both private and community based clubs striving to put “Business Best Practice” into their clubs.
I would like to thank the clubs of Queensland, the GQ Staff and all Technical Members and gymnasts
for a very welcome back to Queensland and for all the support you have given me in my role as the Club
Services Manager.
Three Club Toolbox briefings were conducted in 2012 continuing to provide a forum for which information
and expertise was shared between each club in attendance. Each of these sessions were filmed for regional
clubs and distributed along with the relevant notes from each topic discussed. Each Toolbox session was
well attended as clubs realise the benefits to be gained for their clubs from the knowledge of the specific
topics offered.
The Club Services Manager undertook a number of club visits in total to 54 clubs in all areas of Queensland
providing a face to face contact and an opportunity for clubs to raise any concerns and issues directly.

Olympic Games 2012
There were many fantastic achievements in 2012, the highlight and most important being Joshua Jefferis’
selection as the MAG gymnast for the 2012 London Olympics. Joshua qualified for Competition II – the
Individual All-Around Competition at this event finishing 19th, the best ever finish for an Australian male
gymnast in an Olympic event. We would like to congratulate Joshua on his achievements in 2012 and wish

State Championships
The Men’s program in Queensland grew over the past year with an increase in competitive numbers at the
State Championships in most divisions with 101 athletes competing in the MAG Senior State Championships
and 170 in the MAG Junior States. The results for the top positions at the 2012 State Championships were
shared by a number of clubs and not dominated by any one club highlighting the improvement of the clubs
delivery of the National Levels Program.
Judges numbers at the 2012 State Championships were encouraging. A large number of Intermediate and
Intermediate Bronze judges become technical members throughout 2012. It is anticipated these numbers
will be reflected in the availability and the level of judges for events in 2013.
Congratulations to the following Technical members for achieving the highest level of success for 2011 at

I would like to thank the members of the SMC for their time and valuable contributions over the past year.
I would encourage all coaches and clubs to continually provide feedback to SMC members, particularly
those clubs in regional areas, who have 2 SMC representatives specifically from regional areas.
I also wish to thank the Gymnastics Qld staff, particularly WAG Sport Manager, Kate Cannon, CEO Kym
Dowdell, and Events Director Joann Aitken, for their support and assistance throughout the year.
Equipment/Apparatus Standards
In 2012, the SMC introduced detailed Apparatus Standards for all sanctioned events. The standards varied

for each level group (eg 1-3, 4-5, 6-10) based on the level of skills performed. Whilst it was a lengthy
process and required some venues to upgrade/modify their equipment, it was necessary. It will also ensure
more standardised apparatus are provided at all events around the State. These apparatus standards will
continue to be monitored and changed if required.
State Squad
The State Squad program was reintroduced in 2012, primarily in the format of clinics following Junior State
Championships and Qld Clubs. There was also a coach’s clinic for Level 7-10 coaches in February.
We need to build on what has been completed in 2012 and further develop the program for 2013 and
beyond to include selection of gymnasts and regional visits to clubs.
2012 Olympic Games
Congratulations to our Qld High Performance Centre gymnast, Larrissa Miller, on her selection and
performance at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. This is an outstanding achievement for Larrissa and the
WAG community should be very proud that Queensland has produced another Olympian. Congratulations
to Larrissa’s coaches Vladimir and Irina Joura.

Moving Ahead to 2013 & Beyond
If our sport is to continue to grow and achieve successful competitive outcomes, we need greater
participation from a greater number of clubs throughout the State.
The SMC is investigating variations to competition formats to allow more clubs to host sanctioned events
and levels tests. This will in turn provide more competition opportunities for more gymnasts and clubs,
particularly in regional areas.

Education
Gymnastics Queensland released the 2012 RG Level 1-6 package and to date have only had positive
feedback. The comprehensive package includes set music, text and video. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank Edith Peluso, Anya Tabolkina and Gina Peluso for their hard work in preparing and
presenting this package to the community.
Workshops were conducted throughout the year to educate coaches, judges and athletes.
2012 Wrap-Up
2012 proved to be an interesting year for Rhythmic Gymnasts in Queensland.
All of our Trials and State Championships were run and hosted by the RG community and proved extremely
successful events. Host Clubs were Moreton Bay College Gymnastics, Splitz Gym and Logan City PCYC
(Club Toriana), with all clubs offering a fun experience for gymnasts, coaches, judges and spectators.
RG also held its inaugural Levels 1-6 and RGSkools events. These events ran smoothly and the numbers in
each level were high considering this was the first year. They were attended by a large number of spectators
and I feel these numbers will be much higher in 2013.
Our Level 7-10, International and Groups Trial and State events were again a success. With 2012 being
an Olympic year not many of our gymnasts travelled throughout the year. We all watched with anticipation
the Rhythmic event and were impressed with the Russian gymnasts and their beautiful routines. All our
gymnasts have been working hard to improve on their routines and scores for 2013.
Looking Forward
2013 brings new beginnings within the sport with the new code of points being released. With this brings
new judges courses which everyone must attend to update and new routine choreography which will
no doubt be a challenge for both gymnasts, coaches and judges. I wish everyone best of luck for the
beginning of the new cycle in the sport.

State Championships
State Championships was held at Ormiston College with 184 athletes/ 72 groups competing from Level
1 to Level 8. Numbers were lower than previous years as the decision to bring ACR into the combined
Gymsports format for National Championships in Sydney in May led to a very short preparation season
within the state in 2012.
The gymnasts produced excellent results
and continued to amaze and delight with
their performances. 3 Mixed Pairs, 8 Pairs
and 11groups qualified for selection for
the National Championships.

Queensland Cup and National Clubs Championships
Queensland Cup was again held in conjunction with National Club Championships on the Sunshine Coast
at Caloundra Stadium. This was a great venue for a successful Championships as well as attracting local
media, much to the delight of our level 2 and 3 gymnasts who were filmed and interviewed by Channel
7 and 9. The venue was set up well and the competition ran to time. Entries were disappointing for this
competition, with just 160 gymnasts compete across all National levels and international program divisions
Both QLD Cup and the National Club Champion awards were won by Robertson Gymnastics Academy
with Mitchelton Youth Club in second place.
International Competitions
Internationally, Queensland had two women’s groups in the Junior division,
selected to represent Australia at the World Age Group Championships in
Orlando Florida USA. Both group worked exceptionally hard and competed
consistently to achieve this selection in a competitive national squad.

children with the foundation skills needed for all areas of life.
The objectives of the initiative are to:
•
Encourage children to participate in these programs with the view to increasing participation within our member gymnastics clubs
•
Provide further opportunities for the workforce, such as additional coaching opportunities within schools and potential council run initiatives
•
Encourage the use of movement activities in the delivery of school curriculum subjects within the classroom

I am pleased to report that in 2012 Gymnastics Queensland has returned an operating surplus of $89, 430
to further consolidate our financial position and to increase Retained Earnings up to the value of $846, 000.
YMCA Acacia Ridge Gymnastics Club
Coaches at YMCA Enoggera Gymnastics Club
While the 2010 and 2011 years predominantly saw a focus on “repairing the balance sheet” and “establishing
reserves”, 2012 while maintaining strong financial controls, set about focusing financial priorities on
strengthening the business operations of the organisation through :
•
funding strategic initiatives
•
critically reviewing / auditing all expenses and processes of the Association
•
reviewing all pricing of services provided by Gymnastics Queensland and
•
improving services provided to the members of Gymnastics Queensland
This was able to be achieved by ensuring costs to members were kept stable with Total Revenue being
$2.95 million ($46K less than 2011 figures), with particular emphasis being placed on Club Affiliation fees,
where no increase was applied to the Flat Fee Schedule for 2012.
We are extremely grateful for the partnership with the Queensland Government through the departments of
Sport and Recreation Queensland and Queensland Academy of Sport for their continued financial support.
Gymnastics Queensland maintained its funding for 2013, which was received and recorded as “Unearned
Income” in the books as at 31 December 2012.
YMCA Bowen Hills Gymnastics Club
Larrissa Miller and Dignitaries with the kids at YMCA

We would also like to thank Gymnastics Australia for their continued financial and structural support in the
development of the High Performance program in Queensland.
This financial position provides a solid base for which Gymnastics Queensland will not only be able to
improve the quality and extent of its services to members but also resource the identified strategies
designed to grow and develop the sport into the future. I take this opportunity to thank the Management
Committee in addition to Kym Dowdell, CEO and Teresa Muirhead, State Administrator for their focussed
approach in prudently managing the financial affairs of the organisation.

Income Tax
No provision for income tax has been raised as the Association operates solely as a non-profit,
sporting organisation and accordingly is exempt from income tax under Section 50-10 of the Income
Tax Assessment Act 1997.
b.
Property Plant and Equipment
Each class of property, plant and equipment is carried at cost or fair value less depreciation and
impairment losses.
833,242
All assets are depreciated on a diminishing value basis over their useful lives to the Association.
Depreciation
The depreciable amount of all fixed assets is depreciated on a straight-line basis over their useful
lives to the Association commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use.
An asset’s carrying amount is written down immediately to its recoverable amount if the asset’s
carrying amount is greater than its estimated recoverable amount.
Gains and losses on disposals are determined by comparing proceeds with the carrying amount.
These gains or losses are included in the income statement. When revalued assets are sold,
amounts included in the revaluation reserve relating to that asset are transferred to retained profits.
c.
Impairment of Assets
At the end of each reporting period, the association reviews the carrying values of its tangible and
intangible assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have been impaired.
If such an indication exists, the recoverable amount of the asset, being the higher of the asset’s fair
value less costs to sell and value-in-use, is compared to the asset’s carrying value. Any excess of
the asset’s carrying value over its recoverable amount is expensed to the statement of
comprehensive income.
Where it is not possible to estimate the recoverable amount of an individual asset, the association
estimates the recoverable amount of the cash-generating unit to which the asset belongs.
d.
Cash and Cash Equivalents
Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at-call with banks, other short-term
highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts. Bank
overdrafts are shown within borrowings in current liabilities in the statement of financial position.
e.
Revenue
Revenue is recognised when invoices are raised.
Interest revenue is recognised when received.
Distribution revenue is recognised when the right to receive a distribution has been established.
All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST).

Goods and Services Tax (GST)
Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of
GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Tax Office. In these circumstances the GST is
recognised as part of the cost of acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of the expense.
Receivables and payables in the Balance Sheet are shown inclusive of GST.
h.
Inventories
Inventories are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Costs are assigned on an
average cost basis.
Government grants
Provisions
Provisions are recognised when the association has a legal or constructive obligation, as a result of
past events, for which it is probable that an outflow of economic benefits will result and that outflow
can be reliably measured. Provisions recognised represent the best estimate of the amounts
required to settle the obligation at the end of the reporting period.
Intangibles
Intangible assets are measured at depreciated replacement cost and are amortised over their useful
lives to the Association.

QUEENSLAND GYMNASTIC ASSOCIATION INC.
2012 Annual Report
INDEPENDENT AUDITOR’S REPORT TO THE MEMBERS OF
QUEENSLAND GYMNASTIC ASSOCIATION INC.
Report on the Financial Report
We have audited the accompanying financial report, being a special purpose financial report, of
Queensland Gymnastic Association Inc. (the Association), which comprises the balance sheet as at 31
December 2012, and the income statement, statement of recognised income and expense, cash flow
statement, a summary of significant accounting policies, other explanatory notes and the statement by the
board of management.
Board of Management’s Responsibility for the Financial Report
The board of management of the Association is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of
the financial report and has determined that the accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial
statements, which form part of the financial report, are consistent with the financial reporting requirements
of the Associations Incorporation Act (Qld) 1981 and are appropriate to meet the needs of the members.
The board’s responsibilities also include designing, implementing and maintaining internal control relevant
to the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report that is that is free from material
misstatement, whether due to fraud or error; selecting and applying appropriate accounting policies; and
making accounting estimates that are reasonable in the circumstances.
Auditor’s Responsibility
Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on our audit. No opinion is
expressed as to whether the accounting policies used, as described in Note 1, are appropriate to meet
the needs of the members. We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards.
These Auditing Standards require that we comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit
engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report
is free from material misstatement.
An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in
the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgment, including the
assessment of risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In
making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation
and fair presentation of the financial report in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the
circumstance, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal
control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the
reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the board, as well as evaluating the overall
presentation of the financial report.
The financial report has been prepared for distribution to members for the purpose of fulfilling the board’s
financial reporting under the Associations Incorporation Act (Qld) 1981. We disclaim any assumption of
responsibility for any reliance on this report or on the financial report to which it relates to any person
other than the members, or for any purpose other than that for which it was prepared.
We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for
our audit opinion.
Independence
In conducting our audit, we have complied with the independence requirements of Australian professional
ethical pronouncements.
Auditor’s Opinion
In our opinion, the financial report of Queensland Gymnastic Association Inc. presents fairly, in all
material respects, the financial position of Queensland Gymnastic Association Inc. as of 31 December
2012 and of its financial performance for the year then ended in accordance with the accounting policies
described in Note 1 to the financial statements.
