A Message from the President Dear Friends of St. Mary’s, Welcome to the 2014 Legacy Gala Dinner Auction! I am happy to be here with you on this special night, my first auction here at St. Mary’s. I know so many of you share with me a passion for this wonderful institution, and I look forward to joining with you in this annual event. Tonight, our Legacy Honoree is our past President here at St. Mary’s, Father Mitch Doyen. It is a great pleasure to be able to honor and thank Father Mitch at an event that is so dear to him. As his successor, I can see Father Mitch’s legacy every day, in ways both tangible and intangible. Looking around, we can all see his stamp on the physical aspect of the school; he took on the huge task of purchasing the area behind St. Mary’s, overseeing the destruction of the run-down buildings that were on it, and constructing the beautiful Divis Field, that now ornaments our campus. This capital improvement is an important step in our quest for sustainability, growth and improvement. Father Mitch’s intangible imprint on St. Mary’s is written in the hearts of the students here. He is deeply committed to every member of our community, students and alumni. He worked tirelessly to open doors for boys who wanted a quality Catholic education, and the young men at this school are a monument to his belief in the power of Catholic education -- specifically the Marianist tradition of education here at St. Mary’s -- to transform lives and futures for the better. Tonight, we have an opportunity to carry on Father Mitch’s efforts on behalf of our young men by participating fully in this auction. I have been here a short time, but I can attest to what a great school we are blessed to have here on the Southside. Our efforts depend on our community, and everyone here tonight has the opportunity to “pay it forward” through our support of this event. I would like to thank all of you for your contributions to the St. Mary’s community, both tonight, and throughout the year. Best regards, Michael F. England President Program 4:30 Mass in Chapel: Fr. Doyen Reverend Mitchell S. Doyen began his college studies at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY in 1979 and transferred to the seminary in St. Louis in 1980. After a year of study in Rome and several years of teaching and coaching at Duchesne High School in St. Charles, he completed his studies at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in 1991 when he was ordained to the priesthood. He has served at St. John the Baptist parish, Our Lady of Sorrows parish, St. Raphael parish all in south city St. Louis, St. Simon School in South County and as pastor of Ascension St. Paul parish in Normandy. From his first assignment at St. John the Baptist Parish in South City, Fr. Mitch has been able to continue his commitment to high school ministry and to engage in neighborhood development. “I actually taught three years at Duchesne High School before I was ordained, so I had that experience. And then, by coincidence, my first priesthood assignment was at St. John the Baptist (in south St. Louis), which had a high school, so it was a natural fit. I've been connected with high school kids my whole adult life. I liked it. I liked the interaction.” Fr. Mitch served as a member of the Leadership Team at St. Mary's High School from 1995-1997. In 1997 he earned his Master's Degree in Secondary School Administration from Boston College. From 1997-2008 he served as the Associate Superintendent for Secondary Education in the Archdiocese. He returned to St. Mary's High School in 2008 in the role of President. In his years at St. Mary’s High School, Fr. Mitch proved his commitment to Catholic education. His leadership at Saint Mary’s High School was a time of great deepening of St. Mary’s Marianist identity. Fr. Mitch’s model of discipleship of equals, devotion to Mary and to the Characteristics of Marianist Education are motivating and inspiring. A permanent treasure which is now part of our school is Father O’Shaughnessy plaza which Fr. Mitch advocated for and brought to life. In his own spiritual life, Fr. Mitch took the step of formation as a Lay Marianist in 2011-2012 and made his vow of commitment to be a Lay Marianist in April of 2012. His work will always remind us at St. Mary’s High School to “...do what he tells you.” In April 2013, Fr. Mitch received the Mary Ann Eckhoff Leadership Award at the “Archbishop’s Gala for the Today and Tomorrow Foundation” where he was described as a champion of young men who may be considered “at risk” due to financial and/or learning difficulties. In the Fall of 2013, Michael F. England assumed the role of President and Fr. Mitch assumed the position of Chaplain, where he continues to serve the students and staff of St. Mary’s High School.
