S
uper Cat Converters was established in 1995 as the collection
arm for scrap catalytic converters for Australian Metal Co. It is
a family business lead by Max Chiert and his children Mark,
Wayne, Jared, and Davina.
Our relationship with MagnaFlow Performance Exhaust was established in October 1996 when Super Cat Converters imported its first
LCL load of new aftermarket catalytic converters. This relationship
has grown into a true partnership between the two companies where
Super Cat warehouses almost the entire MagnaFlow range in 6 warehouses located across the country.
Super Cat Converters specializes in solving all emission control problems from early emission standards through to Euro 4 applications in
both ceramic and metallic substrate converters. We offer a complete
range of converters in all shapes and sizes.
From its humble beginnings Super Cat has grown into a complete
undercar warehouse offering standard replacement exhausts (in
both universal and direct fit applications) to highly polished straight
through stainless steel MagnaFlow performance mufflers. Whatever
your exhaust product needs whether it be nuts and bolts or direct fit
systems you can find it in a Super Cat warehouse located in all capital
cities (Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth). We look

Truck Exhaust Configurations
MAGNAFLOW’s Truck applications offer the customer designs with multiple configurations to meet just about every exit configuration imaginable:
Single Side Exit — Near stock exit point with the most sound control. Best suited to towing
hauling and cruising.
Dual Side Exit Before Rear Tire — The most aggressive exhaust note and reduced weight
for the customer seeking the highest performance and a truly aggressive tone.
Dual Split Rear Exit — Adjustable exit points under the bumper suited for most OEM
hitches with an aggressive exhaust note and additional flow capacity for a few more horsepower.
Dual Side Exit Behind Rear Tire — Similar performance and sound character as the Dual
Split Rear Exit with a unique same side configuration without issues from OEM or aftermarket
hitches or roll pans.

Australia: On-Road Vehicles and Engines
Australia Standards
Background
The development of emission standards for highway vehicles and engines is coordinated
by the National Transport Commission (NTC). The regulations—Australian Design Rules
(ADR)—are administered by the Department of Transport and Regional Services. Australian
emission standards for heavy vehicles are based on European regulations, with acceptance
of selected US and Japanese standards. The long term policy is to fully harmonize Australian
regulations with UN ECE standards. The emission standards apply to new vehicles including
petrol (gasoline) and Diesel cars, light omnibuses, heavy omnibuses, light goods vehicles,
medium goods vehicles and heavy goods vehicles, as well as to forward control passenger
vehicles and larger motor tricycles. They also cover off-road passenger vehicles (but not offroad engines, such as those used in construction or agricultural machinery). The evolution
of vehicle emission standards in Australia occurred through a number of regulatory actions.
Some of the important steps can be summarized as follows:
Emission standards for petrol engined light vehicles commenced in the
early 1970s.
A smoke emission requirement (ADR30/00) was introduced in 1976 for vehicles with 4
or more wheels powered by a Diesel engine. The alternative smoke standards were US EPA
’74 or later or British standards “Performance of Diesel Engines for Road Vehicles” BS AU
141a:1971 or ECE R 24/00, 24/01, 24/02 or 24/03 “Diesel and Pollutants” or, in the case
of an engine alone, ECE R 24/03.
The first emission standards (apart from smoke standards) for heavy Diesel fueled
vehicles became effective in 1995 for all new models and in 1996 for all existing models.
These emission standards were introduced via ADR70/00 (adopting ECE R49, US & Japanese
HDV standards). The requirements of the 1995/96 standards were:
Required: Euro 1 for both light-duty and heavy-duty (heavy goods) vehicles. Euro 2 and
3 were also accepted though not included in the regulation.
Acceptable alternatives: US EPA ’91 or ’94 (EPA ’98 was also accepted though
not included in the regulation); 1993 Japanese exhaust emission standards for “light
duty and medium duty vehicles” and 1994 Japanese exhaust emission standards for
“passenger cars and heavy duty vehicles”.
A second round of more stringent emission standards applied from 2002/2003 model
year (for new/existing models). The standards—initially equivalent to Euro 2/3—have
been gradually tightened to adopt Euro 4 for light-duty cars and trucks (diesel and
petrol), and Euro 5 for heavy-duty Diesel engines.
Emission Standards (2002/03 And Later)
The emission standards were introduced via two new series of ADRs, which apply to
vehicles depending on their gross vehicle mass (GVM):
ADR79/00, ADR79/01, and ADR79/02 for light-duty vehicles at or below 3.5 t
GVM (replacing ADR37/01)
ADR80/00, ADR80/01, ADR80/02, and ADR80/03 for heavy-duty vehicles above
3.5 t GVM (replacing ADR70/00)
The new ADRs apply to new vehicles fueled with petrol, Diesel, as well as with LPG
or natural gas, with an implementation schedule from 2002/3 to 2010/11. The
requirements are summarized in Table 1 (the requirements and dates for heavy LPG
and NG vehicles are the same as for diesel).
The two year date combinations shown in the table refer to the dates applicable to
new model vehicles and all model vehicles, respectively. For example, in the case of
02/03, this means that from 1 January 2002 any new model first produced with a date
of manufacture after 1 January 2002 must comply with the ADR, and from 1 January
2003 all new vehicles (regardless of the first production date for that particular
model) must comply.

The “core” Euro 5 requirements which apply in ADR79/03 require compliance with all the technical requirements of UN
Regulation 83/06 except that ADR79/03:
• allows the provision of PM mass emissions data based on the previous UN R83/05 (Annex 4) Type I test procedure
(with a PM mass emissions limit of 0.005g/km) in lieu of data collected under the revised test procedure (Annex 4a of
UN R83/06) which specifies a limit of 0.0045g/km);
• accepts a relaxed OBD threshold limit (80mg/km) for PM mass for M and N category vehicles of reference mass >1760kg;
• does not require compliance with the PM number limit specified for diesel vehicles in UN R83/06;
• does not require compliance with the In Use Performance Ratio for OBD systems in UN R83/06;
• does not require the NOx monitoring for petrol vehicles specified in UN R83/06; and
• only requires flex fuel vehicles to meet the Type VI test when tested on petrol (details of requirements for flex fuel
vehicles to meet the Type VI test under ADR79/04 and ADR79/05 at low temperature to be determined by 31 December 2011).
Euro 4 was first adopted for light diesel vehicles in ADR79/01, but was effectively replaced by ADR79/02 from 1/7/08.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER
DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
The catalytic converter is a passive aftertreatment device designed to reduce
engine-out emission levels to meet an
acceptable standard. Together with the
Oxygen Sensors and other Engine Management components, this Emissions System
works to reduce harmful emissions at the
tail pipe. The catalytic converter contains
two or more ceramic substrates, coated
with a combination of Platinum, Palladium
and Rhodium and a Ceria based wash coat,
packed into a stainless steel housing. When
placed in the right environment of heat
(400°C) and proper air/fuel mixture the
catalyst forces a chemical reaction reducing toxic gasses to less harmful ones.
OBDII
CONVERTER EFFICIENCY
There were many changes that took place
with the implementation of OBDII but the
change having the greatest affect on diagnostics was the Readiness Monitors. During
operation, the on-board computer (PCM),
continually tests itself and all emission com-
ponents reporting to it. This monitoring process assures each component or system is
operating within a pre-programmed set of
parameters. The Catalyst Monitor utilizes
pre and post converter oxygen sensors to
continually check the oxygen storage capacity
of the converter. During normal operation,
the pre-cat O2 or Sensor 1 should display a
rapidly changing voltage signal ranging from
approximately 0V to 1V. The post-cat O2
will be flat line displaying little or no variation
in its signal.
P0420
DIAGNOSTICS & TESTING
A P0420 (Catalyst System Bank 1 Efficiency Below
Threshold) or a P0430 (Bank 2), are indicators that
the converter may not be functioning properly, but
are not the end of the diagnosis. There are a number
of steps that must be taken to assure that the root
cause of the failure is found and repaired.
• Test drive the vehicle and note any driveability issues that may indicate fuel or
spark delivery problems such as hesitation,
stumbling, spark knock, or misfire.
• Check the tail pipe upon start-up. Look
for any signs of smoke that would indicate
an engine failure such as oil burning (blue),
internal coolant leak (white) or rich running condition (black).

• Complete visual inspection of ignition,
fuel and intake components.
• Scan Tool test. Avoid clearing codes until
‘Freeze Frame’ information can be retrieved.
This is a snap shot of what was going on
with the vehicle when the code was set
such as temperature, vehicle speed, load,
throttle position etc. Using this information
you can duplicate the conditions that set
the code in the first place.

CONVERTER BASICS
TEMPERATURE
& SHELL DISCOLORATION
Catalytic converter shell coloration is a good indicator of Converter
efficiency and light-off. Converter efficiency depends on factors
including exhaust gas composition and temperatures. Converter internal
reactions (light-off) begin to occur at exhaust gas temperatures between
400° and 800° C. High operating temperatures should be avoided to
prevent degradation of the converter. Always note any conditions
that may prevent a converter from reaching light-off temperature.
EXHAUST COMPONENT INSPECTION
UPON REMOVAL OF CONVERTER
• Check manifold and exhaust pipes for leaks
• Melted substrate
• Check for any physical damage to the converter housing
• O2 sensor wiring to ensure good contact at the connectors
and no damage or shorted wires
• Check for missing, cracked or loose substrate
• Severe discoloration indicating excessive temperature
• Excessive build-up of carbon, soot or oil on the inside
of converter and/or connecting pipes

a direct affect on the converters ability to function

• Check the OBDII Readiness Indicators
(Monitors) to ensure all have been run to

LTFT is an indicator of the PCM’s fuel trim
history and is a good way to determine if

premature failure of the converter. LTFT is
given in percentage. A lean running engine
displays a positive % because the PCM
will be adding fuel to compensate while a
negative % tells us the computer is trying
to over come a rich running engine.

TECHNICAL
SERVICE BULLETIN
Technical Service Bulletins or TSB’s are published by the
manufacturer to address particular issues, repairs or updates
to a vehicle’s systems or components. Advances in technology
have created scenarios whereby a software update to
the vehicle’s computer may be all that is needed to repair
a driveability issue. Intermittent MIL (Check Engine light)
illumination, premature or false codes are also instances
that might only call for a software update. Reprogramming
or reflashing are terms commonly used to describe these
operations. TSB’s are very specific and will clearly spell
out what vehicles, systems and components the bulletins
are addressing and what actions are to be taken including
any updated components and/or reprogramming necessary
for a proper repair.
CAUSES OF CATALYTIC
CONVERTER FAILURE
Here are some common component failures
that can lead to converter damage:
• Intake leak
• Exhaust leak
• Fuel Injector leakage
• Defective front O2 sensor
• Defective Mass Air Flow meter (MAF)
• Defective Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor (MAP)
• Defective Engine Coolant Temperature sensor (ECT)
Following are the more common contaminants
that will affect O2 and converter performance:
• Oil – bad rings or valve seals
• Sulfur – found in some low quality gasoline
• Silicone – found in most gasket sealants unless
marked “O2 sensor safe”
• Coolant – damaged head gaskets or intake plenums

• Choose the right converter through application look-up
• Replacement converter should be in same position as OE
• Install all oxygen sensors as close to OE position as possible
• Maintain all heat shields for proper converter light-off
• Always check for leaks after repairs
