35 years of experience
This year is a special year! Boerma Instituut celebrates her 35 anniversary!
For more than 35 years Boerma Instituut in Aalsmeer has been specialized in organizing national
and international floral design courses, for hobyists and professionals from all over the world.
To give an impression we put up a worldmap in our school where former students pin their
hometown’s location on in 2004.
In Aalsmeer we have a building with three classrooms, a schoolbar called ‘Cafe de Mijnen’ with
a nice terrace and a ‘Floral Design Supplies’ shop in which we have more than 200 different
international floral design books, the magazine ‘Special Bloemschikken’ and many other
materials.

A Little bit of History
A little bit of history
Our history begins more than 120 years ago in Limburg, where our (great)grandfather Pieter
Boerma was the first of the family to go into the Flower Industry in Maastricht on 14 April 1896.
(Grand)father Nico Boerma had a flower shop in the main street of Heerlen for decades and was
the secretary of the Limburg Florists Association for 32 years. During that time he was also a
member of the Board of Directors of Fleurop Interflora Nederland.
First Master designer
We grew up in this culture of florists and heard all the stories in great detail. Then Nico’s son
(Pieter’s grandson), Theo also went into the flower industry. First, he went to the Professional
Floral Design School in Vught, then to the first Master designer course in Holland and to the first
teacher training course. In 1964 a number of florists established the first professional floral
design school in Limburg where Theo (as the only Master designer) was appointed as a teacher.
Moved from Limburg to Aalsmeer
Theo’s family moved to Aalsmeer where he lectured on floral design from 1968 to 1981 at the
Horticultural College. During these 13 years when he taught during the day, he started to work
for himself (as the only one in the Netherlands) with evening courses for the ‘Professional
Florist Diploma’, which was a legal requirement at the time.
Fourth generation
On 1 August 1980, Theo established the Boerma Instituut together with his wife José.
Nowadays their daughter Jacqueline, the fourth generation ‘in flowers’, runs the school. She
started to work at the family company in 1981 and has been in a lot of countries to give
lessons and demonstrations. She is also an international judge for floral competitions.
Legmeerdijk 227
Our building is located on the Legmeerdijk 227 (the N231) in Aalsmeer. A small complex of
greenhouses was converted there in 1980, to create a complete floral design school with three
classrooms, a floral design shop where you can make a choice, amongst other things, from more
than 200 different international flower arrangement books, the magazine
‘Special Bloemschikken’ and many necessary resources and accessories.
Café de Mijnen
In the heart of Boerma Instituut there is a very friendly South-Limburg style school bar: ‘Café de
Mijnen’ with a terrace outside. In fact, this bar is worth a visit in itself because of the
attractive interior and original attributes from the coalmines, creating a piece of ‘underground’
experience.
The Boerma family clearly originates from the South-Limburg mining area where a sociable
and informal atmosphere is still a priority. When you walk into the Boerma Instituut for a short
course or for professional training you soon feel at home. When you will come to us you combine good fun with learning and being active.
Not only do we want to teach floral design, but we work hard to provide the kind of school
where you will have fun and enjoy the Dutch Floral Design experience!
4
Our Courses
All inclusive
We provide everything for our courses, which means you don’t have to buy or get anything to
follow the lessons (There is only one exception, which can be read under the header ‘Short
Courses’). Flowers, greens, vases, containers, sundries and so on are all included in the course
fees. Because we provide everything, you always have the right materials and quantities, the
same as those which are used for the arrangement being demonstrated. This means it is easy to
make a comparison with the example and your own arrangement. More than 40 years of
experience of teaching floral design has shown us that this is not only the best, but actually the
only way of doing it. Furthermore, coffee, tea, soft drinks and lunch are also included in all our
day courses.
Boarding house
If you opt for one of the modular courses, an attractive and cheaper alternative to staying in a
hotel is to make reservations in a Boarding House via the Boerma Instituut. This means that you
stay with a host family in Aalsmeer. The cost of a room in a boarding house is € 35 per person/
per night and is inclusive: you have breakfast every day, your own bedroom, the use of a
bathroom and kitchen. In addition to that, the transport from the Boarding House to the Boerma
Instituut is also included during course days.
Hotels in Aalsmeer
If staying in a boarding house is not your cup of tea, Aalsmeer has some good hotels for a
reasonable price. We can recommend two hotels with personal service and good hospitality;
Hotel ‘Aalsmeer’ and Hotel ‘‘t Schouwse Hof’ at the town square.
Near Aalsmeer there is a Camping Hostel Amsterdam ‘het Amsterdamse Bos’ where you can rent
a tent/caravan or other accommodations. Please visit our website www.dutchfloraldesign.com
for more information about these hotels, the boarding houses and the school bus.
Open House and information
To inform you as fully as possible, we organise an Open House a few times a year. The Boerma
Instituut is open from 12.00 to 16.00 on these days. Obviously entrance and the welcome is
entirely free of charge! Apart from these days, you can also just ring us to make an appointment
to visit the school.
This year, 2015, Open Houses will be held on:
Saturday Januari 17: Winter Romance
Saturday June 20 and Sunday 21: Aalsmeer Flower Festival & Open Garden Weekend
Saturday July 4: Exposition of new Masters
Saturday August 29: Harvest month
Wednesday 4, Thur 5 and Fri 6: House Show and Hanaike Battle
Saturday December 12 and Sunday 13: Christmas Idea
Saturday December 19 and Sunday 20: Christmas Idea
Short Courses and Workshops
In addition to the well-known ‘Professional courses’, Boerma Instituut also provides a large
number of short professional courses which are also very suitable as refresher courses or
opportunities for repeating aspects; they are always educational and interesting! No skills are
required for these courses, which means that they are open to everyone who like flowers and
floral design.
During these courses, all the arrangements are demonstrated and made jointly. These courses
are also very suitable for (prospective) floral arrangers and are also followed by people who want
to know whether a complete professional course is suitable for them. In recent years there has
been increasing interest in the 2-day course for Funeral flower arrangements and the 5-day
course for Bridal flower arrangements, particularly because more and more people want to make
these sorts of arrangements themselves and/or want or start producing them.
5
Hand-tied Bouquets Courses
In the early 1980s a few individuals hesitantly started to make hand-tied bouquets with corn
sheaves in the Netherlands. This was an alternative to the parallel bridal, funeral and gift
bouquets made up to that time. The round bouquet tied by hand, in which all the stems are
placed in one direction (which was fashionable from 1910 to 1920) is now one of the most
widely sold flower arrangements in the Netherlands. During this 2-day course you make four
different bouquets.
Day 1 We start with a ‘simple’ Mixed Hand Tied Bouquet. A traditional bouquet in which all the
materials are tied together by means of the well-known corn sheaf technique. After
cleaning the stems, the materials are placed in the bouquet until this gradually results in
a semi-circular (Biedermeier) shape. After lunch we make a Hand Tied Bouquet in
groups. This is also a bouquet tied as a corn sheaf, but this time all the materials are
added to the bouquet in groups.
This is a very attractive variation on the world famous ‘combined hand-tied bouquet’.
Day 2 The second day is significantly more difficult and we start with a linear hand-tied
bouquet. This results in a modern form which clearly shows the materials that are
incorporated. A plain tall vase is most suitable for this bouquet. A difficult, but very
fascinating subject!
After lunch we will make a Freestyle Hand-tied Bouquet. For this freestyle bouquet,
everyone has an opportunity to work creatively with the techniques they have already
learned. It is almost impossible to determine what the end result will look like in
advance and therefore it is not easy to achieve a really beautiful result.
The materials we use will be different each season.
Funeral Arrangement Courses
These 2-day Professional Courses are not only suitable for (former) students, but also for
florists and their staff who want to follow a short practice-oriented course to master a few extra
techniques or repeat them.
These sorts of arrangements, often known as funeral arrangements, are an important source
of income for florists (and particularly for funeral directors). The techniques which have to be
learned for these sorts of arrangements are by no means unique and can also be used for many
other arrangements, such as table decorations, car decorations and room decorations.
Day 1 In the morning there will be an explanation about the new funeral range of Oasis®
products. Then a demonstration. Urn decoration. This arrangement is getting more
and more popular and it can be used on several subjects.
In the afternoon students make a larger themed arrangement together in small groups
of two or three students, which could serve amongst other things to decorate the coffin.
Thus we will work with an electrical saw. All the arrangements can be brought home,
except for the group arrangement.
Day 2 In the morning a demonstration again, followed by a funeral pillow arrangement,
the base of the pillow will be self-made. In the afternoon, either one Latin Cross,
Wreath or a Heart is made on an Oasis® base. The shape of the base is the most
important thing in this respect.
At the end of the afternoon we close the two days with handing out the certificates.
If you would like to know more about ‘funeral arrangements’ there are many more
magnificent ideas for sale on this subject in our bookshop with more than 200 different
international titles.

Table arrangements courses
In order to bring back a real fresh, cheerful and fragrant season into your home, we are
organising a number of ‘Table arrangement’ courses, colourful courses in which we make three
different arrangements, each with its own specific techniques and challenges. This evening
course is conducted in Dutch and English and the lessons are from 19.15 to 22.00.
Spring Course
This course is on 3 Wednesday evenings:
Evening 1. Evening 2. Evening 3. Flower cake: You can choose to make a flower tart or three cupcakes.
Butter cup arrangement: Ranonculus. These real spring flowers are available for
just a few month a year, so use them!
Seasonal herb arrangement: Great fun to put them on your table during a
delicious dinner.
Autumn Course
Evening 1. Evening 2. Evening 3. Sun flower arrangement: a shiny arrangement with the beautiful Helianthus
annuus.
Autumn wreath: a ‘floral ring’ covered with all kind of garden materials.
Autumn arrangement: make a great and colourful arrangement with bark,
berries, fruits, moss and Salix, the willow.
7
Bridal Work Course (2 or 5 days)
This professional course for ‘Bridal Flower Work’ is intended for students and floral arrangers
who like to become skilled in the (usually) joyful aspect of floristry, but is also suitable for those
who want to refresh their skills.
This course starts at the beginning, which means that all the activities are demonstrated and
then built up jointly.
During this short professional course, the emphasis is on the often difficult technical aspects of
bridal arrangements. This means that in addition to other arrangements, one bridal bouquet is
also placed in an Oasis® holder, while one is made using different wire techniques.
In addition, a number of other techniques are used during that week, which means that this
short course involves some very interesting and educational training. In addition to the
above-mentioned bridal bouquets, the timetable for this course also includes a wire-tied
buttonhole for the bride and bridegroom, and an arrangement on or against a ‘Candle for the
Virgin Mary’, an extensive decoration for the altar and a bridal car decoration.
Course Schedule
Day 1 A hand tied bridal bouquet and a bridal bouquet on in Bolsa Flora® holder in
which the handle is incorporated differently as well as a matching corsage;
Day 2 A romantic Bridal Bouquet on an Oasis® holder and several trendy corsages.
People who have booked the two days bridal course will receive their certificate
at the end of the day.
Day 3 An altar arrangement. The altar is the centre piece of the church when the wed
ding couple is there. The arrangement on it has to adjust well to the other
flower arrangements. It is significant that you talk with the pastor, priest or
rabbi about the altar arrangement because some religions have different
determined decorative restrictions. about floral arrangements.
We will also give you different kind of ideas of how to decorate bridal chairs.
Day 4 A wired bridal bouquet, incorporating orchids and roses, amongst other things.
Wire techniques in combination with glued techniques. The materials depend on
the season to a great extent;
Day 5 On the last day the bridal car is decorated by a group.
Think of decorating the aerial, the back shelf and an arrangement on the hood,
in which the attachment to the base is a particularly important aspect.
8
Workshops
Boerma Instituut organises several courses of one day, with a lot of conviviality and creativity.
In this way you can also get acquainted with the way we teach. Of course all materials and an
enjoyable, extensive lunch are included in the course.
Each time a colourful and refresh theme is offered. After the lesson you will return home with
your own creation, which you can enjoy for some time. With the instructions and information you
have received that day, you can make the arrangement at home as many times as you like.

Biesen, Belgium. Fleuramour yearly opens with
‘Hatsday’. If you join the event with a ‘floral’ hat
on Friday you will receive a glass of cava from the
organisation.
Everybody (men and women) can show their hat on
the catwalk. We will rent a bus and you can join us
with your floral hat. On the way back we will have a
nice dinner in Maastricht.
House Show and Cross Cultural Week
November 2014 was the first time that the Boerma Instituut organized an Ikebana Workshop and
a Hanaike Battle*. Because of the great fun we had and the interest in the event we are going to
organize it again this year. And this time we want to make it bigger and better!
Hanaike Battle 2015
A Hanaike battle is a competition in which 3 or more contestants have 5 minutes to imrpovize an
arrangement, guided and driven by loud, fast music and cheers of the audience. It’s a real show
and truly something that you must experience.
In 2014 four Japanese Floral Designers battled four Dutch Floral Designers, you can find a video
on our website on the media page.
This year the Hanaike Battle will be on Friday the 6th of November.
Ikebana Workshop
During the Cross Cultural Week there will be several Ikebana Workshops to participate.
Mr. Oshun Tsukagoshi a real Ikebana Master from Japan, who will also participate in the
Hanaike Battle will be your teacher.
Sake tasting and Sushi dinner
On the Friday Evening of the Cross Cultural Week there will be a saké tasting, with saké brought
to you by a Japanese Saké Exporter, and there will also be a Japanese Chef who will prepare Sushi on the spot!
If you want to participate in this event, then you can register on our website, or at the school
during one of our Open Houses.
It’s also possible to combine the Saké tasting with an Ikebana Workshop.
10
Ikebana Workshops during Cross Cultural Week
Ikebana does not need to be placed in the tokonoma of a Japanese room, nor in any specially
designated space. Any plant material from nature can be arranged in an attractive way. Ikebana
complements any kind of space. Japanese or Western influenced style enriches the atmosphere.
Last year on November 5, 6 and 7 there was a different Ikebana Workshop each day. Come and
get inspired by this totally different way of flower arranging.
The dates for this year will be anounced as soon as possible. Keep an eye on the website or
facebook!
Aalsmeer Flower Festival
Open House and High Tea
During the Aalsmeer Flower Festival we have an Open House. As always, there will be
demonstrations by our teachers and students, but this time we will also have a high tea!
Everyone who would like to order a high tea is welcome to do so! If everything is as we hope it
will be, it will be lovely weather and you can enjoy a real Aalsmeers High Tea on our terrace.
The Aalsmeer Flower Festival is an event organised by a collective of entrepreneurs in Aalsmeer
to show everyone the beauty of our little flower village.
During the Aalsmeer Flower Festival you can visit a couple of special locations and join in some
of the activities.

European Master Certificate
What is the EMC program?
A very practical-oriented, accelerated curriculum focused on mechanical and technical skills,
theory and creativity required to become a professional in the European flower business.
How do we achieve this?
European Master Certification program will expose student designers to multitude of creative
opportunities to use flowers for various occasions. They will be introduced to new design styles,
shapes, color combinations, techniques, new materials and new ways of using materials. EMC
program will teach students to look at flowers closely to discover the differences in their personalities, emotions and possibilities, and learn to use them at their full potential. Today, and
even more in the future, alternative materials to foam are being explored for aesthetic-creative
as well as environmental reasons. Emotion (Advanced Class) and functionality need to be combined with good skills and knowledge (Foundation Class) of our products to be competitive in
our field. More competent and qualified the florist, the better he is able to lead with style and
trends in his community.
WHY are there 3 parts to this Certification Program?
We know that an effective certification program is a step by step process which takes time.
PART 1 FOUNDATION class teaches all the basic skills, techniques and knowledge required to
be covered in the European Design teaching system, in an accelerated format.
PART 2 SELF PRACTICUM is a self study period between Part 1 & 3 whereby the student prac-
tices all of the skills and techniques taught in Part 1 on daily basis to improve the execution.
Assigned schedule of skill practice and assigned list of floral nomenclature are given as required
study to prepare for Part 3.
PART 3 ADVANCED class is where passion and emotion combines to bring on creativity. This
class teaches application of good skills, knowledge and functionality in addition to expressing it
creatively.
It is followed by Final Examination which will determine each student’s status of Certification
EMC program was formulated to be the most comprehensive European study which we feel will
nurture your passion to boost your design ability.
Who can attend?
The Foundation Class is open to anyone committed to learning European Design.
To join the Advanced Class you will first need to have taken the Foundation Class plus you will
need some Self Practicum to be ready for the Advanced Class.
Where?
EMC PART 1: Foundation Class 2015 (August 24-28)
The first part can be done at our school, Boerma Instituut in Aalsmeer
EMC PART 2: The second part is a Self Study, from which you can get the information and necessary schedule for when you register for PART 3
EMC PART 3: Advanced Class 2016
The third part of the course can only be done in Bruges, Belgium and Paris, France

Dutch Floral Design Club
In September 2013 we started with the Dutch Floral Design Club. Every second thursday of the
month we organize a DFD Clubnight, where it is also about social floral contacts.
The teachers of the Boerma Instituut are more of a guide on these evenings than a teacher. He/
she will not decide what will be made during class, but will talk about the techniques and possibilities
of the materials during the ‘ discussion time’ before we start making the arrangement.
After that he/she will help out whenever needed.
Together we decide what will happen on the DFD Clubnights. For example: Table Arrangements,
Handtied Bouquets, Wall Decorations and techniques like braiding/plating/knotting, glueing and
stacking. You name it, nothing is to crazy, because the point of these evenings is to inspire each
other.
During the DFD Clubnights we will ofcourse take care of the materials needed, but -different
than with our usual courses and workshops- we ask you to bring some bases and extra materials yourself, so that we can think about the arrangement a long time before the evening starts.
This all will make discussing the arrangement afterwards more interesting.
Who can apply for this?
- Students of our Dutch Floral Design courses (From day 15 and on)
- (Former) students of the Advanced courses (AFDF)
- Masters in Dutch Floral Design
Of course you will get a lot of nice discounts with your DFD Clubcard on floral design materials
and books in our Floral Design Supplies-shop and on several courses at the Boerma Instituut.
The DFD Clubnights
The DFD Clubnights are held from 19.00 untill 22.15 ‘o clock:
At 19.00 ‘o clock we start with a cup of coffee or tea with a tidbit. This will be the ‘discussion
time’, in which we take the time to discuss what will be crated that evening.
From 19.30 to 21.45 we will create the arrangements, after which we will discuss them, ofcourse
accompanied by a drink.
There are two DFD Club membership possibilities:
- DFD Club Goldmember: Every second thursday of the month an inspiring DFD Clubnight,
flowers, green, extra materials, bases, and twoo consumptions per clubnight included. You can
use your card for an attractive 3% discount in the Boerma FDS-(web)shop, special discounts on
several courses. You’ll also receive a monthly newsletter and some other nice offers.
- DFD Club Greenmember: You can use your card for an attractive 3% discount in the Boerma
FDS-(web)shop, special discounts on several courses. You’ll also receive a monthly newsletter
and some other nice offers. So the only thing that’s different is that you won’t be able to join the
Clubnights.
- The DFD Clubcard is bound to person and is not transferable
- You register indefinitely the period of notice is 2 calendar months. You can cancel in writing or by sending an e-mail to
DFDClub@boerma.l
- Each calenderyear you can -minimum of two weeks beforehand- cancel a DFD Clubnight twice without costs.
- When you cancel a clubnight in less than two weeks the monthly fee will still be charged.
- If you temporarily can’t visit the DFD Clubnights for a few months, the DFD Goldmembership can be changed into a DFD
Greenmembership temporarily.
- Changes to a membership need to be e-mailed to the administration. This counts for changes in adress, changes in membership, etc.
- Without canceling of the Membership it will be tacitly extended.
- Contribution for the DFD Greenmembership must be payed upfront per year by preauthorized debit and is 15,- For the DFD Goldmembership there is also a 15,- fee on yearly basis + a subsription cost of 50,- a month.
This sum is for the flowers-, green- and extra materials, bases and two consumptions each clubnight. The monthly sum of
50,- wil be payed through preauthorized debit on the first (1st) day of each calendarmonth.

Professional Courses in Dutch Floral Design
Our professional courses are organised for anyone who would like to start their own floristry or
start to work as a professional flower arranger. In addition, this professional course is also
followed by many people who want to know everything about flower arrangement as a hobby.
De green Boerma pin
is awarded to all those
who pass the DFD
Course exam.
The Boerma Instituut is one of the very few schools in the world where it is possible to master
the most important aspects of ‘Dutch style’ floral design in a very short period of time!
The aim of this course is to provide a practical course that is as complete as possible in a very
short space of time. This means that it is necessary to work hard. From experience we know that
it is a lot of work, both for you and for us. If we all make a big effort together you have a very
good chance of concluding the course with positive results.
The more often you do a flower arrangement, the better and quicker it all goes. Therefore we
regularly give you homework during the course. In this way, you certainly acquire more
experience, more routine and extremely importantly, above all more self- confidence. The more
you practise, the easier it all becomes. This is particularly important for the examination at the
end of the course.
The teachers at the Boerma Instituut will stimulate and supervise you in all sorts of ways, but
please do not forget that the final results depend on you to a great extent.
For the Professional Diploma course there are two possibilities:
Dutch Floral Design (DFD), the International Course
This day course is conducted in English consists of 30 days: every day comprises 2 blocks of
lessons of 2½ hours, including a lunch and coffee/tea break.
This course is a full-time 6 weeks course, 5 days per week and starts twice a year in February/
March and August/September from 10.00 – 15.45. The course is given both in Dutch and in
English.
This means that the lessons are not only understandable for foreign students, but also for Dutch
people. It is precisely this mix that makes these groups very fascinating and interesting.
The international professional course VO161 start at the end of February and the VOI62 starts at
the beginning of September; This course can also be followed in the right order per module.
After every module that has been completely followed, you receive a certificate (in English) and
after the end of the last module, module 6, you can take the practical examination.
Dutch Floral Design (DFD), the Dutch Course
This Dutch Floral Design (DFD) course is conducted in Dutch consists of 30 days: every day
comprises 2 blocks of lessons of 2½ hours from 10.00 – 15.45, including lunch and coffee/
tea break. This course of one day a week starts two times in a calendar year: in February and in
September.
The following dates apply: VON1D is given on Wednesdays, starting in February and ends in
November. The VON2D is given on Tuesdays, starting in September and ending in June.
15
The practical lessons
During the lessons all activities are demonstrated, made and repeated. These include:
Hand-tied arrangements: round and mixed bouquets; bouquets in groups and one- sided
bouquets, all arranged with the corn sheaf or parallel technique;
Funeral arrangements: classical mixed and modern linear funeral branches; held in an Oasis®
funeral holder or a background you make yourself;
Bridal bouquets (both using wire and placed in Oasis®): Biedermeier bridal bouquets, classical

Oasis® table wreaths and decorations.
Theoretical knowledge
As we cannot imagine that someone can be professional without having any theoretical
knowledge, the most important theory subjects are combined in a concise lesson folder.
Two of the blocks of lessons are devoted to these course materials. The whole thing is kept
short and written in such a way that anyone can use it as a study folder or as a reference work.
These lesson materials comprise, amongst other things:
Knowledge of materials: a summary of the most common tools, resources and extra materials;
Care and handling of cut flowers, house plants/greenhouse plants, plant diseases and systems
for watering plants;
Nomenclature: knowledge of plants, a short explanation of the scientific names and a list of the
most important cut flowers, house plants and other living materials; Aesthetic development:
explanation of the most important forms and styles in floral design,composition and the theory
of form, symbolism of colours;
Colour theory: some of the most important terms and the use of colours in the practice of floral
design;
Art history: a summary of the most important architectural styles in Europe and a few
movements in painting.
Included in the Dutch Floral Design Course
Knife, scissors and stem cleaner;
Brochures with bridal work, ‘Special Bloemschikken’;
Colour brochure with Oasis products;
On one of the first days of the course there is a visit to the Flower auction and the
‘Cultra’wholesale centre;
Brochure of Fair Flowers Fair Plants;
Practical examination and all materials;
Certificate or (after passing the exam) the Professional Floral Design diploma.
Practical examination of the DFD
The examination pieces are assessed for design, keeping qualities and
technique. The examination that is taken for the Dutch Professional course is a practical
examination.
During the examination every candidate must make five flower arrangements;
The parts of this examination are announced to the candidates during the two days for the
preparation of the examination.
16
Advanced Dutch Floral Design Course
The Advanced Professional (ADFD) course is a continuation of the Professional Floral Design
Course (DFD). This is important, as arrangements are made during this follow-up course for
which the basic techniques have already been mastered.
The Silver Boerma Pin
is awarded to all those
who pass the ADFD
Course exam.
Some of the subjects of the Follow-up Professional course
Laurel wreath: this classical Greek and Roman victory wreath is made on a background you can
make
yourself. Therefore this wreath is not a funeral wreath;
Car decoration: a large scale decoration, and at the same time a good opportunity to work as a
team in which consultation is very important. Don’t forget your raincoat and camera;
Room decorations and hanging floral objects;
Combination of flowers, vegetables and fruit: by incorporating everything in groups and blocks
of colour it is possible to build up an attractive colourful design;
Creative Plant Design;
Different bridal bouquets like: Linear, Cascade and a Pomander bridal bouquet;
Classical arm bouquet: this looks deceptively simple but proves to be quite challenging! The
bouquet is not carried in the hand, but placed on the arm. Pieter Boerma (the first generation)
made this sort of bouquet for Queen Astrid of Belgium on behalf of Queen Wilhelmina in 19234
on the occasion of the opening of the Albert Canal
Buttonholes on a frame of wires, it is possible to make very beautiful buttonholes. When you
master the techniques, you automatically start to enjoy it!
Theoretical lessons like knowledge about floral materials and table etiquette.
Certificates, Examination and the Diploma
If you don’t want to do an examination, you will receive a certificate of participation at the end.
During the examination, every candidate must make two arrangements. These are announced
during the preparation day for the examination, when the Boerma Instituut makes a choice from
the following subjects:
Table decoration;
Bridal bouquet;
Buttonholes;
Decorating an object;
Hand-tied bouquet.
These arrangements are assessed by three experts for their shape, lasting qualities, creativity
and technique.
Advanced Dutch Floral Design Course (ADFD) in English
This full-time course lasts four weeks, five days a week.
Course code VVI1D.
Advanced Dutch Floral Design Course (ADFD) in Dutch
Advanced course, is given on 20 lesson days from 10.00 - 15.45.
This course only be attended when spoken Dutch.

Master in Dutch Floral Design
For more development and creativity
As you will have understood, the MDFD is the next step in the field of
professional training. Experience has shown that most of our students start to seriously consider
participating in the ‘last step’ in floral design during this MDFD Course. Growing self-confidence
in this field, combined with the development of the students’ own talent and creativity, plays an
important role on the long road to the status of Master in Dutch Floral Design, which is ‘top of
the bill’ worldwide.
The Golden Boerma
Pin (for gentleme) and
Golden Boerma Chain
(for ladies) is awarded to
those that pass the MDFD
A large proportion of the demonstrations and lessons are given by internationally known master
Course exam.
arrangers, some of whom will even bring their own books along. Admittedly, the timetable is
more or less set, but the choice of materials is planned on the basis of mutual consultation. It
also depends on any new trends and/or materials.
Important information
The full-time 4-week International Master in Dutch Floral Design Course (MDFD) is given 5 days
a week. Again, the lessons are from 10.00 - 15.45, but from 9.00 to 9.55 and from 15.45 to
17.00, the students are expected to use the time for the necessary research and to prepare the
parts to be made for the practical examination. Calculations & proposals, collages, drawings and
a Marquette will have to be made for the exam.
A list is given below with a limited number of practical elements, but as the course is given in
English, we assume that the Dutch speaking students will also (more or less) understand these
terms, so this is a good exercise!
- A different approach to floristry, - A themed project on a budget, - Practical Avant-Garde, Gala works, - A bouquet is but a bouquet, - Art of hype.
A broad range of specialists
A list of Dutch floral designers who are known all over the world and who have given lessons for
our international Master Course in recent years is given below in random order:
Johan Huisman, Irma Mus, Xander Zijlmans, Pim van den Akker, Bart van der Elksen, Aad van
Uffelen, Carel Schenk, Jacqueline Boerma, Petra van der Veen, Wim Hazelaar, Peter Boeijkens,
Nicky Markslag, etc., etc. This is just a random choice and for an outsider, ‘just a list of names’!
However, they are all people with unique expertise and special skills.
Examination and Diploma
During our International Master Course, there are two practical examinations. One of these is a
group examination, the other an individual examination. The diploma is only issued if both parts
of the examination are past with an adequate mark.
The two parts are announced on the second day of the course so that everyone has sufficient
time to
prepare. The work pieces are assessed by the three examiners for:
Design;
Technique;
Creativity;
Colour;
Choice of materials;
The Examination assignment book.
18
Private lessons in Dutch Floral Design
Private lessons are the best way of mastering the techniques perfectly. Private lessons can be
provided at any level you want. You can see these lessons as an investment in your future in
floristry.
The course is entirely adapted to your own requirements but obviously the number of
arrangements depends on your skill and/or experience. It is not permitted to bring anyone along
to the classroom to look, and video recordings are not permitted either.
If your knowledge of flower arrangement is not very extensive, we advise a course of at least
three days:
Day1 Looking after cut flowers, various techniques using wire and a Biedermeier (bridal
bridesmaid)
bouquet tied with wire;
Day 2 Modern wire-tied bridal bouquet and buttonholes;
Day 3 Various arrangements in oasis, such as ‘gardens’ and linear arrangements.
The arrangements that you make are up to you, depending on the level of floral design and of
course your interest but the above mentioned subject are the most important parts in our point
of view. When a fourth and fifth day are added, we advise going into more detail for some
aspects and repeating a few aspects with other materials.
The course fee includes:
Flowers and leaf materials;
Other materials that are required, like containers, vases and so on;
All lunches, including coffee/tea and (soft) drinks;
Knife and scissors;
Brochures;
Certificate, in English.

Group lessons/workshops and/or demonstrations
We can offer businesses, organisations and associations with their own specific requirements
different ‘tailor-made’ course programmes. These practical lessons can be given in the Boerma
Instituut in Aalsmeer, where we have all the necessary materials at our disposal, but possibly
also at a different location in the Netherlands or abroad.
Whether this concerns a product presentation, a day to spoil clients and/or employees, a
demonstration or professional training: everything is possible!
Just tell us how, when, where, for what, with what, and with whom you want training, and it will
undoubtedly be possible to think of a pleasant floral solution at every level; whether this
concerns a hand-tied bouquets, a Biedermeier arrangement, table wreathes, Christmas
arrangements or an extremely exclusive floral design.
All this can be arranged within a time frame and for the size of group you want; from half a day
to (for example) five or more days. If you book a complete day course or training, this includes
a lunch buffet served in our attractive ‘Café de Mijnen’.
Tools
For the group lessons as mentioned above knife and scissors are included. People might prefer
to be able to bring their own tools. They are allowed to put it in their suitcases but NOT as hand
luggage. Buying it at the school is also possible: a Oasis® knife is € 1,50. Scissors are around
€ 8,- or € 17,50.
