INTRODUCTION
When the sensitivity of the footscan® system is becoming insufficient, the Pressure Sensitive Layer
(PSL) of the footscan® plate is at the end of its lifespan and needs to be replaced. It is advised to
replace the Pressure Sensitive Layer (PSL) of the footscan® plate every 12 months in order to keep your
footscan® pressure plate in optimal condition.
This guide will assist you to perform a replacement of the Pressure Sensitive Layer for a footscan®
USB2 system. Please follow the instructions step by step.

UNPACKING
Before replacing the Pressure Sensitive Layer (PSL), take a moment to ensure you received all the
components. The PSL and the sticker with mesh are packed in a PE – bag within the flat packaging.
Open the PE – bag only at the time of application.

2. Removing the existing PSL. Slowly peel off the sticker, starting in one corner (a). Remove the PSL
from the PCB (b), discard sticker and PSL. Remove the pieces of double – faced adhesive tape
holding the PSL in place (c). Make sure no glue residue from the sticker or double – faced adhesive
tape is left on the PCB (d); glue residue can be removed with a non aggressive cleaning agent such
as white gas.

3. Cleaning the PCB. The PSL contact area of the PCB has to be free from particles and
contamination before the new PSL can be placed. Use a soft, non abrasive dry towel or tissue paper
to clean the PCB. Persistent contamination can be cleaned with a non aggressive cleaning agent
such as white gas.

4. Unpacking the PSL replacement kit. The PSL and sticker with mesh are packed in a PE – bag.
Open the PE – bag only at the time of application. Do not fold or crease the PSL or sticker with
mesh, avoid excess handling.
5. Verify the serial number. On the new PSL you will find the serial number of the footscan® plate for
which it was ordered. Make sure the serial number on the PSL matches the serial number of your
footscan® plate. The serial number of the footscan® plate is located on the identification label on the
bottom of the footscan® plate. DO NOT use the PSL if the serial numbers do not match!
Page 8
6. Placing the double – faced adhesive tape. Apply the supplied pieces of double – faced adhesive
tape on the four corners as depicted, close to but NOT covering the PSL contacts on the PCB. Do
not yet remove the protective strip from the top of the double – faced adhesive tape.
7. Course positioning of the new PSL. Position the PSL on the PCB, the alignment markers in the
corners facing up and the cable position marker (C) aligned with the cable of the plate.
Page 9
8. Aligning the new PSL. Because of the sensor by sensor calibration, the alignment of the new PSL
is critical to the performance of the system; please follow the steps exactly as described.
The four alignment markers on the corners of the PSL have to be aligned at equal distances from the
edges of the PCB (not the housing). Use the alignment tool to verify the position. Align the dashed
lines on the alignment tool with the edges of the PCB; align the inside edges of the alignment
markers on the PSL with the 90° angle of the alignment tool. Repeat until all corners are aligned at
equal distances from the edges of the PCB.
Verify that the PSL has no creases and no air is trapped underneath; make sure the PSL does not
shift from this position, otherwise repeat the procedure.
Page 10
9. Fixing the new PSL to the PCB. Hold the PSL firmly in place. Remove in one corner the protective
strip from the top of the double – faced adhesive tape. Fix the corner of the PSL to the PCB. Repeat
for the other corners.
10. Verify the final position of the new PSL. Verify the final position of the PSL with the alignment tool,
as described in the alignment step. When the position is incorrect, carefully remove the PSL and
repeat the alignment step.
11. Preparing the new sticker. Slowly remove the liner frame from the adhesive sheet on the sticker.
Make sure the mesh sheet has no folds or creases and adheres evenly to the sticker.
Page 11
12. Placing the new sticker. Position the new sticker with the RSscan logo at the top left corner while
the cable connection is located at the bottom right corner. Align and attach the sticker at the left side
of the PCB and gradually attach the rest of the sticker while applying slight pressure to ensure no air
is trapped underneath. Once the sticker is placed, verify the alignment of the sticker, rub firmly
around the edges of the sticker. Inspect the plate and sticker to ensure the edges of the sticker are
adhering firmly to the PCB.

13. Software installation. Every PSL has its unique calibration file. The PSL replacement kit contains a
footscan® software CD and a footscan® Calibration File Installer CD which contains the calibration
file unique to this PSL. Both MUST be installed before the footscan® system can be used with
the new PSL. Refer to the installation guide bundled in the PSL replacement kit for further
instructions.
