It is rich in wildlife, spectacular scenery and a wealth of historical and cultural treasures. The Waterberg is a harsh but rewarding area of startling beauty, a beauty which lies in its superb vistas, mountain gorges, clear streams and rolling bushveld hills, all rich in indigenous species of plant and animal life - including the ‘Big Five’. Welgevonden Game Reserve, is in the Waterberg District and is malaria free, making it a popular choice for tourists. Kapama Game Reserve is a 13 000 hectare nature reserve and is the biggest privately owned game reserve near the Kruger National Park. Mabula Game Reserve is a 12 000 hectare private game reserve and is about 47km from Bela Bela. NORTH WEST PROVINCE The North West is a peaceful province with a year-round, sunny climate, exciting wildlife destinations free of malaria and various cultural and historical attractions. Rustenberg is a national game area with a number of fine game parks where it is still possible to capture the solitude and stillness associated with nature and the animal kingdom. The Pilanesberg National Park, which covers some 55 000 hectares, is the fourth largest park in southern Africa. This malaria-free park is perched on the eroded vestiges of an alkaline volcanic crater - one of only three such craters in the world. Madikwe Game Reserve is a prime wildlife safari destination with mostly luxury accommodation venues. The reserve borders Botswana and is located in North West Province, 90km north of Zeerust, about 3.5 hours’ drive from both Johannesburg and Pretoria and is one of the few reserves in southern Africa, which is malaria free. MPUMALANGA Mpumalanga, means “land of the rising sun” in the local SiSwati language and offers exhilarating wildlife, secluded mountain retreats, wild watersports and some of South Africa’s most diverse and vibrant African cultures. Situated against the Mpumalanga escarpment, Lydenburg/ Mashishing has many historic, cultural and leisure attractions. Hazyview is close to the Kruger National Park and derives its name from the shimmering haze that occurs during the heat of summer. kruger national park Kruger National Park is the largest game park in South Africa. It lies across the provinces of Mpumalanga and Limpopo in the north of South Africa and now forms part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park - a peace park that links the Kruger National Park with game parks in Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Fences are already coming down to allow game to roam freely. This is the land of baobabs, fever trees, 5 knob thorns, marula and mopane trees, underneath which lurk the 'Big Five', the 'Little Five', the 'birding Big Six' and more species of mammals than any other African Game Reserve. LIMPOPO PROVINCE - WATERBERG KWAZULU-NATAL KwaZulu-Natal offers visitors an interaction of natural wonders, modern facilities, fascinating cultures and a rich history - in a breathtakingly beautiful landscape with a variety of settings. Durban is the gateway to this unique holiday destination. The Dolphin Coast is characterised by lush vegetation, cool breezes from the Indian Ocean, endless beaches and clear skies. The Drakensberg is awe inspiring with its mass of rising high mountain peaks, lush vegetation and adundance of birdlife. KwaZulu-Natal’s South Coast is blessed with golden beaches, rock pools, countless fishing spots and the opportunity to spot dolphins. The sheer majesty of Zululand will take your breath away. Under the hot African sun, the cobalt blue Indian Ocean, mangrove swamps and limpid lagoons give way to rolling green hills and indigenous forests which shimmer in the distance before they reach the Drakensberg Mountains. EASTERN CAPE The Eastern Cape, lying on the south eastern South African coast, is a region of great natural beauty, particularly the rugged cliffs, rough seas and dense green bush of the stretch known as the Wild Coast. Grahamstown was literally the 19th century frontier between the British Cape Colony and the Xhosa territories and the first point of major contact between the African tribes and white settlers. The city centre boasts a wealth of architecturally pleasing historic buildings and has a pleasant climate, with warm summers. The winters are cold, but this does not deter the thousands of visitors who attend the National Festival of the Arts in mid-winter each year. Western cape The Western Cape is a province of diversities, offering visitors a unique cultural and natural heritage and a rural easygoing atmosphere - coupled with a first world infrastructure. The Garden Route is a popular stretch of the southeastern coast of South Africa. The name comes from the ecologically diverse vegetation and the numerous lagoons and lakes dotted along the coast. Arniston is a small seaside settlement in the Overberg region on the Cape Southcoast, close to Cape Agulhas, the southern-most tip of Africa. The Cape Winelands is known for its exceptional wines. The area comprises of Stellenbosch and the Franschhoek Valley, where both towns are reminiscent of a bye-gone era. Cape Town is the gateway to the Western Cape and will delight visitors with its vibrant waterfront, Table Mountain, botanical gardens and historic wine estates. Hermanus is on the southern coast of the Western Cape and is famous for southern right whale watching during the southern winter and spring. 6 KWAFUBESI TENTED SAFARI CAMP Offering spectacular golden plains, breathtaking sunsets and Big Five game viewing, Kwafubesi Tented Safari Camp, “Place of the Giant Eagle Owl”, is the ideal location for a starry-eyed getaway. OKAVANGO DELTA A labyrinth of lagoons, lakes and hidden channels covering over 17 000km2 and the largest inland delta in the world. It is home to rare wildlife and the best time for game viewing is between May and October, as the animal life is concentrated along the flooded areas. A 'must do’ activity is a ride in a mokoro, a dug-out canoe made from a large tree that can move quietly through shallow water. CHOBE - KASANE, BOTSWANA The Chobe National Park and river, bordering the town of Kasane, is only 80km upstream from the Victoria Falls and is home to the world's largest elephant population. A river boat safari will take you close to these herds as they graze on the floodplains. Big herds of buffalo also frequent the floodplains and in their wake come the lions. THE MAKGADIKGADI PANS The largest salt pan in the world, covering over 12 000km of completely barren flatland. It is possible that there are still remote areas to be discovered, while others have been occupied for thousands of years, rich with the remains of prehistoric settlements. CLIMATE: November to March is known as the green season, showers are usually only experienced in the late afternoon with high temperatures. Rates during this time drop considerably making this an inexpensive time to travel. CURRENCY / CREDIT CARDS: Local currency is the Pula. US Dollars, Rands and most popular currencies are accepted. All major credit cards are accepted. LANGUAGE: English is the official language, and Setswana the national language. TIME DIFFERENCE: GMT +2 (same as South Africa).
