Ryan Steensland, a four-handicapper
from Hazeltine, fired a final round twounder 69 to lead his team to the Tapemark championship. It was the second
straight team title for Steensland, an unprecedented event in tournament history.
Professional Aaron McClay’s (Sundance
GC) four-man team took the two best ball
event with ease, cruising to a 63-under
total on the strength of an impressive
(-26) final round on Sunday.
The team’s “C” amateur Phil Johnson (Southview CC) came into the event
battling a severely injured left hand. The
31-handicapper wore a thumb brace while
fashioning three consistent rounds (100102-99). Johnson piled up nine-under
alone on Sunday when he parred five of
eleven holes in one stretch; meanwhile
teammate Steensland birdied two holes
and eagled another. When the dust
settled on the front nine, the team’s red
hot start vaulted them from second place

Professional Ryan Helminen (SentryWorld, WI) and his team were the last
group on Sunday at the Tapemark Charity Pro-Am, and the outcome was still in
doubt as he approached the tee on the
9th hole, his last of the tournament. In
his first Tapemark Charity Pro-Am, Helminen held a 2-stroke lead over three pros
already in the clubhouse, Mario Tiziani,
Joe O’Brien, and David Morgan. The 9th
hole played only 276 yards on Sunday, as
the course was set up to encourage the
field to take a shot at reaching the green
on their tee shots. Helminen played it
safe by choosing a 7-iron, but pulled the
shot into the woods on the left. His next
shot barely emerged from the trees, and
he now faced a much more dicey situation. He chipped onto the green, but was
well above the hole and faced a difficult
two-putt to avoid a four-way playoff. But
he gathered himself, rolled a beautiful
putt down the steep slope of the 9th
green, tapped in for a bogey five, and

The 39th annual Tapemark
Charity Pro-Am is being dedicated
in memory of the daughter of
Bob and Sandy Klas, Frances Klas
Johnson, who passed away not
long after last year’s tournament.
In a fairer world, the previous
tournaments would have been
dedicated to her as well, since
unknown to many, Frances has
been the inspiration for the
Pro-Am since its inception.
Frances was born in 1951, at a
time when there were no services
for people with special needs and
long before anyone had conceived
of using a golf tournament as a
way to raise money for charity.
Compared to how we support
people with developmental needs
today, 59 years ago could be considered the Dark Ages.
Frances was educated at
schools that were described as
serving the “mentally retarded.”
Even more disturbing than that
term, however, was the deplorable
physical condition of many of the
facilities. In the late fifties, Frances
attended the aged Crowley School,
located on St. Paul’s West Side,
before it was torn down due to its

Saturday. During the after on Saturday,
another heavy rain delayed play almost
an hour. The afternoon pros and teams
returned to the course and played in
a light drizzle for most of the rest of
Saturday. But Sunday saw no delays of
any kind, and the field responded with
some of the most exciting golf in the
Tapemark’s long history.
Past Tapemark Champion Mike
Barge won the Frank Freer Senior
Championship at -4, edging Joe Stansberry by a single stroke.
This year’s Tapemark professional
field was one of the strongest ever, and
featured 7 past Tapemark Champions
including Jeff Sorenson, John Carlson,
Don Berry, Mike Barge, Mike Zinni, Chris
Winkel, and Craig Brischke.

secured his first Tapemark Charity ProAm Championship in his initial Tapemark appearance. Helminen’s victory
earned him the Klas-Cody Trophy, a
$5,400 check, and a lifetime exemption
into the Tapemark. Morgan (Rochester G&CC), O’Brien (Minneapolis GC),
and Tiziani (Windsong Farm) finished
tied for 2nd at -8, and Jeff Sorenson
(Columbia GC), last year’s Tapemark
champion, was alone in 5th place at -5.
The weather played a big factor
in the first two days of competition,
as a more than three hour rain delay
early Friday morning pushed back play,
forcing two shotgun starts to complete
the play on Friday. Play ended late
on Friday, and then normal morning
and afternoon tee times resumed on

(-37 after 36 holes) to first (after -15 on
the first nine holes). “B” amateur Greg
Skarda (a 14 from Southview CC) was a
steady contributor (82-86-85) throughout the rainy weekend.
Professional Jordan Ensrud’s
(Links at Northfork) team had the lead
after 36 (at -39) and came in second
(nine back at -54). Matt Klein (Mississippi Dunes), Chris Bienash (Southview
CC) and Ed Passe (Coffee Mill) comprised the team. Ensrud had a 66 on
Saturday, then followed with a 69 on
Sunday. Bienash (78-80-85) was the
big gun on the scoreboard, piling up
twenty four points in the tournament.
Pro Brett Snyder (Troy Burne) led a furious Sunday charge (he shot 67-67 over
the tourney’s final 36 holes) to lead his
team to the bronze medals (-50). David
Grove (North Oaks), James LeRoy
(Southview CC) and Andy Schouweiler
(Tapemark Golf Club) were his teammates; 22-handicapper Schouweiler
had a pair of 92’s that produced big
numbers for his team.
The Low Gross Amateur was Joel
B. Johnson of Tanner’s Brook. And it
wasn’t even close. Johnson was the
model of consistency on the scoreboard in the soggy conditions, firing
rounds of 72-73-69. His hole-by-hole
was a roller coaster ride. Johnson had
eleven bogies and a double bogey during the tourney, but countered those
holes with twelve birdies (to finish at
one-over for 54 holes). Finishing well
back at nine over par were a trio that
included: Billy Barnhart (Southview CC,
the 2009 Low Amateur), Eric Hayne
(White Bear Yacht Club) and Michael
Callahan (Hastings CC).

Honoring Grant Steensland
The Tapemark Pro-Am honors the life and memory of Grant
Steensland, son of longtime Tapemark amateur player Ryan
Steensland. Grant died on June 6, 2010 at the age of 7,
after battling a rare form of brain cancer. Grant was an avid
golfer, hoopster, swimmer, biker, gardener, baker, math wiz,
fisherman, reader, shopper and adventurer. We were proud
to honor Grant by drawing his name as the first amateur
at the Tapemark Drawing Banquet on June 9th, and announcing that as he was unable to play, “his father Ryan
would take his place”. We send our heartfelt condolences
to his sister Samantha, his brother Blake, and his mother
and father, Pamela and Ryan. Memorial gifts can be sent to

arly on Friday morning at the 39th
Annual Tapemark Charity Pro-Am,
the situation looked bleak. The
rain was falling, play was delayed,
and it looked like the golf on Friday, if
not the whole weekend, was in jeopardy.
The forecast for Saturday was equally
bad, and already the tournament staff
was discussing contingency plans that
included less than 54 holes of golf. But
a break in the weather finally showed,
and at that point, three of the most
important people in the Tapemark family stepped in, the leadership staff at
Southview Country Club; Phil Anderson (Head Golf Professional), Jeramie
Gossman (Grounds Superintendent),
and Mark McCahey (General Manager).
Along with Tournament Staff, these
three men devised and executed an
elaborate “Double Shotgun” plan that
not only saved the golf on Friday, but
set the table for all 54 holes of golf to
be played during the weekend.
We are honored to work with Mark,
Phil, and Jeramie, not only for their professional skill, but for their commitment
to the success of the Tapemark and
what it means to the people and families we support. They work year-round
with us to ensure that the Tapemark
weekend is a success, and we thank
them and their staff for everything they
do. This year, Mark completed his 25th
Tapemark as GM at Southview, Phil his
3rd as Head Pro, and Jeramie his 2nd
as Superintendent. Congratulations and

Arc Greater Twin Cities Wins $3,000 in Tapemark Charity Challenge

because two of the people appeared
here last year. The 2010 Tapemark Charity Challenge was won by Team 6 , featuring professional Aaron McClay and
his amateur teammates Greg Skarda,
Philip Johnson, and Ryan Steensland.
They were playing on behalf of Arc
Greater Twin Cities, and their first place
finish gave them the chance to present
Arc executive Marianne Reich a check
for $3,000. Steensland’s team won in
2009 as well when they were playing on
behalf of Arc Greater Twin Cities.
So in two consecutive years,
Steensland has been able to hand off a
big check to Reich.
The Charity Challenge features
all 62 Tapemark teams competing on
behalf of one of our five benefiting
charities, with prize money coming
from a separate pool of $10,000. In
second place this year, Team 48 (Jordan
Ensrud, Matt Klein, Chris Bienash, Ed
Passe) won $1,500 for Children’s Home
Society and Family Services, and the
third place Team 43 (Brent Snyder, David Grove, Jim Leroy, Andy Schouweiler)
won another $1,000 for CHSFS.

A Conversation with returning
champion Jeff Sorenson
J
eff Sorenson, the 2009 Tapemark
Champion, returned to Southview
to defend his title this year. Last
year’s Tapemark Pro Am championship was one of eleven different golf
tournaments that Jeff Sorenson won
in 2009. Minnesota PGA Player of the
Year in both 2008 and 2009, Sorenson’s game turned around in 2006 and
he hasn’t looked back since.
“Recently, I had really good control
of my ball flight,” he recalls. “I’ve always
had the distance, but the last couple
years I have been able to keep it in play
consistently. My putting has improved,
I’ve been able to contend consistently.”
Sorenson (Columbia GC, Minneapolis) shot 67-66-64 at Southview Country
Club last June in winning the Tapemark,
edging fellow pro Adam Wynia (Prairie Green) by one shot. David Morgan
(Tonto Verde, Arizona) and David Tentis
(Troy Burne) were three shots behind.
“My approach was pretty simple,”
explains Sorenson. “I just stayed really
aggressive at Southview all three days.
The course played short, especially
when I was hitting it long. I fired at the
pins, I was looking for birdies and not
for comfortable pars.”
Southview has been kind to the
long-hitting Sorenson. After shooting
72-71-75 in his 2004 Tapemark debut,
he has averaged 68.4 in his last fifteen
competitive rounds at the West St. Paul
track. He was in the championship mix
late Sunday afternoon in both 2006
and 2008, but fell short both years.
“I didn’t win any big tournaments
after the Tapemark in 2009,” the 31year old Sorenson added, “but I stayed
around the lead at the Minnesota State
Open (where he finished tenth), at the
North Dakota Open (eighth) and the
Minnesota PGA (fifth). It was a great
year. The biggest downer in 2009 was
at Qualifying School (in Port St. Lucie,
Florida in October).

made fourteen bogies and a triple. I was
sloppy, I missed the cut, that was disappointing.”
A Champlin Park high school
graduate, Sorenson was a baseball
player until his senior year there. “They
wouldn’t let me play both sports at
once, so I chose golf,” he remembers. “I
went to state that year, got really interested in the game and started hanging
around Edinburgh and working on my
game with (then head pro)
Craig Waryan.
I went to the University of Minnesota on an Evans (caddie) Scholarship,
then started the PGA program. I worked
at Edinburgh with Waryan and (professional) Don Berry, then I got the head
job at Columbia (in northeastern Minneapolis) back in 2004.”

Honored at 2010 Banquet
T
he Tapemark Charity Pro-Am is
understandably proud of its rich
history, which dates back to 1972.
As most everyone already knows,
over its many years the Pro-Am has
made a positive impact on the charities
it supports as well as the Minnesota golf
scene. What many people don’t know,
however, are some of the people who
have helped make the Pro-Am the
successful event that it’s become.

Frank Winsor
Long-time amateur competitor and
Southview Country Club member Frank
Winsor was honored at the 39th annual
Tapemark Charity Pro-Am Golf Tournament Saturday night dinner. Winsor
played in the inaugural Tapemark event
back in 1972, then participated in every
pro-am until 2004 (33 in a row). Ever
since then, Frank has remained an
active supporter of the tournament’s
cause; he’s even been spotted cartcaddying for his son Jim at recent
Tapemark events. While Frank’s health
has kept him off the golf course lately,
his passion for the game has remained
undeterred.
Winsor’s love affair with the game
of golf began at an early age. To say
that Frank took the game serious would
be an understatement. There were
several occasions when Frank took a
morning flight to Chicago to get a golf
lesson, then would be back in the office
by noon. “Shagging balls for dad was
never a problem when he was hitting it
well,” recalls son Jim. “It was a different
story when he was hitting it sideways.”
“Frank just hated hitting the ball
right,” recalls Jim. “It got to a point
where if he’d hit a fade, he would stop
in the fairway and put a five-dollar bill
on the ground as a penalty. Needless
to say, the tee time behind dad’s was a
highly-coveted spot.”
Golf has always been a family priority for Frank. The Winsors have planned
numerous family vacations and getaways over the years…and most them
included early morning tee times in
places like Singing Hills, San Diego and
Lahinch in County Clare, Ireland.
And thirty six holes was never out
of the question. The highly-competitive
KWAC matches at Southview were regular events for Frank as well: Bob Klas &
Winsor versus Bill Akins & Pat Cody.
Many golfers start looking for the
beverage cart once they’ve hit the back
nine. Winsor was never concerned when
the cart girl failed to appear, since he
generally had pre-made those special
beverage arrangements for himself.
My brother Pat served as Frank’s
regular Saturday morning Southview
caddy back in the sixties. Pat always
noticed that somehow, Winsor’s golf
bag weighed less and less as the round
progressed.
Frank has always been a caretaker
of the game, a true gentleman who
constantly carries the genuine spirit of
golf sportsmanship. His passion for the
game is contagious: not only does Winsor truly relish the golf experience, but
wants others to get the same pleasure
and enjoyment.
Just to the left of the eleventh
green at Southview CC stands a memorial to Frank’s love for the game. A
carved wooden statue of Winsor watches over the sand trap that has bedeviled
Tapemark tournament players for almost four decades. This lasting tribute
calls us all to remember what Winsor
has always known: at its essence, golf is
simply a game to be enjoyed.
Marianne Reich
Most of the public is aware of the golf
side of the Pro-Am, but the untold story
and many of the unsung heroes are the
volunteers that donate their time to
make the tournament a success. There
are dozens of people who volunteer,
but few have contributed as much of
their time and energy to the event as
Marianne Reich, Chief Program Officer
for Arc Greater Twin Cities.
Yes, it’s true that her organization is one of the Pro-Am’s benefiting
agencies, but what Marianne does goes
well beyond the call of duty. For 20

years, she has consistently shown up
to work daylong shifts all three days
of the event. She has worked at the
information table, organized the sale of
raffle tickets, sold merchandise, helped
spread the mission of the work that
the Arcs do in the community and, well,
pretty much anything else that allows
the tournament to run smoothly.
But after all these many years,
wouldn’t she really want to try doing
something else the second weekend in
June? Marianne admits that heading off
instead to her cabin is tempting, but she
genuinely enjoys being at the Tapemark
and, “Seeing so many people getting
engaged in doing good things for the
community.”
Marianne is also quick to point out
that, in addition to the financial support
that it provides to the benefiting agencies, the tournament has helped raise
public awareness for the Arc mission.
“It helps people realize that what happens at the Pro-Am is more than just
a weekend of golf. Hopefully, it causes
people to see the many contributions
that people with disabilities make in our
communities. It might also make them
consider the skills and benefits they
bring to their businesses as employees.”
So how much longer will Marianne
continue to commit three full days
every year to the Pro-Am? “I can’t imagine what I’d do if I weren’t at the tournament,” she says, obviously forgetting
about the lake cabin that sits vacant
without her. “It’s really fun. Every year
something terrific happens. I’ll show up
as long as I can, or until someone tells
me they don’t want me anymore.”
The TapeMark Charity Pro-Am has long
been an attraction for serious golfers,
but there aren’t many people who’ve
signed up to play without really ever
having played the game before. One exception – possibly the only one – is John
Feddema, who this year will be playing
in his 22nd tournament.
As John explains, “I knew it was
for a good charity, and I’d attended the
event a number of times and actually
walked around and watched some of the
competition. But I’d really never played
the game. So in early 1989 I signed up
to attend the Ben Sutton Golf School in
Tampa, Florida, just so that I could play
in the Pro-Am, which I did just a few
weeks later. I believe I had the highest

handicap (36) of anybody in the tournament. (Long-time friend) Tom Otteson
walked around with me for a few holes
and tried to give me advice on what
club to hit for certain shots. But he kept
telling me what club he’d hit, rather
than what would work for somebody
like me. After about three holes he
couldn’t take it anymore and abandoned
me. But our team made the cut!”
Finally, two years ago John was
part of his self-described “Dream
Team,” somewhat sarcastically so
dubbed because it included the previously mentioned Tom Otteson, who,
over the years, has been both John’s
golfing companion and nemesis. (For

of Feddema’s basement, where John
displays a framed hanging that features

organizations continue to have their budgets
cut. This is something I can do to help.”

Anderson works incredibly hard
to make sure each Tapemark
Charity Pro-Am is a huge success. But
that dedication doesn’t end when the
tournament finishes. This winter Anderson continued a tradition he began the
minute he got his head pro job.
At the close of the golf season, Anderson takes all his remaining clothing
stock from his pro shop and donates it
to Arc’s Value Village. In 2009, that donation amounted to $6,170 of brand new
golf apparel. In the last two years, Anderson has donated more than $15,400
worth of clothing to Arc’s Value Village
Thrift Stores & Donation Centers. Pam
Carlson, director of community relations, Arc Greater Twin Cities, lauded
Anderson for his contribution. “This
is easily one of the biggest individual
donations of clothing we receive each
year, and it’s all new, so it’s in great condition.”
“I believe that people with disabilities deserve a good quality of life,”
Anderson said while making his donation at the new Arc Value Village store
on the east side of St Paul. “I know how
important the Tapemark charities are
to them, and that these organizations
continue to have their budgets cut.
This is something I can do to help.” To
anyone who knows Phil, his generosity
and commitment are not surprising.
Philip Callen, president of the Tapemark
Charity Pro-Am sees this first-hand. “We
know from working closely with him
that Phil spends a great deal of time
in the off-season thinking up ways to
make the Tapemark a better golf event
and a better fundraiser.” Apparently,
it’s a full-time job.

Arc Helps Make a Dream
Come True – 10 Years Early!
When self-advocate Mona Laurent
moved out of her family home, her 20year goal was to live independently in
an apartment of her own. Last October,
with help from Arc Greater Twin Cities,
she met that goal – 10 years ahead of
schedule.
Like many people with disabilities,
Mona lived in a group home before this
opportunity arose. But a group home
wasn’t the best fit.
“We expect a lot from anyone, let
alone someone with a disability, to think
we can put them together in a group
home and everything will mesh,” said
Sue Laurent, Mona’s sister. “There are
so many different disabilities and so
many different personalities. It doesn’t
always work.”
When issues came to a head, Mona
had to leave the group home. Her sister
and co-guardian Marianne Laurent said,
“We didn’t want to move Mona just for
the sake of moving her. We wanted to
do what was right. We looked at a lot of
options, but finding appropriate placement for her was really frustrating.”
She continued, “We were going
through old paperwork, and I saw Arc’s
name. A friend of mine has gotten a lot
of help from Arc, and she said, you

The Arc of Minnesota
An advocate since
the 1970s
David Bender has significant disabilities — Down syndrome and autism — but
because of the services he receives,
he has a happy and healthy life. He
volunteers in his St. Paul neighborhood, walks the dog for the family next
door, participates in activities at the
local community center, and is gaining
skills so he can volunteer at programs
like Feed My Starving Children and The
Humane Society.
Jean and Paul Bender, David’s
parents, weren’t able to find a program
like this in the existing service system.
Thanks to an innovative service option
promoted by The Arc of Minnesota,
they were able to create a tailor-made
program for David – at a cost that is
$20,000 less than other disability
services.
Like David, Kenny Moore also has
a better life. Kenny has developmental
disabilities, and for several years, he
was living in a foster care home. He
didn’t need all the supervision from
that home and was anxious to have a
place of his own. Through a program
called Housing Access Services, Kenny
has found his own apartment in Apple
Valley, a bus ride or bike ride away from
his job at Culver’s. He will also save the
state money that would be spent in the
more expensive foster care setting.
Erich Hoffmann is enjoying life,
too, in his seventh grade class at Apple
Valley middle school. He is an engaging teenager who makes friends with
whomever he meets and just happens
to have developmental disabilities. He
loves Spanish class and he loves making
things in his Family Consumer Science
class that he would never eat at home.
He plays percussion in the seventh
grade band and soon will receive his
second degree Junior Black Belt in
Karate.
Connecting individuals and
families with the resources
and information they need.
Erich’s parents, Gail and Doug, have
included Erich as much as possible in
school. They have received support
from a program that helps get Erich to
his many medical and therapy appointments, as well as to numerous activities
that help him function like a typical
child. This program also provides equipment and learning devices to help his
everyday learning, increase his fine motor skills, and make his daily life easier.
These successes haven’t happened
by accident. David, Kenny, and Erich are
benefiting from services for which The
Arc of Minnesota has advocated since
the 1970s. The Arc of Minnesota and its
12 local affiliated chapters have been
leaders in working for this system and
connecting individuals and families with
the resources and information
they need.
It is for people like David, Kenny,
and Erich that The Arc of Minnesota
exists. We are also there for others who
are struggling to get the services they
need for a more independent life or a
more normal family life.
For example, because of recent
state budget cuts, Kathy Sanders is
getting half of the hours of help she
was receiving just a few months ago
in her Andover home. The staff helped
her manage the significant behavior
challenges her daughter Jenny poses
— challenges that require 24-hour monitoring. Kathy is a reminder that our
work is not done and must continue.

Dakota Communities
Cooking and Friendship are
the Perfect Ingredients
Nearly four decades ago, Walt and Mary
Jo Roberts were looking for a partner
to help them raise their son John who
has multiple and severe disabilities.
Fortunately for their family, Dakota’s
Children — now Dakota Communities —
was just building a home in St. Paul and
seven-year-old John became one of the
new residents.
From this one home for 48
children, Dakota Communities has
grown to include 32 adult group homes
in neighborhood settings across the
Twin Cities Metro. John now lives at a
home with three other men in Eagan,
where he is part of the community and
receives quality care 24/7 from
staff on-site.
John enjoys his small group home
setting and his life is full. The Roberts
Family helped build a walking path in
the very large backyard at his house
because John loves to walk — even if
it’s raining or snowing. Mary Jo, John’s
mom, served previously on the Dakota
Communities board and currently on
the Human Rights Committee.
Walt and Mary Jo and their other
five grown children are all supportive
of and grateful for Dakota Communities. “There’s wonderful leadership and
vision there. They make improvements
all the time.”
Dakota Communities is currently
expanding a number of healthy initiatives for people they support through a
program it calls Be Connected, Be Well.
New menus focus on fresh foods and
meals prepared from scratch. Therapeutic gardening is a summer program
providing not only produce, but also
a creative outlet with flowers. Teams
from the group homes call themselves
Garden Warriors and care for gardens
at the State Fair grounds as volunteers.
Pet therapy has been introduced.
“From a parent’s perspective, the support
John receives is invaluable. It’s priceless,”
says Roberts.
Playing in the Tapemark tournament carries special significance for
this close-knit family. John’s brother
Ted began playing three years ago following his dad who started eight years
earlier. “It is run so well; you feel like
you are on the tour. And we are playing
to support an organization our family
believes in,” says Walt.

Otteson on the golf course. Why does
John have them displayed there? That
one’s easy: Just to bug Otteson if Tom
ever comes over to John’s house!)
The problem, of course, with having
a longtime golfing foe as a teammate is
that it’s not always easy to root for a
guy that you’ve grown accustomed to
trying to beat over the years. When
asked whether he spent most of the
tournament pulling for or against
Otteson, Feddema had to admit to having
experienced two full days of schadenfreude, which is a German word that
means “experiencing glee at another
person’s misery.” Further compounding
the team’s problems, however, was that
Otteson was almost certainly hoping to
derive glee from John’s golfing misery.
Bottom line: the Dream Team missed the

dilapidated condition. Students were
taught on the third floor, which posed
significant challenges for the physically
handicapped. But it was a major victory
to have any place to educate a child
with special needs at that time.
Over the years, Frances would go
on to other schools, including St. Coletta
School in Jefferson, Wisconsin at the
age of 14. That was a long way from
home for someone that young and innocent, but good school options were few
and literally far between.
In time, Frances would return to
Minnesota and work for over 25 years
at Regina Hospital in Hastings, where
she often sported a button that read, “I
am a U.S. Taxpayer,” which she was! She
also married, traveled and lived a life as
full and meaningful as anyone’s.
Now is the
time for a fiscal
check-up
cut, resulting in untold glee on the part
of the other 59 teams in the tourney.
No one has won more Pro-Am raffle
prizes over the years than John, and
for a very good reason: he buys more
tickets than anyone else. But he doesn’t
buy them with the hope of winning, nor
does he play in the tournament because
he wants or needs another pair of golf
socks. His motivation is simple: he wants
to support the Pro-Am because he
believes in what it stands for. “It’s a
fabulous, well-run tournament,” John
says. “But most importantly, it’s a great
charity. It’s something I’ve looked
forward to every year.”
For 22 years, the Pro-Am has benefited from John’s faithful and generous
support. For all that he has done, John
Feddema was formally recognized at
this year’s Saturday Night Dinner for his
long-standing commitment to the success of the Tapemark Charity Pro-Am.
Frances entered the hospital on
June 25 last year, and died of pneumonia two days later. But her legacy
lives on; certainly in this year’s Pro-Am
where Bob and Sandy Klas, along with
countless other volunteers, golfers and
supporters from the community, will
join to raise critically needed funds for
others with developmental and learning disabilities. It lives on as well for all
those who no longer must live their lives
alone in the shadows, but may instead
now walk in the bright sunshine with
all of us.
On behalf of all those with special
needs, including both those who are
with us today and the many others that
are not yet born, we say thanks to the
person who has served as the inspiration for the Pro-Am and made the world
a better place for having been in it.

Special Olympian Heidi Magnusson
knows that athletes must learn to
respond in clutch situations with
agility and performance. Magnusson
did just that, but this time it was from
the speaker’s podium at the 2010
Tapemark Charity Pro-Am golf dinner.
At 25, Magnusson has already
achieved much. Four academic letters
in high school, sports victories in hockey, soccer and softball, and, perhaps
more importantly, she goes home tired
from her day job at ProAct, where she
works hard and smiles frequently.
Magnusson told her story to a
crowd of nearly 300 event supporters
on June 12 at the major golf event, held
at Southview Country Club in West. St.
Paul. “I swim, run in track and field,
play softball and go bowling,” said the
17-year Special Olympics athlete. “I
was lucky enough to go to the national
games on the Minnesota Ladies
Aquatics Team … and even won gold
and silver medals.”
“She was really remarkable, and
gave one of the most composed and
focused speeches I’ve ever heard,” said
Phil Callen, who serves as president
of the Pro-Am event. Attendees got
a brief glimpse at the life Magnusson
leads, what she values, along with her
accomplishments, and she thanked
Heidi Magnusson tells Tapemark Charity

Callen explained.
The Tapemark crowd was not the
first to hear from Magnusson, who has
opened many doors and opportunities
as a representative of the Special Olympics. She’s had dinner with Minnesota
Governor Tim Pawlenty and has spoken
with Congressman John Kline about the
organization.
Not one to turn away a challenge,
Magnusson has acted in community
theatre productions, and attends a
theatre class at ProAct in Eagan, joining
her coworkers with disabilities.
“Many people think that having Down
Syndrome holds me back, but I don’t
think it keeps me from doing anything I
really want to do,” said Magnusson. “I
think I have a very full and exciting life.”
Magnusson credits ProAct for
helping her to find work in the community, and providing new job skills that
employers can use. She worked at a
restaurant for a number of years and
really enjoyed helping customers.
Steve Ditschler, president and CEO
of ProAct, said Magnusson serves as a
wonderful example of what people with
disabilities can achieve. “There are
so many options today for people,
and the quality of life is far greater
than in the past. We are so proud of
Heidi and we’re grateful that we’ve
been able to play a role in her success.”
ProAct serves the needs of people
with disabilities through its facilities in
Eagan, Red Wing, Zumbrota and River
Falls, Wisconsin.
ProAct
ProAct, Inc. has been assisting people
with disabilities for 40 years, and
offers numerous programs to maximize
each person’s potential. From life
skills classes to vocational and employment programs, the organization is
experienced in identifying and working
with a person’s needs, strengths and
aspirations, helping individuals to lead
productive lives.
Working from its headquarters in
Eagan, from a substantial facility in Red
Wing and through satellite programs
in western Wisconsin and Zumbrota,
ProAct serves people with disabilities
in the Twin Cities metro, southern
Minnesota and western Wisconsin.
Transportation is provided to its facilities and to community work settings.
In helping people with brain
injuries, ProAct’s Adult Day Services
program is geared toward improving
a person’s overall well being, through
classes and therapeutic recreation.
In preparing for employment, clients
receive pre-vocational services, develop
good work habits and learn effective
interpersonal and problem solving skills.
People with disabilities get support in
their search for competitive employment to help ensure long term success.
Through coaching, the use of adaptive
technology and problem solving, ProAct
is the catalyst for satisfaction and pride
at work, and in successful daily living.

It took us awhile to find a stable place
to live, but once we did, we were able
to enroll Jacob in school for about two
months before the end of the
school year.”
Jacob’s mom, Marcia, added, “We
worried that Jacob had not spent
enough time in kindergarten and would
need to be held back.” They believed
that Jacob was not at the same level
socially and emotionally as his peers.
Meanwhile, Will and Marcia struggled
with their own disabilities, and felt
the school was not taking enough time
to discuss their concerns about
Jacob’s progress.
At Jacob’s previous school, his
individual education plan, or IEP, was
written to request that he attend
summer school so that he could catch
up with his classmates. However, the
IEP at his new school stated summer
school was unnecessary, which made
his parents more worried about their
son’s education.
“That’s why we started working
with Children’s Home Society & Family
Services,” Will said.
The Learning Disabilities
Assistance program at CHSFS supports
children like Jacob and their families as
they navigate learning issues relative
to dyslexia, attention-deficit disorder,
emotional or behavioral difficulties,
difficulties in auditory processing,
or information integration and
memory disabilities.
One out of every seven Americans
has some type of learning disability.
Finding sufficient support can help
lessen the fear a child and his parents
experience with the diagnosis of a
learning disability. Our goal is to
empower parents to obtain the help
they need for their child, navigate
the special education system and overcome the frustration associated with
a learning disability.
Tapemark Charity has been
supporting the Learning Disabilities
Assistance program at CHSFS for more
than twelve years. As a significant
funder through the annual Pro-Am and
Women’s Golf Event, as well as its
charity bingo hall and pull tab sites,
Tapemark Charity has been vital in
enabling CHSFS to provide services
children and their families struggling
with learning disabilities.
Generous contributions from
Tapemark Charity have allowed CHSFS
to cross-train ten staff people to help
identify potential learning disabilities
in clients, which may be the underlying cause of other issues in their lives.
Tapemark Charity’s financial support
provides every family living in our
service area the opportunity for learning disabilities assistance, regardless of
personal income.
During the past year, CHSFS has
served 64 families of kindergarten,
elementary and high school children
in Anoka, Chisago and Ramsey County.
Children and families served through
our Learning Disabilities Program
experience very positive results:
90% of parents are able to get
a more appropriate education
plan for their child.
88% say they can communicate
better with school.
87% report being able to help their
child do better in school.
By helping to identify and understand
the obstacles to success a child may be
experiencing, and giving parents the
tools to advocate on their child’s behalf
with the school, CHSFS is able to help
families unlock a child’s full potential.

school,” Will explained. Because of this
extra communication and support,
Jacob was enrolled in summer school
and made good progress toward
entering first grade.
“I believe that Jacob would have
been left behind to go through kindergarten all over again if we hadn’t been
able to work with the staff at CHSFS,”
Marcia said. “I am thankful that they
taught us how to communicate with the
school in a way that helped Jacob get
what he needs to succeed.”

The Tapemark Charity Pro-Am was founded in 1972 by Bob Klas Sr. and Pat Cody Sr.
to raise money for non-profit agencies serving people with developmental and learning disabilities. In their first year, they raised $9,000. Their specific goal in creating
the Tapemark Pro-Am included three important requirements they considered
essential: that the event be a competitive golf event, that it be repeatable, and that
the fundraising results from the tournament be commensurate with the effort to
carry out the event. In all 3 areas, Klas and Cody succeeded wildly. Since that first
tournament in 1972, the Tapemark Pro-Am has raised and donated more than
$6,254,000 to the agencies it supports. It has become one of the four major events
for the Minnesota Section of the PGA, and has been won by all the greatest
professional players in Minnesota golf history. And in 2011, we will celebrate our
40th Anniversary as one of the Midwest’s longest-running and most successful
charity golf events.
The Tapemark Pro-Am is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. It now includes
a Women’s Charity Golf Event held each fall at Southview Country Club.
The organization is also licensed to operate two charitable gaming facilities,
the West St. Paul Bingo Palace and a pulltab installation at Dunham’s Bar in
West St. Paul. These two operations have contributed greatly to the fundraising
success of the entire organization.
The Tapemark Charity Pro-Am makes charitable contributions in the form of
general operating grants to five organizations; Arc Greater Twin Cities, The Arc of
Minnesota, Dakota Communities, ProAct, and the Learning Disabilities Program of
Children’s Home Society & Family Services. At this time, we do not solicit or accept
grants from other organizations. We do, however, encourage everyone we know to
offer their generous support to the many worthy non-profits working hard on behalf
of people with developmental and learning disabilities.
