FROM LAB TO PRODUCTION
SCALE – ELECTRIC TUNNEL KILNS
eltech (Denver,
CO) is taking
the opportunity
to introduce its newest
furnace line – hightemperature electricfired tunnel kilns for
small-scale production.
Just as “big batch” glass
melt furnaces allow scaling
up while maintaining identical
process parameters, Deltech tunnel
kilns will allow processes to move
from lab scale to the production
floor under predictable conditions
to ensure product outcomes
consistent with those in
test furnaces.
< Please inquire…>
Deltech says that if your process
is ready to scale up but you don’t
need a gas-fired behemoth, you
should visit the company at Booth
340 to discuss your application
requirements.

press capable of producing
up to 100 strokes per minute while
holding exceptional green part

612 Press is part of Gasbarre’s highspeed precision press line.
Useful Information
This double-acting press can easily
hold tolerances as tight as 13 microns
and press up to 6 tons of compacting
force. It utilizes a removable tool
capsule that allows the operator to
perform tool setups external to the
press. When equipped with multiple
tool capsules, part manufacturers can
run one part while setting up another,
and switch tools in as little as 30
minutes, thus minimizing downtime
and maximizing production rates.
This press offers top punch hold-down
for delicate parts with multiple levels,

The press also utilizes an HMI
touchscreen to program and monitor
press operation. Process limits such
as applied tonnage can be monitored
and limits programmed such that the
press will automatically stop should a

and can be configured
to run in anvil mode for simpler
geometries. This reduces tooling costs
as only one punch is now required.
When equipped with an optional parts
handling system, the press can run
with very little operator intervention.
These presses are ideal for highvolume, high-precision parts. Doubleacting versions are available in 2, 6,
16 and 35 ton compacting force, and
anvil-only versions in 4, 6, 16 and 35
tons. Double-acting versions can be
optionally equipped to run in anvil
mode. All presses utilize an electronic
variable-frequency drive system for
precise speed control with no moving
parts compared with older mechanical
variable-speed drive systems.

Direxa and Ceritherm point out
that with tunnel kilns the kiln cars
are expensive to buy, expensive to
maintain and lead to high extra fuel
consumption. With roller hearth kilns,
the rollers go through the walls, leading
to parasitic leakages, heat losses by
thermal conduction, limitations in terms
of product mass and kiln width, and
unreliable product tracking.

the ceramic industry”
With research and know-how
combining to deliver energy
consumption reduction and improved
production efficiency, the Skate-Kiln
concept is proposed in various designs
to accommodate and optimize the
firing of various product loads and
output levels.
The second feature of this exciting
presentation will be the Ceriflow dryer,
The Ceriflow tunnel dryer is of a
modular design, where each module
allows different air conditions in
each section to meet the products’
specific requirements. Ceriflow is also
completely automatic.
Exhibitor Showcase
The companies say that the tunnel
kiln concept has not seen any major
innovation for many decades, and
the offer has long been limited to
two major types: tunnel kilns with
cars for heavy product mass and
firing cycles over eight hours; roller
hearth kilns for lower product mass
and shorter firing cycles.
heralded as a flexible and efficient tool
for the ceramic industry.
This dryer is essentially a belt conveyor
dryer with unique built-in functions
that allow more flexibility and ease of
operation by: controlling the air quality
with the regulation of temperature,
moisture and air velocity; changing the
load position, the conveyor speed and
the dryer size.
The interaction of the air with the
products is optimized by providing air
flow angle adjustments with regard to
the surfaces to dry. The drying tunnel
is equipped with blowers with swiveling
air flow, allowing different methods of
air distribution: co-current, countercurrent, from underneath, from above
or even through the products.

eramics Expo 2015 saw the
launch of interdependent
technologies that are
revolutionizing the ceramics machining
industry. For 2016, SolidCAM and
G.W. Schultz Tool
are leading a group
of experts with Gen
2 enhancements to
their iMachining
CAM software and
Cera_X cutting
tools. These
innovations work
in concert with
novel technology
from Tratech Corp,
the manufacturer
of the new ‘AGS’
CNC machine,
specifically designed
for milling ceramics.
The lessons learned
through the last
year are giving
birth to even more
revolutionary ideas,
with performance
improvements in both cycle
time and tool life.
Essential Contacts
Ceramics Expo 2016 will host
the exclusive launch of this
one-of-a-kind interdependent
technology suite, expected to
take ceramics manufacturing
up to an entirely new level of
cutting speed and accuracy. With
extremely high interest from the
aerospace, aviation, automotive,
electronics and medical equipment
devices industries, this is proving to be
a truly game-changing development.
Useful Information
All three partners will be present
for this exciting unveiling during the
expo. Each partner brings unique and
specific expertise to the production
process. SolidCAM developed the
CAM software to enable cutting of
fully sintered ceramics with enhanced
22
efficiencies, while G.W. Schultz Tool
created and manufactures the custom,
high-performance, patent-pending,
ceramic cutting and grinding tools
for the system. Tratech designed and

builds the first-of-its-kind, customized
application-specific CNC machine to
be used for machining ceramics in the
fully sintered (hard) state.
Ken Merritt, SolidCAM’s Ceramics
Manager, states, “The effect of this
state-of-the-art manufacturing system
is expected to be felt immediately
throughout the global ceramics
industry. iMachining for Ceramics
will have a significant impact on the
ceramics industry
worldwide. This
system offers
companies cutting

machining with
volumetric material
removal rates never
seen before, while
maintaining optimal
structural integrity and
geometric accuracy.”
“Simply put,” Merritt
adds, “This ceramics
machining system,
including iMachining,
the G.W. Schultz
Cera_X tool and the
AGS machine from
Tratech, provides
‘first cut’ success with
dramatically increased
efficiencies that result in huge
reductions in cycle time, greatly
improved G-ratios for longer tool
life, and significant reductions
in machine maintenance and
downtime, all coming together
for unbelievable cost savings.”
This eagerly anticipated
technology changes the face of
ceramics production because of its
precise capabilities, and speed and
accuracy in cutting through ceramic
and other hard materials – and
attendees at Ceramics Expo 2016
will get to see the performance
firsthand. An integral part of this
worldwide debut will be live ceramic
shaping demonstrations of the unique
CAM software and high-performance
cutting/grinding capabilities housed
within a custom-built CNC machine
at the booth.
