Sandwich Historical Walking Tour of Sandwich Thursday, July 11 Meet at the Village Center at 9:15am and carpool to Sandwich. A walking tour through the historic village of Sandwich highlights the town’s great and quintessential examples of American architectural styles from the colonial period to the early 20th century. Also showcases the people who lived in the village and their history. Docents share amusing anecdotes relating to the famous and not-so-famous residents of Sandwich. The walk takes about an hour and a half and is about a mile in length. Rain cancels the tour. Free but donations are accepted. Lawn of Highfield Hall Blue Grass Festival Sunday, August 4, 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm Free admission Bluegrass on the Lawn concert at Highfield Hall offers free, foot‐stomping entertainment for the entire family. Headline band Chasing Blue is a hot young ensemble from the Berklee College of Music that has become favorites of the national bluegrass circuit. Last year they brought down the house and this year we’ve brought them back as our headliners! They’ll be joined by Four Bridges, a New England based bluegrass band that offers both original and traditional tunes. Our local Falmouth Fiddler’s will complete the roster, offering their own spin on bluegrass, folk and acoustic tunes. Stephanie will lead you through range of motion and strengthening moves from head to toe. Water exercise is a gentle way to exercise joints and muscles. Water supports joints to encourage free movement and also acts as resistance to help build muscle strength. During larger events we may be able to offer more options of food choices. However during smaller events that are scheduled monthly such as Delectable Delites, we aim for a variety of options over time. You are always, of course, welcome to bring your own meal if what we are serving does not meet your expectations. Thank you for understanding. Dance your way to a healthier you learning moves set to hypnotic Latin rhythms. This fitness craze has turned lots of people on to fitness and kept them coming back for more. Due to resident feedback, we are attempting to return to our original cleaning and disinfecting procedure in the Cardio Room. Please be sure to spray the disinfectant on the paper towels (not directly on the machines) and wipe the handles, seats, backrests, etc. thoroughly. Please do not wipe the consoles in order to help ensure that that the equipment electronics do not get too moist over time causing them to malfunction. Info Talk: Medicare Options Fitness Classes Wednesday, July 17, 2:00pm, Ball Room With Rebecca Emerson, Independent Contractor Ms. Emerson will provide you with unbiased information about how Medicare works and what to expect from it. She will discuss how to shop Medicare, the prescription drug part of Medicare, and Medicare supplements. Light refreshments will be served. The talk will conclude with a free raffle. Aerobics: A high energy cardiovascular workout set to upbeat music. Class begins with a warm-up which is followed by high or low impact depending on which you chose. The moves and combinations are taught during the workout. The class ends with an abdominal strengthening session followed by a relaxing full body stretch. We can do that best when you share your ideas with us. Constructive feedback is always most appreciated and easiest to work with, of course. Please know that as we plan events we do consider dietary needs and restrictions. However, because it is not possible to meet every need specifically and therefore someone would likely be left out if we focused our efforts on adjusting our menus for certain health issues or beliefs, we make decisions based on what will work for the majority of residents. Change in Procedure Intense Muscle Conditioning: After a brief warm-up you will be led through challenging muscle conditioning exercises using free weights and resistance bands. All of the muscle groups used in class will be stretched before class ends. Please bring hand weights and a resistance band. Total Body Stretch & Strength: During this class free weights and exercise bands are used to build muscle mass and tone strengthening the bones from the inside out. Increasing the percentage of one’s muscle mass also increases one’s metabolism. This class can be followed either standing near or seated in a chair. Modifications are demonstrated for exercises for which they may be appropriate. The class begins with a brief warm up and ends with a thorough full body stretch. Please bring hand weights and a resistance band. Step Aerobics: Learn various moves and combinations stepping up and down on and around an aerobic bench. This highly aerobic workout begins with a warmup and ends with a cool down and stretch. Water Aerobics: Water eases the pressure on one’s joints and provides resistance for muscle toning as well as cardiovascular exercise. Exercises are performed in the shallow and deep end of the pool, although you may chose to remain in one or the other throughout the class. During the cooler months class is held in the indoor pool and when the weather allows, class moves to the outdoor pool. 5 Yoga for All: Yoga exercise work towards increasing your flexibility, balance and strength. This class helps increase your body awareness and mobility. It is taught in a way that provides you with the opportunity to be calm and reflective leading to an overall sense of well-being. Class begins with a warm-up to heat the muscles and prepare the body for stretching and ends with a calming meditation. Modifications of poses are explained and demonstrated throughout the class. Please be sure to bring your yoga mat, yoga straps, a yoga block and a small pillow. Fitness Equipment Introduction Each resident will receive an orientation to our two Fitness Rooms. During the orientation you will learn how to use the fitness equipment that interests you. Customized directions with your individual settings will be created for you during the orientation. Schedule your orientation with the Health & Wellness Coordinator at the Activities’ Desk. If you fall into any of the following categories... * have a heart condition and have been told only to do physical activity recommended by a doctor * feel pain in your chest during physical activity or have felt it even only once in the past month * lose your balance because of dizziness * lose consciousness * have a bone or joint problem that could be made worse by a change in your physical activity. * are on medication for your blood pressure or a heart condition * know of any other reason that you perhaps should not participate in physical activity ...talk with your doctor in person before participating in classes, using equipment that is new to you and/or becoming much more physically active. may sign up and pay for a guest. Some events are limited to Southport Residents only, other events you may bring guests. Flyers are usually posted on Sunday and will state if guests are welcome. Wait List: Due to the space limitations of some events a Wait List may be necessary. If you sign up on the wait list, if space becomes available we will call you. Please DO NOT pay until you have been called with a confirmed space. Cancellations / Refunds: If you can’t attend an event you have paid for, please complete the Refund Request form. These forms are available in the Information Room beside the beside the SSC mailbox. If there is a wait list and your spot is filled with another resident, we will refund your payment. We cannot refund payments after final counts have been given to caterer, after ticket and/or food has been purchased. How to Pay for an Event: Please use separate checks for each event and make a note in Memo field on check, of the event you are paying for. Please make checks payable to Southport Social Committee: S.S.C. Completed checks can be placed in the mailbox in the Info room. Cash in not accepted. How to Attend Southport Functions: We will post the day we plan to do Table Assignment in the calendar, it is usually the day before the function. Please plan to come by the Village Center to pick up your table number between 10 am and 11:30 am. Table numbers are drawn on a first come first served basis. One person may pick up the table number for others sitting at their table. Ten people per table. You can sit with others you know, or sit with people you haven’t met. If you can’t make it between 10 – 11:30am to pick up your table assignment, and don’t have someone who will do it for you, we will assign you to a table. ********************************************************** Interested in a attending a Southport Function; Information Room has all the postings New events are posted weekly. We ask that you sign up for all functions, even those without a fee, so we know how many are attending for seating, handouts, food, etc. Functions with Fees are reserved on a first PAID basis. A reservation PAID is your only guarantee that you have a reserve spot for any function. When your names appear on the TYPED list, your spot is reserved and paid. Please NOTE: If you sign up before you make your payment your spot is NOT guaranteed and may go to someone that pays before you. All functions are open to Southport Owners first.
