a centre of rapid development
Herning - a centre of rapid development The City of Herning, a nerve centre of development, education, culture, trade fairs and international sporting and music events, is situated in central Jutland. Apart from the main City of Herning and its 47,000 inhabitants, the municipality with a total of 86,700 people covers an area large enough to make it the third largest municipality in Denmark. The region is known for its sense of community cohesion supported by resourcefulness, entrepreneurship, the will to achieve results and deeply rooted traditions of cooperation between industry and commerce, cultural institutions, enthusiasts and the municipality. It is actually said that the region harbours a unique spirit - or the Herning DNA. Education, business and culture The Birk area serves as a formidable example of this community cohesion. Here, a unique education and university environment is found right next door to companies and internationally renowned art experiences. The area is home to AU-Herning, TEKO’s design and textile programmes, the art museum Heart and Carl-Henning Pedersen & Else Alfelts Museum, just to name a few. Ingvar Cronhammar’s enormous sculpture “Elia”, Herning’s unofficial landmark, is also found here. In recent years, Herning has been singled out in several surveys as the most business friendly municipality in Denmark. Herning, the event city Recently, Herning has really made its mark as an event city hosting world-class international sporting events and concerts. www.herning.dk The first exhibition hall opened in Herning in 1954. Today, this single hall has developed into MCH. With its exhibition halls, auditoriums, the stadium MCH Arena Herning and the multi-arena Jyske Bank BOXEN, MCH is able to cater for any need regarding meetings, trade fairs, championships and music. In pace with the development of MCH, the people of Herning and the surrounding area have geared themselves towards receiving the many visitors in terms of infrastructure, planning and service. Cooperation is key. Local businesses, cultural institutions and volunteers as well as the municipality of Herning and MCH contribute greatly to creating the best possible conditions for Herning, the event city. The sky is the limit The ambition is to make Herning a great place to call home, to work, educate oneself and do business - put briefly, to make Herning a great place to live. We also like having visitors - whether they come to shop, see a play, experience art, participate in conferences, meetings and trade fairs, go to concerts or participate in sporting events. We usually say that in “Herning, the sky is the limit”. www.visitherning.com Facts Herning city has a population of 47,000 people and the Herning Municipality has a total of 86,700 people. Herning Municipality is Denmark’s third largest in terms of area and number 12 according to population. Historically, Herning - and the entire Central Jutland – was influenced by the textile industry. Today Herning is the drive behind development in central and western Jutland with a wide range of educations and businesses. Sport and culture are very important in Herning and include among others, 42 sports facilities spread across the municipality, the special training facility Herning Football Exploratorium, elite classes in both sports and singing, the regional theater - Team Teatret, the venue Fermaten and the two international renown museums of modern art - HEART and CarlHenning Pedersen & Else Alfelts Museum. The Herning company - MCH – attracts each year about 900,000 visitors to the city in connection with trade fairs, exhibitions, theater, concerts and sporting events. Herning is nearby to most - from the North Sea, to Legoland, to Denmark’s second largest city, Aarhus, reachable by motorways, trains, or 20-45 minutes to respectively Karup and Billund Airport, if flying is preferred. City of championships There has always been a strong connection between Herning and sport. Ice hockey team Herning Blue Fox has won the Danish championship 16 times and the city is also home to the Olympic medalist in wrestling, Häkan Nyblom. Bicycle joys unfolded for years around the annual six-days race in track cycling, which took place from 1974-83 and again in 199598. But also on the country roads, there has been a trace of large profiles and performances. Most well-known is the eagle from Herning - Bjarne Riis – bicycling on the regions roads since childhood, which has helped to create cycling enthusiasm among several generations. There was a culmination of bicycle joys, when the whole region was pink for three days in May 2012, in which Herning, hosted the start stages of the legendary cycling race Giro d’Italia. Since their inception in 1999, the Football club FC Midtjylland has been among the top players of the Super League. The same holds true for the FCM women handball team. The event strategy Herning Municipality deliberately focused on being the home of international sporting events since 2007. The event strategy, which aims to bring development to the area and experiences for both residents and visitors, has borne fruit. Among other things, Herning has been a bit of a handball city. In addition to hosting a variety of national and international matches, the multi arena Jyske Bank BOXEN, was in 2010 framework for the European Championships in women’s handball and www.visitherning.com will be again for the World Cup in 2015. The European Championship in handball for men will be held in January 2014 and in 2019 the city will host the World Cup for men - an honor the city had back in 1978. The “H” in Herning could also stand for horse instead of handball. The World Cup for Iceland Horses was held for the first time in 2003. In 2014 and 2015 the Nordic Championship and the World Cup will be held again. Since 1979, the city also hosted one of the largest breeding events in Europe – the Danish Warmblood Stallion Grading, with over 50,000 guests attending the event over a period of a weekend. In August 2013, some of the world’s most skilled riders gathered in the city, for the triple Championships in jumping, dressage and para-dressage. Top sport and exercise The list of major sporting events in recent years also include the Championships in Badminton (2008), World Wrestling (2009), European Championship in U21 Soccer (2011) and the European Championship in Table Tennis (2012). Alone in 2013, the city hosted three European Championships - the triple Championships in Jumping, Dressage and Para-Dressage (August), the European Championship in Volleyball (September) and the European Swimming Championships (December). The locals’ love for sports, is not only expressed on the stands, in elite context, but also in the form of exercise and training. The municipality has 35 sports centers and 170 sports clubs. www.herning.dk Lots of exercise and options If you like to work out there are plenty of opportunities for exercise in and around Herning. You could, for example, take a run on Hjertestien - a 2.3 km long, illuminated route with soft turf – or, do as some of the local joggers do, and train cardio, by running up and down the artwork Elia’s giant steps. Besides of being a freely accessible area where you can work out with or without a ball, with or without club membership, Herning Football Exploratorium is a complete rethink of football training pitches. If you prefer, you can grab your bike, and take Alhedestien - the former railway that stretches all the way from Herning to Viborg, through river landscapes and marshes. You can also challenge your leg muscles on the roads through the heather covered Trehøje hills. Then there are both Herning Svømmehal (Herning Indoor pool) and DGI Vandkulturhuset (DGI Swim Centre), which also houses a gym and a wellness area. Right in front of DGI Huset Herning, there is a basketball court, where the only requirement is a ball and some teammates. Check visitherning.com for more exercise options and routes. Additional experiences If you have time to spare, while working in Herning, there are plenty of opportunities to experience after hour events. Maybe you fancy a concert at the venue Fermaten, or at the underground scenes Kontrast or Rockstjernen. Team Teatret offers throughout the year their own performances, lectures and touring shows for kids and adults alike. Additionally, MCH offers each year a series of concerts, shows, theater, sporting events and exhibitions both in the national and international league. Socle du Monde and Cobra Birk, a suburb just east of downtown Herning, is an outstanding area. It is comprised of some of the region’s higher education institutions for example TEKO, offering design educations and the university department AU Herning, as well as innovative companies and two art museums. HEART - Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, which is worth a visit to experience both the interior and the exterior. The museum contains an internationally recognized collection of Piero Manzoni’s works, such as “Jordens sokkel” - “Socle du Monde”, the 7,200 meter long line “Linea Lunga” and the modestly small but very famously canned “Merde d’ artiste”. The museum, build in 2009, was designed by the American architect Steven Holl. On the opposite side of the street is the Carl -Henning Pedersen & Else Alfelts Museum with its collection of Cobra art, whose colorful universe already begins on the museum’s exterior, which Carl-Henning Pedersen created with his imaginative stroke. www.visitherning.com But you do not need to go to a museum for an art experience in Birk. The whole area is characterized by art, among others, the Sculpture Park, the Geometric Gardens, the 1,000 m2 big ceramic frieze “The Play of Imagination around the Wheel of Life” and Hernings unofficial landmark, the 22 meter high sculpture Elia, created by artist Ingvar Cronhammar. Shopping and good food There are also good opportunities in Herning if you prefer shopping, partly in Herning Shopping Centre, with its 75 specialty shops, which is rated as one of the best shopping centers in Denmark and partly in Herning City, with a combination of shops, cafes, restaurants and summer season market square activities, which makes the city a cozy shopping experience. If you should have a need to go for an evening stroll, it may be a good idea to head over to Østergade in the city center, where a number of pubs, bars and restaurants are concentrated and where - especially on weekends – you will find live music and dance. What’s on right now Check out the calendar on www.kulturspot.dk, to find out what is happening, while you are in town. You can search for information about the area’s sights and sounds on www.visitherning.com, where you will also find links to venues, restaurants, museums and other activities. www.kulturspot.dk Facts Close to nearly everything. From Herning, it is not far to a very wide range of Danish experiences. Denmark’s second largest city, Aarhus, is a good hour’s drive to the east. The city is named European Capital of Culture in 2017 and comprises of, among others, the art museum Aros and a very lively university environment. In the opposite direction lies the North Sea, offering unpolished nature, endless possibilities for relaxation, outdoor activities and fresh air. Legoland is situated 45 minutes to the south and is one of the country’s greatest tourist attractions for families with children and other playful and curious visitors. Copenhagen also offers many adventure opportunities such as Tivoli or the Royal Theatre, and is reachable within 2-4 hours, depending on whether one is traveling by plane, car or train. food and beverage - great culinary experiences in Herning Restaurants A Hereford Beefstouw BOXEN Kaj Zartows Vej 7 • Herning +45 4172 3060 • www.a-h-b.dk Noa Café & Restaurant Østergade 15 • Herning +45 9712 2023 • www.noa-herning.dk A Hereford Beefstouw Lund Lundvej 16 • Herning +45 9712 3544 • www.a-h-b.dk Restaurant Piano Bar Østergade 25 • Herning +45 5091 9050 • www.pianoherning.dk Bone’s Bredgade 20 • Herning +45 9721 2200 • www.bones.dk Restaurant Fiasko Østergade 34 • Herning +45 9710 0310 • www.restaurantfiasko.dk Brasseriet Skolegade 4 • Herning +45 9722 2644 • www.brasseriet-herning.dk Restaurant Mad Donna Østergade 30 • Herning +45 9726 9089 • www.maddonna.dk Bryggeriet Torvet 3c• Herning +45 9626 0270 • www.bryggeriet.dk Restaurant Sankt Jørgen, Hotel Eyde Torvet 1 • Herning +45 9722 1800 • www.eyde.dk Café Regina & Restaurant Rex Fonnesbechsgade 20 • Herning +45 9721 1500 • www.scandichotels.dk Restaurant Teater Kælderen Østergade 37 • Herning +45 9926 9927 • www.mch.dk Charolais Kroen Fonnesbechsgade 19A • Herning +45 9721 3550 • www.charloaiskroen.dk Ristorante - Pizzeria Marco Polo Torvet 5B • Herning +45 9712 7003 • www.marco-polo.dk China House Østergade 13A • Herning +45 9722 2205 • www.chinahouse.dk Ristorante Ravello Østergade 29 • Herning +45 9712 1290 • www.ristoranteravello.dk Den Kinesiske Mur Østergade 50 • Herning +45 9721 6868 • www.denkinesiskemur.com San Marco Bredgade 12 • Herning +45 9721 7174 • www.rest-sanmarco.dk Djengis Khan Vestergade 2 • Herning +45 9721 4477 • www.djengis-khan.com Vores Café & Restaurant Fonnesbechsgade 18 • Herning +45 9718 8090 • www.vores.nu El Maestro Østergade 24 • Herning +45 9726 9970 • facebook: elmaestroherning Yutaka Sushi Bar Fonnesbechgade 9 • Herning +45 9712 7090 • www.yutaka.dk Hotel Vildbjerg Bredgade 1 • Vildbjerg +45 9713 1100 • www.hotel-vildbjerg.dk Østergaards Hotel Silkeborgvej 94 • Herning +45 9712 4555 • www.oestergaardshotel.dk Jensen’s Bøfhus - herningCentret Merkurvej 67 • Herning +45 9722 5272 • www.jensens.com/herning Restaurants in Herning www.visitherning.com Napoli Østergade 27 • Herning +45 9712 7570 • www.napoli-herning.dk Restaurants in Ikast www.visitikast-brande.com steak city The Herning cuisine offers a wide range of options and restaurants, inspired by both the Japanese and Chinese, the Italian and French and traditional Danish cuisine. Herning also offers, which are in several circumstances compared with the innovative settler culture from the United States, several restaurants in the U.S. steak tradition, where a man is a man and a steak is a steak. The best known restaurant is probably A Hereford Beefstouw, which was established in Lund, just outside Herning in 1971. Today the chain consists of 10 quality steakhouses in Denmark, Nuuk in Greenland, Gothenburg in Sweden and Adelaide in Australia, as well as the original restaurant in Lund and a restaurant in the multi arena Jyske Bank BOXEN. The chain also manage three breweries - including a former bank basement in Herning, where you can enjoy food and beverage in an old bank vault. Another known Danish restaurant chain - Bone’s has its origin in Herning, where you can still visit the original family restaurant in a former horse stable in the middle of the pedestrian zone. And now that we are referring to steak in specific environments, there is also Charolais Kroen, which is housed in a former Free Church at the railway station. Facts Two pools were built in Jyske Bank BOXEN – a competition pool and a warm-up pool. The two pools hold a total of 2.4 million litres of water, which comes from Jyske Bank BOXEN. With a flow of approximately 67 cubic metres per hour, it took a full day to fill the competition pool and 14 hours to fill the warm-up pool. The water must maintain a constant temperature of 26°C. It takes respectively 43 and 33 hours to warm up the water to the requested temperature, and respectively 15 and 10 hours to change the water to limpid swimming-pool water. Regular electronic and manual checks are performed to ensure that the water has the proper pH value. The two pools will be disassembled from 16-21 December. The water will be transported directly to a treatment plant in Herning. It took 10 days to transform the Jyske Bank BOXEN multi arena into an international swim stadium with two pools – a competition pool and a warm-up pool. The pools are built from scratch and surrounded by an approximately two-metre-tall pool deck that is flush with the pool edges, while the arena’s stands have been adapted to the new setup. The work of transforming the arena into a swim stadium began on Sunday 1 December – just a few hours after Depeche Mode gave a concert in Jyske Bank BOXEN – and both pools were ready to use on Sunday 8 December. The work was performed by the Italian company Myrtha Pools, who are specialists www.mch.dk in the field. The Italians have previously supplied pools for the 2013 World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona, the 2012 World Swimming Championships in Istanbul and the most recent Olympics in London. The pool deck was delivered and installed by the Danish company Nordic, in cooperation with MCH. Holding 2.4 million litres of water, the two pools are constructed in a steel frame held in place by struts and wire that form the basis for the pool floor. The pools are connected by a Defender filter that cleans the water and keeps it at a constant temperature of 26°C. The water comes from Jyske Bank BOXEN and additional water will be added regularly during the championships to keep the water level steady. European Short Course Swimming Championships 2013 Although Denmark is a true “swimming nation”, the European Short Course Swimming Championships in 2013 is the first international swimming championship for seniors ever held on Danish soil. There are several competitions over a period of four days, from 12-15 December, each day being concluded with medal ceremonies. There are 40 qualifying sessions and 58 semifinals/finals over the period of four days. About 600 swimmers from 41 countries participate at the European Short Course Swimming Championships. Denmark is participating with the biggest team ever in an international championship. With 29 danish swimmers, the host country has one of the bigest teams together with France, Russia, Italy and Germany. There are excellent chances for Danish medal winners in the European Championships. Lotte Friis, Jeanette Ottesen Gray and Rikke Møller Pedersen are designated as the leading medalists. Rikke Møller Pedersen changed in September 2013 club to Herning Svømmeklub. MCH Messecenter Herning and the multi arena, Jyske Bank BOXEN, houses the European Swimming Championships. During a period of 10 days, two swimming basins were build, one for competitions and the other for warm ups, after which a raised floor was established around the basins, so that the poolside is on ground level. Both basins are 25 meters long (called short course in swimming terms). It takes 2.4 million litres of water to fill the two basins. It takes 24 hours to fill them and 10 hours to empty them again. On the event days, the water will maintain a temperature of 26°C. There is room for 6,300 spectators in the arena every day. About 350 volunteers are involved in the conduct of the championships. 150 people from the press will cover the event. Danish TV2 will send a total of 20 hours of TV from the championships. Beside the championships, Danish and international clubs have the possibility to join a swim-camp with accommodation in one of MCH’s adjoining halls and experience the championships, both as a spectator or to take a dip in the special build swimming basin.
