has spent countless hours adjusting curriculum, designing new lessons
and selecting materials to make sure we continue on our path of improvement. We remain
dedicated to doing the hard work necessary to ensure that our students are prepared to be successful in the world beyond the walls of our schools. Delaware is an amazing community, and
it deserves a school district to match.

Delaware City Schools
Implementing the Common Core Standards
School districts in Ohio are currently
in the process of implementing the
new required Common Core Standards
to better support students to be college
and career ready when they graduate.
Standards help set clear, consistent
expectations to help build students’
knowledge and skill in math, English
language arts, science and social studies. Having these clearly defined goals
helps teachers and parents better work
together to ensure student success.
Over the past year, DCS teachers and
administrators have been working
to develop new curricula in English/
language arts and math that are more
closely aligned to the Common Core
Standards. The new curricula will be
piloted in our classrooms during the
2012-13 school year and as a result
there may be changes in class offerings,
New Math Program
Recommended
Teachers in grades K-6 will utilize a
new math program in the 2012-2013
school year. The enVision Math program was selected because it specifically addresses Common Core Standards. Based on research and proven
classroom results, teaching with enVision is highly focused, more coherent through daily problem-based
interactive learning and more complete with both print and online lessons and assessments.

for in-depth coverage of the common
core and a conceptual understanding
of mathematical practices.

This summer teachers and administrators will be participating in professional development to help prepare
them for these changes. Teachers and
administrators will also continue to revise the district curricula for science
and social studies so that those subjects
align with state standards and national
frameworks. All of these changes in
curriculum and instruction will help to
prepare our students for the new generation of assessments that are being
developed to replace our current Ohio
Achievement Assessments (OAA)
and Ohio Graduation Tests (OGT).
We know that learning does not just
take place in the classroom so we continue to invite you to provide your
child with support and learning opportunities at home and in the community. We believe through our work
to continuously improve our curriculum and instruction and your continued involvement, we will provide
our students with an excellent education and preparation for their future.
District Adopts Unified Logo
During the most recent strategic
plan, the communications task force
called for the unification of school
colors, mascots and logos across the
District as a way to enhance school
pride in our District.
Over the past three years
all schools have adopted
orange and black as their
school colors and made
the transition to the PACER mascot. The final
piece of the plan was to
modernize and unify the
Pacer logo for use across the district
with schools and student groups.
During 2011, a team of school personnel and community supporters
went through the process to recommend a versatile logo with several

variations to be used throughout the
District. The end result is a logo
that is versatile enough for athletic
teams, elementary schools, music
groups and everyone in between.
“Community pride in our
schools is important to the
success of the Delaware
City Schools,” said Superintendent Paul Craft. “Having a unified logo helps
our community recognize
our logo and purchase
spirit wear that can be used
through multiple grade levels.”
The logo has been trademarked to
remain a unique image just for the
school district.
District News
Enrollment Continues to Climb
Delaware City Schools has made impressive strides in
student achievement over the past 15 years. At the same
time, growth in student enrollment has continued an upward trend resulting in facility challenges across the district.
A report presented earlier this year by Planning Advocates
notes that in just 3 years more than half of the district’s
school buildings will exceed their designed capacity. The
trend will be most noticed as larger class sizes from the
elementaries come together and advance through Willis,
Dempsey and Hayes.
“Creating adequate classroom space is a top priority for
the district,” said Superintendent Paul Craft. “Take for
example that the senior class that just graduated had 312
students. Our current fourth grade class has 456 students.”
The continued growth in enrollment has created challenges
in providing adequate classroom space as students advance
through Willis, Dempsey and Hayes.
The District facilities’ committee has updated their report
for short and long term space needs. The recommendations
include expanding current buildings so fifth grade students
return to the elementary buildings, sixth grade students move to Dempsey Middle
School and adding space at Hayes High School to accommodate the future enrollment.

Parents are encouraged to register their child for the 2012-13 school year.
Children must be 5 years of age by August 1, 2012, to begin school in
the fall. Registration may be completed in person at the administration
building at 248 N. Washington Street, or information may be submitted
via the district’s website (www.dcs.k12.oh.us). Call 740-833-1100 for
a pin number to be able to access the online registration. The following
documentation will need to be delivered to the administration building to
complete the registration process: child’s birth certificate, immunization
records, proof of residency, Social Security number (optional), and court
custody papers (if applicable).

Sistrunk earned Scholastic Art Awards.

Adam Pijanowski won first place in the district Rotary 4-Way Speech Contest and won the

The Hayes In the Know team had an exceptional season, winning many
tournaments and earning scholarship money for individual members.
The Delaware Lacrosse Club won the State Championship by defeating
Springboro on June 2.
