The staging of a successful
Commonwealth Games gymnastics
event and the uniting of the
gymnastics community for the FIG
125th Anniversary celebrations were
significant achievements for 2006. A
noteworthy outcome on an operational
level was the completion and launching
of a national Information Technology
plan.
With the Commonwealth Games being
staged in Melbourne, pressure was on
the men’s, women’s and rhythmic teams
to meet their performance targets and
deliver medal winning performances.
The Australian Commonwealth Games
Association had invested significantly
in gymnastics and it is pleasing that
the team contributed 21 medals to the
overall medal tally. Our gold medals
performers were the women’s team,
Josh Jefferis and Chloe Sims in the All
Around competition; Hollie Dykes on
floor; Josh Jefferis on rings; and Damian
Istria on High Bar. These performances
will be remembered by the many
thousands of spectators.
Staging of major events again played
a significant role in national operations
during 2006. The Rod Laver Arena
provided the venue for an extremely
successful gymnastics competition as
part of the Commonwealth Games.
Competition management, led by
Shaun Doyle and supported by Russell
Smart and George Tatai along with
enthusiastic and capable volunteer staff,
are to be congratulated on staging a
first class event which showcased the
sport at the highest level.

The high point of the Commonwealth
Games performances at the beginning
of year was followed by successful
performances at the 2006 Artistic
World Championships in Denmark in
October. Competing against the best
in the world served to reinforce the
international standing of Australian
gymnasts. It is always a special moment
when history is made and Philippe
Rizzo continued his run of “firsts” by
becoming the first Australian gymnast
to win a gold medal at a World
Championship event. His performance,
on the High Bar capped off a successful
World Championships campaign for
both the women’s and men’s teams.
These performances augur well for the
Olympic qualifying events in 2007.
The men’s national high performance
program received a boost with
the appointment of internationally
renowned coach, Vladimir Vatkin as
the Men’s National Coach. This position
will be incorporated into his existing
responsibilities as AIS Head Coach and
is very timely considering the improved
international performances of the men’s
national team.
The Australian Sports Commission, in
collaboration with Gymnastics Australia
(GA) conducted a review of the
women’s national program to identify
ways to further advance the program.
The findings of this extensive review will
be published in 2007.
The gymnastics community experienced
an event of a different nature when the
FIG 125th Anniversary Gala was staged
in Sydney in September. As part of a
worldwide birthday celebration, the
International Gymnastics Federation
(FIG) provided funding to GA to
stage a special Gala on behalf of the
Oceania region. Over 400 participants
were involved in the Gala and
congratulations are extended to the
organising committee and production
team led by Petrina Hutchinson and
Nerine Cooper for delivering a first class
event enjoyed by a large crowd.
The GA Board of Management met six
times during the year with meetings
held in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne,
Adelaide and Perth to promote
communication with State Association
Boards. The Constitution SubCommittee under the leadership
of Chairmen Ken Williamson,
continued their work in drafting a
new constitution to move GA from an
incorporated association to a company
limited by guarantee. It is pleasing to
report at the time of printing the 2006
Annual Report that agreement on a
new Constitution had been reached.
In February 2006, the GA Board
approved a national Information
Technology plan that will underpin
the future operations of GA and the
State Associations. Development of
the plan encompassed two key phases:
upgrading and consolidating the IT
platform underpinning the plan; and
introducing an e-commerce platform
to reduce duplication and open the

way for on-line trading. Two State
Associations will pilot elements of the
plan in 2007.
The development of national resources
continues to impact on the daily
activities of the national office. The
successful implementation and
acceptance by the community of the
on-line education resource “Managing
the Risks of Coaching” set the scene
in 2006 for the task of redeveloping
GA’s education framework to embrace
on-line strategies. Two exciting new
resources for schools and clubs currently
in production are; Gymnastics in
Schools program “Gymskools” and the
skill based club program “GymMIX”.
Both resources will be released in 2007.
Club 10 manager and long standing
staff member Brad Edwards resigned
in July after six years service. GA
acknowledges Brad’s valuable
contribution to the national Club 10
program and wishes him well in his
future endeavours.
Gymnastics Australia returned a surplus
for the 2006 calendar year of $20,726.
This surplus was due in part to strong
control over project expenditure and
income derived from resources and
events. Membership continued to grow
in 2006 and it is pleasing to report that
for the seventh consecutive year, GA
has recorded a 6 per cent growth in
athlete and technical members.
After an extensive tender process
in November, Gymnastics Australia
appointed Jardines Lloyd Thompson as
their national insurance program broker.
GA wishes to thank outgoing broker
Marsh, for their support and service
provided over the past six years.
GA continued to receive support from
the Australian Sports Commission and
the Australian Institute of Sport in
the delivery of development and high
performance programs. In particular,
thanks are extended to ASC consultants
Deb Waser and Don Cameron for their
advice and guidance throughout the
year.
The state high performance network
consisting of QAS, NSWIS, VIS, SASI
and WAIS continue to provide excellent
programs that produce world class
athletes and the excellent results
achieved in 2006 are testament to their
commitment and support.
In late 2006, the Gymnastics WA
farewelled its long standing Executive
Director, Gratton Wilson. Gratton
Wilson worked hard to develop the
sport of gymnastics in WA and his
contributions to the sport overall will be
missed. GA wishes him well in his new
endeavours.

To help achieve Australian Olympic Team objectives, the AOC
provides funding (AOC Funding) to its member National
Federations (NFs), athletes and coaches.

“Official supplier of competition and training attire”
World class competition and training attire is supplied by
Elite Sportswear under their “GK” brand to all Australian
team members in the Olympic gymsports. This ensures that
athletes are provided with world standard leotards and are
presented in the most professional manner.
AOC Funding is derived from income distributions from the
Australian Olympic Foundation, grants from the International
Olympic Committee (IOC), the licensing and sponsorship
activities of the AOC and fundraising by the AOC, State
Olympic Councils and their Corporate Appeal Committees.
AOC Funding for the 2008 Olympic Team preparation is
determined in accordance with its Program and Funding
Guidelines for the 2008 Olympic Games, Beijing (Guidelines).
Specifically, AOC Funding is provided through one of three
programs:
• Australian Youth Olympic Festivals 2005 & 2007 (AYOFs)
• AOC Funding for International Competition
• adidas Medal Incentive Funding

A longstanding sponsor of Gymnastics Australia, Acromat
provides gymnastics equipment for all national and
international events. Without this sponsorship, Gymnastics
Australia could not conduct events as the cost of purchasing
and storing the equipment would be prohibitive.
NACISEY
“Official supplier of Cheerleading uniforms”
Cheerleading uniforms for the national champion teams
each year are supplied by off-shore company, Standard
International Company Ltd under their brand name
“NACISEY”. This sponsorship assists the development of
cheerleading in Australia.

In conjunction with Sportscover, Marsh provided Gymnastics
Australia with a comprehensive national insurance program
for all members and also provides sponsorship for the

MESSAGE FROM THE
AUSTRALIAN SPORTS COMMISSION
The Australian Government is a strong
supporter of Australian sport. The
Australian Sports Commission (ASC) is
the government body that develops,
manages and invests in sport at all
levels in Australia.
The ASC funds and works closely
with a range of national sporting
organisations, state and local
governments, schools and community
bodies to ensure sport is well run
and accessible so that everyone can
participate and enjoy the benefits. The
ASC upholds the integrity of sport
through many innovative programs to
promote ethical sporting practices and
sport free of performance-enhancing
drugs.
During 2005-06, the Australian
Government, through the ASC,
supported Gymnastics Australia
through funding of more than $2.5
million for the development of the
sport and the continued enhancement
at the grass-roots and elite levels,
including the Australian Institute of
Sport Gymnastics program. In addition,
$146,198 in direct athlete support
was provided to Australian gymnasts
in the lead up to the Melbourne 2006
Commonwealth Games.
The Commission increased its funding
support for Gymnastics Australia’s high
performance programs during 2005-06
in recognition of the progress made
by Gymnastics Australia in developing
a high performance system built
on achieving sustainable results at
major benchmark events such as the
Olympics and World Championships.
A special acknowledgement of, and
congratulations to, Philippe Rizzo in
becoming Australia’s first gymnastics
world champion by winning the
high bar, along with Prashanth
Sellathurai, in winning silver on the
pommel horse at the 2006 World
Championships. The Men’s and
Women’s Artistic, and Rhythmic
gymnasts are also to be congratulated
for medal winning performances at
the 2006 Commonwealth Games,
with further acknowledgement of
the Women’s Artistic Team in winning
the 2006 Australian Sports Award
for Young Australian Team of the
Year for their Commonwealth Games
efforts. The ASC extends its best
wishes to those gymnasts striving for
World Championship and Olympic
qualification success in 2007.
The Australian Sports Commission
acknowledges that Gymnastics
Australia has continued to work to
build its membership base and has
provided significant financial support to
its member associations. Gymnastics
Australia has worked in partnership
with, and has been supported by,
the Commission in a number of very
worthwhile programs and initiatives
such as the Coaching and Officiating
Scholarship Program, Women in Sport
Program and through Project CONNECT
to enhance participation opportunities
for athletes with a disability. The
ASC also acknowledges Gymnastics
Australia’s web-based initiatives in the
delivery of its sport, in particular the
Managing Risks for Coaches program.

In 2006 Australia hosted the
Commonwealth Games and it is always
a great honour to be part of a “home”
games as it has special significance
for the athletes to be performing in
front of their family, friends and the
Australian sports mad public. With
this of course comes the pressure
of performing well and all members
of the Commonwealth Games
Gymnastics team can be proud of their
performances and their contribution of
21 medals to the overall team medal
tally between Men’s Artistic, Women’s
Artistic and Rhythmic Gymnastics. The
Australian Commonwealth Games
Association (ACGA) contributed
“Target 2006” funding over three years
to the preparation of this team and
Gymnastics Australia thanks the ACGA
for their outstanding support over this
period.
The Artistic World Championships
in October in Denmark provided
memorable event for Gymnastics
Australia with the Men’s and Women’s
Artistic teams continuing their
outstanding performances. History
was made with Philippe Rizzo winning
Australia’s first gold medal at a World
Championships when he won gold
in a thrilling High Bar apparatus final.
Prashanth Sellathurai took silver in the
Pommel Horse final and the Women’s
team showed the depth of the program
in Australia with a 6th place and two
athletes finishing 5th and 7th respectively
in the All Around final. This was an
outstanding result given injuries to
Monette Russo and Chloe Sims prior
to team selection. The men’s team
continued to show great improvement
with a team result indicating they
will be a real chance of Olympic
team qualification at the 2007 World
Championships.
All results achieved in 2006 by all
gymsports could not have been
possible without the financial support
of the Australian Sports Commission,
Australian Olympic Committee,
Australian Commonwealth Games
Association, Australian Institute of
Sport and the five State Institutes
– QLD Academy of Sport (Men &
Women), NSW Institute of Sport
(Men), Victorian Institute of Sport
(Women), SA Institute of Sport (Men
& Trampoline), WA Institute of Sport
(Women). Gymnastics Australia worked
closely with these partners throughout
the year participating in planning
and performance review meetings
such as the Beijing Athlete Program
(BAP), AIS/SIS/SAS Joint Management
Committees, Target 2006 and GA’s own
Elite Management Committees.
Steps were taken at the end of 2006
to strengthen GA’s High Performance
program with the appointment of
Vladimir Vatkin as the Men’s National
Coach and an ASC review into the
Women’s National Program to identify
ways to further advance the program.
The AOC also commenced its 2008
Olympic team preparation with GA
participating in a planning visit to
Beijing.
The FIG finally presented the new
2006-2008 Code of Points to the
international judging community in
early 2006 with fourteen of Australia’s
best FIG judges across our seven
competitive gymsports participating and
passing the International exams.
The ASC Women in Sport Mentoring
program came to a conclusion in 2006
with Megan Mitchell (QLD), Michelle
Yardley (SA), Tameira McLean (WA) and
Deborah Enderby (VIC) finalising their
three year high performance coaching
apprenticeship. Thanks are extended
to the AIS/SIS/SAS network for their
assistance in mentoring these coaches.
Congratulations also to Martine George
(WA) who completed a 2 year ASC High
Performance Coaching Scholarship and
to Rohan Kennedy (NSW) for receiving
an ASC National Officiating Scholarship
in 2006.
Two joint technical meetings were
held during the year with all Gymsport
Technical Directors and Program
Managers in attendance. A highlight in
2006 was the introduction of the Risk
Management register which has seen
all national SMCs begin to identify and
address risks on an ongoing basis.

DAREN WOLFE - TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
It wouldn’t be an understatement
to describe 2006 as an eventful year
for Australian Men’s Gymnastics. The
pinnacle was undoubtedly the results at
the 2006 Artistic World Championships
in Aarhus (DEN). Philippe Rizzo became
Australia’s first ever Artistic Gymnastics
World Champion by winning the
Horizontal Bar final. Earlier in the event,
Prashanth Sellathurai had completed a
magical routine on the Pommel Horse
to claim Australia’s second ever silver
medal at a World Championships. In
what would turn out to be a week
of firsts, Josh Jefferis finished in 12th
position in the All Around (AA) final
- establishing a new record for Men’s
Gymnastics in Australia, surpassing
the previous highest AA result of 19th.
The Australian men’s team finished
in 14th place - the highest placing by
an Australian men’s team at a World
Championships. Congratulations to the
entire team of Josh Jefferis, Philippe
Rizzo, Prashanth Sellathurai, Sam
Offord, Sam Simpson, Thomas Pichler
and Martin Jozwiak. These gymnasts
(and their results) were supported by
arguably some of the best coaches
in the world – Vladimir Vatkin, Sergei
Chinkar, Xiong Songliang, Yu Bo, and
Igor Bespalov.
The excitement really started back
in March, with the team setting
the scene for things to come at the
Melbourne Commonwealth Games,
where it secured a total of 10 medals
- 3 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze. Three
Commonwealth Champion titles were
secured by Josh Jefferis (All Around and
Rings) and Damian Istria (H/Bar), with
all gymnasts on the Australian team
contributing to a Silver medal in the
team event.
and appreciation is extended to Brian
Wade and his team for the many hours
invested in updating these materials.
Congratulations also to Rohan Kennedy
who received a National Officiating
Scholarship from the ASC in 2006.
Other international event highlights
during the year included a silver medal
on floor, and a bronze medal in the
junior team event at the Pacific Alliance
Championships in Hawaii (USA) in April,
and a silver medal won by Philippe
Rizzo at the World Cup Final in Sao
Paulo (BRA) in December. For the first
time ever, Australia had qualified two
male gymnasts to compete at the World
Cup Final; the second was Prashanth
Sellathurai on Pommel Horse.
In November GA, together with the
AIS, announced the appointment of
Vladimir Vatkin as the National Coach
of the Australian Men’s Gymnastic
team and Senior Coach of the AIS
Men’s Gymnastic program. Vatkin
had been coaching at the AIS Men’s
Gymnastic program since 1997 and is
regarded as one of the world’s leading
coaches. For a number of years, one of
the key strategic goals of the National
MAG SMC has been to secure the
appointment of a national coach, and
it is both satisfying and motivating
that this strategic target has finally
been achieved. It is hoped that this
appointment will be the catalyst for
continuing improvements in the high
performance area of our sport.
All of these results had been
achieved on the new “open ended”
Code of Points, and the first major
competition under the new code
was the Commonwealth Games in
Melbourne. This code presented new
challenges to the entire community
– gymnasts, coaches, spectators, and
certainly judges. A continental judges’
course was held in January, to requalify
FIG judges from Australia and New
Zealand. This course was presented
by Paul Szyjko and Daren Wolfe, and
was supervised by FIG MTC member
Siegfried Funk. 13 Australian judges
successfully gained a FIG brevet for
the 11th Cycle at this course. The
new code also resulted in revisions to
domestic judges’ courses in Australia,

10 years as MAG National Technical
Director. Tim decided to step back from
the NTD role for personal reasons, but

experience, as well as maintaining
stability on both the national selection
committee and the national SMC. The
remaining members of the National
SMC; Kath Graham and Bob Morton,
and National Program Manager Karon
Williams are also thanked for their
contributions and support over the year.
The momentum generated by the
achievements outlined in this report
will continue to foster the sport’s
future growth and success. These
achievements would not have been
possible without the dedication
and commitment of gymnasts,
coaches, judges, and administrators.

WOMEN’S ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS
GYMSPORT REPORT
HELEN COLAGIURI - TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
The Commonwealth Games was a
highlight for Women’s Gymnastics in
2006. The team of Monette Russo,
Chloe Sims, Hollie Dykes, Naomi Russell
and Ashleigh Brennan performed
magnificently in front of a home
crowd to win the 3 Gold medals and
in doing so the team defended the
Commonwealth crown for a third
games in a row. Chloe Sims was
crowned the All Around women’s
champion and Hollie Dykes took out
the floor gold medal. These excellent
results led to the girls being named
as the Young Australian Team of Year
at the 2006 Australian Sports Awards
presented in March 2007.
During the year international gymnasts
also competed at the Pacific Alliance
Championships, World Cup events and
World Championships in Denmark. The
World Championship team of Daria
Joura, Hollie Dykes, Melody Hernandez,
Olivia Vivian, Georgia Bonora and
Karen Nguyen consolidated Australia’s
international ranking as one of the top
nations, with its 6th placing as a team
and with Daria Joura’s 5th place and
Hollie Dykes 7th place in the All Around
respectively. Australia was the only
nation with more than one athlete in
the top 8.
With the introduction of the new Code
of Points, all judges were required to
renew or upgrade their accreditation.
The first course of the year was the
Continental Course for all FIG judges
within the Oceania area. This group
studied extremely hard and produced
excellent results with 34 judges
being awarded their FIG Brevet. The
International Level 6 & 8 and national
courses were also updated and these
courses were presented in every State.
The National Levels Program was
also updated to the new Code with
a national workshop being held in
February with state representatives in
both coaching and judging attending.
Following the Australian Championships
in Melbourne in May, Australian teams
were selected in Levels 7, 8, 9 and
10 to compete in the National Levels
International Challenge in Perth in
September involving teams from New
Zealand and Japan. Gymnastics WA
hosted the event and incorporated it
into their State Titles. GWA’s hospitality
and organisation were appreciated by
all participants.
Women’s Artistic Gymnastics is guided
by the National Sports Management
Committee (SMC) in conjunction with
the Elite Management Committee and
the National Levels Committee. These
committees, along with State SMCs
are instrumental in driving women’s
gymnastics in their respective areas.
The achievements in 2006 would not
have been possible without the hard
work of the gymnasts, coaches, judges,
volunteer committee members and
administrators. Thank you for your
efforts in delivering a successful year for
Women’s Gymnastics.

2006 was an exciting and successful
year for the Rhythmic Gymnastics
community. The Commonwealth
Games was the highlight of the
year and a large spectator audience
witnessed the beauty and grace of
Rhythmic Gymnastics at this event.
The unexpected bronze medal in the
team competition was achieved with
the absence of the 2005 National
Champion, Amy Khera. Unfortunately
Amy had to withdraw due to illness
on the eve of the competition and
was replaced by the reserve gymnast,
Amanda Lee See. The team of Kimberly
Mason, Naazmi Johnston and Amanda
Lee See worked hard to achieve this
excellent result and congratulations
are extended to the gymnasts and to
the Australian coaches Nicole Higham
and Edith Peluso. The individual Silver
and Bronze medals won by Kimberly
Mason in the apparatus finals topped
off an excellent competition. Thanks go
to all who helped in the preparation of
the team and to the event organisers
for staging an event that provided
the opportunity for the gymnasts to
perform in front of a home crowd.
The 2006 Pacific Alliance
Championships were held in Hawaii in
April. Although no team medals were
won by the Senior and Junior Australian
RG teams, the gymnasts did qualify
to compete in a number of apparatus
finals. Individual apparatus medals were
won by Kimberly Mason (Silver) and
Naazmi Johnston (Bronze).
The RG Australian Championships were
held in May in the main arena at the
Sydney Sports Centre. It was an exciting
event for the gymnasts performing on
the competition floor alongside the
MAG gymnasts. New Zealand gymnasts
were invited to compete in the rhythmic
competition and once again they
provided excellent competition for all
Australian gymnasts.
The National Clubs Championships
were once again held in Melbourne
and Gymnastics Victoria is thanked
for its organisation and management
in running a smooth event. The
competition will be held in Perth in
2007 and the Rhythmic community is
excited with this move.
The RG National Program Manual
(NPM) was launched at the end of
2005. At the Sports Program Technical
Assembly in May it was decided that
a Levels Review Committee would be
formed to address the NPM issues that
have been raised by the State SMCs.
The Committee agreed that a rewrite of
the NPM was necessary in order to cater
for the non-elite gymnasts. The new
NPM will be released in January 2007.
Many thanks go to Bridget Thompson
who chaired the committee and to all
state representatives for their time and
effort in reviewing and rewriting the
document.
In the International stream of
competition, the FIG RG Technical
Committee continued to make changes
to the 2005-2008 Code of Points that
altered the playing field for gymnasts,
coaches and judges. Congratulations
to all for their patience and diligence to
learn the changes and implement them
with such enthusiasm.
Many National Squad gymnasts
ventured overseas in the latter part of
the year with the aim of experiencing
more international competitions.
Thanks to the coaches and judges
who were willing to expend their
own money to assist the gymnasts in
achieving their goals.
2006 was a year of retirements. Senior
gymnasts, Amy Khera and Amanda
Lee See along with junior gymnasts,
Emma McCarthy, Olivia Milnes, Danielle
Papadothomakos and Tanya Vulin,
decided to retire from the sport. Thanks
and good wishes for their future
endeavours are extended.
Finally, thanks go to the National Sports
Management Committee members,
Ellena Papas, Jo Edinger, Nicole Higham
and Karon Williams (National Program

The pinnacle event for 2006 was the
special Oceania Gala to celebrate the
125th Anniversary of the FIG. The Gala
was held in Sydney at the end of the
National Gymsport Spectacular and was
an exciting finale for Gymnastics Week.
With over 500 performers from around
Australia, plus representation from New
Zealand, all Gymsports were celebrated
as the audience was taken on a journey
around the world. In addition, cultural
groups, professional musicians and
dancers performed alongside the
gymnastic athletes. The FIG VicePresident Koji Takizawa attended
the FIG Oceania Gala. Many thanks
and congratulations to all involved in
staging such a marvellous event which
highlighted the wonderful talent and
enthusiasm of those within gymnastics.
English Speaking National Evening and
will represent the Oceania Region in the
Closing Ceremony.
Aussie Gymfest was held during the
Gymsport Spectacular with teams
presenting entertaining routines.
Participants were involved in the
National Award night as well as General
Gymnastics Workshops and an outdoor
City Performance. The Aussie Gymfest
is reverting to being held biannually in
the future.
2006 has been another action packed
year for Cheerleading.
With definitive entries completed for
the 2007 World Gymnaestrada in
Dornbirn, Austria, the Australian Team
has been finalised at 172 members,
consisting of athletes, coaches,
chaperones and supporters. Teams are
preparing their involvement in Indoor
and City Performances as well as the

registered GG & KG coaches and
affiliated clubs. The newsletters aim
to provide a link between like-minded
groups.
The first in a series of three new
Kindergym passports was sent out
to clubs which had agreed to the
Kindergym Guiding Principles. The
passports were produced as a result of
feedback received and are an additional
benefit distributed to Kindergym clubs
for their members.
The USA Cheerleading Tour was once
again coordinated by Do It Right (DIR)
Downunder for Australian and New
Zealand teams to travel to Cheer Ltd’s
Canadian American (CANAM) National
Championships in Myrtle Beach, South
Carolina. The Perth Angels (WA) and
Acrobatic Fanatics (QLD) were joined by
2 teams from New Zealand.
Throughout the month of June, a
National Touring Camp was successfully
coordinated by the National SMC. Amy
Spaeth and Justin Weinhold from the
Central Wisconsin Cheerleading Camps
travelled around QLD, NSW, VIC and
WA conducting beginner to advanced
workshops which 367 participants
attended.
The Downunder Spirit Championships
held in July were again a great success
with 337 participants competing from
28 teams from America, New Zealand,
Thailand and Australia (ACT, SA, NSW,
QLD and WA). This was an increase
from last year with 293 participants
from 17 teams. Due to the growth,
the event will move to the Gold Coast
Convention Centre in 2007 and will
also include Sport Aerobics.
Due to the growing interest in
cheerleading in Australia and the need
to further develop cheerleading in line
with international trends, Jane Allen
and Nerine Cooper travelled to the USA
in July to meet with the United States
All Star Federation (USASF) to discuss
the direction of cheerleading and
possible future relations.
The National Championships continued
to grow with 766 entries from 45
teams, an increase from 654 people
from 38 teams in 2005. Karl Olsen,
USASF International Committee Director
attended the National Cheerleading
Championships to observe the event
and was pleased with the standard of
cheerleading and events conducted in
Australia.
BIRTHDAY
CELEBRATIONS:
Clubs and their members
helped celebrate the 125th
Anniversary of the FIG at the
Oceania Gala
in Sydney (AUS).
Russ Blackwell from the US headed
up the National Workshop following
the National Championships and was
assisted by Karl Olsen and Sanford
McMurray. 178 participants joined
in the workshop from 14 clubs from
ACT, NSW, NT, QLD, VIC and WA. 110
participants stayed an additional 2 days
to learn a mass routine coordinated by
Lyn Parker, which was performed at the
prestigious FIG Oceania Gala.
At the September Sports Technical
Assembly, the motion was carried to
follow the USASF level rules in 2007. A
consultative process involving all State
SMCs followed to adopt the level rules
with modifications being made to the
General Rules to suit Australia. The new
rules will involve a new judging system
which will be implemented early in
2007.
Following a successful meeting in
November with the President of the
International Cheerleading Federation
(IFC), Mr Nakamura, Gymnastics
Australia has been accepted as an
associate member of the IFC which
is based in Tokyo, Japan. There are
currently 27 countries affiliated with the
IFC.

2006 was a busy year for the National
Squad athletes with Australian teams
competing in the IAF Suzuki World
Cup in Tokyo (JPN), the FIG World
Championships in Nanjing (CHN)
and the ANAC International Aerobic
Championships in Los Angeles
(USA). The standard of competition
at international events in 2006 was
very high and the Australian athletes
performed to the best of their abilities.
2006 also saw the retirement of long
standing Senior National Squad athletes
Melissa Read, Melissa Davies and Leah
Henville. These 3 WA women have
represented Australia at numerous
competitions during their Sport
Aerobics careers. Their commitment
to the sport has been unwavering and
they have been excellent mentors and
role models to the youth athletes based
in WA.
Liz Lyons, the National Judging
Coordinator, travelled to Hungary in
March 2006 to sit the FIG international
Judges’ Course. Liz successfully
completed the practical and theory
examinations to achieve her Brevet
qualification.
In November 2006 Trudi Nurse (WA
Coach) attended the FIG Level 1
Coaching Academy Course in Korea.
Trudi topped the course passing both
the practical and theory examinations.
She clearly demonstrated her excellent
knowledge of the sport and her
coaching skills to the FIG and the other
course participants.
In April 2006 Karon Williams stepped
down from the Sport Aerobics Program
Manager position to take over the
management of Men’s Artistic and
Rhythmic Gymnastics. Pam Behan was
appointed the Program Manager for
Sport Aerobics on a part time basis.
The AEROSkools Program continues to
provide school-age students with the
opportunity to participate in the sport
and represent their school in state and
national AEROSkools competitions.
The AEROSkools Program is a grass
roots participation program that is
supported by the State Associations and
Gymnastics Australia. The AEROSkools
Kit is a popular resource that is released
at the start of the school year by
Gymnastics Australia. Special thanks
go to Kerryn Cormick and Ellie Bunn
for their efforts in choreographing and
performing the AEROSkools routines for
videoing purposes.
The AEROSkools and the Sport Aerobics
National Championships were part of
the National Gymsport Spectacular held
in Sydney in September 2006. More
than 600 Sport Aerobics athletes from
across Australia competed over the 3
days of competition.
In February training camps for National
and Development Squad athletes
were held in WA, VIC, NSW and QLD.
The athletes received assistance and
feedback in the areas of choreography,
skills, judging and presentation. At the
completion of the training camps the
Selection Committee selected the team
to compete at the 2006 Suzuki World
Cup.
Special thanks must go to the athletes
for their performances in 2006; to the
coaches for preparing the athletes for
competition; to the judges for their time
and effort in judging state and national
events; to the State SMCs for managing
the sport in their state and to the many
volunteers who dedicated their time to
the sport.
Thanks also to the staff at Gymnastics
Australia and all the State Associations
for their guidance, assistance and
support over the past 12 months.

Few could deny that the focus of
sport in Australia in 2006 was the
Commonwealth Games. Melbourne
provided a spectacular backdrop to
a wonderful competition. Even the
weather appeared to be following the
script. Victorians and indeed Australians
should be extremely proud of their
ability to provide first class international
events.
Of course, the one thing that could
have made it that little bit better
would be Trampoline Sports in the
Commonwealth Games. While the goal
of becoming an Olympic sport has been
achieved; there remain mountains to
climb!
Trampoline Sports has not stood still in
2006. In the key areas of membership,
athletes, coaches and judges, it
continues to grow year after year. This
can only be achieved by the ongoing
hard work of everyone involved, but
particularly the clubs. Their tireless work
is the backbone of the sport’s success.
Internationally, for the first time,
Trampoline was involved in the Pacific
Alliance competition in Hawaii, USA;
already a significant event for Men’s,
Women’s and Rhythmic Gymnastics.
This adds another top-level international
event to the calendar.
Australia continued its involvement
in a number of international events.
An indication of even better things
to come was that Australian athletes
placed in the medals for two of the
World Cup series Synchronised events.
Congratulations to Scott Brown and
Ben Wilden for 2nd in Krasnodar
(RUS) in May and 3rd in Savognin
(SUI) in August. The Age-group
athletes competed in both the IndoPacific competition in South Africa
and the Trans-Tasman Trophy in New
Zealand. The international competition
experience is invaluable and proved
that, while other Pacific nations
continue to improve, Australia is able to
produce athletes who are competitive
on the international stage.
Strengthening the relationship with the
hosts of the 2008 Olympics, two groups
participated in training camps in China.
Five athletes from the High Performance
Program spent 10 days at the National
training centre in Tianjin, which also
provided valuable insights leading up to
the Olympics. In November, six coaches
and 14 tumblers trained in Guangzhou
and Shanghai, two of the top training
centres for tumblers in China.
Locally, the Australian Championships
were held in Brisbane in July, providing
a premier event for Age stream
athletes, while the National Clubs
Championships, held in Gosford, NSW,
continues to grow, with over 300
athletes competing in 2006.
The National SMC thanks all the
members of the community who have
contributed to the sport, ensuring
another successful year for Trampoline
Sports. Thanks to all for the energy and
commitment and may there be enough
left in reserve for 2007!

ANDREW SABA - TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
The Sports Acrobatics National SMC
has been continually working to
advance the sport nationally. Coach
and judge education is constantly
under review and updating resources
continues to ensure all states have a
clear understanding of the sport. The
committee is highly focused and strives
to have Sports Acrobatics excel across
the nation.
The World Championships (WC) and
International Age Group Competition
(IAGC) were held in Portugal in
June. Two selection trials for these
competitions were held, one in
Melbourne in late January and the
other in Sydney in late February. Strong
performances were provided by all
Pairs/Groups making team selection
difficult for the selectors.
The FIG released many updates and
clarifications to the Code of Points
throughout the year. This was, in many
cases, helpful in elucidating some
contentious issues. Earlier in the year,
updates to the Tables of Difficulty were
released following requests from many
federations for element evaluations and
as a result some amazing new elements
have evolved, with many used at the
2006 World Championships.
Preceding the WC and IAGC
competitions a National Team training
camp was arranged in Sydney in early
April. Following a structured approach
similar to that of the January Camp,
athletes worked solidly for 3 days to
maximize preparation for these world
competitions. Included were discussions
on competition preparation and a
presentation from ASADA.
The National SMC has also focused on
development of the National Squad and
in January 2006 the first National Squad
Training Camp was instigated. This was
held in Bankstown, Sydney over 3 days
with elite coach Yuriy Stepchenkov,
assisted by elite coach Agnes Sagjal
and coach/FIG Judge Andrew Saba.
This workshop provided the squad with
many hours of structured elite training
and enhanced techniques, aiding
competition readiness.
The WC and IAGC competition covered
about 2 weeks and, as expected,
competition from other federations
was extremely high. Australia was
represented in the Senior Event by 2
Women’s Groups, in the Age Group
12-19 Category by 2 Women’s Groups
and the 11-16 Age Group Category by
2 Women’s Groups and 2 Women’s Pair.
Overall the athletes performed very well
with a strong result in the 12-19 Age
Group Finals by Anne-Marie Mooney,
Mia Romano and Lucia Stevens (NSW)
achieving 6th Place …congratulations!
These events were televised for the first
time and, this being the case, the Pairs/
Groups were directed to perform to the
Superior Jury and television cameras.
This was unexpected and as such
provided a challenge for Judges viewing
performances from the sides. Pamela
Ryan was the assigned Australian Judge
for both events. Pamela has proved
a credit to the team judging upward
of 200 exercises, and as such, is held
in high regard by her peers. A great
technological advancement was the
IRCOS system used by the Chair of
the Judges’ Panel (CJP) and Difficulty
Judges on each panel. This system was
praised by all and certainly reduced the
incidence of inquiries.
The Head Coach for both events
on this tour was Agnes Sagjal. Agi’s
professional approach was admirable.
Overall this tour was successful and we
look forward to 2008 where we strive
to excel.
The Australian Championships were
again held in Sydney at Olympic Park.
This venue has a great atmosphere
and is most appropriate for this event.
The skill levels of all the Pairs/Groups
were certainly an improvement on the
previous year and with the performance
new elements, provided spectators
with many visually stimulating and
spectacular exercises.

BUSINESS & SERVICES REPORT
MATT CONNELL - BUSINESS/SERVICES DIRECTOR
In 2006 the Business and Services unit
delivered a range of programs and
services which continue to underpin
the future development of the sport
and provide valuable benefits to all
members of the gymnastics community.
The speed with which the IT plan
projects have been rolled out is a credit
to the forward thinking, diligence
and tireless efforts of all GA staff
with particular credit extended to Ben
Kerswill and Karen Norden.
In accordance with the strategic
direction of GA, an Information
Technology (IT) plan was formulated
in March 2006. The plan outlines five
key projects, which centre on the
increased use and development of the
sport’s national database (iMIS) and the
provision of e-commerce functionality.
GA has continued to commit resources
and develop strategies to address the
area of risk management within the
sport. The successful implementation
of the Managing the Risks of Coaching
(MRC) resource has clearly shown
the membership’s acceptance of online education tools and this provides
encouragement to GA for the redevelopment of GA’s coach education
framework, in which substantial work
was undertaken throughout 2006.
The first two projects (G-Platform
and G-Transact) were completed
by July 2006, with G-Platform
involving a major upgrade of the
national database. This was followed
by G-Transact, which involved the
development of an e-commerce
platform that has reduced duplication
in data entry and provides the perfect
foundation from which to launch the
balance of projects outlined within the
IT plan.
With the first two projects successfully
implemented within the GA Office,
the potential of the new IT projects
was put to the test with the launch
of the G-Renew project in late 2006.
This project saw a select group of
technical members being provided with
an opportunity to renew their 2007
technical membership on-line. Feedback
to date has been most positive and GA
looks forward to extending this exciting
project to an increased number of
technical members in 2007.
The final two projects (G-Events and
G-Course) will see GA partner with
State Associations to trial on-line
event and coaching course entry. As a
precursor to this exciting development,
GA will first roll out G-Transact
functionality with State Associations, via
a trial to commence in 2007.
Congratulations are extended to
both Trent Lawrie (QLD) and Andrew
Higgins (VIC) who; respectively with
the assistance of GA, were successful
in securing National Coaching and
Officiating Scholarships, in 2006.
Work continued in 2006 on the
development of two exciting new
resources aimed at providing clubs and
their coaches with the tools necessary
to be able to extend their operations
into schools (GYMSkools) and provide
safe and enjoyable fundamental lessons
that contain a mix of activities across all
gymsports (GYMMix). The GYMSkools
program is a web based resource that
will be provided as a benefit to clubs
and their coaches through the Club 10
program, whilst the GYMMix resource
will be released as a DVD and replaces
the current Gym Fun and Gym Skills
resources. Thanks are extended to
Linda Pettit for her continued work
in the development of these exciting
new resources and the education and
services area in general.
The development of a revised Club
10 checklist and associated audit
procedures and resources was another
key highlight in 2006. The Club 10
program continues to play a crucial role
in the ongoing development of clubs
and provides a blueprint for continuous
development and growth. The
promotion of a set of national standards
continues to provide the benchmark
for clubs to reach within the Club 10
program. With the assistance of its
State Associations and, more specifically
their Club 10 Officers, GA aims to assist
all clubs in reaching national standards
(Star 3 accreditation) in the future.
GA acknowledges the leadership
provided by Brad Edwards in his
capacity at Club 10 Manager and the
support provided by Nerine Cooper
in the development of program
initiatives and resources. Brad Edwards
resigned from this position in July
2006; however will not be lost to the
sport as he now joins the Club 10
Audit team. GA wishes Brad well with
his future endeavours and welcomes
Geoff Rietschel to the position of Club
Services Manager.
In late 2006, a sub-committee was
formed to review GA’s National
Insurance program. This included
putting the program to tender,
reviewing tender submissions and
establishing, a revised program for
2007. Following thorough scrutiny JLT
Sport was appointed in October 2006
as the sport’s new insurance broker and,
in conjunction with the sub-committee,
immediately set about establishing a
National Risk Protection program for
2007 that provides increased benefits
and more economical insurance
premiums. Thanks are extended to
Nadine Weight (ACT) and Jane Farrance
(VIC) for their involvement in the subcommittee.

It is extremely pleasing to note the
increases in both athlete and technical
membership in 2006. It is clear that
the sport has successfully capitalised
upon the media attention generated
through both the 2005 World
Gymnastics Championships and the
2006 Melbourne Commonwealth
Games. Whilst club membership
remains unchanged it is pleasing to
see an increasing number of clubs
move through the Club 10 program
and improve their star accreditation
and operations as a result. Thanks
are extended to Ben Kerswill, Rachael
Herdman and Suimai Hare for their
continued work in servicing GA’s
National Membership program.
The Business and Services unit will
continue to drive a range of innovative
projects and programs aimed at
streamlining the sport and looks
forward to taking full advantage of
current advances in technology. GA is
excited about the opportunities that
lie ahead and is well positioned to
capitalise upon these advances and
drive a range of increased benefits and
services to the gymnastics community.

EVENTS REPORT
SHAUN DOYLE - EVENTS DIRECTOR
Following a very busy 2005, the GA
event team started the year conducting
the Commonwealth Games gymnastics
competition in March. With the success
of the World Championships still fresh
in everybody’s mind, the challenge was
to stage another major international
event successfully in Melbourne.
Russell Smart and George Tatai were
seconded to the Commonwealth
Games gymnastics event team to assist
Competition Manager, Shaun Doyle in
the delivery of the event.
Once again the Rod Laver Arena
was the venue for the gymnastics
competition, with excellent crowds
supporting all events. Slava Corn was
the nominated FIG representative to
oversee all aspects of the gymnastics
competition and GA extends its
appreciation for her most valuable
support prior to and throughout the
event.
For the third and final year the
Australian Championships for Men’s
and Women’s Artistic and Rhythmic
Gymnastics were held at the Sydney
Olympic Park Sport Centre in May. For
the first time, within this event, the
second week saw the showcase of both
Men’s Artistic and Rhythmic together
in the competition arena. Although
the venue was ideal for this event, the
Australian Championships struggled
to be embraced by the gymnastics
community in Sydney. A review was
conducted on the event calendar
and a new format for all Australian
Championships will be adopted for
2007.
Trampoline and Rhythmic will become
stand alone Australian Championships
in the July school holidays whilst the
Men’s and Women’s Artistic Australian
Championships will be split into two
events allowing for the seniors to be
showcased in Melbourne in May.
The Annual Awards Dinner continues
to be a success with over 300 athletes,
coaches, judges and officials in
attendance to congratulate all the
2005 National Awards recipients and
to toast the success of the World
Championships. Business Manager,
Matt Connell and his team are to be
congratulated on the professional
presentation of the night.
Following the event, the General
Gymnastics Sports Management
Committee made the decision to stage
the Aussie Gymfest every two years.
This will allow planning to commence
on the possibility of incorporating a
similar event to the 2006 Anniversary
Gala into the event calendar every
two years alternating with the Aussie
Gymfest.
Other events held during the year
were the Trampoline Sports Australian
Championships at the Brisbane
Entertainment Centre (The Sports
Centre) and the Downunder Spirit
Championships for Cheerleading
at the Gold Coast. In 2007, Sport
Aerobics will join Cheerleading in the
Downunder Spirit Championships in an
effort to capitalise on the promotional
opportunities that this event brings
gymnastics.
Finally, thanks are extended to
the National Sports Management
Committees, State Associations,
clubs, judges and volunteers for their
continued support in staging the
national events. GA looks forward
to meeting the challenges the new
event calendar brings in 2007 and
ensuring that the sport continues to
be presented in a most professional
manner.
The final event for 2006 was the
National Gymsport Spectacular held
in Sydney during the September
school holidays. This event involves
Cheerleading, Sport Aerobics, Sports
Acrobatics and the Aussie Gymfest
and continues to grow in popularity,
fast becoming the most successful of
all events. This year saw the inclusion
of the FIG 125th Anniversary Gala into
the National Gymsport Spectacular
program with over 400 athletes having
enormous fun presenting a very
professional show which was enjoyed
by the large audience in attendance.

FIG 125TH ANNIVERSARY
OCEANIA GALA
30TH SEPTEMBER 2006 - SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
As part of worldwide celebrations for their 125th
anniversary, the International Gymnastics Federation
(FIG) requested all continental unions to stage a special
Gala in honour of the occasion. Special funding was
provided by the FIG to assist the organisers to stage a
fitting and memorable celebration.
On behalf of the Oceania region, Gymnastics Australia
staged the 125th FIG Anniversary Gala in Sydney on
September 30, 2006.
The Gala was presented under the theme “a
gymnastics journey around the world” and the show
took the audience on a journey seen through the eyes
of two travellers who travelled the five continental
unions of the FIG to attend a birthday celebration
being held in honour of the FIG 125th Anniversary.
The Gala involved over 400 participants from Australia
and New Zealand. The Oceania region was honoured
to have the FIG Vice President, Koji Takizawa present
at the Gala which was enjoyed by a large audience at
the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre. Gymnastics
Australia on behalf of the Oceania region sincerely
thanks the FIG for their financial support to stage this
memorable event.

TONY DAVIDSON - PRESIDENT
NADINE WEIGHT - EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
2006 brought significant change
to the Australian Capital Territory
government’s Sport and Recreation
department. There have been major
funding cuts in the ACT grants
program and these changes have
had a significant impact on not only
Gymnastics ACT but all sporting bodies
within the ACT.
2006 saw the appointment of Dr Sue
Morton as the new WAG Technical
Director. Sue assumed the role in
February. Nicole Cochrane assumed
the responsibility of heading up the
General Gymnastics Committee; which
looks after both the GG element of the
sport as well as the WAG State stream
gymnasts. Bob Morton continued his
role as the ACT MAG Technical Director
and Kerrin Madden remained as the
Technical Director for Trampoline Sports.
The ACT gymnasts’ performances at
the National Championships were a
major highlights of 2006. Both MAG
and WAG gymnasts had outstanding
performances with Jordan Read
becoming the Level 7 Open National
Champion; Jordan was also selected to
represent Australia in the Trans Tasman
Level 7 Open event.
The Level 7 Open team achieved a silver
medal in the team event. Jacob Davies
was awarded a silver medal in the Level
6/U12 All Around and Takuto Ichihara
was selected as the ACT representative
in the Level 8 Open Trans Tasman event.
In the women’s competition, Melissa
Orr won a silver medal in the Level 7
All Around and was also selected in
the Level 7 Australian team to compete
at the International National Levels
Challenge event that was held in Perth.
The Level 9 women’s team gave an
outstanding performance, winning a
bronze medal in the team event.
The role of Club 10 officer was included
as part of the duties of the Executive
Director. This was based on the size of
the ACT and the committee’s opinion
that this was in the best interests of the
Association and its affiliated clubs.
Congratulations to the committee and
staff of the Woden Valley Gymnastics
Club on achieving Club 10 Star 3
accreditation.

NEW SOUTH WALES
DON BOLLARD - PRESIDENT
AARON BLOOMFIELD - EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
‘An outstanding 2006 in all areas’ was
the phrase used when GNSW was
announced as the ‘2006 NSW Sports
Organisation of the Year’. Here’s how
we did it…
GNSW will partner with an external
provider to implement a schools
based traineeship (Certificate II
in sports coaching) in 2007. The
traineeship combines the existing
coaches’ course with additional units
of correspondence study. Candidates
receive 3 credits towards their HSC and
gain accreditation as a Level 1 coach.
The program can be completed in
addition to a full study load and will
not affect the number of credits that
can be completed at school. A key
benefit is that host clubs will be eligible
for $2,000 in government assistance
payable as a lump sum grant. The
program also covers the cost of the
Level 1 coaches’ course.
GNSW implemented a free ‘Supervisors’
Course’ (adopted from GV), and
conducted a series of risk management
workshops, attended by 43 clubs,
incorporating an automated risk
register. 43 coaches’ courses, 28
judges’ courses, 62 congress sessions
and two course-presenter workshops
were conducted and 11 new coursepresenters commenced training.
An endorsement program for school
providers was developed which
incorporates an automated checklist
enabling its efficient administration.
NSW hopes that the automated
checklist concept will be adopted for
the ongoing refinement of Club 10.
2006 saw 30 state events conducted
and 64 club and regional events
sanctioned via a competition sanction
program (adopted from GQ). Expanded
in 2006 to include training for 25
regional volunteers the program is a key
risk management strategy.
GNSW drafted a comprehensive OHS
Plan, Finance Plan, Working with
Children Policy, Photography Policy,
Grievance Policy, Discipline Policy,
Volunteer Policy and Crisis Management
Plan. Induction documents for teams
and event volunteers were drafted and
workshops were conducted regarding
a bylaw, passed in 2005, which aligns
the duties of officers with the duties of
directors under the Corporations Act.
Huge congratulations to: Philippe Rizzo
(AIS) and Prashanth Sellathurai (NSWIS)
for winning gold and silver at the World
Championships respectively; Prashanth,
Philippe and Kimberly Mason for
returning home with 7 medals from
the Commonwealth Games; the WAG
levels team for winning every team
gold medal at Nationals; the ACR team
for filling every position on the Worlds
Team; the MAG team for winning
every gold medal in U13 and U15 and
occupying 50% of the AYOF team;
the TRP team for winning the state
shield and occupying almost 50% of
the AYOF team; and to the 78 National
Champions that call NSW home.
GNSW purchased a new head office
to house the existing staff plus 2
additional full time and part time
staff; implemented an IP telephone
system and Citrix computer system
to improve workplace flexibility and
implemented a student internship
program and volunteer recruitment
and retention plan to increase access to
volunteer labour. With a 13% increase
in membership and 180% increase
in equity over three years, GNSW has
worked hard to position itself for a
sustainable financial future.
Key to GNSW’s success is the cultural
change within the state office.
Gymnastics boasts very competent,
dedicated and enthusiastic staff with a
can-do attitude. This, when combined
with the support and dedication of the
state Board, SMCs, Regions, Volunteers,
and Members has culminated in
achievements that all members should
be very proud of.

NORTHERN TERRITORY
FRED MARRONE - CHAIRPERSON
The year for Gymnastics Northern
Territory (GNT) commenced with all
clubs striving to do their best and
present gymnastics in a positive manner
to the whole of the Northern Territory.
Since the areas in the NT are quite a
distance from each other it is a big
ask of all clubs. The Association is very
proud of its efforts and commends the
clubs, coaches and gymnasts for their
efforts.
The annual NT Championships were
held in June in Darwin for MAG, WAG,
RG, ACR and CHL with Trampolining
as a display event. This year the NT
invited Wendy Treble from Victoria, an
FIG Judge, to attend as the head of the
judging panel for Sports Acrobatics.
The discipline learnt a lot from Wendy’s
expertise and then, in September, the
gymnasts went on to compete at the
Australian Championships with two
Level 5 Trios and a Level 4 Pair. All
gymnasts performed extremely well and
were ambassadors for the NT. A Team
from Springers Gymnastics represented
the NT for the first time at the
Australian Cheerleading Championships
in Sydney in September, learning a lot
from this experience and hoping to
return again. The Team competed in
Junior Hotshots. Their coach, Lorelei
Brigden was extremely proud of their
performance and the dedication to their
new-found discipline of gymnastics.
An amazing effort from Sophie Budack
saw an NT gymnast invited to join the
AIS program in Canberra. Sophie has
worked extremely hard whilst there
and is now a part of “Team Future”.
Sophie is currently working at Level
8 International and is expected to
compete in Level 10 international at the
end of 2007.
The 2006 AGM was held in September
and a new Board was elected. At the
AGM Gillian Furniss departed and a
new Chairperson Fred Marrone, was
elected. Fred brings to the Board a
wealth of knowledge from being on
boards of local businesses, government
departments and other sporting bodies.
The election of the new Board has
brought a new and positive direction
for the NT.
One of the decisions of the new
Board was to make the position
of Development Officer for the NT
redundant. Instead, GNT has made
that job into two positions so the
Association can better service the needs
of the clubs and the sport as a whole.
Early 2007 should see the position of
Promotions and Projects Officer filled.
This will be the person responsible
for dealing with Club 10 for the NT.
The second position is the Gym In
Schools Officer so the sport can be
better promoted throughout the wider
community.
GNT is looking at a very bright
and positive future for the sport of
gymnastics in 2007.

QUEENSLAND
KEN MATHERS - PRESIDENT
WAYNE HILL - EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
2007 is the third year into the Board’s
4 year Strategic Plan, which is the basis
of all activities within the operations of
Gymnastics Queensland (GQ), and our
7 Sport Management Committees.
Gymnastics Queensland now has
27,370 registered members, an increase
of 9.2% over 2005, and 23.7%
over 2004. Technical membership
has maintained its growth rate at
8% per annum and now stands at
711 members. GQ convened 77
Education courses for 908 participants.
The acceptance of the Club 10
program is one of the major factors
in improvements in club governance,
risk management and health and
safety. The positive and measurable
result has seen a marked reduction in
public liability insurance premiums.
Throughout 2006 GQ undertook 7 trips
to Far North Queensland working with
children in remote areas.
In 2006, GQ conducted 64 events
throughout the State for 7,205
participants, GQ again hosted the
National Trampoline Championships at
Boondall, and an extremely successful
Junior State Championships and WAG
National Club Championships at
Caloundra where International WAG
gymnasts trialled for a place in the
World Championship Team with 800
other gymnasts from around Australia.
The success of the General Gymnastics
event in November reinforced the
view that participation events must be
conducted alongside competitive events
over future years.
GQ’s efforts to always be at the cutting
edge of developing our sport.
These events served well to showcase
the gymsports in spectacular fashion
with media coverage to match. Worthy
of note is the publicity the participation
element of gymnastics has been
receiving. The health and life skills
taught through gymnastics are finally
being recognised.
GQ has a balanced Board that is
providing clear strategic direction,
leadership and innovation. The financial
position continues to improve as does
the quality and contribution of the staff
team enabling a focus on providing
improved services to the membership.
State Squads were introduced by TRP,
RG and AER throughout 2006, in
addition to MAG and WAG. GQ thanks
and acknowledges the support of the
Queensland Government through
Sport and Recreation Queensland
(SRQ) and the Queensland Academy of
Sport (QAS) and, of course the SMCs
and volunteers for their tireless work
throughout the year.
The performance of GQ’s athletes in
the international arena was testament
to the many years of effort put into
the High Performance programs.
Queenslanders comprised over 50% of
the Australian Commonwealth Games
team and GQ Officials also maintained
an extremely high standard on the
international arena.
GQ’s special initiative program Active
Bods continued to grow both in
performance and stature during 2006.
The Active Bods program is designed
to create the future for gymnastics by
improving the calibre of young coaches
by providing exciting, well scripted
and choreographed lesson plans;
creating employment opportunities
for coaches during club down-time;
and taking gymnastics into schools to
teach children the benefits of physical
activity, a love for sport and a healthy
well-balanced lifestyle, which will
help to combat obesity and generate
self-confidence. The 2006 Coaching
Congress continues to play a key role in

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

PHIL SINNOTT/HAYDN BELLAMY - STATE ADMINISTRATOR
2006 saw gymnastics in South Australia
maintain its steady growth in the range
of gymsports it manages. Initiatives
and programs designed to increase
participation and enjoyment are coming
to fruition and 2007 looks to be an
exciting and challenging year.
The GSA Board and staff thanks with
gratitude all SMC members, club
coaches, administrators, volunteers and
athletes who have offered their time,
experience and resources to all the
competitions and activities that run in
2006.
In mid 2006 Haydn Bellamy was
appointed as State Administrator.
He replaced Phil Sinnott who has
taken up a similar position at Squash
SA. Although Haydn’s background
is not in gymnastics, he has made,
and continues to make, valuable
assessments and contributions to the
smooth running of gymnastics in South
Australia.
2006 saw good results from all South
Australian levels and elite gymnasts
during state, national and international
competitions. Special congratulations
are extended to Sam Offord (MAG)
for his team effort and contribution
at the World Championships and for
his recognition award at the SASI
2006 Annual awards. Congratulations
also to Ben Wilden and Scott Brown
for their achievements at the Men’s
Synchronised Trampoline World Cup
in Krasnodar (RUS) in May and also
Alexandra Freeman for her placing
at the Savognin World Cup (SUI) in
August.
The Aerial Program was launched in
partnership with the South Australian
Sports Institute during 2006. The
primary objective of the program is to
increase participation in elite pathways
by conducting a grass roots level
program that will deliver athletes into
the elite pathways of the 3 aerial sports
– Men’s Gymnastics, Trampoline and
Diving. This is being achieved with
the recent appointment of an Aerial
Specialist coach.
With the support of the Office of
Recreation and Sport, GSA set up
a new inclusive program called
“GymAbility”. The program will provide
people with all ranges of disability
and special needs the opportunity to
learn and participate in gymnastics
that will give them valuable skills for
this and other sports in a safe and
enjoyable environment. With the recent
appointment of a Disabilities Officer,
increased participation and inclusion of
people with disabilites in our sport is
anticipated.
General Gymnastics saw the first
Recreational Team Challenge
competition. Over 250 participants from
the South Australian general gymnastics
community took part, which bodes well
for building on its success in 2007.
Club 10 has continued to be a key
focus for GSA, which has employed
another staff member to assist with the
workload of the Club 10/ Education
Officer. Many clubs are working
through and towards the Star 3
checklist to enable them to establish
principles of good practice and also to
meet Gymnastics Australia’s national
standards.
Club visits and communications were
and continue to be a key focus for the
Club 10 development staff with more
clubs anticipated to meet the national
standards.
Gymnastics South Australia thanks all
the staff who continue to administer
the sport in the core areas of club and
membership services, participation and
development, high performance and
events.
Finally, GSA would sincerely like to
thank the Office for Recreation and
Sport, South Australian Sports Institute,
Acromat and all corporate sponsors for
their continued and valuable financial
and in-kind support throughout 2006.

TASMANIA
MARK MONCUR - PRESIDENT
2006 saw some big changes for
Gymnastics Tasmania (GT), with a
new look Board being elected, and a
charter to effect change for GT’s future
advancement.
Financially the Association made a
profit in 2006, after two years of losses.
Outstanding debts have been reduced
and overall registrations have shown a
steady increase.
Trampoline Sports in Tasmania has
continued its strong development, with
athletes performing well at national and
international events. Congratulations
to the dedicated volunteers who
have been responsible for improving
performances.
Thanks are extended to Gaylene
King, Office Administrator, for
her outstanding efforts with the
administration of the Association. GT’s
policies and procedures are continuing
to be reviewed and updated.
Work towards a state gymnastics facility
has progressed well, with the State
government adding a further $1million
dollars to the Federal government’s
$1million commitment to the project.
Work with Kingborough council for the
remaining funds and site location for
the project continues. The proposed
facility will provide for Tasmania’s top
gymnasts and also for all levels of
gymnastics with a purpose-built early
learning centre.
Nicole Colev, the Club 10 Officer has
been working hard communicating and
assisting clubs. Nicole has also been
responsible for implementing new
policies and procedures in the office.
With the help of Nicole, Tasmania had
its first club, Kingborough, achieve
a Star 5 rating, one of only 7 clubs
Australia-wide to attain this status.
2006 has been a good year for
Gymnastics Tasmania. The Gymnastics
Tasmania Board, sports management
committees, members, volunteers and
staff have all worked tirelessly during
the year.

increased its membership for the 6th
consecutive year.
After 18 years at the helm, Geoff
Sussman resigned as President of
Gymnastics Victoria. Geoff’s resignation
is the end of an era and he will be
greatly missed. The achievements of
Victoria under his leadership were
nothing short of spectacular. Stephen
Moorhouse, Treasurer, also resigned
his position during the year. A further
loss was that of Karen Norden, Office
Manager, who stepped across to
Gymnastics Australia after six years with
Victoria.
The Commonwealth Games in
Melbourne was the major focus for
Victoria in 2006. Congratulations to
all team members particularly to the
Victorian gymnasts, Ashleigh Brennan,
Monette Russo and Amy Khera,
and to the army of volunteers who
ensured the event was a success. An
additional legacy from the Games was
a government grant of equipment to
the HPC, which, in turn, distributed
the replaced equipment to deserving
clubs. Eleven clubs benefited from
this program. To increase the profile of
events, the MAG State Championships
were held at the State Netball & Hockey
Centre, a very exciting venue, and
further such events are planned.
The Board made the very difficult
decision to close the RG HPP program
at the end of 2006. The parents of the
gymnasts in the program are in the
process of setting up an International
Stream RG club which will operate
out of the existing venue at the State
Gymnastics Centre.
Gymnastics Victoria produced two
safety brochures in partnership with
the Victorian Government initiative
Smartplay, for both traditional
gymnastics and trampoline sports.
These are available for clubs to
distribute.
Club 10 and club services are key
priorities for Victoria and many
development programs are based
on the Club 10 framework. Victoria
has 18% of clubs at Star 3 or above.
Greater effort will to be taken to bring
this percentage up to 50% or more.
GV’s partners and supporters,
particularly the Victorian Institute of
Sport, Sport and Recreation, VicHealth,
VicSport, and Swinburne University
of Technology maintained close links
and their continued support is greatly
appreciated.
Gymnastics Victoria has concluded
another successful year which was only
made possible by the hard work and
commitment of the Board, SMCs, staff,
volunteers and club members.

WESTERN AUSTRALILA

2006 was another positive year
for Gymnastics Western Australia
(GWA), with continued growth and
new challenges met. The gymnastic
community has seen continued support
from its major partners the Department
of Sport and Recreation and Healthway,
and the exciting news that in-principle
the new State Gymnastic venue located
at Loftus Recreation Centre in North
Perth will be built commencing in
March 2007.
From a staffing perspective GWA was
saddened to lose three invaluable
staff members: Marie Pudelek (Sports
Manager), Jane Collins (Educaiton
Officer) and Gratton Wilson (Executive
Director). GWA thanks each of them
for their contribution. Gratton Wilson
left gymnastics after ten years of
employment and was presented with an
Award of Merit for his service to GWA.
GWA welcomed Robyn Kuhl as the
new Executive Director, Ann Raneri
(Sports Manager) and Suzie Brown
(Receptionist / Administration support).
Jo Hammond has moved into the
position of Education Officer. GWA also
thanks Richard Edinger, who resigned
in late 2006, for his service to the GWA
Board.
GWA saw increased athlete registrations
in 2006. The three Optional
Spectaculars saw a total attendance of
1300 competitors; an excellent result.
The following oustanding results were
achieved in 2006:-
WAG HPC – Daria Joura competed
in the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World
Championship in Aarhus (DEN) and
achieved 5th AA. Olivia Vivian was also
in the Australian team that placed 6th.
WAG International Levels Challenge
was run in conjunction with the
GWA State Championships attracting
teams from Japan and New Zealand.
Representatives in the Australian Levels
Team were Brittany Choy and Corrie
Keating.
Sports Aerobics – athletes competed in
the ANAC International in Los Angeles
in July, with Kieran Gorman winning
a bronze medal in the individual male
division.
Cheerleading – Perth Angels (Fit to
Cheer) won the Australian National
Championships (Open division) in
Sydney in September and was the first
Australian team to compete at the
World Championships.
Acro – the Men’s Group achieved a
first place at the Nationals, the Level 8
Mixed Pair a silver, and Level 4 Trio a
bronze.
MAG HPC made two trips to Russia:
a training camp in July and again in
December for the Voronin Cup.
Martin Jozwiak was the travelling
reserve for the Men’s World Team.
RG – teams attended Lemesia
International Tournament in Cyprus and
the Serdang Angel Cup in Malaysia.
Western Australian athletes also
achieved excellent results with the
Junior National Champion being Chloe
Hayes, Level 10 National Champion
Kate Dolan and Level 9 National
Champion Kelsey Brewer.
2006 saw GWA with 51 clubs, 4
Associations and 9364 registered
members, an increase from 2005. The
Club 10 program continues to have an
impact on the day to day operations
of all clubs and associations within
Western Australia. The end of 2006
saw the closure of two clubs, Busselton
Gymnastics and Grove Gymnastics
that had provided the gymnastics
community with long service. These
club owners, Jenny Couch and
Florence & Don McCallum, each
received an Award of Recognition in
acknowledgement of their service.
In closing, a special thank you to
the many volunteers, staff, Regional
Associations, Board and Committee
members for their tireless and dedicated
work throughout 2006.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL REPORTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2006
THESE NOTES SHOULD BE READ IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
Statement of Accounting Policies
Club Development Fund
The accounts of this entity (which is a ‘non-reporting’
entity) have been prepared in accordance with applicable
Accounting Standards.
Results for Year
GA has a special Cash Management account created on the
formation of the Club Development Fund. These funds were
received as the result of a club donation and have been set
aside to support the annual Club 10 Development Grant
scheme.
Gymnastics Australia (GA) made a profit of $20,726 for the
year (2005– $540,139).
All Current Liabilities have been reviewed and reflect all
known liabilities of GA.
Short Term Investments at Cost are Fixed Interest Hybrids
listed on the Stock Exchange the market value of which was
$1,064,828 at 31st December 2006.
Income Tax
GA is exempt from Income Tax.
The Furniture, Fittings and Equipment have been valued
at cost less an appropriate provision for depreciation based
on the remaining useful life of each asset.
The Trade Debtors have been reviewed and in the opinion
of management are all recoverable in the normal course of
business.
Stock on Hand has been reviewed and re-valued to the
lower of cost or net realisable value. The net result of this is
a write down of $9,245 (2005 $22,393) that is reflected in
the trading gross profit. This stock represents items held for
resale at the GA office.
Work in Progress (projects) has been reviewed and
is valued at cost. It is believed the value shown is fully
recoverable on completion of the various projects in 2007.
Government Grant and Sponsorship monies received in
2006 that will be expended in 2007 are included as current
liabilities on the basis that these funds would be refundable
in the event that they were not expended in the manner for
which they were provided.
Employee Benefits
Provision has been made for Long Service Leave and Annual
Leave in accordance with statutory obligations.
Economic Dependency
GA is substantially reliant on appropriations of funds from
the Australian Sports Commission to fund current levels of
operation.
Constitution
The Australian Gymnastic Federation Inc trading as
Gymnastics Australia is an association incorporated under the
Associations Incorporations Act of the ACT on 14th August
1981, Registered Number A827.
In accordance with a resolution of the Board,
in our opinion the accompanying financial statements of Gymnastics Australia:
(a) show fairly the operating result of GA for the year ending 31st December 2006 and
(b) show fairly the financial position of GA as at 31st December 2006.
No matters or circumstances have arisen since the end of the financial year that have adversely affected or may adversely
affect the operations or results of GA in financial years subsequent to the 2006 financial year. Notice is given that on February
17, 2007 the members of Gymnastics Australia voted to change from an Incorporated Association to a Company limited by
guarantee.
