The Designer’s
By Anne Marie Ashley

It takes really living in a home before
you can understand how it works and doesn’t work for your
family. Once you’ve discovered the ways it doesn’t work, you
can make changes accordingly. Sometimes, too, the ceiling
collapses, and it paves the way for you to make the changes
you’ve been considering anyway. Such was the case for Molly
and Michael Painter when they came home to find the living
room ceiling in pieces on the floor. “After living in the home
for five years and sharing a bathroom with our daughter, we
decided we needed our own space,” explains Molly. “The
ceiling collapse was just the impetus to make the changes we’d
been considering for a while.”
The Painters were drawn to their Georgian Revival home
because they love classic architecture and the charming
neighborhood with its walk-able streets was idyllic. “We really
love the gracious common spaces a Georgian Revival offers
when you walk in the front door,” says Molly. The couple
wanted the first priority to be maintaining the integrity of the
architecture while also making it more livable for their active
family of five.
Though the project would be challenging, trying to merge
the original home with a new addition, not to mention
matching the original brick exterior with the new wing, Molly
says the 18-month process was seamless. “Larry Irwin was our
superintendent,” explains Molly, “and he did a fabulous job
on the day to day management.” While the ceilings were
being replaced with sheetrock, the HVAC and plumbing was

replaced as well, and landscape designer Frank Liggett moved the rose garden
from the back yard, which was in the way of the addition. “I was thrilled that
Frank was able to create an inviting rose garden in the new space,” says Molly.
“It’s our refuge in the spring, summer and fall when the roses are in bloom.”
A designer herself, Molly took to completing the look of their home, calling
on her background in fashion (she worked at Ralph Lauren in New York
City), as well as her own family. “My three girls are all extremely creative and
individual,” she offers. “They provide a lot of inspiration.” Molly continues,
saying that she also took inspiration from her favorite designer Kelly Wearstler
and fashion designer Lela Rose. “Her style is feminine, yet edgy and cool.”
She keeps her textile background close with etches taken right from the Ralph
Lauren draft tables, framed and hung as art in various places around the home.
We asked Molly what her go-to fabric and wallpaper lines were and she
quickly replied with Osboure and Little, Cowtan and Tout, Quadrille, Celerie
Kemble and Travers. She adds that her favorite way to add a wow factor lies in
lighting fixtures, spending a lot of time searching for the perfect unique piece.
And though every space has different appeal to her, Molly’s favorite room in
the home is the navy lacquered den with the orange couch. “I love to curl

up on the couch under a blanket and read a book.” Their
family of five spends most of their time in the large kitchen,
cooking, doing homework and entertaining. “It’s the hub
of the house and the grey and white palette provides a
soothing appeal amidst the chaos,” shares Molly.
“My advice to anyone decorating their home,” she says,
“would be to live in the home before you make any major
changes. See how you live, move and feel in the space. Trust
your instincts and go for it.”v

Like any vacation home,
relaxation and escape is the name of the
game. Anything less than the most tranquil
environment is not serving its purpose.
When Margaret Nowell of Nowell and
Company met with her clients about their
beach home in Pine Knoll Shores, she got
her marching orders for a restful retreat and
she couldn’t wait to get started.
The homeowners found a beautiful lot
with a stunning view and they wanted the
home they built to only accentuate the
landscape, not obstruct it. Having worked
with them on two other homes, Margaret
had a pretty good idea of what would make
her clients happy, so she stood by from
construction to completion. “I ask lots of
questions and listen carefully,” Margaret
says. “It’s all about understanding my client,
what their vision is and choosing the correct
furnishings and fabrics to create their look.”
Margaret adds that her clients are so inspiring
to her design ideas; it helps to work together
with them to come up with the best possible

look and feel. It doesn’t hurt that her mother, an artist, spent hours with Margaret painting
and creating things with her, giving her the gift of a great eye for colors and blends.
Over the next year, Margaret worked with the homeowners to get the floor plan,
development and interior design in place. Pulling pieces from her own showroom in
Nowell and Company, she created a calming mix of neutrals with pops of blue and
combinations of wood and stone that highlighted the panoramic views of the ocean. “I
tell my homeowners to stay in their comfort zone with the big pieces and add the fun
with accessories,” says Margaret. “Home is where we unwind each day, it needs to be
your nest – comfort, physical and emotional, is what makes a house a home.”
Margaret adds that while it wasn’t the case in this project, sometimes it’s hard for
clients to convey what they want. “I present numerous things until I see a glint in their
eyes,” she says. “People can’t always communicate the look they’re after, but they know.
It’s my job to crack the code!” When asked what her favorite room in this beach home
is, she says it has to be the bar room, recalling that it has a great story. “It was a space
that kept getting smaller during the building process and my client came up with the
idea of making it a bar area,” she explains. “I custom designed the front and back bar to
fit the space exactly, and measured the wall a million times trying to make sure it was
right for the design I had in mind. My obsession soon became a joke that we still laugh
about today."v

SPACES WE LOVE
Great style begins at your doorstep and this Cotswold home is no exception.
Draped in Phillip Jeffries paper, the walls alone are a showstopper –
and that’s just one of the many reasons this foyer is a space we love.
Layering patterned grass cloth, a rustic console and a contemporary
mirror creates a space that is polished and inviting. Designers Angie
Persson and Merrin Lowe of Swell décor held true to their personal
design principle of mixing the right elements to create a space that
exudes balance and style.
“We call this a conventional entrance with a twist! It immediately sets the
tone for amazing style throughout
the rest of this gracious home.”

to Create Curb Appeal
Word on the street is that homes with pretty
curb appeal offer a warmer welcome to your
guests AND potential homebuyers. Plus, the
feeling of pride you get when pulling up to
your home may just trump all other reasons
to spend a little time making your outside
just as beautiful as the inside. There must
be hundreds of ways to dress up your home,
here are just a few of our favorites.

Makeover
Lighting
Number one on every list is the front door. It can
be as easy as painting it an eye-catching color or as
elaborate as installing a gorgeous hand-carved door.
Either way, a standout door just beckons guests to
come inside and visit.
Add personality to your house-marker
with brass numbers and/or letters, some
paint, or even a brick or stone surround
or stand. Planting flowers and plants at
the base adds even more appeal.
From a statement-making pendant on the
front porch to simple solar lights to spotlight
your trees or facade, landscape lighting
packs major punch.
Dress-Up Your Driveway
Simply repairing the cracks in the concrete of your driveway can
make a world of difference, but why not go a step further and add brick
or stone pavers to a section? Or consider edging your driveway, giving it a
crisp, elegant look, not to mention texture, color or just a bit of interest.
Add A Fence
Installing a fence may be a more involved project, but the results can
be stunning. Whether it’s a simple white picket or an elegant wrought
iron fence, surrounding your backyard or home make it looked cared
for and established.
Landscaping
This one is a no-brainer. Plant trees, flowers and shrubs in your yard to
make it more inviting, and cut back bushes and trees that impinges the
view or walk-ability of your property.
Make Your Garage Door Pop
It may seem surprising, but a freshly painted garage door with some
updated hardware can completely change the look of your home – it
does take up a lot of space, after all. For just a dollars, you can take your
garage door from drab to fab.
Face Wash
Sometimes it’s as simple as pressure washing the face of your home.
Cleansing the façade of dirt, mildew and grunge can add up to $10,000
to the sales price of some homes, according to REALTORS®.
Create Walkways
Whether it leads to the front door, the back of the house or the
garden, pathways are charming, pretty and beg to be explored.
Basic Maintenance
Maintaining the outside of your home is a must. Repair and clean
hanging or full gutters, replace missing bricks or stones from the steps
or façade, or repair cracked mortar, freshen peeling paint and replace
cracked or faulty windows and shutters.
Shutters or Accent Trim
Think of shutters as mascara for your windows. They’re already
beautiful, but the shutters and trim make them pop! Exterior shutters
can be made of wood, aluminum, vinyl, composite or fiberglass. New
composite materials, such as PVC resins or polyurethane, make trim
details durable and low maintenance.
Create Symmetry
Symmetry is not only pleasing to the eye; it’s also one of the easiest
things to accomplish. Compositions of fixtures, accents and plantings
instantly boost curb appeal and draw the eye to pretty focal points.v

Water, Water Everywhere
Water is one of the five classical elements, described in many ways around
the world. One thing remains consistent, however, water is calm, soothing and for some, healing. Which is why
water features are an incredible way to make your landscape a relaxing escape and interesting hideaway.
Fountains add an element of Zen, with the reflections and trickling sounds, and can totally transform a
space that might have only some concrete pavers, decking and hedges. Here are a few of our favorite ways to
incorporate water features, hopefully inspiring you to create a calming space of your own.

Making
Life Easier

By Frances Parrish
We live in the 21st century, where it is important to be
sustainable, healthy and for most people, convenient.
We’ve compiled a list of the newest gadgets for your kitchen
and bathroom that will help you conserve water, provide
sustainable food and simply make life easier.

1. Tulip Bath/Shower
This shower, inspired by tulips and created by
Piotr Pyrtek, is designed for small spaces. The
door of the shower is used as the tub when
not in use as a shower. Patent is still pending
and awaiting a manufacturer. 2. 1 Limit Faucet
This faucet holds one liter of water, allowing
a single person to only use the necessary
amount of water to brush your teeth or
wash your hands. According to the U.S.
Geological Survey, an average person uses
about 1 gallon to wash their hands or face. In
comparison, one gallon is equal to a little less
than four liters.
3. LG Refrigerator
This refrigerator has a mind of its own –
literally. It can monitor your food to let you
know when food is expiring as well as what
food you have on hand. This allows you
to be less wasteful and more conscious of
consuming before buying more. The LG
Refrigerator is part of HomeChat, a software
program that can communicate between
other appliances in your home and it can
send a grocery list to your phone, once
programmed.
4. GE Café Series French Door Refrigerator
with Keurig K-Cup Brewing System
With a Keurig K-Cup brewing system built
into the refrigerator’s water dispenser, you
can get fresh, filtered water for your coffee
or tea every time—no need to refill. When
the refrigerator hits the market, you’ll also be
able to download an app that you can use
to schedule the coffee maker to turn on at
a certain time, as long as you remember to
load it up with a K-Cup the night before.
5. LG Twin Wash
Allows you do two loads of washing at the
same time with a separate drawer that can
fit under any of LG’s front-load washers. It
can handle smaller, more delicate loads
while the main machine works through an
44 Urban Home Charlotte June / July 2015
entirely different cycle. When not in use, the
mini washer serves as the pedestal for the
main machine.
6. Wireless Speaker Shower Head
Belt it out during your shower with Kohler’s
new wireless speaker shower head. It
syncs with Bluetooth devices and can be
removed from the shower for charging. The
showerhead not only plays music, but also
has several shower settings, similar to other
showerheads. The speaker can also be
transported to other rooms in the home for
listening pleasure.
7. Self-Sterilizing Door Handle
The door handle sterilizes itself to keep germs
from spreading. When the door handle is not
in use, it triggers a spring that turns on a UV
light to sterilize the handle. When the door
handle is in use, the spring turns off the light.

BIG
Small spaces can be difficult to design, but just because there is less square
footage, doesn’t mean your room has to look small. Optical illusions trick
the mind into thinking something is there when it’s really not. So, don your hat
and cape, and wave your magic wand – here are some simple ideas that
will make your small space seem big.
Small Spaces with Big Design
By Frances Parrish
Sergei Mengot
One Kind Design
Color Ruse
Painted walls can help divide a small space like a loft or studio into
separate defined areas. A light wall color in the kitchen, like yellow,
can brighten the space and complement natural light from windows. Be
conscious of too many different colors, however, which can be overwhelming
in small rooms. Use neutral tones with pops of color that unify each
room. If you have an unusually small room or awkward space, white
walls are a simple and perfect solution for adding an airy feeling.
Smoke and Mirrors
Use natural light as much as you can – it’s an instant room enlarger.
Mirrors will help reflect the natural light and bounce it all over the
room, making it appear bigger and brighter.
Trick the Eye
If space is scarce and furniture selective, use pieces that are multifunctional like a daybed as a couch, and ottoman as a coffee table or a
dresser with drawers for storage as a TV stand.

Design Interior 2015
Disappearing Act
Clutter in small spaces only accentuates the enclosed feeling. Keep
clutter clear of corners and surfaces using simple storage solutions, or
the “less is more” philosophy by keeping only functional items at your
fingtertips.
Set the Stage
Scale your furniture to your space – oversized pieces can actually
make your room look smaller. Statement-makers should be in the form
of color, art or accessories and furniture should remain comfortable,
functional and most of all, appropriately sized for the dimensions of the
room. Furniture is sold in sets because it’s convenient and helpful for
those who lack the time, desire or ability to design their space; to get a
truly perfect fit and curated look, search for those ideal pieces! v

As you enter the community you instinctually
breathe out a long, deep sigh. Although you haven’t been in the car for
long, you feel as if you have already entered a whole new world. The
road winds to reveal lush meadows, woodlands, creeks, stone bridges
and views of graceful horses grazing green pastures. It’s the type of
neighborhood dream many chase—finding an inspiring location that
feels far away, but isn’t really.
Only one mile from I-485 inside the loop and 25 minutes from
Uptown Charlotte, Cheval is located within the enchanting small town of
Mint Hill.
“Mint Hill is not only a charming town, but in the midst of fantastic
new growth,” explains Diane Austin, president and owner of Builder
Developer Advisors. Visitors and residents are excited about the new
hospital being built, as well as new retail including the Bridges Village
Center on 485. A seasoned real estate professional in the Charlotte area
with over 38 years of experience, Austin’s enthusiasm for all Cheval
offers continues to grow. “Almost every day I hear from another excited
visitor who had no idea a place like Cheval existed so close to Charlotte,”
explains Austin.
With lots ranging in size from a half acre to home sites up to 7
acres, Cheval features five unique neighborhoods that appeal to buyers
of all ages and family sizes. The five distinctive villages include: The
Meadows, The Woodlands, Creekside, The Estates and The Enclave.
According to Austin, “A large part of the area’s amazing appeal is the
tremendous range of options available to homeowners. Because of a
feature builder program including so many top builders in the Charlotte
area, there are an incredible variety of plans being offered for budgets of
all needs and sizes.”
Austin describes the passion of Cheval’s visionary developer, Keith
Paris of Paris Projects, “As one of the most hands-on developers I’ve
encountered in many years in the real estate business, Paris’ attention
to every aspect from the overall big picture down to the smallest, yet
important details continues set this community apart.” In front of the
Joli Cheval Equestrian Center, their 50-acre, state-of-the-art equestrian
facility featuring an 8,000-square foot, 24-stall boarding barn, is a
glorious median area affectionately called Daffodil Island. It features the
spectacular result of an earlier planting of 60,000 daffodil bulbs. Austin
shares Paris’ reaction, “Viewing the dazzling display of blooms, Paris
promptly instructed his team to add another 6,000 bulbs for an extra
punch. No expense has been spared for the beauty of this exceptional
community.”
It’s no surprise that the Home Builders Association of Charlotte will
once again bring its popular showcase of new homes, HomeArama, back
to the Cheval community for its 2015 event. The tour will highlight
four homes over one million dollars in the exquisite neighborhood of
Creekside at Cheval from July 18 to August 2. Demonstrating their
fast-paced sales activity, Austin reports, “Two of the homes to be
featured already sold, and the other two aren’t on the market yet.”
The Cheval featured builders for the HomeArama event this year
are Arcadia Homes, New Old Luxury Custom Homes and the Ullman
Group. The exquisitely furnished and decorated homes will range
from almost 5,000-square feet to more than 7,000. “This year’s show
will once again be full of new trends in the housing market and great
decorating and design ideas. Also look for innovative ideas for outdoor
living areas and new elevation trends,” said Austin.
With over 423 captivating acres and 237 homesites, Cheval truly
captures the beauty and romance of its breathtaking landscape. Built
upon what was once treasured farmland, two historic restored silos
greet homeowners and visitors as they enter the community, adding
to its charming and nostalgic tone. Its five private parks abound with
miles of unspoiled walking paths and scenic riding trails. Residents can
also enjoy magical butterfly and hummingbird habitat areas along with
meadows filled with exotic wildflowers.v

Modernize with the
World’s Largest Tile
By Dana W. Todd
54 Urban Home Charlotte June / July 2015
Crossville has announced the most exciting
development in tile since it became the nation’s first manufacturer
of large-format porcelain tile. With its new Laminam by Crossville®
porcelain panels, Crossville is manufacturing tile in the largest size the
marketplace has yet seen.
Laminam is the world’s largest, thinnest tile, available in 1x3 meter
and 1x1 meter porcelain panels. Think of wrapping the walls and floor
in a skin that is beautiful, clean and contemporary. A positive benefit
of using such large tiles on the floor, countertop or shower walls is the
minimization of grout lines. Fewer grout lines with an extremely low
profile because of its ultra-thin design, Laminam is a smart choice to
modernize a home. Who wouldn’t love less grout to clean and maintain?
“Laminam has a high-end look with low maintenance and is sleek
and clean, which is perfect for a modern or contemporary home,” says
Crossville designer Jillian Ledford. “With the properties of porcelain
tile, you can install it on fireplaces, walls, floors and countertops.”
Laminam is available in three collections:
•Foundations, which highlights traditional textures using solid
colors and replicating materials such as cement for a speckled effect
•Natural Inspirations, which takes its cues from stone like Carrara
marble and wood
•Urban Influence, a tribute to the modern mix found in city life,
including metallic iterations and a linen-look series.
“There is a movement in tile design to a larger format,” says designer
Mattie Shannon of Crossville. “More tiles are becoming available in a larger
and thinner size. The larger tile helps with disappearing grout lines.”
Texture is all the rage in today’s tile trends, and Laminam’s Urban
Influence textural tile is not alone in this category. Although available in
a smaller size, Crossville’s Ready to Wear porcelain tile products sport
the look and feel of fabric, in eight colorways. Mostly neutral with a
hint of color, Ready to Wear tile is perfect for a spiffed-up laundry room
floor or anywhere you’re looking for warp and weft detail or a hint of
shimmer.
“You can dress up or dress down your designs with this collection,
just as you could style an outfit with a favorite pair of jeans or a great
tweed blazer,” says Crossville VP of Marketing Lindsey Waldrep. “It’s
really versatile.”
As exemplified in the Ready to Wear product line, Ledford and
Shannon say most color trends lean toward creamy whites and beiges,
some with a touch of gray. Metals are in demand and not limited to
chrome and stainless but include copper and brass as complements to
eclectic Mid-century Modern design.
“It’s all about the timeless look,” Ledford says. “Less is more, and
larger tiles and neutral colors are part of that style.”v

floor plans
choosing the best
By Laura Jackson
58 Urban Home Charlotte June / July 2015
Since the journey of building a new home
involves a multitude of decisions and details all along the way, it’s
essential to get the best start possible. Beginning with the right floor
plan is key to guiding the entire process. Mitch Genda, president of
Paragon Homes and the franchise owner of Arthur Rutenberg Homes
in Charlotte, describes the difference of a truly livable plan. “Finding a
house plan that integrates how a family actually lives within its design is
critical,” he explains. “Today’s consumer is looking not only for quality,
but also for floor plans that reflect the way we live in our homes.”
Mitch outlined five important questions to consider when choosing
your floor plan:
Is it functional?
Genda’s experience has shown that consumers want home plans
designed around a family’s daily activities in their home, instead of
what may have been simply expected or accepted in years past. There’s
so much more to plan for than merely the number of bedrooms and
bathrooms needed. For example, more predictable plans often featured
areas such as closed formal living and dining rooms that can make a
home feel compartmentalized. Today, most homeowners want their
homes to feel more open, and there’s greater attention placed on the
way rooms can seamlessly flow into one another.
“Connectivity in a home has become an
important focus,” describes Genda. “Not only
do people feel the need to stay more connected
through technology and social networking, but
also in their home environments. That often
translates to wanting areas that easily adapt to
cooking and conversation in the kitchen while
still staying connected to family members in an
adjoining Great Room.”
Feeling connected to the outdoors is also an
extremely important adaption to today’s most
popular home plans. “Bringing the outdoors in
and creating a more natural flow between the two
continues to grow in importance,” said Genda.
Is it efficient?
Modern efficiency means finding a plan that
allows for multi-functional spaces. “We try to
think through how our homeowners live and
function during a typical day,” explains Genda.
“Creating a central work zone in a home, often in a laundry or mud
room, that provides areas for charging phones and computers, checking
schedules and perhaps even an arrival bench with a place for shoes, can
really change a home’s overall organization and efficiency.” Instead of
separate movie rooms, many homeowners are instead designing multifunctional entertainment areas that can serve as their big screen TV and
gaming space, but also include other entertainment options as well.
Is it personal?
Think about the areas where you spend the most time in your home
and make sure your new home plans fit the way you live. Consider
making a list of all the items you wish were different in your current or
past homes. Does a lack of closet space cause constant frustration? Do
you have the right balance between open and private spaces throughout
your home? Perhaps it always seems as if you need extra seating in your
main living area.
“Proportions and the sizing of rooms are critical,” describes Genda.
“The real size scaling of furniture on a plan makes a huge difference in
judging the practicality of a plan, and many plans do not account
for that. Furniture placement and traffic flow in a room need to be
high priorities.”
Is it proven?
Although ultimately you want a plan that fits your individual needs
and goals as specifically as possible, it still helps to know what has
worked for others in the past. The value of finding a company with
a proven track record and happy customers cannot be understated.
Paragon Homes, an award-winning builder, is also an independently
operated franchise of Arthur Rutenberg Homes, another respected
name in homebuilding since 1953.
According to Genda, “In designing floor plans, we spend a lot of time
working and reworking a plan until we get it perfect for the homeowner.
However, it really helps to start with a home plan that we know has
worked well in the past, and then begin individualizing it from there.”
Beyond choosing the right plan, it’s also important to understand
how to choose the right plan for your particular lot. There are so many
factors to consider such as site orientation, understanding the property’s
slope and topography, ensuring the best lighting throughout the day,
and even how the site looks when you’re pulling in the driveway.
Utilizing the benefit of experience can mean the difference between
choosing a house plan that looks good on paper and one that functions
as the basis for the home of your dreams.
Is it inspired?
Creating a home is so much more than the sum of its parts. A
reliable floor plan that integrates function and elegance is a vital starting
point. Genda believes, “It’s not just about getting the details, but also
about placing them in the right places for the best impact.”
Just as we would never travel to a new, daring destination without the
best directions we could find, the journey to your ideal home requires a
floor plan that blends your specific needs with captivating design.v

Contributing Editor | Building a Better Home
To Skimp Or To Splurge
trent haston
Sometimes budgets are
unrealistic, but most of the
time, it’s just a matter of
finding ways to cut costs.
Managing budgets is a big part of the
construction process. It’s common for us to meet
clients and bid a plan, only to return an estimate
that is over their budget. Sometimes budgets are
unrealistic, but most of the time, it’s just a matter
of finding ways to cut costs. This is a tricky part
of the process because there are some reasonable
things to skimp on and then there are things that
are simply better when you splurge. To skimp or
to splurge? That is the question. Here are some of
my answers.
LIGHTING
SPLURGE! Lighting costs can be a big part of
budget, especially on a kitchen or bathroom
66 Urban Home Charlotte June / July 2015
remodel. Recessed cans, accent lighting and
decorative fixtures can be expensive, but they can
really make all the difference in a room’s mood and
functionality.
INTERIOR DOORS
SPLURGE! I have always said this, but nothing
gives a quality feel to a home better than nice
solid natural doors. It can be really tempting to
skimp in this area and go with the hollow synthetic
alternative, especially when you figure the price
difference and multiply that by the number of
doors you’ll need – but don’t do it! Solid wood
doors are a must if you want your home to have
that Cadillac feel.
Photos Courtesy of David Ramsey Photography.
APPLIANCES
SKIMP. Now, I’m not saying go with the cheapest appliances, but if
you’re not going for a commercial caliber kitchen (i.e. Subzero, Wolf),
there are some great options at lower price points. Most brands have
lines that look great and do the job, but are a fraction of the price of
some of the higher-end ones. When costs have to be cut, this is a good
place to do it.
TOILETS
SPLURGE! Toilets can be such an afterthought, especially when you’re
making other more glamorous selections for a bathroom remodel. Most
people think a toilet is just a toilet. But if you’ve ever experienced one
that barely flushes or feels uncomfortable, you know it (and hate it).
Since it’s one of the most used parts of your home, you better get one
you love. When it comes to toilets, it’s all about a good flush and bowl
shape. The pricier versions are just better in these two areas.
GRANITE
SKIMP. What I love about granite is that it is long-lasting and virtually
maintenance-free. The other thing I love about it is that there are so
many different colors and patterns to choose from. Since granite is a
natural product, prices are based on current rarity and demand. The
good thing is, you can get beautiful granite at every price point. You
may really love a particular type, only to find that it is very expensive. I’m
willing to bet, with a little looking, you can find something very similar
for a fraction of the price.
TILE
SKIMP. Similar to granite, tile comes in so many shapes, styles and price
points. Since tile is often used in many applications in a home (think
floors, backsplashes, bathroom surrounds, etc.) tile costs can get high
pretty quickly. If costs need to be cut, I think it’s a good idea to use what
you really love in high visibility places (i.e a kitchen backsplash), but
skimp a little in areas that aren’t used or seen as frequently (i.e. laundry
room floor).
PAINT
SLURGE! This seems to be the first area people want to cut in their
budgets, but I always advise against it. I’m not talking about the actual
paint itself, but the caliber of the painter instead. Painting is all about
the prep work and painting method. Cheap painters will often cut
corners in their prep work and choose quick application over quality.
The seemingly simple job may make you think otherwise – wanting to
save money here – but you will see the difference in the final product.

the greater community.
However, LaCa Projects’ bragging rights go beyond awards and
anniversaries. Its commercial gallery has a no-profit motive, making it
one of the most unique cultural ventures of the Southeast. The gallery
exclusively showcases Latin American art, representing contemporary
emerging and mid-career artists as well as works by established and
master artists. “Clients who purchase artwork from our gallery can feel
really good about LaCa Projects’ commitment not only to its artists, but
70 Urban Home Charlotte June / July 2015
to causes that support important Latin American-focused initiatives –
artistic and otherwise,” says Neely Verano, gallery director. “We strongly
believe that our work is contributing to a change in existing perceptions
and stereotypes of the Latin American community.”
Verano and LaCa’s founder – a local executive, native of Argentina
and a longtime collector of art – are currently planning for LaCa’s third
and final phase, to be completed later this year. It will be an authentic
Latin American café offering coffee, wine, tapas and a whole new set of
cultural tangibles to complement the art on its walls.
LaCa Projects spans more than 5,300-square feet and is located off of West
Morehead Street at 1429 Bryant Street, just five minutes from Uptown
and two blocks from the Wesley Heights neighborhood. Gallery hours are
Tuesday-Friday from 10-6 pm, Saturday 12-5 pm, and by appointment.
LaCa can accommodate corporate and private events of all sizes and types.

Myth vs. Reality
Catherine
Whitney
With so many resources
for information, it’s
easy to get confused
and overwhelmed.
In my 31 years as a kitchen design
professional, I have learned that educating my
clients on a variety of aspects of their renovation
is invaluable. Preparing my clients to make
good decisions through education and planning
ultimately contributes to the success of the project
on all levels. As in every aspect of life, the design
industry is constantly in flux. In my opinion,
knowledge is the best tool to have in your arsenal,
and ultimately it’s the one that benefits both the
homeowner and the design professionals with
whom they work.
I am sure every industry has their myths and
mine is no exception. With so many resources
for information, it’s easy to get confused and
overwhelmed. Here are two of the biggest myths I
72 Urban Home Charlotte June / July 2015
battle with and I’d like to debunk them for Urban
Home readers.
Myth #1: “A kitchen renovation is just too
expensive.”
Reality: Guess what? You control your
budget, so be upfront with your kitchen design
specialist from the beginning. There are many
costs associated with a renovation and you should
be aware of the bottom line as soon as possible;
communication with your specialist will expedite
this. From the first meeting, you and your design
professional should be aware of (and on the same
page about) your comfort level with the overall
expense of the project. As in the automotive industry,
in the cabinet industry there are many companies
that have a wide range of prices from high to low.
The reality is that you are
ultimately in charge of
everything that happens on your
job because it’s your home
and you must approve.
Here are just a few guidelines on pricing: • A simple door style with a basic stained finish will be less expensive
than a heavily carved door style with a painted, distressed and
glazed finish.
• If your appliances and sink have several years of wear left, then
re-using them in the new design/renovation can be cost-effective.
• Countertop selections can also be “value-engineered” by using simple
edge treatments and colors that are stocked in a standard thickness.
If you’re in need of a small piece for an island, you can always inquire
about a remnant from your fabricator. Remnants are usually a good
deal as compared to purchasing an entire slab of material.
Like assembling a great outfit, you can select your “prize pieces” and
then re-purpose other materials to be budget conscious while still looking
your best!
Myth #2: “If I hire professionals, I won’t have to be ‘hands on’
during my renovation.”
Reality: Unfortunately, the homeowner’s involvement is necessary
throughout the project. The professionals are there to coordinate,
advise and execute your plan, but a renovation is a complexity of
ideas, coordination of materials, labor and design. Everyone has high
expectations and is working towards your dream kitchen. There will be
instances where changes will be needed because of unforeseen situations.
The homeowner’s approval is always needed on any changes and should
be submitted and approved each and every time in order to keep track of
any expenses over budget. Sometimes appliances that were selected when
the design process began are no longer available at the time of order and
an alternate needs to be approved by the homeowner. There are times
when what looked good on paper needs to be modified on the jobsite to
achieve a better asthetic – another homeowner approval situation. The
reality is that you are ultimately in charge of everything that happens on
your job because it’s your home and you must approve.v

Amped Up Neutrals
BETH KEIM
Designing interiors
in an all-neutral palette
doesn’t have to be dull,
by any means. When asked to create an open concept
great room and breakfast room in neutrals with
just a touch of color, I find it’s sometimes hard to
reel myself in – I tend to layer color on color and
pattern on pattern. However, I also love the look
of a tone-on-tone room with a dramatic pop of
something saturated. My client for this project was
all about neutrals and thus, so was this space. She
wanted clean, streamlined and soothing; on the
other hand she loved color and wanted that punch. She had a blank slate to work with and for this large
room that opened into the stairwell, kitchen and
foyer, a single wall color was the way to go.
Designing interiors in an all-neutral palette
doesn’t have to be dull, by any means. Various
textures in similar colors create a modern look,
and can end up feeling luxurious. Working on this
great room, I needed to be conscious of the newly
painted space, which was a beautiful shade of grey. Their big request was a new sectional that worked
with their existing grey leather chairs. I chose to
keep all the shades similar and really focus on the
80 Urban Home Charlotte June / July 2015
accents. Bright pillows and a simple ottoman tray
brought everything to life. Open to the breakfast
area, a new banquette in a kid-friendly “pleather”
(also in a neutral shade) comes to life as well with a
large art piece, created by my husband Keith Keim.
The most important thing in any space, and
especially a tall, open concept space is accessorizing
on a large scale! Take a look at the lamps, for
example. I chose to go tall to fill the open-air
space. Bigger accessories and bigger art simplified
in similar colors (but full of texture) is just another
layer every space needs. When working with open
concepts, remember that it will be visible from
many other rooms in the home. I like to stand in
all the doorways and really think about the things
I have chosen. My biggest advice on tall walls is to
use tall accessoriesv
