The Bear Facts New Teachers at Alcester-Hudson! Volume 3 Issue 1 September 2015 New Students! By Brigita Rasmussen While you’re going from class to class this year you might see some new faces in the hall. These faces would include our new art and choir teachers, Mrs. Michelle Riedel and Mrs. Kari Schnathorst, as well as Mrs. Ashley Oberg who will be with Adrian this year. Mrs. Riedel, will be teaching art this year and is from Iowa, she attended the University of Northern Iowa and taught at Cresco, Iowa for four years. She just moved into the area and is excited for the technology we have, she will be teaching kindergarten through 12th grade, and to be bringing art back into the school! Our new choir teacher, Ms. Schnathorst, is originally from Huron, went to Dakota Wesleyan and taught band and choir at Iroquois for six years. “I chose to come here because my previous job was very hard, and I wanted to move closer to southeast South Dakota. This school seemed to be the best fit and most supportive of its teachers.” She’s also excited to get to know everyone and see their personalities come out. Mrs. Oberg is from Alcester and attended Presentation college and Kilian Community College. It is her first time working in the school system, she grew up an Alcester-Hudson Cub, loves the school district , and believes it’s a good school for our children, and a great place to work. “I’m excited to work with students to help them achieve their goals and to learn. I am even more excited to be working with a great staff at the school and to be more involved.” Welcome to AHHS! Michelle Reidel Kari Schnathorst Ashley Oberg By Brigita Rasmussen There are many new faces this year at AlcesterHudson. These new students include senior Dakota Harvey, freshman Robert Topping, sophomore Opano Hoy, freshman Claudia Phillips, and eighth grader Joel Phillips. Senior Dakota Harvey said “I’m enjoying football, the teachers, and all of the students here.” While freshman Claudia Phillips says “I enjoy all of the people here.” Welcome to Alcester-Hudson Schools! School Improvements By Zach Ronning Throughout the summer, the Alcester-Hudson janitorial staff, with the help of a couple of volunteers, made many improvements to both the high school and elementary school. The schools were even featured on “Keloland News” due to all of the improvements. The main job of the summer was the installation of new bleachers in the main elementary gym. Another project was to add some blue and gold paint to many places around the district. They painted walls, mailboxes, poles, etc. In an interview on “Keloland News”, Senior and summer employee, Alex Pulscher, said, "There's a lot of pride in our community. Even if I wasn't getting paid for this, I still love to help. It's great!” Thanks to the hard work of the janitors and other volunteers, the schools look the best they have in years. The added color makes everyone feel more of that special “Cub Pride”. A special thanks to everyone who helped out this summer to the make schools look so great! 2 2 Sports The Boys of Fall By Mitchell Johnson School records broken, undefeated regular season, and all-state football players. The 2014 season was a great one for the Alcester-Hudson football team. The Cubs 2015 gridiron gang looks to be just as successful. The team returns six starters on offense and five on defense. This includes All-State honorable mention quarterback, Grant Johnson, and All-Conference honorable players, Mitchell Johnson and Gavin Doering. This year’s Cubs will continue to run their high, flying spread offense. Returning hogs up front will be Gavin Doering and Nick Johannsen. They will be joined by a combination of Alex Pulscher and Zach McKee. Out wide will be Sam Jensen, Eli Skoglund, Logan McConnell, and Zach Ronning. Behind center will be four year starting quarterback, Grant Johnson, and fullback will be Mitchell Johnson. Sophomore, Connor Sogn, is a player to watch as he will be sure to get key minutes at wingback. Defensively, the cubs will look to be strong once again. Linebackers will be Mitchell Johnson, Gavin Doering, and Logan McConnell. To quote Gavin Doering, “Nothing gets by the linebackers.” But in case it does the cubs will have Cross Country Preview vicious safeties Grant Johnson and Sam Jensen. The team opened with a dominant performance over the Viborg-Hurley Cougars winning 42-16. The following week the Cubs lost in a heartbreaker to the Chester Flyers 15-14, in the FCA bowl. During homecoming week, the team beat Garretson 48-26. The squad looks for- ward to seeing the stands full of fans and hearing the roar of our Alcester-Hudson faithful! Volleyball Season Preview By Zach Mckee By Sam Jensen The cross country team has grown in number, adding new members to the team. On the boys side we have Brayden Pulscher and newcomer, Christian Irvin-Young. Two returning veterans, Kendra Jensen and Tori Rasmussen, will lead the girl’s side of the team. New members include Kara Weddle, Ashley Weddle, Jordyn Rasmussen, and Elena Waite. “I wish we had more boys out, but the girls are ready to compete. My ultimate goal this season is having the girl’s team qualify for state” said coach, Mrs. Haisch. After a couple meets, the team seems promising. Kendra Jensen placed 14th at the Dakota Valley meet and at Scotland, the girl’s team placed fourth overall with Kendra Jensen placing 8th, Ashley Weddle placing 16th, Elena Waite placing 19th, and Kara Weddle placing 21st. Good Luck to the 2015 cross country team! The Alcester Hudson Cubs Volleyball season opened September 1st at home against the Baltic Bulldogs with a loss. They continued the start of their season with games against Gayville-Volin, Marion, Dakota Valley, and Parker. The defeated Marion 3-0 for their first win of the year. We have a lot of potential and qualities that will help us go far this season”, stated Coach Swanson. What is your biggest team goal this year? Junior outside Hitter, Kassidy Walth said, “To never play down to the other team’s level.” As far as how the players feel the season will go, senior libero, Brianna Walth, commented, “As long as we play as a team, then we will be successful.” Good luck to the Lady Cubs Volleyball team and we wish you much success this season! Organizations 3 FFA and FCCLA By Marshall Christensen “The year has started off great, we are really busy and getting ready for our fall leadership CDE's,” says Mr. Scalise. We have started a new enrollment system called Affiliation. This means if a student is enrolled in an Ag class they are automatically enrolled in FFA. This opens up more opportunities to students in the forms of scholarships and proficiencies. This year eight students attended the South Dakota State Fair to work the State FFA animal barn for fundraising. Later this year we are taking six students to National FFA convention in Louisville, Kentucky. “AHHS FCCLA has been flying up, up, and away recruiting new members, promoting leadership, and participating in many activities to benefit members, the school, and community,” said Advisor Miss Hillary McNamara. Both FFA and FCCLA members are looking forward to the new year. 10 Things You’ll Miss about Summer By Brianna Walth 10. Making money at summer jobs 9. Team sport camps 8. Staying up late 7. Kinzi DeBruin : “Spending the weekend in Okoboji” Kendra Jensen: “Going to Detroit” Eli Skoglund: “State baseball” Schools are moving back their start of school to after Labor Day. Now this seems foreign to us, it is not something completely out of the norm. Our neighboring state, Minnesota, has a state law that requires most schools to wait until after Labor Day to start school. Therefore many schools are pushing to get their school district to make a change for the better. There are various reasons as to why starting school after Labor Day is definitely a positive thing. A common myth is that starting school later decreases the number of days and hours of the school year, but this is untrue. Starting after Labor Day saves money for schools because energy bills run 70% higher in August than in May. Also, starting school after Labor Day allows students who play baseball or other summer sports not to worry about conflicts with their schedule. Family is very important in this society, so starting school after Labor Day allows kids to spend the holiday with their family without worrying about school the next day. This is why school starting after Labor Day is definitely a respectable idea. By Nick Johannsen This year, AHHS started school on August 19th while others, like Sioux Falls schools, start school after Labor Day. This student believes that is a terrible idea for South Dakota schools. The problem with starting school so early is that the end of school will be delayed until June. I myself, being a teacher’s student, believe that causes an increased workload for teachers, who already have to work through summer. Students would also have to miss school for the first two football games of the year and the first few volleyball games. The environment of game day is energetic and hard to substitute. It is a day no student should miss out on. Because of these reasons, I personally believe no school should begin after Labor Day. Editorial By Gavin Doering Keandra Rhead: “Annoying Brianna Walth at the pool” My name is Gavin Doering, and I am the advocate for WWE. All I hear people say about WWE is how fake it is and how every match is predetermined. That’s correct, it is fake and the wrestlers are actors meant to portray an intense and violent match. WWE stands for World Wrestling ENTERTAINMENT. They are just trying to entertain the audience. If you are not entertained by someone doing a 360 backflip off the top rope then you are just not my kind of person. As for the comments of it being fake, nothing on TV is real. Just like all the other shows on TV, there are storylines between characters and conflict. The difference is they settle their conflicts in the ring. If you think WWE is stupid, watch a full episode and see what you think then. Perhaps you could enjoy the monologue between characters and the energy in the crowd. Student Life 4 5 Summer Movie Review: Jurassic World By Nick Johanson The fourth installment of the Universal Studios blockbuster series, Jurassic World is an action packed, adventure filled ride that kept audiences begging for more. Led by the wonderful acting of Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, the antagonists deal with rogue dinosaurs that take over the amusement park. Like any movie of this genre, the conflict is eventually resolved. Jurassic World made so many audiences come back for more that it shattered box office records and broke records set by Titanic and The Avengers. It rivaled such movies as the second Avengers and Ant Man. Don’t worry fans, Pratt has signed on to do three more Jurassic movies. The Bear Necessities: The New Crew By Grant Johnson The Bear Necessities Cast doesn’t rebuild this season, it reloads. The new cast will bring back old members but put them in new roles and also bring in new faces. With brand new ideas and never before seen segments, this season will be a hit. Seniors Grant Johnson, Mitchell Johnson, Nick Johannsen, and Zach Ronning will all be the co-hosts and the primary detectives for the show. Junior Gavin Doering will continue with the senior moment. Newcomers, Logan McConnell and Samuel L. Jensen, will be sure to bring an interesting new twist to the show. Head camer- aman, Marshall Christensen, will capture all of the action. “I’m looking forward to many laughs and hilarious moments on the Bear Necessities this season.” Said Senior, Zachary Ronning. The Bear Necessities Crew will have to create new exciting themes and ideas with the graduation of their creators, Ashton Liston, Colin Walth, and Chris Klemme. These three left the show in very capable hands though, and the show will definitely be a giant success. Zachary Ronning posing for the latest episode of the “The Bear Necessities?
