Baton Rouge has outstanding local cultural attractions, such as the
Old State Capitol, the Rural Life Museum, the Louisiana Art and Science Museum, the
Southern University Museum of Art and the Louisiana State Museum, a museum showcasing the history of Louisiana. Baton Rouge is also home to the Shaw Center for the
Arts, where you can view prestigious exhibits in the LSU Museum of Art and sample an
exciting schedule of cultural events and live performances in its Manship Theatre.
Additionally, Baton Rouge is a center for commerce, with several business incubators and the Louisiana Technology Park. We are home to Louisiana State University and
Southern University, and we are proud to have the fastest growing community college in

Louisiana’s capital city. In 2010, we will celebrate the bicentennial of
East Baton Rouge Parish and the 150th birthday of Louisiana State
University. And we’ve got more things planned than you can shake a
stick at ... a Red Stick, that is.
The celebration will last throughout the year, featuring annual events like our family friendly Mardi Gras parade season and one of the South’s largest St. Patrick’s Day
parades. Crawfish season is in full boil when our spring festival season kicks off on April
24 with the Baton Rouge Blues Festival. And mark your calendar for the inaugural Bayou
County Superfest on Memorial Day weekend. This first-time event features country music superstars Kenny Chesney, Taylor Swift and Keith Urban.
Foodies won’t want to miss the Second Fete Rouge Wine & Culinary Festival in August, and as fall approaches, it’s time to fire up the grills, loosen the belt buckle a notch
and get ready for tailgating.

Mike Anderson’s Seafood:
O
ver the past 30 years, Mike
Anderson’s Seafood has grown
into a Baton Rouge staple. It’s
the south Louisiana restaurant
that food lovers and football
fans alike turn to for fantastic regional food in
a festive atmosphere—and for fun with friends
and family too. After three decades in the
food business, Mike Anderson’s has earned its
reputation for serving exceptional south Louisiana seafood dishes in a relaxed, comfortable
atmosphere.
“When I started the company, I wanted
to make sure that customers leave full and
go home with leftovers,” says owner Mike
Anderson. “Now, 30 years later, they are still
returning because we continue to strive for
consistently good food, dependable service,
and to make sure the customers get their
money’s worth.”
Mike Anderson, an LSU All-American
football player in the early 1970s, opened Mike
Anderson’s College Town Seafood & Oyster Bar
in November of 1975. It was located on Highland Road near LSU and offered four different
po-boys and oysters on the half shell. When
it outgrew its space, the
company moved to its current location on West Lee
Drive and changed its name
to Mike Anderson’s Seafood
Restaurant.
Today, Mike Anderson’s
in Baton Rouge seats more
than 235 people. The company opened its
French Quarter location in the mid-1980s along
with a food court location at The Riverwalk
Mall. (The French Quarter location is currently
closed due to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.) There is also a Mike Anderson’s franchise
located in the Holiday Inn in Gonzales, La.
Loyal customers as well as south Louisiana
visitors flock to Mike Anderson’s for sensational fried or broiled seafood. Other restaurant favorites include a crabmeat- and shrimp-stuffed
fillet, Mike’s Special (jumbo shrimp broiled in
worcestershire, margarine, lemon and spices),
and The Guitreau (grilled fresh fish topped
with sautéed crawfish, shrimp, mushrooms and
onions in white wine, margarine and spices).
In addition to the main restaurant, Mike
Anderson’s also offers outdoor dining at The
Side Porch, which can be booked for private
parties five out of seven nights of the week.
It has become a premier location for hosting
birthday parties, reunions, corporate parties,
seafood boils, rehearsal dinners, small wedding
receptions and high school reunions.
Obviously, Mike Anderson’s has blossomed
into much more than a traditional eatery, but it
has never lost its main focus: a dedication to quality
food, friendly service and
big helpings! This should
ensure its position as a
staple on the Baton Rouge
seafood scene for many
years to come.

Over the Memorial Day weekend (May 29-30), the
Capital City will host the inaugural Bayou Country
Superfest in LSU’s famed Tiger Stadium. The Bayou
Country Superfest will bring together the biggest
stars in country music today, with superstars Kenny
Chesney, Taylor Swift, Keith Urban, and Brooks & Dunn
headlining. Jason Aldean, Kellie Pickler, Jake Owen,
David Nail, Gloriana and Justin Moore round out the
all-star lineup.
Chesney is a four-time and reigning Country Music
Association Entertainer of the Year, and has sold more
than 1 million tickets each of the past eight summers,
making him the largest concert draw in any genre
this century. Recently announcing he will not mount
a major tour in 2010, his Bayou Country Superfest appearance on May 30 will be one of the only opportunities to see this superstar this year.
Joining Chesney the final night of the festival are
Brooks & Dunn, the most successful recording duo
in music history. With 23 No. 1 hits, Brooks & Dunn
have decided to end their duo performing career, and
shows in 2010 will be the last chance for fans to see
them perform together.

Country megastar Taylor Swift
It all starts with downtown Baton Rouge, where
a growing cluster of bars and nightclubs on or near
Third Street provide a nightly menu of local, regional
and touring acts. Davis Rhorer, executive director
of the Downtown Development District, says the
music scene is a perfect fit for downtown, which is
also about to enhance its setting for live music and
festivals with a new town square, a new courthouse
and improved amenities. Nearby, the Manship Theatre
and the River Center are also top venues for indoor
events, hosting a regular schedule of performances
ranging from pop to Broadway to ballet. (See the
Events Calendar beginning on page 64 to find out
what’s on tap while you're in town.)
One of the most popular downtown music events
is the Live After Five concert series, sponsored by
the the Downtown Business Association. Taking place
in Galvez Plaza adjacent to the Old State Capitol
and across from the Shaw Center for the Arts, Live
After Five has become a Baton Rouge phenomenon,
drawing hundreds to downtown for Friday night
music, dancing and fellowship. Many use the outdoor
concert as a kickoff to an evening enjoying other dining and entertainment options on and around Third
Street. Live After Five takes place on eight consecutive Friday nights in the spring and another eight in
the fall, with a variety of music ranging from dance
mix to soul to Louisiana roots sounds like zydeco and
swamp pop.
The Arts Council of Baton Rouge has also charged
up Baton Rouge’s music landscape by organizing a
series of premier music events. On May 1-2, Baton
Rouge will once again hold FestForAll, our unique celebration of art and music, held downtown on North
CMA nominee and his No. 1 CD Defying Gravity has
generated two No. 1 singles, bringing his total to 11.
Bayou Country Superfest is the only place to see
this unrivaled lineup. Even though Tiger Stadium is
one of the largest stadiums in the country, seating will
be reserved, and individual concerts by superstars
like Chesney and Swift sell out quickly, so patrons are
encouraged to purchase tickets early to ensure a seat
and to get the best tickets available. Festival-goers
should also plan to arrive early for the Bayou Country
Superfest Fan Fest & Tailgate Party, located directly
outside Tiger Stadium, featuring country music, festive food and much more. And don’t miss the nightly
Memorial Day fireworks display at the end of each
night’s performances.
Organizers are expecting a monster turnout, as
people living in 45 states and from as far away as
Germany inquired about tickets in the first few weeks
after they went on sale. “I’ve never seen anything like
this, interest coming from so broad and wide,” says
Superfest producer Quint Davis, who also organizes
the wildly popular Jazz Fest and Essence Festival
events in New Orleans.

weeks, the Council will host its fifth year of Sunday
in the Park concerts, where Louisiana bands play and
show visitors how to party Louisiana-style. Held in Lafayette Park, the concerts feature a casual style, food
and drink vendors, and lots of families who come to
sun, dance and watch the kids play in the Shaw Center’s interactive fountains.
The Arts Council is also responsible for bringing
two more exciting artists to Baton Rouge in 2010 as
part of its River City Jazz Masters series. On March
9, Baton Rouge will host the Jazz at Lincoln Center
Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis at the River Center
Theater. The New Orleans native will perform selections from his newly released CD. Marsalis has earned
an international reputation as a composer, trumpeter
and artistic director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center
Orchestra.
Also appearing this spring is a living legend of
jazz. On April 22, Paquito D’Rivera will be at the Manship Theatre. D’Rivera is a composer and instrumentalist known for his virtuosity on the clarinet. His
music reflects his classical origins with an Afro-Cuban
influence. He’s received accolades for years for his
eclectic mixture of jazz, rock, classical and traditional
Cuban music. He’s won nine Grammy Awards and in
2005 the National Endowment for the Arts named
him a NEA Jazz Master. In 2007, he received the Living Jazz Legend Award.

Classical to ballet
For those whose musical tastes include a classical
bent, Baton Rouge has established itself as a regular
site for visiting global stars. In the past decade, the
Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra has performed
with Itzahk Perlman, Yo Yo Ma, Van Cliburn and a series of other music legends. The BRSO’s Masterworks
and Chamber series continue to delight, and special
treats such as Mozart on the Lake and the Brass
Band performances during the holidays enrich Baton
Rouge’s culture as well.
With the long-running LSU Opera program and
a newer organization called Opera Louisiane, opera
fans can also find several outstanding events to enjoy
throughout the year. Opéra Louisiane has helped
bring stars of New York’s Metropolitan Opera to Baton Rouge, as well as showcasing local and regional
talent. Occasional international stars pop in to sing
favorite arias and sometimes join with jazz masters to
truly delight fans, as in the April 8 “Opéra Louisiane
and All that Jazz” show at the Manship. LSU Opera,
meanwhile, is widely respected as among the top 10
university opera companies in the nation and recently
celebrated its 75th anniversary. This spring’s repertoire includes Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette.
Finally, the Baton Rouge Ballet Theater annually
presents “The Nutcracker: A Tale from the Bayou,” a
local interpretation of the much beloved Christmas
ballet. The Bayou Nutcracker has become a Baton
Rouge holiday tradition. Last year, the ballet was accompanied by music performed by the Baton Rouge
Symphony Orchestra. Held at the River Center, the
Nutcracker is a must see holiday treat.

and azaleas on South River Road, Sandbar dates to
Brusly’s earliest settlers. Constructed circa 1837 in the
Greek Revival style, it is a National Register property. It
was the home of Ethel Claiborne Dameron, who played a
leading role in the establishment of West Baton Rouge’s
first public library and the West Baton Rouge Museum
and Historical Association. Built of heart cypress, it includes five mantels, elaborate moldings and cornices. Two
antebellum structures remain outside the house—a brick
kitchen and a cistern with a brick base. (Private)
Smithfield Plantation House
12445 N. River Road, Port Allen. Originally constructed in
1875, Smithfield was remodeled in 1900 and includes features from both periods. While it is primarily a pretentious
Eastlake style home, it also incorporates Queen Anne and
Italianate styles. The home is also noted for its elaborate interior staircase and its size as one of the largest
residences in West Baton Rouge. It is a National Register

are the remains of Gen. Philemon Thomas, who fought
in both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 and
commanded the forces that captured the Spanish fort at
Baton Rouge in 1810.

oldest African-American Baptist church in West Baton
Rouge. Located in the heart of Lukeville, a state historic
marker notes the site of the original church and the
gravesite of the church’s founder, Rev. Luke Billups Sr.
