SEDUM UltraLite Pre-Vegetated Mat
SGT PRODUCT SPECIFICATION SHEEET SEDUM UltraLite Pre-vegetated Mat SEDUM UltraLite Pre-Vegetated Mat EXTENSIVE GREEN ROOF SYSTEM SGT’s SEDUM UltraLite Pre-vegetated Mat is cultivated with our most durable and drought tolerant species of sedum to withstand even the harshest environments (high winds, cold, drought, and heat). SGT’s mats contain 8-12 species of roof top proven sedum which flower at varying times from late spring through to fall; producing colourful star-like flowers of vibrant yellows and pinks to reds and whites. Once blooming has commenced for the season, the foliage colour changes in the fall to create another colourful palate of rich reds, oranges, light greens, and browns. In the spring, the sedum comes back to life out of dormancy and continues this stunning and dynamic growth cycle. SGT’s mats are environmentally sustainable. We produce our mats without soil. In doing so we use less than half the water required by conventional pre-vegetated mat production and less fertilizer, while reducing the messiness of install. Further, SGT’s carrier mats are made from 100% recycled components or decomposable components. During harvesting, no mechanical damage occurs to the roots, meaning the roots are able to penetrate the growing substrate (loose or block substrate system) in a matter of days. SGT’s mats are produced at our greenhouse facility in Prince Edward County (ON, CANADA). Because our mats weigh less than conventional mats, we are able to supply in larger rolls. This results in reduced time for vegetation to fill in between mat seams as well as streamlining the install. Plant species Sedum acre ‘Aurea’ Sedum album sp. FEATURES/BENEFITS • Quick and easy install • Lightweight • Mature and immediate vegetative cover • Rapid protection against wind and water erosion • Minimum of 8-12 different and proven sedum species • Most economical green roof vegetative cover • Minimal maintenance required • Optimal sustainable production methods used • Sedum album ‘Coral Carpet’ Sedum cauticola Sedum floriferum ‘Weihenstephaner Gold’ Sedum hybridum ‘Blue Spruce’ Native meadow plant plugs and sedum plugs can be inserted into sedum mat to customize vegetation and maximize design options. Contact us to create customized mats. INTENDED USES • For extensive flat and sloped roof installs • For eco lawns INSTALLATION SUMMARY • It is necessary to promptly install the pre-vegetated mats once they have been received. Store the mats in a cool place until install. • For extensive flat and sloped installs, Sedum UltraLite Pre-Vegetated Mats are to be installed directly over the installed Substrate Blocks or layered substrate. Substrate depth required for the sedum mats is 7.6 cm (minimum) to 10.2 cm (3 in. – 4 in.). Simply roll out the mat on top of the interlocked substrate blocks or loose substrate, stake into place, and water thoroughly to promote root growth into moistened substrate. Upon install, the mats need to be irrigated regularly to provide the best growing conditions for establishment. Irrigation is not necessary after successful root penetration into the substrate unless during prolonged drought periods. If irrigation is necessary according to the green roof professional, SGT’s Smart Sensor performance monitoring system can be used to detect when watering is needed and remotely activate the irrigation system. For eco lawns, simply roll out the sedum mat onto the existing clean soil, stake, and water thoroughly to promote root growth into moistened soil. The carrier mat the vegetation is grown on acts as a barrier to weed growth from seeds contained within the soil. • • • • Sedum kamtschaticum Sedum pachyclados Sedum rupestre Sedum sexangulare Sedum spurium ‘Coccinrum’ Sedum spurium ‘John Creech’ Sedum spurium ‘Dragon’s Blood’ Sedum spurium ‘Red Carpet’ Sedum spurium ‘Summer Glory’ Sedum spurium ‘Vodoo’ Sedum flexum ‘Green Spruce’ SGT INFORMATION SHEET SEDUM UltraLite Pre-vegetated Mat System Build-up & Technical Specifications SGT green roof system profile VEGETATION LAYER PRODUCT REFERENCE MATERIAL INSTALL MAT THICKNESS STANDARD INSTALL WEIGHT VEGETATION MAT COVERAGE ROLL SIZE* EXTENSIVE GROWING SUBTRATE PRODUCT REFERENCE MATERIAL DEPTH STANDARD INSTALL WEIGHT STANDARD SATURATED WEIGHT NOTES ROOT BARRIER LAYER PRODUCT REFERENCE MATERIAL THICKNESS SURFACE WEIGHT COLOUR ROLL DRAINAGE LAYER Sedum UltraLite Pre-vegetated Mat 100% recycled components or decomposable components 2.54 cm – 7.62 cm (1 in. – 3 in.) 2.44 kg/m2 – 3.55 kg/m2 (0.50 Ib/ft2 – 0.75 Ib/ft2) 85% (minimum) – 100% at install 10 m2 (5m x 2m), 108.2 ft2 (16.4 ft x 6.6 ft) * Size can be modified to suit the install Substrate BlockTM System or Loose Substrate Blend Choice of various block or loose substrate blends (Standard, Lightweight, Shell, Terra Preta, or custom) depending on install requirements. As the system name implies, the interactive intensive systems allow direct interaction of humans with nature; whether it be for leisure (perennial garden with walkways and ponds, break area for staff/residents), urban farming (vegetable production), recreation (parks, tennis court, etc.), or a way to create more usable space (parking garage). Intensive systems are unique in they require extra structural design to support the particular load. For gardens (perennial, vegetable) and parks (shrubs and tree), the depth of the growing medium is greater and requires a complex irrigation system for maintenance. SGT’s team of engineers, scientists, and designers will work with you or your architect/designer to make your roof top vision a reality! SGT’s ECO TURF UltraLite Pre-vegetated Mat is cultivated with our most durable and drought tolerant species of fine fescue to withstand even the harshest environments (high winds, cold, drought, and heat). Because of this, our eco turf requires less maintenance in comparison to convention tuff and sod products. In fact, significantly reduced irrigation, mowing, and fertilizer inputs are realized with the Eco Turf. SGT’s Eco Turf allows for grass to still be used as an economically and environmentally sustainable option. During harvesting, no mechanical damage occurs to the roots, meaning that the roots are able to penetrate the growing substrate (pre-existing soil, loose or block substrate systems) in a matter of days. SGT’s mats are produced at our greenhouse facility in Prince Edward County (ON, CANADA). Because our mats weigh less than conventional mats, we are able to supply in larger rolls. The Smart Sensor System allows for the more efficient use of irrigation water than conventional green roof irrigation systems. 2. Activate the irrigation system to deliver water to exactly where it is needed and the quantity required. Smart Sensors will determine where on the roof water is required and will activate the irrigation system to deliver water to the particular area and in the quantity needed. 3. Monitors roof vitals. Provide the owner with quantitative details about the environmental services the green roof is providing. Smart Sensors monitor the soil and air temperature, membrane temperature, relative humidity, soil moisture, electrical conductivity (an indicator of nutrient status). Smart Sensors provide the end user with useful information, such as concerning how much rainwater is being stored, how much cooling the roof is providing, etc. 4. Increase the performance of the green roof. The Smart Sensor system is designed specifically to create the optimal environment for the plants to grow and flourish; whether it be activating the irrigation or relaying information on the electrical conductivity of the roof. Upon closer inspection, the differences between both systems are very evident. The substrate block is composed of a solidified and dry soil brick contained on 5 sides with a filter fabric/water retention fabric. The filter fabric is mechanically and permanently attached to the underlying drainage layer. Thus, the Substrate Block contains not only the substrate/soil in a dried state, but also the filter and drainage layers, and wind uplift prevention features. SGT has designed the Substrate Block System with accessibility in mind. The Substrate Block System has several features that make it a superior solution to extensive and semi-intensive green roof installs. These features are unique to the block system and include: 1) Instant consistency in substrate depth. SGT produces the Substrate Blocks in depths of 7 – 20 cm (3-6 in.) for extensive and semi-intensive installs. Please refer to our standard Substrate Block dimensions in the chart below. 2) VERY lightweight. The Substrate Block weighs approximately 4 lb/ft2 upon delivery/install. The water holding capacity of the substrate is not compromised with this reduced weight. The substrate in the block is activated after install with water. The saturated weight of 10-20 lb/ft2. 3) Engineered to withstand horizontal and vertically applied forces. This allows for the successful install of green roofs not only on flat roofs but also on 12/12 pitched roofs and vertical walls, and anything in between. 4) Easy to install and durable during the installation process. The Substrate Block System combines the features of erosion control mitigation, soil deposition, compaction, and drainage and filter deployment in one step without the need of blower trucks. The blocks are dry and light and as such can easily be brought to the roof height using traditionally shingle lifting technologies. In addition, as the blocks at installation time are ridged, a worker has safely walk on the system during the install process. The Substrate Block System allows green roofs to be installed in half the time, saving time and money. 5) Increased green roof stability and erosion control. The overlap of drainage material and our mechanical fastening system ensures stability on flat and pitched/sloped roof installs. The drainage layer of the each block Interlocks with the adjacent blocks to create a monolithic unit. Further, the filter fabric on the sides of the block contain the substrate, prevent erosion and allow roots to grow freely into adjacent blocks; making SGT’s Block System especially useful on sloped installs. 6) Increased storm water retention. The addition of filter fabric on the sides of the block facilitates a significant increase in storm water retention in comparison to layered or tray systems. 7) Mass produced for immediate availability and customized blocks for particular installs. Contact us to discuss with our team of engineers, scientists, and designers how we can accommodate your unique install needs. Despite being proven performers, expanded aggregates are born from an energy intensive production system which makes them expensive, and not always as “green” as the plants they have been proven to support. Additionally, they are often located beyond the boundaries of what can be defined as locally sourced. After being wholly disappointed in not making any progress towards revealing an alternative man made lightweight aggregate, and being a country across from any natural light weight aggregates, we did what many have done and took a walk on a beach to relax and find inspiration. Find it we did! Many years of research trials later, and several beaches cleaned, we are excited to be able to offer our shell growing medium, designed specifically for extensive vegetated roofing. The unfortunate introduction of Zebra and Quagga Mussels into the great lakes water system has only provided a headache to the indigenous wildlife present. What better way to deal with the negative repercussions of invasive species then to find a sustainable and beneficial use for them. Our shell substrate possess all the necessary physical properties (as out lined by the FLL and regional experiences), especially storm water retention. The architecture of the shells within the substrate matrix serves as micro reservoirs, completely accessible to the plants growing in them for the life of the roof. SGT’s plant production facility located on the shores of Lake Ontario is an ideal location for our collection and reuse of these invasive species. Our SHELL substrate are truly a green innovation in green roof substrate design. SGT’s TERRA PRETA Substrate Blend was inspired by anthropogenic soils located in central Amazonia, created between 500 BC and 1000 AD. As modern experience tells us, most Amazonian soils quickly dissipate as they are exposed to agricultural conditions. The Terra Preta are different however, as they actively saw growth year to year with a matching amount of agricultural yield. The indigenous peoples thoughtful application of purposefully produced char (biochar) has in modern times been shown to endow the soil with many benefits; benefits which every green roof growing medium could prosper from. Biochar has an ability to dramatically reduce nutrient run off, to improve the soil's water holding capacity, to provide a more ideal habitat for soil microorganisms, to positively alter the soil pH, to be lightweight, to be sustainably made from waste products, as well as to significantly increase the yield of crops grown on them. After much research, and even more trial and error, SGT in conjunction with the University of Guelph have revealed a green roof growing substrate which possess many of the ancient and beneficial properties, and akin to the Shell Substrate Blend, we can produce it on our own turf. SGT’s Terra Preta blend is ideal for all extensive, semiintensive, and intensive roofs, but was created with roof top food production on our minds. The design of suitable substrates must take into account several factors, including: the plants they support, the climate of the region, the availability and cost of components, the planned depth of the substrate, as well as the structural integrity of the building which the green roof covers. SGT believes it is essential that options for substrates are realized which reliably support plant growth, while compromising as little as possible in satisfying the requirements of growing on the unique conditions of a roof. The use of locally available and, if possible, recycled components reduce the cost of green roofs and further contribute to the industry's growth and positive contribution to our urban environments. Identification and examination of new component options and analysis of their performance within the greater context of the green roof system is essential. At SGT, we believe that there exists a healthy combination of standardization working in conjunction with necessary project specific variability. We have taken it upon ourselves to become experts in green roof substrate formulation through university-led scientific research over the past 5 yrs., and can create precise substrate formulations which match the requirement of your planned install. All of SGT’s substrates are free-draining, contain low nutrient contact which keep the roof in low maintenance, and have good porosity ensuring effective aeration within the soil. Our substrates are available in both block and loose form. The root barrier layer is optional depending on recommendations or requirements of the membrane manufacturer. Root Barrier sheets are seamless and composed of high strength virgin polyethylene geotextile which demonstrates excellent chemical resistance. This root barrier has a high puncture resistance and excellent barrier properties. The outer layers contain thermal UV stabilizers for long outdoor life. SGT’s Root Barrier Sheets come in three different thicknesses: 10 mil, 20 mil, and 30 mil. Generally, most extensive installs with vegetation growth less than 50 cm require only the 10 mil barrier while semi-intensive and intensive systems with shrubs and trees require 20 mil and 30 mil barriers. In fact, this is the most important step in installing any type of roof. For this reason, we have partnered with Neptune Coatings, the developer of the WetSuit System to provide you with what we consider the best waterproofing product on the market. The WetSuit System is a fully self-adhered, cold spray applied, self-flashing membrane with a wide variety of uses for virtually all above and below grade applications. Due to its instant set time, WetSuit can be sprayed to any mil thickness in a single pass thus creating a truly custom and precise membrane allowing unparalleled architectural freedom and ease of application. WetSuit is the healthier alternative. The water-based, no VOC, low pressure, cold spray applied, non-flammable features of WetSuit eliminate job hazards such as torches, solvents and heavy equipment. WetSuit is unrivaled in its quality and versatility. FM testing proved to put WetSuit in a class of its own. With a wind uplift of an unheard of Class 1-990, the ability to withstand severe hail, Class A Fire Rating, a high puncture resistance and 1600% elongation, WetSuit exhibits unrivalled quality. In addition, WetSuit is proven as a viable Air and Vapor Barrier. With very low perms, WetSuit can be employed not only in below grade applications and roofing, but in between as a seamless, fluid applied vapor barrier as well. WetSuit saves time and money. Because WetSuit is so lightweight and with excellent adhesion to most roof surfaces, the need to tear off existing roofs is most often eliminated, greatly reducing installation costs and environmental impact. Surface preparation is generally limited to pressure washing the old roof to provide a clean surface for WetSuit to adhere to. Utilizing only one applicator, WetSuit can be installed at a fast and efficient rate of 1500 sq. ft. per hour, reducing crew size and job time. WetSuit can earn LEED points for a project. WetSuit reduces construction impacts and releases minimal pollutants. There are 3 categories under which LEED credits can be achieved: • • • Sustainable Sites Credit 7: Landscape & Exterior Design to Reduce Heat Islands Energy and Atmosphere Prerequisite Credit 2: Minimum Energy Performance Energy & Atmosphere Credit 1: Optimize Energy Performance FEATURES • • • • • • • • • • • • • Quick and easy to apply Seamless; liquid applied Any mil thickness in a single coat Non-toxic (no VOC’s UV-stabilized High tensile strength Excellent adhesion Non-flammable Self-flashing 1600% elongation Takes ponding water indefinitely Ideal for LEED projects Proven to perform INTENDED USES • • • Can be applied to vertical, horizontal, and overhead applications For roofing and re-roofing, between slab, below grade walls, tunnels, planters, air/vapour barriers, plaza decks and ponds Other niche applications can be employed Applied by SGT’s certified applicators TECHNICAL DATA FM & ASTM Test PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS PRODUCT REFERENCE WetSuit® Waterproofing Membrane MATERIAL Polychloroprene and emulsified asphalt, water-based MINIMUM CURED THICKNESS SURFACE WEIGHT 60 mils Standard spray thickness of 100 mil; 0.25 cm (0.1 in.) 0.72 kg/m2 (0.25 lbs/ft 2) COLOUR Brown/black NON-TOXIC No solvents FIRE ASTM E108 Class A on 2” slope WIND FM 4407 WATER LEAKAGE FM 4407 Class 1-990 over structural concrete Class 1-420 over hot mopped cap sheet Pass FOOT TRAFFIC FM 4407 Pass PONDING ACCELERATED WEATHER (1000 HOURS, 7 YEARS) No effects after 6 months ASTM G26 No adverse effects IMPACT RESISTANCE ASTM D3746 No effect XENON EXPOSURE 1000 HOURS (UV) ASTM G155 Pass PEEL ADHESION TO CONCRETE ASTM D903 14.74 kg (32.5 lbs.) SGT INFORMATION SHEET WATERPROOFING MEMBRANE Cool Roofs: Reflex™ WetSuit® Top Coat Reflex was especially developed for extending the life of metal, built-up, modified bitumen, concrete, hypalon, EPDM, single-ply, spf or composite shingle roofs. Reflex forms a waterproof elastomeric seal, uniformly covering the textured profile of various substrates to form a monolithic membrane, providing protection from normal weathering, aging and UV exposure. Reflex is a water based, high solid elastomeric coating that utilizes the latest advances in acrylic technology. Premium quality acrylic resins are combined with reinforcing laminar pigments, an effective biocide package and non-migrating fire retardants, resulting in superior durability, weatherproofing, ultraviolet resistance, algae/mildew resistance and fire retardancy. Reflex white is highly reflective, permanently flexible “breathing’” membrane, allowing moisture vapor from the substrate or building interior to escape while remaining impervious to mass water penetration from the exterior. Reflex is energy efficient. Reflex is certified to meet Energy Star, Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) and LEED reflectance and emissivity criteria.
