Fond Farewell THANKS TO BONIN STAFFERS MARK-ANTONIO GRANT, FRED SUTTON Councilman Mike Bonin recently lost two key members of his staff, and Drollinger Properties would like to thank both Mark-Antonio Grant and Fred Sutton for their incredible dedication to the Westchester community. Mark was a special assistant to both Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl and Councilman Mike Bonin and announced his retirement at the end of November. He was the area’s “point person” on city capital projects and public works issues, such as street beautification and resurfacing. Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, Mark moved to Los Angeles in 1978 after graduating from William Paterson University, where he earned a degree in communications. In 1992 he moved back to New Jersey, where he worked as a legislative aide for State Senator Ronald L. Rice until 1994, when he returned to Los Angeles. Mark is a cancer survivor, whose can-do attitude and dedication to his job will be sorely missed in Westchester. Fred, who served as Councilman Bonin’s Field Deputy for the Westchester, Playa del Rey and Playa Vista areas since June 2014, recently left the office to be the government affairs manager for the Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles. increasing services and making sure the office is responsive to the community’s needs. Sutton grew up in the CD11 area and studied political science at the University of Arizona and foreign policy at American University. He previously served as a member of the West LA Neighborhood Council and has been active in local politics for years. Outside of public service, Sutton has worked in commercial office leasing, sales and marketing. Fred, who previously served as a Constituent Advocate for the Council District 11 office, worked on helping fulfill Bonin’s vision for the community, “We will miss both Mark-Antonio and Fred, and we wish them the best in the next chapters of their lives,” said Karen Dial. Life Here & There Snapshots ... LET’S SET A STANDARD THAT MAKES WESTCHESTER A DESTINATION “Global Imagination” was the key phrase used by President, Timothy Law Snyder, Ph.D., as he accepted the honor of leading one of Westchester’s premier institutions – Loyola Marymount University, on October 6, 2015. I left that day filled with a spirit of excitement and ready to imagine, create and inspire my family, friends and community as we come together to craft our world. The goal is to start with a caring and thoughtful group of people who enjoy the creation process and what better place to find those people than in Westchester. As we move boldly into the future, we benefit by allowing our imagination to create the community in which we want to live. In a recent conversation with John Lousarrarian from the YMCA, we discussed creating a place to be and interactive opportunities to foster brainstorming and dialogue that create a strong sense of community. It is my honor to do just that in 2017 by opening a new, independent bookstore for the Triangle area. We plan to create a venue where community members gather for learning, fellowship and creativity. Check out the rendering below. Our community of Westchester is woven with threads of long-standing relationships, hard-work and dedication to a thriving neighborhood feel, but our work isn’t finished. In his speech, President Snyder encouraged LMU to “think in ways they have never thought before,” and that is what we need to do as well. We need to weave our organizations and non-profits together to create a tapestry of beauty and inter-connected strength that exemplifies the “Westchester Way.” We need to tempt and tantalize the young, bright minds that are moving into our area and show them what community engagement looks like and how it benefits the whole person. Above all, we need to remind ourselves that we are raising the bar. I BELIEVE we can set a standard that will make Westchester a destination. Namaste, Karen Abundance for All Helps Locals Get on Their Feet Martin Nwaege spends his days working hard to make sure the homeless, the elderly and others who are struggling to make ends meet not only have enough food to eat, but have what they need to get back on their feet. Nwaege’s non-profit organization, Abundance for All, Inc., is a Drollinger tenant and works closely with L.A. Food Bank, Ralphs, Gelson’s, Vons and others to get food to those families in need. Nwaege added that the organization also helps teen mothers create resumes and provides them with preparation for job interviews. “We want to create a level of confidence within to get them back into the workforce where they can be successful,” he said. For more information, or to donate, please call (424) 243-7181 or visit Abundance for All on Facebook. Karen Dial joins USC President C. L. Max Nikias, who talked tech with Silicon Beach-based senior executives from companies like Google, YouTube, Yahoo, SpaceX and IMAX at the LAX Coastal Chamber “Power Hour.” The name of Howard Drollinger, a diehard Trojan, was invoked fondly in their conversation. Congratulations to these members of the Drollinger Properties family who recently celebrated their milestone anniversaries with our company: from left, Property Manager Cody Koopmann (25 years of service); Accounts Payable Associate Robert Borrayo (15 years of service); President Karen Dial (10 years of service); and Associate Ruben Ramirez (10 years of service). Green Nails Spa Revamps Former Mantrap Location With Environmental Spin Focusing on both natural and organic products and the highest level of cleanliness and sanitation, the new Green Nails Spa has taken over the former Mantrap Nails location at 8801 S. Sepulveda Boulevard, on the second floor above Petco. Owner Peter Dang said the location has been completely remodeled, including the addition of new spa/massage chairs, new nail tables and even televisions. Dang said his mother worked at Mantrap for 10 years and eventually struck a deal to buy the spa and salon when the former owner decided to retire. “It’s a family business,” said Dang, who added that most of the salon’s customers are regulars, people who have been in the community for years and LMU students who discovered the high quality, affordable cost of Green Nails. “But sometimes we get people on a long layover at LAX who just need their nails done before they get back on the plane.” Green Nails Spa is open seven days a week and offers everything from nail care and waxing to facials and more. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments can be made at (310) 641-4123.
