THE QUARTERLY PUBLICATION OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC PEDIATRICIANS President’s Message Margaret A. Orcutt Tuddenham, DO, FACEP, FACOP ACOP President It is Almost Time for the Spring Conference! Only a few weeks remain until the College’s Spring CME gathering in Williamsburg, VA. This meeting will be special for a number of reasons: first, it is ACOP’s 70th anniversary. To help us celebrate, we will have a special presentation by Dr. Watson’s grandson, who will help us look back over almost three quarters of a century. Williamsburg has long been a favorite location for our members with a plethora of activities for free time and family enjoyment. Your Board of Trustees, along with several invited participants, will hold a strategic planning session. We will be looking forward to the next 5-10 years in hopes of shaping a growing and viable organization for all osteopathic pediatricians, whether osteopathically or allopathically trained. On Saturday afternoon, we will have 2010 Spring Conference LIVE WEBINAR Saturday, April 24, 2010 Registration opens on April 7 You must pre-register by clicking HERE a session on vaccines and vaccine safety, where for the first time, we will offer a free “live” webinar to our members at home. Speakers on Saturday for the webinar (and those attending in Margaret A. Orcutt person) include Tuddenham, DO, Stanley E. Grogg, FACEP, FACOP DO, FACOP, Ms. Donna Weaver and Gary S. Marshall, MD. You will be able to login for the 1:00 – 4:00 pm ET session and participate in the session. If successful, we hope to be able to provide CME remotely to members unable to physically attend our meetings. This will be a new member benefit and opens the door to a multitude of other educational and communication possibilities. Members may receive up to 3 Category 1-A credits for participating, provided you are registered and take the pre- and post-tests. The AOA requires that you pass the test with a grade of 70% or better in order to receive CME credit. As usual, we will have many students attending. There will be poster presentations, a fun run, committee meetings, and the popular Conduit for Success filling the days, as well as excellent didactic sessions. It’s not too late to register. Hope to see you there! CLICK HERE to Register. SPRING • 2010 2010 Spring Conference Selected Speaker Biosketches Stanley E. Most of the “humor” that comes to me is either terrible or I don’t get it. So I can be negative about email sometimes. But occasionally, something crosses my computer that gives me a kick and I yearn to share it with others – like now. Anything that deals with the cuteness or smarts of kids gives me warm feelings, so here are a few of the “Why We Love Children” that arrived recently – slightly modified. • • • One summer evening, a mother was driving her 5-year-old son home and they pulled alongside an open convertible at a red light. A young lady in it stood up to wave to someone. She was stark naked. The 5-year old screamed, “Mommy! Mommy Look at that lady! She’s not wearing a seat belt.” A woman was trying hard to get the ketchup out of the bottle. During her struggle, the telephone rang, so she asked her 4-year-old daughter to answer it. “Mommy can’t come to the ‘phone right now. She’s hitting the bottle.” A little boy wandered into the YMCA women’s locker room. When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing towels and running for cover. The little boy watched in amazement, then asked, “What’s the matter? Didn’t you ever see a little boy before?” A 6-year-old girl ran up to a policeman who was patrolling near a school. She looked up and down at his uniform, then asked, “Are you a cop?” The kindly patrolman answered, “Yes.” “Well, my mother told me that if I ever needed help, I should ask the police. Is that right?” Again he replied, “Yes.” “Well then,” she said as she extended her foot toward him, “would you please tie my shoe?” • While working for an organization that delivered lunches to elderly shut-ins, a woman took her 4-year-old daughter along. At one home, the little girl was intrigued by the sight of a set of false teeth soaking in a glass of water. After staring for a few seconds, she turned to her mother and said, “The tooth fairy will never believe this!” • The first week of school was over, and a little kindergarten girl cried to her mother when she came home, “I’m just wasting my time. I can’t read. I can’t write. And they won’t let me talk.” • The 5-year-old son of a minister and his playmates found a dead robin. They felt the bird should have a proper burial and found a small box to put the robin in. They dug a hole in the ground, and turned to the minister’s son to say the appropriate prayers. With sonorous dignity, he intoned his version of what he thought his father always said, “Glory be unto the Father… and unto the Son… and into the hole he goes.” • NUMBERS Numbers to Think About By Arnold Melnick, DO, FACOP • BY THE A little girl was watching her parents dress for a party. When she saw her father donning his tuxedo, she warned, “Daddy, you shouldn’t wear that suit!” “And why not, darling?” She answered, “You know that it always gives you a headache the next morning.” 14% Adolescents are overweight 500,000 Teenagers a year deliver a baby 400,000 Of those teenagers are unmarried 375,000 New cases of gonorrhea reported each year in adolescents 10,000 Adolescents a day contract a sexually transmitted disease 3,000 Teenager (at least) commit suicide each year 300,000 Poisonings a year are reported in children and adolescents 30,000 Estimated reported cases of incest in teenagers a year As they say, “Out of the mouths of babes…” Or even if they are from the pens of comedy writers, those kids sure are cute. PULSE | Spring 2010 American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians 3 ACIP Report By Stanley E. Grogg, DO, FACOP AOA/ACOP representative to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the National institute of Health 1. Human Papillomavirus Virus Vaccine (HPV) Summary and Future Plans: • ACIP work group is looking at recommending permissive vaccination for women aged 27-45; to be presented and voted on at June ACIP meeting • Quadrivalent HPV (Gardasil by Merck) in males is being discussed for further recommendation at the June ACIP meeting 2. Prevnar 13 approved to replace Prevnar 7. • Prevnar 7 by Pfizer is indicated for active immunization of infants and toddlers against serious invasive disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, including bacteremia (bloodstream infection) and meningitis (infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord) caused by the seven serotypes (4, 6B, 9V, 14, 18C, 19F, and 23F) in the vaccine • Prevnar 13 includes 6 additional serotypes (1, 3, 5, 6A, 7F, and19A) giving additional protection. 3. Influenza • World Health Organization (WHO) is recommending combining H1N1 pandemic virus with seasonal H3N2 and B virus for 2010-11 seasonal vaccine (Only one shot instead of seasonal plus pandemic) • ACIP now recommends “Universal influenza vaccination” (all persons older than 6 months) 4. Mumps Outbreak, Northeast USA, June 2009-Present • Orchitis most common complication • 98% belong to Hasidic Jewish community with highly dense living/educational conditions • Importations of virus from endemic areas outside US (Britain) 5. Vaccine Supplies: • Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) Vaccine is available in adequate supply; recommend recall of patients for booster dose STAY IN THE KNOW! Vaccination Errors Can Be Avoided After studying 607 Vaccine errors, researchers David Bundy, MD, MPH, and colleagues recommend the rule of “5 rights”: the right vaccine given to the right patient in the right dose by the right route at the right time. Observing this would reduce vaccine errors. His group found that vaccine errors account for many mistakes; wrong vaccine, time and dose occurred most often, and wrong route and wrong patient were rare. The tetanus group accounts for 36%, as the vaccines, for example, “not only look alike (Td, TDap, TDap, and DT), but they also have brand names that sound alike (Adacel, and Daptcel).” Other causes of mistakes include scheduled vaccination being given earlier or later than recommended, and inadequate vaccination records that cannot keep pace with the 30 or more vaccines given to children by the time they reach six years of age. The authors suggest that computerized records may reduce errors that occur when the wrong dose or wrong concentration is administered. Further information can be found in Vaccine 27 (29), pp. 3890-3896, June, 2009. 6. Rotavirus Vaccine •Added Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) as contraindication for RV5 (RotaTeq by Merck) and RV1(Rotarix by GSK) For additional information, consult: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/recs/acip For Membership Questions or to Join ACOP Contact Kim Battle kim@ACOPeds.org - (804) 565-6311 4 American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians Student Binh Phung Nominated For SDOY OSU-COM senior Binh Phung has been nominated for National DO Student of the Year, based on his leadership, commitment, community service, professionalism and dedication. PULSE | Spring 2010 Answers ? ???? ? ? ...Whose name is it? A P P E L L AT I O N Friedreich’s Ataxia A degenerative disease with sclerosis of the spinal cord which affects a patient’s speech, balance and coordination Nikolaus Friedreich German clinician and neurologist Nikolaus Freidreich has his name attached to several eponyms (foot, sign, disease, sound change) but his greatest celebrity comes from Friedreich’s ataxia. Friedreich was born in Wurzburg in 1825, son and grandson of two famed professors of medicine, his father a psychiatrist and his grandfather a pathologist.. He received his doctorate in 1850, and planned a career in pathology. At the same time, he practiced clinical medicine and steered toward that area. In 1858, he became professor of pathology and therapy at Heidelberg and was director of the medical clinic, holding these positions for the remainder of his life. He also maintained an extensive private practice in medicine. Highly competent as a physician and a pathologist, he held interests in all braches of medicine, especially neurology. He was highly regarded as a teacher of medicine. In addition, he contributed eight major written works and 51 larger and smaller treatises-- all on a variety of medical subjects. In 1863, after extensive research in muscular dystrophy, spinal ataxia and brain tumors, he described the degenerative disease now known as Friedreich’s Ataxia Friedreich died in 1882 of a ruptured aortic aneurysm. Melnick Marks Milestone ACOP Past President Arnold Melnick, DO, FACOP, recently passed the milestone of 200 published professional articles with the appearance of two of his columns. All of his professional articles have been on topics in medical communication, pediatrics and medicine. These do not include his multitude of other writings, such as news items, editorials and press releases. The two items that pushed him over the top were his regular columns in the Journal of the American Medical Writers Association and in PULSE, of which he is co-editor. Dr. Melnick has produced a monthly column for The DO magazine on Effective Medical Communication for more than four years. He has published six books; two more are awaiting publication.
