ARO u NDTHETABLE - Exchange Club Family Resource Center
exchange club family resource center A ro u n d t h e ta b l e A word from our board president Dear Friends: Two facts cannot be overstated. First, the Rome and Floyd County community has a higher per household rate of child abuse and neglect than the State of Georgia average. Second, having provided services in this community for over 22 years to prevent such abuse and neglect, the Center stands poised to assist our families in need. Since its inception in 1991, the Exchange Club Family Resource Center has been working with families to break the vicious cycle of child abuse and neglect in our community. The Center has achieved great success by educating parents on important matters such as time and financial management and providing a stable, loving and nurturing environment for their children. In 2013 the Center provided services to 380 families. The Center has an experienced and dedicated staff that is willing and able to assist families in our community that are at risk of or currently experiencing child abuse or neglect. However, breaking the cycle of abuse and neglect is no easy task, and it is clear that our community needs the Center’s services now more than ever. It has been and remains an honor for me to collaborate with such gifted and driven people as I complete my third year as the Center’s Board President. I extend my deep-felt gratitude to every supporter, donor, and volunteer involved with the Center. Your past commitments of time, money, and effort have made this agency strong. I hope you will continue to support the work of this important agency. I assure you the Center will continue to improve the lives of families in need and, consequently, strengthen our community. We meet around the conference table with staff and Board members to plan events, discuss strategies, and address challenges. We gather around the coffee table and kitchen table with families to strategize, to organize, and to find better paths through difficult situations. In practical terms, this includes: Helping a family create their first budget… Teaching young parents with their first child about what they can expect from each stage of development…and showing them some ways they can help their child thrive... Modeling for parents ways to play with and engage their children — without the aid of a television set… Listening to frustrations and overwhelm — and helping parents identify support systems and things they can do to cope with strong feelings without lashing out at their children…. Connecting families to positive support people and services so that families can be as strong as they can be... Fostering strong family connections In 2013, our staff met around the table with 46 families through our in-home Parent Aide services. Our evidencedbased in-home program connects families and staff together in a mentoring relationship. We meet with families in their homes weekly for up to 12 months as needed. We offer more than a helping hand and information — we offer the support to put that information into action. In addition to our Parent Aide program, we served other families through our Supervised Visitation and education programs. This work would not be possible without the support of our Board and many contributors — corporate and individuals — as well as ongoing support from the Exchange Club of Rome. Together, we form strong partnerships and we demonstrate that whether we gather round the table, fellowship at the table or lay it all on the table, we accomplish amazing things by working together.
