Training Mythunderstandings: Choosing Bits
covered, pressure-sensitive cartilage. Between the bars, the bit lays across
and presses against the horse’s tongue. Depending on its shape and adjustment, a bit can also put pressure on the horse’s lips and on the roof of
its mouth. Pressures on the lips are the least effective because the lips are
an unstable surface and easily injured.
The first thing to look at on any
device you put in the horse’s mouth
is its contact area—the size of the
area that actually touches the horse
and transmits pressure or feel. When
trainers talk about “pounds of pressure” on a bit, they are really talking
about pounds per square inch of
pressure over this contact area. The
thinner the bit, the less contact area
it has and the greater the pounds per
square in of pressure. The thicker the
bit, the greater the contact area and
the lower the pounds per square inch
of pressure.
Put another way, the thinner the
bit, the more noticeable any pressure
on the bars will be. With a thicker
bit, the same amount of rein pressure will be less noticeable. So the
effective size of the mouthpiece is the first thing to look at because it will
determine how noticeable the pressure you apply will be. Rough bit surfaces such as twists reduce the area where pressure is felt much like
rough tread reduces a tire’s surface area where it meets the road.
The second thing to look at is whether the mouthpiece is straight or
By Ron Meredith
President, Meredith Manor International Equestrian Centre
Bits are one of the most MythUnderstood pieces of horse equipment
man has ever invented. The things that people think they’re supposed to
do with a bit in a horse’s mouth are unbelievable.
All to often, the human take on the situation is that a horse is a big animal, therefore
the pressures needed to control it must be big
and strong. That’s a myth. A rocket engine is
controlled by tiny bits of information being
fed one at a time by a computer. Each of those
bits is either a “zero” or a “one”. The bits
flow in a pattern called a program that the
rocket understands. Same thing with a horse.
All it needs are tiny bits of information fed
to it with the right timing to get with the program.
There are very few surfaces where the bit
can apply pressure. So it takes some pretty
complex applications of pressure to those few
points to create complex communication. The
bit must be shaped in such a way and fit properly within the mouth so horse is able to understand what the communication is. Therefore a bit must be both directional and horse logical. It must not cause any injury which will result in
temporary numbness.
The area in the horse’s mouth where a bit communicates our pressures
most effectively to the horse is called the bars. These gaps between the
front teeth and the back teeth on either side of the jaw consist of tissue-

non-leverage bit. Because of this exaggerated pressure and release, curb
bits impede true feel and understanding between you and your horse.
Curbs are also nondirectional. Their pressure is felt
as a clamping between the horse’s chin and the bars of
his mouth, and therefore can convey minimal direction
to the horse. If you use a chain, the pressure is more
noticeable underneath the chin. If you use a thick leather
strap, the pressure is more noticeable on the bars of the
mouth. In most cases, curb bits are used as a signaling
device rather than as a training device to help the horse
learn to shape himself correctly.
One of the biggest mistakes everybody makes is picturing the bit by itself. The bit is only part of the overall
corridor of aids you use to create the shapes you want
the horse to take. You do not want the bit to be louder
than your legs or seat. You don’t need a big bit to get the
horse’s attention and you don’t need a big bit to get the
horse stopped. You just need to know how to use a bit to make it understandable and directional to the horse.
Whenever you see a horse fighting the bit, he has lost feeling for the
rest of the aids. It is just like two people who speak different languages
raising their voices louder and louder in an effort to be understood.
Rhythm, relaxation and repetition are the cornerstones of good training.
Choosing bits continued from page 6
whether it is shaped so it relieves the pressure on the tongue. If the bit is
straight, the horse’s tongue absorbs some of the pressure and the horse will feel less pressure on the bars.
The bars are the only places in the mouth we can use
to communicate an understandable directional pressure. If the mouthpiece is hinged or grooved so it relieves pressure on the tongue, the bit is more noticeable on the bars of the mouth and gives more directional guidance.
A tongue groove and a port are not the same thing.
A tongue groove is a shallow, raised indentation in the
center of the mouthpiece only high enough to relieve
tongue pressure. It allows the bit’s pressures to be felt
on the bars. A port is a raised groove or attached spoon
so tall that it puts pressure on the roof of the mouth
when the shanks of the bit are rotated by pulling on
the reins. If you could park a little boat in it, it’s a port. A port is severe
and nondirectional and cannot teach the horse anything.
The third thing to look at is whether the bit has leverage. The way to
measure leverage is to compare the distance from the mouthpiece to where
the reins attach to the distance from the mouthpiece to the curb chain (or
strap). Most curb bits have a 3:1 leverage ratio. That means if you put 10
pounds of pull on the reins, the horse will feel 30 pounds of pressure
squeezing his mouth.
Leverage decreases the amount of time it takes for the horse to feel bit
pressure. If you have a bit with 3:1 leverage, the horse feels 10 pounds of
pressure three times faster than he would if you applied 10 pounds of
pressure with a non-leverage bit like a snaffle. To make this kind of bit
pressure understandable and horse logical you would have to soften the
pressure to reward the horse three times as quickly as you would with a

ing. First we
show them what
we want them to
do. When we’re
sure that they understand what we
are
showing
them, we begin to
ask for it. When
the horse consistently does what
we ask, he has
reached a level of
sophistication
where we can tell
him what we want
and expect to get
the correct response every
time. At this stage
in the horse’s training, if he does not do what we tell him to do, we can
enforce our request with stronger aids without upsetting his training program one bit.
If the horse bucks or backs because his equipment is hurting him, it
would be unjust to enforce our request. However, if he’s bucking because he’s having a tantrum or shying at the barn cat out of high spirits
and we fail to enforce our request, we reinforce the evasion. Today’s
evasion quickly becomes tomorrow’s bad habit.

Bucking, shying and other
attention deficit disorders
By Faith Meredith
Director, Meredith Manor International Equestrian Centre
There may be a few enthusiastic riders out there who look forward to the challenge of riding their horse through a fit of bucking or shying when they mount up. Most of us, however, would
prefer that our horses never did either one while we are on their
backs.
Whenever horses start behaving badly, we try to give them the
benefit of the doubt. The horse that bucks may have a saddle or
girth that’s pinching him uncomfortably. Or he may simply be
high on life and feeling really good. The horse that shies may be
hypersensitive to noise or reacting to the excitement of a windy
day. Or he may be in need of a lot of patient “spook proofing” to
build his confidence and recondition his responses to unfamiliar
sights and sounds. The horse that backs full speed across the
arena when his rider asks him to go forward may be trying to
escape a severe bit or a rider’s unrelenting hands.
More often, however, behaviors like bucking, shying, standing up or
that unrequested backing are the horse’s way of evading something the
rider has asked him to do and that he understands perfectly well how to
do. If the rider does not recognize what has happened and take measures
to correct it immediately, the horse learns that evasion has its rewards.
He doesn’t have to do whatever it was he didn’t want to do. Better yet, if
he frightens his rider badly enough, the lesson may end altogether. What
a deal!
In our training program, we take horses through four stages of learnFEED DEALERS continued

Bucking continued from page 6
The best way to deal with an evasion is to ride the horse forward assertively. The idea is to channel the horse’s evasive energy into forward
movement. The average rider finds this a scary thing
to do when their horse is behaving badly, however.
And if they don’t have an independent seat, they
may not be capable of riding the horse forward assertively. Their fears allow the horse’s evasion to
succeed and a bad habit gets started. Our students
get a lot of experience riding horses like these when
discouraged owners send their horses to Meredith
Manor for “reform school.”
Upper level riders like a horse that’s bursting with
energy because they can direct that energy into the
horse’s work. Less skilled riders may want to make
sure an energetic horse has plenty of turnout time
during the day or at least before their riding sessions begin so the horse can spend its excess energy playing rather than
evading. If your horse has developed a persistent evasion, you seek help
from a trainer who can return him to ranks of solid citizens and improve
your riding skills to build your confidence.
The best way to prevent the occasional evasion from turning into a
regular bad habit is to keep the horse’s attention on you at all times.
Attention is a learned habit for both the horse and the handler or rider.
We start our young horses with a groundwork program we call heeding
because its goal is to get the horse to pay complete attention to its handler at all times. At the same time, students learn to put their attention
completely on their horse. If you are physically with your horse but men-
tally thinking about the what kind of pizza you want for dinner or what
song you want to download from your computer, you are not paying
attention to your horse. So why should he pay attention to you?
When you cultivate the habits of paying
attention to your horse every moment you
are with him on the ground and of bringing
his attention back to you whenever it wanders, those habits carry over into your riding.
To ride well, you must pay attention to every stride the horse takes, stride after stride.
When you give your horse that level of attention, you start to automatically pick up
on and correct those small losses of attention on the horse’s part that are the beginning of an evasion. Then a full blown evasion simply never happens.
Just like people, different horses will have
different attention spans. Young horses have short attention spans just
like young children. So their lessons should be short enough to end on a
good note before they get too tired to pay attention any more. Some
horses are more focused while others tend to get distracted easily. Developing concentration—both your own and that of your horse—is a skill
that is just as important to good riding as developing balance or understanding the aids.
Faith Meredith, Director of Meredith Manor International Equestrian
Centre, has joined her husband Ron Meredith in writing articles for the
Centre’s extremely popular series for horse enthusiasts in all disciplines.
Ron’s articles focus mainly on training while Faith’s focus on riding.

If you notice a
change in your
horse’s feet, you
should look at management and other
factors that could
have changed such as
diet, environment, a
new farrier, illness,
fever, stall cleanliness, lameness, or
weather.
Farrier tips every horse
owner should read
Every horse and every hoof is unique. Deciding what is best for you
horse and your horses feet, is an important part of owning a horse. Finding a good farrier that is knowledgeable, on time and willing to work
with you is important.
Consult your farrier and get his advice. He’ll decide if your horse
needs shoes based on a number of factors. Your farrier should ask you
some questions like the following to help you both decide what to do:
•
Does your
horse have on a good
quality bell boot that
fits correctly?
•
What kind and how much work is your horse doing?
•
What kind of footing do you ride on?
•
What is the footing in your horse’s turn-out like?
•
Are your pastures deep and muddy?
•
Do your horse’s feet chip short or grow long when barefoot?
•
•
What time of year is it that you are considering?
Are there any other horses in the field that your horse is not
getting along with, causing them to run around inappropriately?
•
Does your horse have any tendon or ligament injuries?
•
Is your horse being left out for too long and getting restless?
•
Does your horse get abscesses or stone bruises easily?
•
•
Is your horse competing, and if so does he move better with or
without shoes?
Are the shoes that are on your horse the right size, or are they
too big, leaving too much steel out behind him to grab with a
back foot?
•
What is your budget?
If something starts to change, like a new crack or change in shape, you
should be aware of it right away.

Not all shoes are created equal. The best shoe for one horse is not
necessarily the best shoe for another horse. Every horse and every hoof
is an individual. Some of the factors that your farrier should consider
when picking out the right shoe for your horse are the shape of the hoof,
the job of your horse, the type of footing you ride in, and your riding
discipline.

The American Miniature Horse
By Nanette Hughston
The breed of the American Miniature Horse is a result of nearly 400
years of selective breeding. Many historians believe that the Miniature
Horse breed as a derivative of many horses. In prehistoric times small
horse breeds were most likely the products of surviving harsh natural
climates and limited feed. Today, knowledge of genetics has made the
possibility of breeding specifically for size and reality.
Importing small horses to the United States was first mentioned in
1888, with research showing very little public awareness of true Miniatures until 1960. American Miniature Horses utilized the blood of English and Dutch mine horses brought into the United States in the 19th
century and used in some Appalachian coal mines as late as 1950. The
American Miniature Horse, as documented in the pedigrees of Miniature
horse breeds today, also drew upon the blood of the Shetland Pony.
Throughout its colorful past, the Miniature Horse breed has been bred
for pets, novelty, research, monetary gain, mining work, exhibition and
royal gifts.
The size of a miniature horse is usually no larger than a large dog.
American Miniature Horses are “miniature” versions of well balanced
horses possessing confirmation characteristics found in most equine
breeds. Miniature horses can be a large variety of colors and types.
The temperament of the “mini’s” are eager to please, they make a gentle
and affectionate companion for individuals of any age or ability.
The American Miniature Horse tends to be very versatile as a petite
horse. They tend to excel in a variety of disciplines which includes: driving, halter, free jumping, obstacles and many more.
The American Miniature Horse Association (AMHA) is the worlds
nearly 160,000 horses and more than
12,000 members in 37 countries and
provinces.
The association was founded in
1978 promoting the breeding, use
and perpetuation of a standard of
equine excellence in miniature , separate and apart from ponies and other
small equines. Horses that are registered with the AMHA must meet the
Association standard of perfection and cannot exceed 34 inches in height
at the withers as measured from the last hairs of the main.
The organization was created by a group of dedicated horsemen, the
AMHA was created in 1978 in Arlington, Texas. Their goal was very
simple – to encourage the breeding, exhibition, and perpetuation of the
American Miniature Horse. This is separate and apart from ponies and
other small equines.
The AMHA is one of the worlds fastest growing equine organizations
and they continue to grow to increased numbers in registrations, transfers, show entries and increased memberships each year. The American
Miniature Horse Association is currently the leading Miniature Horse
Registy. If you have not had the change to see these amazing horses,
then you need to try to find a farm and go visit, you will not regret it.
These cute little horses are absolutely incredible and well worth a farm
visit.

Keeping a horse in the back yard
By Philippe Wiskell
Is keeping a horse at home right for you? As more people move to the
outskirts of town, many consider keeping horses at home. With a country
home and a few acres of land childhood dreams of having a horse of their
own no longer seem unattainable. But, what does it take to keep a horse
at home?
To begin with, you need to consider where you would keep the horse.
Do you have an old barn? Is it suited for horses? What about space for
the horse to graze?
Older barns can often be converted into horse-suitable buildings. While
dairy stanchions are not safe for horses, many barns have an open floor
plan or pre-built stalls. Stalls should be large enough for a horse to easily
turn around in, about 10’x10' for the average horse. Barn ceilings should
be at least 8' high. Some barns are more easily converted into run-in
sheds which can be left open to the paddock or closed by a gate to keep
the horses in.
If you do not have a barn, you will need to build a shelter. This can
range from a simple two or three sided run-in shelter to a mini barn with
stalls for the horses, space for keeping equipment, and a lockable room
for storing feed.
When selecting grazing land, you should consider that the horse will
need access to water at all times. While a stream or a pond might seem
like a good idea, horses quickly damage the banks and muddy the drinking water. When winter comes natural water sources freeze and can’t be
used.
The best solution is to place a water trough where it can easily be
reached by a hose. Relatively inexpensive, a trough combined with an

year long. Adding a
few feeder goldfish
will keep the mosquito population
under control, reducing the risk of
West Nile.
Unless you intend to supplement
with hay, each
horse requires an
average of 2 acres of grazing land. Because horses can be very hard on
the paddocks, the grazing space should be separated into two areas that
can be rotated to allow the grass to recover.
If your farm is already fenced it is essential to check the perimeter of
the grazing space for places where the fencing needs repair. Barbed wire
is never recommended for horses. Metal “T” posts are dangerous, and
should have plastic caps added to avoid injury. Page wire is safe enough,
but is best with a top rail or an electric wire to prevent the horses from
reaching over it. Split rail fencing can be used, but most old-style split
rail fences are not tall enough or solid enough to deter a horse from
escaping.
When choosing new fencing, take time to consider the variety of horse
safe fencing materials available. While some are more expensive, they

often outlast the cheaper alternatives. A fence for horses should
be at least 4' high.
Over the summer months horses can often manage on grass
alone. However, once the grass thins it is important to add hay.
Hay can be purchased in many types of bales. Round bales are
ideal for feeding in the pasture, but are hard to move without a
tractor. Large square bales are also difficult to move, but can
have flakes peeled off and fed individually. Small square bales
also come in flakes and are easy to manage.
Hay should be stored indoors, whether in the barn or in a shelter. Small
square bales mold easily when allowed to get wet. Large round bales can
be stored outside if necessary, but the outer layers will be spoiled.
Some horses need additional feed to maintain their weight. Grain for
horses can be purchased at the local feed mill by the bag. To store grain
you should keep it indoors, out of the reach of horses. If a horse gets into
a bag of grain it can become very sick and need medical attention.
Not all hay or grain is suited to horses and could cause health issues.
Be sure to specify it is for horses when purchasing feed. Horses should
never be fed moldy hay.
When planning storage, be sure to leave space to store bedding. The
most common types of bedding are shavings, which can be bought in
bags or in bulk and straw, which is sold in bales.
Stalls should be cleaned daily and run-in shelters should be cleaned at
least once a week. Manure needs to be stored in a place where it will not
contaminate any water sources.
Like any other pet, horses require regular veterinary care . Annual
vaccinations such as Rabies, Tetanus and the West Nile are due in the
spring. The vet should also check the horse’s teeth once a year to file
away any sharp points that prevent the horse from eating properly. Quarterly worming will keep the horse parasite free.
Additionally, the horse will require attention from the farrier every six

to eight weeks. If the feet are left too long
they will crack or overgrow and the horse will
become lame. Some horses require shoes, but
most are quite happy when left barefoot.
Horses are herd animals. While some
horses will manage when kept alone, most
prefer to have some form of companionship.
A second horse, pony or miniature is ideal,
but horses will often accept other animals
such as donkeys or goats. Another idea is to keep a friend’s horse at your
farm, sharing both expenses and responsibilities for the animals.
Perhaps the most important part about having a horse at home is the
time you spend with it. Horses are social animals and very much enjoy
the attention we humans give them. Taking the time to groom your horse
several times a week develops a bond that not only is enjoyable, but also
makes the horse a safer, more reliable animal to be around.
Having a horse at home is a lot of work. Between feeding, cleaning
stalls and grooming, most horse owners spend at least an hour a day at
the barn. The horse relies on its owner 365 days a year. It does not understand the difference between a holiday and any other day of the week.
But, having a horse at home is also rewarding. There is nothing quite
like the sound of hooves galloping to the gate to arrive on time for afternoon feed. Morning coffee is far more enjoyable when savored while
watching the horses play in the field. And when life gets you down, nothing is as relaxing as spending an hour brushing your horse.
Horse keeping is not for everyone, but neither is it beyond the ability
of the average person. Ask many questions and take the time to plan and
perhaps you too can have a horse at home.

Win pulling contests with brain, not brawn
By Faith Meredith
Director, Meredith Manor International Equestrian Centre
The average horse weighs at least five or six times the average human
adult. So it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to predict who’s going to win
if they get into a pulling contest. Humans who find themselves in pulling matches with their horses need to learn to use their brains rather than
their brawn to solve the problem. Often, they’re so busy arguing with
the horse that they don’t take time to analyze the problem.
Constant pulling or lugging against the bit is an evasion of a rider’s
poor hands that quickly becomes a bad habit. It’s not obstinacy on the
horse’s part. It’s self-defense. Riders without an independent seat bounce
with every stride, hitting the horse’s mouth with each bump. Really unsteady riders may hang on the reins to maintain their balance. The horse
soon figures out that pulling against this bouncing or hanging stop the
pain. A steady, hard pull eventually numbs his mouth so he no longer
feels the jerking.
Once pulling has become a habit, it takes time and patience to retrain
the horse to trust the bit. Longe the horse in a simple snaffle bit and side
reins that have elastic inserts or rubber donuts for a little give. With the
reins long enough to allow the horse to stretch its neck, work toward a
relaxed, rhythmic trot. Then ask for transitions between the trot and walk,
and finally for cantering with transitions back and forth to trot. The horse
must move forward from driving aids to correct the pulling. If the horse
starts to pull while longeing, send him forward with stronger driving
aids.
Once the horse moves relaxed on the longe in all three gaits without
pulling, put the rider back up without reins. With the horse still in side
reins, work the same sequence of longeing transitions until both horse
and rider are completely relaxed and the horse is not pulling. While the
horse is learning to trust the bit, the rider must work on an independent
seat. That means riding with all muscles and joints relaxed while balancing over the horse’s center of gravity. No gripping. No hanging on the
reins.
Next, remove the side reins and give the rider reins but keep the horse
on the longe line. The person on the ground can help with forward driving aids if needed and the safe, familiar longeing circle helps the horse

stay relaxed. The rider should have steady hands and give the horse
enough rein length to allow it to stretch its neck. The horse must understand that driving aids mean forward and weight aids mean to slow or
stop.
When the rider can ride all three gaits and transitions on the longeing
circle with the horse remaining relaxed and not pulling, they are ready to
leave the longe line and move on.
Training takes patience. Training means developing a communication
system. Each stage may take several weeks depending on the horse and
how ingrained the habit of pulling has become. Be careful not to overwork the horse so that the retraining is a pleasurable experience. Longeing
can be strenuous—20 to 30 minutes are maximum, particularly at the
start of the retraining program. Remember to reward the horse with a pat
whenever it gives the right response.
When the rider has an independent seat and uses the aids effectively
to send the horse forward without hitting it in the mouth, pulling will be
a thing of the past. Whether trail riding for pleasure or training for competition, every rider’s goal should be a horse that is responsive to leg,
rein and weight aids. This takes time and dedication but the end result—
a harmonious relationship between horse and rider—is well worth it.
