LANDMARK
Spring Grove was chartered in 1845 as a nonprofit cemetery. Encompassing 733 acres, 15
lakes, a waterfall, and over 44 miles of winding
roads, Spring Grove remains a beautiful piece
of Cincinnati history. In 1987, Spring Grove
adopted its current name of “Spring Grove
Cemetery and Arboretum”. From the beginning, landscape design was an essential part of
Spring Grove’s development. Today, there are
over 1,200 different species of trees, shrubs,
and perennials labeled for study. Included in
this collection are both National and State
champion trees and the patented Spring
Grove Dogwood. In 2007, Spring Grove
was designated a National Historic Landmark,
a distinction that only five cemeteries in the
nation hold. In 2010, Spring Grove started
a horticulture volunteer program. Many opportunities are available including invasive
species control, annual/perennial bed maintenance, and woodland preservation. Please
contact Spring Grove at 513-853-4941 or
vcoordinator@springgrove.org.
The entry gates are opened at 8:00AM and
locked at 6:00PM. The Main Gate only is
open until 8:00PM throughout our extended
summer hours on Mondays and Thursdays
(May 1 - August 31). When visiting the
cemetery, please park your vehicle along the
right side of the roads, keeping the vehicle on
the pavement. Public restrooms, located in
the foyer of the Customer Service Center,
remain open during regular gate hours. For

THE SEDUM GARDEN
Sedums, more commonly known as Stonecrop, are a group of
over 300 species of succulent plants in the Crassulaceae family.
Sedums are a popular, easy-to-grow perennial that provide unique
and unusual foliage and many colors of flowers. The flowers are
typically yellow, pink, or white; and are usually small and star-shaped,
containing five petals. Sedums are drought-tolerant plants that
prefer full sun and well-drained soil, often thriving on slopes.
The Sedum Garden at Spring Grove is a collection of twenty different selections. The sedum leaves are thick, almost flesh-like, and
provide interesting foliage throughout the growing season. Flowering in summer and well into fall, this garden displays an array of
color, whether it be the burgundy leaves of Sedum spurium ‘Fuldaglut’ or the hot pink flowers of Sedum spectabile ‘Hot Stuff ’. The
plants shown in this collection make great additions to any garden.
Sedums are also commonly used as groundcovers, in rock gardens, in containers, or on green roofs. Delosperma cooperi remains
the only non-sedum in this garden. Still a succulent and in the
Crassulaceae family, it is native to South Africa and was introduced
to North America in the 1980s. Fuschia flowers emerge in May
and put on a show through September. This plant is a cold-hardy,
drought-tolerant perennial with a low spreading habit and can be
used as a groundcover.
Also in the Sedum Garden is a contanstly flowing natural spring.
Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum received its name because of the high number of naturally occurring springs in the area
and for the nearby groves of existing trees.
