Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Los Angeles 2013 Annual Report More than a thrift store. Everyone thinks that the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a thrift store. But we’re more than a store. tch our Wa na “More Tha ” Thrift Store video at la.org www.svdp Message from the President & Executive Director T he Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Los Angeles has been a community stronghold in Southern California for over 100 years and has become widely known as the operator of two large thrift stores in Los Angeles and in Long Beach. But the Society is more than a store. It is an organization manned by over 2,500 volunteers who devoted nearly 263,000 hours to calls for help from the needy last year. We assisted over 159,000 people from all backgrounds with food, clothing, housing and other forms of assistance: • The Cardinal Manning Center for homeless men on Skid Row in Los Angeles • St. Vincent’s Family Housing for homeless families in Los Angeles • Low-income housing in Los Angeles and Ventura counties for the working poor • A prisoner resettlement house in Los Angeles • A seasonal Winter Shelter in Ventura County for the homeless • A free Learning Center at our Los Angeles offices for ESL and GED students • A camp for underserved children in the mountains north of Santa Barbara Your sharing of your financial blessings from God has made all our efforts possible, as well as the volunteers who join us with their time, talent and treasure. Thank you for your support and for your continued commitment to the mission of ending poverty and homelessness in Southern California. We continue our dedication to improving the quality of life for those less fortunate and offer our humble and gracious thanks for all of your support. In the true spirit of St. Vincent and Blessed Frédéric, Claire PadamaDavid Fields PresidentExecutive Director 2013 Annual Report 1 Saint Basil’s Catholic Church Korean Conference of Charity. Social Services A t 5:15 a.m. every Saturday since 1994, minivans and sedans arrive on Skid Row in Los Angeles. Into the Society’s Cardinal Manning Center (CMC) homeless shelter arrive soup, hot dogs, buns and 25 men, women and children from Saint Basil’s Catholic Church Korean Conference of Charity. The conference serves food to 260 homeless men from the streets and the CMC every week. “Many people love to help others,” said Conference President Joseph Ahn. Youth Vincentians serve food and play live classical music for the homeless. 18-year-old Youth Vincentian President Aaron Joo has served every Saturday since he was 15. “I had no idea people were living like this,” he said. “Our mission is to use the gifts God gave us to share happiness with our brothers and sisters in Christ.” 2 2013 Annual Report Earlline Anderson, second from left; Pedro Morano, center; and Vincentians of Ascension Church. Vincentian Services E arlline Anderson, President of Ascension Catholic Church Conference of Charity in South Los Angeles and her Vincentian volunteers make many home visits to the destitute. “Some of the people make you want to cry after you see how they’re living,” said Vincentian June Myles. Last Christmas the Vincentians found a problem beyond the usual need for holiday meals and toys—six families sleeping on the floor. “We decided to use our conference funds to serve these people,” said Anderson. She went to Elegancy Mattress and told manager Pedro Morano of her problem. Morano gave her a discount and delivered the mattresses. “It was wonderful,” Morano beamed, “the families were real happy.” Vincentian Ilegra Evans agreed, “I get a sense of satisfaction and joy when I know I am helping someone less fortunate than I.” 2013 Annual Report 3 Rosa on the right. Circle V Ranch Camp 12 -year-old Rosa suffered the death of both of her parents last year. A counseling agency helping Rosa deal with her grief suggested St. Vincent de Paul’s Ranch Camp as a way for Rosa and her sister to spend time in a fun and nurturing environment last summer. The agency and the Society picked up the tab. The girls rejoiced in the crafts, dancing and swimming but more so in the love and support of their cabin counselor Lisa and in a camp staff that stressed loving God, yourself and others as the key to happiness. “I used to be so sad about my parents but I know now that they are with God,” Rosa said through tears. Camp Director Ray Lopez said Rosa is a remarkable young lady. “She wants to become a CILT (Camper In Leadership Training) so she can pay it forward,” said Lopez, “Her strength and courage are an inspiration to us all.” 4 2013 Annual Report Richard at the Cardinal Manning Center’s Christmas lunch served by Citi employees. Housing R ichard was addicted to drugs for 40 of his 58 years. In and out of prison, he spent a year living in his car. “I finally got sick and tired of being sick and tired,” he said. He became a resident of the Society’s Cardinal Manning Center (CMC) on Skid Row. He quit his drug habit and received CMC support to maintain sobriety. The staff was able to help with housing. Within six months, Richard had his own apartment. “Everything was new—bed, ice bucket, fans, fresh paint!” he said. “I keep myself clean and sober so I can stay in my own place!” Richard returns to the CMC for various programs, but especially on Fridays when he a runs the Senior Citizens’ Bingo Game. “It makes me happy to give back,” he said. “Thank you for everything you have done for me.” 2013 Annual Report 5 Sara, Adrian and Maria. Society Thrift Stores S ingle mom Maria and her three small children lived in an apartment crawling with bed bugs for three years. “The children had bites up and down their arms,” she said. Her landlord did nothing to help. Finally, she reported him to the health department and was evicted. Because of the bed bug infestation she could not bring her furniture. Then she lost her job due to illness. She and her kids lived in her car for three months. At a rosary, Maria met Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church Conference of Charity volunteer Sara Magee. Magee helped Maria find a house. Then conference president and board member Adrian Dena brought Sara and Maria to the Society’s thrift store in Los Angeles. Beds, a couch, and clothing were all provided to Maria free of charge as part of the Society’s free distribution program. “There’s help out there,” smiled Maria. 6 2013 Annual Report Operating Statement—Fiscal Year 2012–2013 7% Other $387,867 8% Utilities/Rent $397,862 3% Furniture/Appliances $190,002 6% Clothing $306,570 30% Financial Assistance $1,579,744 48% Investments and Dividend Income $1,769,175 46+30+5487A 17+4+1731148A ASSISTANCE WE GIVE FINANCIAL SUPPORT WE RECEIVE 46% Food $2,397,028 16% Contributions $618,897 4% Foundations $148,804 17% Grants and Fees from Govt. and Organizations $637,708 4% Special Events $132,492 11% Store Sales $400,839 OPERATIONS INCOME & EXPENSE Revenue and Support Contributions $618,897 Foundations $148,804 Grants and Fees from Govt. and Organizations $ 637,708 Special Events $ 132,492 Store Sales $ 7,419,169 Interest, Gains, Dividend Income $ 1,769,175 Unrealized Gain on Investments $ 3,145,753 _______________________________________________________ Total Income $ 13,871,998 Expense Camp $1,175,934 Stores $7,018,330 Cardinal Manning Center $ 1,365,206 Affordable Housing $ 439,748 Ventura/Oxnard Shelter $ 372,583 Conference Department $ 1,071,995 Fund Development $ 552,936 Management and Administration $ 1,542,717 _______________________________________________________ Total Expenses $ 13,539,449 Revenues Less Expenses $ 332,549 2013 Annual Report 7 Thank You to Our Generous Donors!
