We are on the par 5, 16th tee here on the Players Course at the Weston Hills Country Club. It’s a beautiful day, there’s a gentle, cooling breeze and the sunshine is glimmering off the water running down the entire left side of the hole all the way to the green. Wait a minute, did I just say WATER! This serenity has quickly subsided and the flurry of negativity begins. Sure, we see that glimmering water alright, and it’s about to have a shiny new ball resting at the bottom. Our thoughts have now quickly focused on not hitting our shot into the water. When that image becomes burned into your mind, you will usually do one of two things; hit the ball in the water or miss the fairway well to the right in a last ditch attempt to avoid any chance of going left. Where did you hit the ball? 58 5'9" 4'2" 2'9" 4'4" BIG CAT PARENT/CHILD TOURNAMENT – May 17, 2008 Boys Tiger Division 1st Place Michael & Jack Heda 2nd Place Jason & Robert Kusher PGA TOUR ACADEMY Nicolas Garzon Chris Ure Thank You Everyone for Participating!!!!! Chris Ure with sons CJ Ure and James Sadowski The TOUR Academy has the opportunity to study the best golfers in the world and one difference between an amateur and a tour player is how he or she conducts themselves on the course. Imagination is a key to great ball striking, unfortunately, it can also hinder our ball striking abilities as well, depending upon what image you are creating for yourself. Ask a great player what they are picturing before a shot and it will be a very detailed picture including the shot’s specific shape and its ultimate destination. It is very target oriented, not hazard oriented. So, how can you improve? The answer is by working on a pre-shot routine that includes visualization and several other keys to help create a detailed POSITIVE image in your mind. The exciting thing is that –with a little practice – you can have a pre-shot routine that matches a Tour player’s. We at the TOUR Academy have devised a routine that has eight steps that when mastered should only take you around 30 seconds to complete and will put your focus in the right place for a successful shot. They are as follows: Start with a cue. This is the little reminder such as reclosing the Velcro on your golf glove or putting your hand on a club head in your golf bag that triggers the start of your concentrated focus on the upcoming shot. • Visualize your shot. • Make a practice swing. • Pick an intermediate target. This should be a spot about six to 10 feet in front of the ball on your target line. • Walk in at an angle to the ball. This means stepping in to your set-up at a 45 degree angle to the target line so that you can clearly see your alignments in relation to the target. • Aim the club face at your intermediate target. • Take Your Stance parallel to the target line. • Stay in motion and stare at the target. For more information on taking your game to the next level contact the TOUR Academy at 954-384-4663.
