Having been around racing for over 20 years, I thought it only natural when it came time that our son wanted to start racing go-karts that I would attend all of his races, pack snacks and make sure we had everything from Band-Aids to Sunscreen, sit in the stands and cheer with all the other Moms. Our son decided he wanted to race go-karts and we bought him his first kart when he was 4 years old. I figured going to kart races would be like all of the other racing events I had been to in the past. When he raced kid karts there was a great group of Moms, each of us would cheer the entire kid kart field, trying to keep our little drivers awake for their heat races and main events that sometimes wouldn’t start until after 10pm; way past a typical 5 year olds bedtime. We would bring and share snacks, share magazines and make sure the Dad’s and kids stayed hydrated, fed, and semi-clean; the latter being almost impossible. Part of my job at the track is just staying out of the way. I have learned the hard way, where not to stand on pre-grid so that you don’t get run over. I have learned to keep my distance after each session so that the boys can talk and debrief on handling and track conditions. But I have also learned when to step in and diffuse the situation when Father and teen-age son have one of those “why aren’t you 20 GO Racing Magazine listening to me” moments. I have learned to make checklists; one time was enough to have arrived at the track having forgotten an all important tool or piece of equipment. We check the list when we load up and again before we leave the house. I try to make a habit to go through the gear bag after a race weekend, that way there is plenty of time to repair, replace and clean anything before the next event; has a glove worn a hole in it, are shoes still in good condition, does everything still fit? This is also a good time to air out the gear bag (yes, that bag can begin to smell like a boys locker room very quickly) open up and air out the helmet and shoes, wash suits, undergarments and balaclavas (I will share some suit cleaning tips in the future) in addition I try to make sure we check the gear bag again at least a week before a race weekend, making sure everything that was washed and aired out made its way back into the bag. It seems that as soon as we have everything packed and are at the track, the day comes to an end and it is time to come home and go thru everything to prepare for the next practice day or race. There aren’t many other places I would rather be than at the racetrack. Some great memories have been made at the track as a family and I look forward to many more! Oh and if you are wondering, I have never sat in the stands to watch any of my son’s races, you can find me amongst the Dad’s with my camera and a stop-watch! GoRacing Magazine is excited to be able to bring our readers a monthly article from Ryon Beachner of 2 Wild Karting. This month we will talk about keeping your kart clean, stay tuned for future stories on fitness, chassis set-up, driver coaching and more. Preparation like a complete disaster in 6 months, and when it’s time to get new When people talk about success, and their different ideas as equipment you will find that you can ask a much better price. Before to what it takes to win races, what first comes to mind? Chassis? we begin, here is a quick list of things you’re going to need to get Engines? Practice? It comes as no surprise to any of us that in order clean your kart efficiently. to put together even a half way decent result you’re going to need all three. However things aren’t like they were in the old days, rules have become more stringent, restrictions and single make engine classes such as Rotax, and Stock Honda dominate the Karting landscape here in the US. Where else can we look to find an advantage when such parity exists? It is an absolute given that in this scenario a driver and his team must be very familiar with his equipment. We must look off track to set ourselves apart from our competitors. As the old saying goes, “failure to prepare is preparing to fail”. So let’s take a closer look at how to prepare your chassis for the race! After you have arrived home from a race your kart is most likely not ready to go back to the track despite what you may think. At the absolute minimum, it requires a good thorough cleaning. Although it may not look dirty, routine cleaning will prevent it from looking 24 GO Racing Magazine Necessities: 1. Disposable rags, or shop towels 2. Cleaners: Simple Green, WD-40, Unmixed, or Mixed Fuel 3. The basic hand tools you take to the track 4. A 5 gallon bucket and small plastic bowl 5. Variety of paint brushes you don’t plan to use again 6. Motul Shine & Go, or Maxima SC-1 7. Rubber gloves 8. 220 grit sand paper entire axle assembly by simply removing the bolts that fasten the bearing cassettes to the chassis and carefully pulling up. You should now be left with a kart that is missing basically everything except a seat, floor pan, and steering components. Pour a generous amount of fuel into your five-gallon bucket, and get a medium sized brush out. You are now going to go dip your brush into the fuel and begin going over the frame making sure to hold your bucket below it as to not make a mess We will begin by essentially stripping of your work area, and to catch whatever the chassis down to the frame. You will particulates may drip off with the fuel. undoubtedly find a few things that you Whenever you feel your brush or the might not have noticed otherwise during surface you’re cleaning is getting dry, dip this process. Start by removing all of the the brush back into the fuel and continue bodywork and fuel tank, this will allow you cleaning. Note: Do not use the fuel to clean to make quick work of removing the engine, any plastics or non-metal parts. cooling system and whatever electronics Take all of your springs, fasteners, and may be present. Once these things are other hardware and set them aside in your out of the way, you can now remove the small bowl, and fill it with fuel as well to soak while you continue working on another area. Occasionally agitate them by stirring a brush around in the bowl. Once you go to reassemble your kart, you should find things looking clean and bright once more! Fuel is an excellent solvent and will typically make quick work of whatever built up old chain lube, grease and grime you may encounter, without harming anything along the way. For the hard to reach places, bolt holes, slots and etc, it is especially useful to use a smaller brush, we use some that are about the size of a normal pencil. With the chassis clean, now is the perfect time to inspect for cracks in any of the rails. Begin by checking the seat uprights, the area the engine sits, and the lower steering column support, as these are the most common areas for failure. Then hose the entire frame down with Shine & Go, and wipe it down once more to remove excess. Once complete, move on to cleaning the plastics. GO Racing Magazine 25 TRACK TALK Plastics are simple, spray a healthy amount of Simple Green on the bare plastic part, and rub it around, then wipe away the dirt and contaminates that have been lifted from the pores of the plastic. Never use brake clean, or parts wash on the plastics as this will almost ‘melt’ the surface making it nearly impossible to clean in the future. For the surfaces that have been covered with graphics, spray these with WD-40. This should remove minor rubber marks, bug splatters, and loosen any other stains picked up on track. Once clean, hose the entire pod off with your Shine & Go, and set it aside while you clean the other plastics, once done, wipe everything off and things should have that brand new gloss restored, this also prevents new junk from sticking, making your next cleaning much quicker. For the axle assembly, WD-40 can be used on just about everything except the brake rotor (duh). You should remove the bearing carriers, rotor, and sprocket carrier from the axle to speed the process along. Inspect the face of the bearing to check for damage to the shields, give the bearings a spin, if the bearings are noisy or ‘crunchy’ consider replacing them. When reinstalling the axle assembly, bolt each bearing carrier in place individually, otherwise you will have to awkwardly try to balance the axle assembly as you lower it into place and then attempt to line up all the threaded holes in the bearing carriers with the correct ride height position. Before sliding the axle in, take a small file and smooth over the areas that the set screws have bit into, once the axle is in, simply line up your set screw marks with the threaded holes in the bearings so you don’t have to bother measuring each side to determine center. To restore the axle to looking new, get a small strip of 220 Grit sand paper, wrap it around the axle and spin the axle, this will remove surface rust, and make the surface of the axle look even and uniform without putting scratch marks in it. If you encounter rust that is more difficult to remove, try applying a light oil to the surface and repeating this process until you’ve reached a satisfactory result. Once you’ve reassembled the kart completely, spray a generous amount of WD-40 on a rag, and wipe down any untreated steel surface such as the axle, or exhaust system to prevent rust and corrosion from forming on the surface. As you reassemble the kart, pay close attention to the hardware you’re using, if you see any bolts that have suspect looking threads, replace them. If you have wheel nuts that spin on to the studs freely, it is time to replace them. Nothing can interrupt a productive day of testing like a stripped thread, or rounded off bolt, and keeping good hardware is cheap insurance against this. 26 GO Racing Magazine Lochie Hughes On His Way To Winning TaG Cadet COVER STORY Orlando FLORIDA WINTER TOUR It was a gorgeous, sunny and warm Sunday for the final round of the 2014 Formula Kart Productions Florida Winter Tour, presented by Ocala Gran Prix, Formula Kart Racing Championship. At stake were eight FWT Formula Kart Racing drivers’ points championships for the Briggs, TaG and Shifter Kart competitors, and cash and prizes valued at over $61,000. Words: FWT | Photos: Studio 52 I t’s been an amazing season of Formula Kart competition and, as Formula Kart Productions owner Bill Wright so aptly proclaimed over the PA as the last checkered flag was thrown, a bitter sweet end to a solid Formula Kart Racing season. Bitter that is had to eventually end, but sweet when looking back at all the great action we’ve seen through the six rounds of intense “FK” competition. One could say it was doubly sweet when looking at the future and seeing where the FWT’s Formula Kart Racing Championship is headed. In 2014 Formula Kart Productions has once again seen double-digit-percentage growth in the “FK” Championship, with 190 drivers, representing more than 680 entries, taking part. The growth is further highlighted by a significant increase in International competitors. And it should be noted that the final round of the Championship equaled the entry numbers of the first round, a clear testament to the growing interest in the FWT “FK” Championship. Two of the biggest factors in the resurgence of the Formula Kart Racing Championship were the addition of the cost-effective Briggs LO206 classes and the return, in force, of the shifter kart classes. One competitor who came to compete in the Formula Masters Shifter class is Petr Ptacek. Petr hails from Prague in the Czech Republic and is better known as “Mr. Praga”, the owner of the Praga manufacturing company. Petr is justifiably proud of his company’s history and was quick to point out that Praga’s roots as a Czech car company go back before World War II, and it’s manufacturing heritage dates all the way back to the turn of the 20th century. He says that in the eight years he has owned the company there have been many great achievements. One such achievement was having Praga, as well as their other chassis, OK1, selected as two of the official chassis at last year’s Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals. When asked why he decided to race at the Florida Winter Tour Petr said that the FWT is known around the world as a very reputable series, so he really wanted to come here with his son, Petr jr. and race. Plus, as he added with a grin, “in the Czech Republic right now it is very cold, so why not come race where it’s warm and sunny?” By spending just a bit of time in the Praga pits it’s very evident that Petr is very well-liked and respected among his staff. In fact, the general vibe is that of a family that is very serious about what they do, but know how to have fun while doing it. We hope to see Petr Ptacek, his family, and the rest of the Praga crew around the Florida Winter Tour for many years to come. MG Tires / Granja 500 Award During the Championship Sunday lunch break a drawing was held GO Racing Magazine 29 COVER STORY Victory Kart / Briggs and Stratton sponsored Senior grid for all eligible FK participants to determine who would get to represent the Florida Winter Tour at this year’s Granja 500 karting endurance race, held annually in Brasil. Eligible participants had their name drawn and the lucky winner was Masters Shifter pilot Farshad Bagheri. Farshad will receive and all-expense paid trip to Brasil to compete in the famous race that so many are talking about. We couldn’t think of a better guy to win a prize like this and we wish him all the best as he travels to South America later this year to represent the FWT. This once-in-a-lifetime award is exclusive to the FK Championship, and is provided by MG Tires, the official tire of the FWT Formula Kart Racing Championship. With today being Championship Sunday for the Formula Kart series the drivers and crews were more eager than ever to get everything just right. For those that still had a shot at one of the various titles everything had to be just right. Let’s take a look and see how the drivers fared. Victory Kart / Briggs and Stratton sponsored Briggs LO206 Junior The first class out of the gate was the Briggs LO206 Junior class. Canadian Roman DeAngelis picked up where he left off Saturday by claiming the Koene USA P1 Pole Position Award with a lap of 1:05.920 30 GO Racing Magazine seconds. After qualifying, Roman decided to sit out the day’s competition as he concentrated his efforts on his TaG Junior kart. This left the door open to the other competitors and taking advantage of that in Heat #1 was Tyler Bouillon (Canada) who ran away with the win. In Heat #2, Hunter Fox (USA) would lead at the end of 10 laps to take his first heat win. In the final, Fox got out to an early lead while Bouillon and Logan Cusson (Canada) circulated a couple second behind, just ahead of Jonathan Morris (USA) in fourth. For a while Bouillon and Cusson worked together in such a way that they almost got right to Fox’s bumper. But, with a couple laps to go, all three slid together through turn nine, almost crashing, and that separated them just enough that Fox had the gap he needed to run clean until the checkers waved. At the line the top three were right together, with Fox winning, followed by Bouillon in second and Cusson in third. Victory Kart / Briggs and Stratton sponsored Briggs LO206 Senior & Masters When the Briggs Senior and Masters Briggs competitors went out to qualify Chad Campbell (Canada) was determined to grab the P1 Pole Position award and that’s just what he did with a lap of 1:03.518 seconds. Campbell would use that advantage going into Heat #1 but in that race, it was Saturday’s winner Johnny Flute who would emerge victorious. Heat #2 saw Flute once again running up front but in the end the win went to Collin Daley Jr. (Jamaica), who would capture the win by less than two tenths of a second over Flute. In the final it was Flute who would start from the top spot but suffered tough luck just two laps into the race when his exhaust pipe broke and he couldn’t continue. Daley was ready and waiting to claim the race as his, but Campbell and William Lalonde (Canada) were right on his tail and not about to let him get away. As the race wore on Daley held the point, but it was Lalonde asserting himself into second with Christopher Proietto (Canada) breaking into a podium spot in third. At the finish, that’s how the order would remain. On the podium Collin Daley was awarded $250 for winning the Briggs Senior class by Victory Karts Blake Deister. Finishing fourth in the Sunday final and third in the Championship was Haley Morris (USA), who might have lost the daily podium battle, but possibly won the war. As the highest finisher on a Victory kart chassis on Sunday she won $250. By passing the most competitors in the race she picked up an additional $100 as the Briggs and Stratton Hard Charger Award winner. And as the highest placing Victory Kart driver in the point’s championship she was awarded a complete Victory Kart chassis. You have to admit, to spend a fun day racing in the beautiful sunshine and going home with an extra $350 and a brand new kart chassis is pretty sweet. Congrats to Haley! AM Racing Kart sponsored Formula TaG Cadet Thirty five of the world’s best TaG Cadet Competitors took to the track for their eight minute qualifying session and everyone could tell immediately that they meant business. With the draft being so important on the long back-straight the qualifying session looked like a race with no one giving any quarter. In the end two drivers broke the one minute barrier with Gianluca Petecof (Brasil) edging out Lachlan DeFrancesco (USA/Canada) by just 0.019 of a second, 59.854 to 59.773. Heat #1 saw Petecof take the win ahead of DeFrancesco with Reece Gold (USA) in third. Heat #2 saw Lochie Hughes (Australia) take the win over a tight four-way battle for second that included Petecof, Michael d’Orlando (USA), DeFrancesco and Gold. As the TaG cadet Final got underway Petecof assumed the lead while Hughes tucked in behind him with DeFrancesco and d’Orlando in striking distance. Behind the lead four Reece Gold led a pack that was looking to make up ground. Eventually Gold and Dylan Tavella (USA) would break away from that pack and catch d’Orlando and DeFrancesco as Petecof and Hughes were making the lead battle a two-kart affair. Lap-after-lap the front two stayed in lock step with the Brasilian leading the Australian. They worked together to pull out a five second lead over the drivers fighting over the last podium spot. As they took the white flag Lochie Hughes was locked onto Petecof’s rear bumper, planning his way by. The moment he was planning for was on the last turn of the last lap. When the moment came the Australian executed his run perfectly, with a clean pass on the left. As the two exited the left hander Petecof was able to pull alongside Hughes, but the run to the line has a long right-hand bend, and Hughes right-side position gave him a shorter run to the finish line, and the victory. It was a thrilling end to a great race. However, after the checkers Petecof intentionally slammed into Hughes on the cool down lap, severely damaging the winners kart, earning Petecof the disdain of the viewing audience and an immediate disqualification. This then made the battle behind those two a race for second and that would be won by Michael d’Orlando while Dylan Tavella just nipped Reece Gold at the line by 0.050 of a second to claim the last podium spot. Moto Bordogna Engines sponsored Formula Open Shifter | International Racing USA sponsored Formula Stock Moto | Decal Zone sponsored Formula Masters Shifter Three classes of shifter karts hit the track for their qualifying session. Coming out with the overall honors was Collin Daley jr. who claimed pole position in his Open Shifter with a lap of 50.855 . Second fastest time went to another Open Shifter, Max Di Bella (USA) while third fastest went to Stock Moto competitor Jordon LennoxLamb (UK). Rounding out the top four fastest times was Ariel Castro representing the Masters Shifter class. Heat #1 witnessed Collin Daley jr. and Max Di Bella stage a fantastic duel that would Victory Kart / Briggs and Stratton sponsored Junior action. After a mechanical issue in the second heat, Mexican Javier Gonzalez would not get the best of start positions in 20th, but made the most of a great setup as he began a charge through the field. In the end that charge would take him to third making the daily podium Munoz first, Malukas second and Gonzales third. Formula TaG Junior Grid eventually be won by Daley by just a half of a second. Ariel Castro would lead home the Masters Shifters while Jordon LennoxLamb would do the same for the Stock Motos. Collin Daley would take top honors in Heat #2 over Di Bella again but this time fellow open Shifter competitor Michael de Quesada (USA) would follow them home third overall. Fourth overall was Matthew DiLeo picking up the honors for Stock Moto while the Masters Shifter portion was headed up by Farshad Bagheri (USA). In the shifter final Collin Daley would start on pole and assume a lead he would never give up. Max Di Bella did his best to give chase but eventually faded allowing Open Shifter competitors Michael de Quesada and Stephan Isambard (USA) to claim podium spots. In the Masters Shifter class Ariel Castro was on a quest to complete a perfect six-win season, but it was not to be as he exited the race on lap two. This left Vicky Brian in the top spot and she put in an awesome run to take the victory. Second and third in Masters Shifter went to David Levy (USA) and Jason Alden (USA). In Stock Moto Matthew DiLeo (Canada) would bring home another dominating win over Chris Gannon (USA) in second and Phil Haddad (USA) third. Ogden USA sponsored Formula TaG Junior The TaG Junior class took to the Orlando track sounding like an enormous pack 32 GO Racing Magazine of angry bees as they fought for every thousandth of a second around the circuit. When all the times were in it was David Malukas (USA) who would claim the Koene USA P1 Pole Award over Roman DeAngelis (Canada) by just 0.060 of a second. Heat #1 would see Christian Munoz (Columbia) emerge as a main contender for the days title as he took the win in a tight battle with Mathias Ramirez (USA) and David Malukas. In Heat #2, Nick Brueckner (USA) would put in an amazing run from near the back of the pack to take the win. Unfortunately for Nick, the stewards felt some of his passes were too aggressive and he was stripped from the results handing the heat win to Roman DeAngelis. In the TaG Junior final Christian Munoz would start up front and take an early lead. Behind Munoz random chaos erupted as a handful of drivers got turned around on the first lap. During this time a few drivers made great moves though the pack as others fell back. One driver with his eye on a championship and keen to make smart moves was David Malukas. After surviving the start Malukas would find himself fifth Zach Claman DeMelo checked out in TaG Senior Russell Karting Specialties sponsored Formula TaG Senior The final group in the day’s racing queue was the TaG Senior competitors. These drivers really put on a great show, evident by a tight fight for pole position. When all the times were in Dan Roeper (USA) claimed qualifying bragging rights on his Rotax powered kart by just 0.008 of a second over Daniel Formal. In fact, the top four qualifiers, which included Andre Nicastro (Brasil) and Zachary Claman DeMelo (Canada), were separated by only 0.047 of a second from first to fourth, with both IAME and Rotax power present. That’s close! Once the heat races started, it was DeMelo over Nicastro in Heat #1 by 0.225 of a second. While in Heat #2, Brenden Baker (USA) used great positioning in the inverted field to take a seven second win over Bill McGlaughlin jr. The final would get underway with IAME powered Nicastro leading the way only to be overcome by DeMelo. Daniel Formal and Dan Roeper would have their say as well as the top four asserted their authority. With this being the last race of the Formula Kart Championship season it was clear nobody wanted to leave anything on the table, as the racing was extremely aggressive. Unfortunately for Roper, the point’s leader coming into the race, this aggression transferred into contact from another driver and some time spent stopped on the side of the track, finally restarting near the rear of the field. More on that later. As the race entered its middle phase, the drivers settled into a groove. Nicastro held the lead while a little ways back Daniel Formal was doing all he could to get by Zachary DeMelo. Behind them, Daniel Stross (USA) was putting in a very solid run to the fourth position. Roper, meanwhile, was desperately fighting his way back toward the front. He had to finish no more than two positions behind Demelo to retain his points lead. As the race came to an end, Andre Nicastro celebrated while crossing the line to win the race he’d seemed destined to win all day long. Demelo held off Formal to take second in a performance that would lock-up the TaG Senior championship for him. Daniel Formal fought bravely all race long but in the end he would have to settle for third. Roper saw his Championship hopes dashed as he came across the line three spots back from Demelo. However, aggressive driving on his way to the front earned him a four position penalty, eventually being classified in ninth. Championship Podiums As the sun faded low on the horizon Formula Kart Production’s Bill Wright had the honor of bestowing the 2014 Formula Ariel Castro kept the season perfect with his fifth win in five races. Kart Championship season champions with their signature FWT acrylic “Palm” trophies. First up was Victory Kart / Briggs and Stratton sponsored Briggs LO206 Senior. From starting the season in Homestead by literally taking a motor straight out of a box on Friday afternoon and bolting it to his years-old two-cycle chassis, Jamaican driver Collin Daley jr. would wrap up the season with the most poles and most wins of any competitor in the class to take a well-deserved championship. Second and third would go to Steven Kilsdonk (USA) and Haley Morris respectively. AM Racing Kart sponsored Formula TaG Cadet Drivers were up next as the d’Orlando brothers Michael and Nicholas would take first and third, sandwiching Lochie Hughes in second. This was a particularly joyous podium as the young Australian has become a close friend of the brothers throughout the season. Of course, being a championship podium there was to be a champagne spraying (non-alcoholic for the younger drivers). But, before Matthew DiLeo won Stock Moto shifter they could even get their bottles open a dastardly sneak attack was carried out by Koene USA team owner Mike Maurini and his staff, along with Lochie’s father, as they used pre-prepared bottles from behind the podium to drench the young competitors. Old age and treachery: 1 - Youth and exuberance: 0. While collecting his “Big Palm” championship trophy on the podium, International Racing USA Formula Stock Moto champion Matthew DiLeo was prolific in his praise of the organization and staff at FWT, and for his steadfast and supportive team members, and stating “we’re only here to win”. And win they did. Chris Gannon and Matthew Sanford fought a close battle for second, with the position eventually going to Gannon by a mere 28 points. Bordogna Racing Engines sponsored Formula Open Shifter was dominated throughout the year by Collin Daley and, as such, the FWT Championship Palm was his second at the end of the day. Max Di Bella made the most of his opportunities at the last two venues, but missing Homestead meant second was the best he could do. Dominic LeGrand (Canada) scored enough points early to end up third in the championship without running the final rounds. With his dominant runs throughout the season Ariel Castro was the deserving winner of the Decal Zone sponsored Formula Masters Shifter championship. Petr Ptacek actually scored just as many GO Racing Magazine 33 COVER STORY Victory Kart / Briggs and Stratton Senior Championship Podium overall points as Ariel, but after the drop races (five best races out of six counts for the championship) was forced to settle for second. Third place went to Farshad Bagheri who will have great stories to tell us next season after attending the Granja 500 later this year. Ogden USA sponsored Formula TaG Junior was a closely fought championship all season. Although contenders emerged early on, no one could predict how this ultra-competitive class would end up. It all went down to the last lap of the last race to determine that David Malukas had earned his first Florida Winter Tour championship. Second was his Top Kart USA teammate Zach Holden while Christian Munoz came on strong at the end to claim third. In Russell Karting Specialties sponsored TaG Senior Zachary Claman DeMelo used a very strong result during the last weekend to just barely capture the championship. Cole is establishing quite a racing resume in the eight short years he has been racing. With racing opportunities on both the West and East coasts, you might just see Cole Glasson at a track near you! Words: GoRacing Magazine (GRM) Tell us a little about yourself; how old are you, what grade are you in, where are you from. (CG) I was born in Rockwall, TX and have lived in the Dallas area most of my life. I am 13 years old and attend Harpool Middle School in the eighth grade. (GRM) How long have you been racing and how did you get started in the sport? (CG) Every year my parents and I would go to the Indy 500, and one year when I was 5, after the race my parents asked me if I wanted to get started in racing. Of course my answer was yes, so before I knew it I had a go-kart and was racing at our local track. Since then, I have been racing for eight years. (GRM) Can you tell us about the types of racing you have done? (CG) I started out at the lowest levels of go-karting such as local races. After about two years of racing club races, I started to move to regional and national level races. By the time I was 11, I started to move into oval racing, where I was accepted into a development program and raced Ford Focus Midgets on the West Coast. After about a year of midget racing on the West coast, I jumped straight into late models up in the Northeast racing in the JEGS/CRA All Star Tour. Currently, I am racing trucks on the East coast (NC and SC) with the Southeast Super Truck Series. (GRM) I see in addition to karting, you have raced quarter midgets, have done some car racing; and now transitioning into the NC/SC trucks. How did that come about? (CG) Whenever I’m not racing the truck, I’m always trying to find something to drive. Sometimes I drive go-karts at my local track (Dallas Karting Complex) and sometimes we borrow a mini-sprint from one of our friends (K&K Race Services and Kaley Engstrom), but we’re always trying to find seat time. Going into the 2014 race season, we wanted to find a team that would not only provide a car for me to race in, but would help develop me into a better driver and allow me to run a complete season to get the much needed seat time. We ended up with Nesbitt Racing, driving trucks on the East coast. (GRM) Being a younger driver in the car series and in the trucks, do you feel added pressure, and if so how do you handle it? (CG) I definitely feel pressured since I’m half the age of some of the drivers out there and only have a little experience in the series, but I just try to go out to race and have fun doing it. I try to stay relaxed and just take each session out in the truck one at a time. (GRM) Do you participate in any pre-race training or conditioning? (CG) I am currently in an elite cross country program to help me stay in shape and help build endurance. We run up to 30-40 miles each week, and compete in many races such as 5ks and 10ks. In the Fall we train hard in order to go to either AAU or USATF Nationals, which is some of the biggest running competitions in the United States. Being on a cross country team GO Racing Magazine 39 TALKING TO: COLE GLASSON also allows me to get away from racing and hangout with my friends. (GRM) What do you like to do off the track? Do you have any interests or activities you like to participate in outside of racing? (CG) Besides running with my cross country team, I also like to play iRacing, which is a very realistic racing simulator where you race real cars and tracks against real people. I also like to go fishing, and I even have my own kayak that I take out when the weather is nice. (GRM) Tell us about your future goals in racing? 40 GO Racing Magazine (CG) My goal in racing is to be a good role model for all people. I want to impact people through my racing and just have a good time doing it. (GRM) I am sure you have a lot of sponsors and people you would like to thank that have helped you along your racing career, would you like to give a shout out to them? (CG) I would like to thank AM Technical Solutions, ProSoap, K1 RaceGear, MPM Marketing, Nesbitt Racing, and Dallas Karting Complex for helping me have the opportunity to race. And I would especially like to thank my parents for helping make this possible as well as the countless other people that have helped along the way. I would also like to thank God for blessing me with the opportunity I have, knowing that not many people have it. (GRM) Anything else you would like to add? (CG) Thank you for the opportunity for this interview and to be included in GoRacing Magazine and I wish all the GO racers our there luck in their season. Can it get any better? Sunny skies greeted the 50 drivers making history as the new United States Rotax Max Challenge program began a new era in Southern California. The action was exciting in each category that took to the 3/4-mile course first of eight championship rounds, along with racers earning their first ‘punch’ toward qualifying to race at the 2014 United States Rotax Grand Nationals at Miller Motorsports Park in July. The format for opening round of the So-Cal Rotax Challenge featured a throwback to club racing, as all classes were set by a ‘pea pick’ for position to open up the first heat race. The grid for heat two saw the field inverted, with points deciding the lineup for each main event. Series promoter Andy Seesemann will keep the racers on their toes, mixing up each event format in the future. Racers took to the ‘Grande’ circuit of the CalSpeed facility, going in the counterclockwise direction. Scoring the first-ever So-Cal victories were seven drivers beginning their chase off right toward becoming the inaugural series champions. Jake Craig dominated the opening round of the Tru Tech Senior Max class. Craig started near the front of heat one, which allowed him to take over the top spot by the completion of lap one. He started at the back of the pack to begin heat two, charging to the front end of the field and assuming the lead by lap five of the 10-lap race. Craig scored the win seven tenths of a second ahead of Nathan Seegrist, earning the pole position for the Final. Craig went wire-towire, leading all 20 laps and driving to over a five-second victory ahead of Carlee Taylor, who came up from sixth on the grid. Seegrist completed the Senior podium with Eric Molinatti and Alejandro Fernandez rounding out the top-five. A solid 14 drivers, matching the count of the Senior field, filled the grid for the PSL SoCal Masters Max race in Fontana, with the complexion of the race coming down to everyone chasing just two. John Crow and Erik Jackson battled clean but competitive all day, GO Racing Magazine 43 SO-CAL ROTAX CHALLENGE Cooper Hicks trading wins with Crow eventually coming out on top with the first main event victory of the season. Both Crow and Jackson started heat one at the front of the grid, with Crow leading all 10 laps as Jackson finished right behind Crow’s rear bumper. Crow and Jackson started the second heat at the back of the field, with Jackson making quick work of the karts ahead of him to take the top spot by lap five and score the win. Crow made his way through his competition as well, but could only get to third before he ran out of laps. Crow set the tone early in the Final, securing the lead with Jackson in tow. Jackson assumed the lead for a few laps, before Crow retook the position and began pulling away. The 2012 Team USA driver checked out to a two-second victory ahead of Jackson. Chris Karlen crossed the line third, but was removed in tech Cole Keith Cotham 44 GO Racing Magazine for a float arm height issue. That put Larry Hayashigawa into third over Peter Mokran and Michael Boyer. Christian Brooks has been winning many races thus far into the 2014 season, both at the regional and national level. The California racer took his winning ways to CalSpeed last weekend as he swept the day’s action in the Nash Motorsportz Junior Max class. Brooks led each lap of the first heat race, taking the win by nearly a full second ahead of Phillippe Denes. The second heat race threatened Brooks’ perfect run on the day as he spent nearly the entire race chasing Denes. Brooks took the lead away from Denes on lap seven before driving to the win and the pole position for the main event. Denes hung tough with Brooks the first half of the feature race before taking the lead on lap 11. Brooks would reclaim the lead with five to go, scoring the first win ahead of Denes and NorCal driver Horatio Fitz-Simon. Capping off the top-five were Jonathan Shone and Arie Zimmermann. The Ryan Perry Motorsports Mini Max feature race was won by Myles Farhan, who strapped on a rental Rotax engine Saturday night to earn the inaugural So-Cal Rotax Challenge victory. Farhan won the opening heat race, with the second moto decided by a few inches. Dante Yu finished just a tenth of a second ahead of Trey Brown with Farhan in third. Yu led the opening laps of the feature race but by lap five, Farhan took the lead. From there, he drove away to the main event victory ahead of Brown and Yu. Cole Keith Cotham secured the victory in Jake Craig the 2 Wild Karting Micro Max category. Dominic Gorden and Cotham paced the field in the opening heat race with Cotham crossing the finish line first. Cotham however was removed from the results for a post-race disqualification handing the win to Gorden. Cotham rebounded very well as he led every lap of the heat two en route to the win. Gorden looked strong as he led the opening three laps of the main event before giving way to Cotham on lap four. Cotham then checked out on the field and drove to a whopping 19-second win over Gorden. Cameron Easton was removed for a carburetor issue in tech, which promoted Ethan Ho to the podium, ahead of Jalen Mac and Tyson Quach. The youngest racers competing at the opening weekend of the So-Cal Rotax Challenge contested the local option Mack Motorsports Honda Kid Kart division. Cooper Hicks began the day by scoring the first heat race win, beating Nick Curry by over thirty seconds. The second heat race featured Hicks coming from the back of the pack with Curry pulling away from the field. When the checkers flew on the race, it was Curry clearing the finish line two seconds ahead of Hicks. The feature race however belonged to Hicks, as he took the lead on the opening circuit and drove to a 21-second victory. Curry ended up second, with Ian Dodge joining them on the podium. Delaney Adamo and Skyler Geczi rounded out the top-five. Erik Jackson was the lone competitor in the K1 Race Gear DD2 Masters category, sweeping the first round action. The new series returns to action following a two-month break, scheduled for another day of exciting and family-fun racing at CalSpeed Karting Center on May 10 to complete round two. Karting from age 8 Born in Singapore, James Pull debuted in Malaysia in karting at the age of 8.
