active with the locally developed
Math-By-Mail curriculum. Math
practice accompanied by enrichment
activities for the upcoming summer
months. Created by current middle
school math teachers with 40+

in addition to reviewing the
recommended targets suggested by
grade level in the Minnesota School
Academic Standards of mathematics.
Each student will receive a pre-test
in mid-June to assess the appropriate
skill level necessary to strengthen their individual math needs, unlike other programs that are
exclusively grade level driven. Students will receive 8 packets to complete at their own pace
throughout the summer. As students finish packets they are mailed back for feedback and then
returned to the students. All packets are due back by August 14 in order to provide timely

Bella Voce
(Wayzata Summer Girls Choir)
Grades 4-8
Do you love to sing? Would you like to make
music with a group of singers as passionate as
you? Look no further! Bella Voce (bella vo-chay;
Beautiful Voice) is a non-auditioned, summer
girls choir consisting of singers across the district
entering 5th-9th grade. You can expect a week
of emphasis on vocal technique, repertoire that
is both challenging and yet engaging for singers
at this age (types of music performed range
from baroque, to multicultural, to pop), performance etiquette, and building strong, trusting
friendships within the group. At the end of the week you will participate in a concert, featuring
the music you’ve been introduced to and mastered within the week! Bella Voce is founded and
directed by Katie Baker, who has been a middle school choir teacher in the Wayzata district
for 12 years, has provided private vocal and piano instruction to students for 15 years, and has
brought girls together across the district for the past 6 years to participate in Bella Voce. Girls
in this group will not only grow in their vocal and performance skills, but they will experience
a supportive team environment where they can make connections with students in other grade
levels/buildings and with the music, as they can go deeper into the meaning, background, and
context of each piece. Students should bring water and a nut-free snack to each rehearsal. All
participants will receive a performance folder, music, t-shirt (if registration is received by the
23rd of May), practice tracks for each song (these will most likely be links to YouTube links
that students can access at home). There will be a concert on the evening of Friday, June 20;
location and time to be announced. Students will be asked to wear their camp t-shirt for the
performance and will be responsible for having black pants/skirt that cover the knee and black
dress shoes (open-toed and heels are accepted, as long as comfort and ability to walk have been
considered) to wear. $199 for 5 classes; Katie Baker

MN Science Technology
Engineering and Math (STEM)
Program
Gateway Academy
Engineering Summer Camp
Grades 2-5 and 6-8
This summertime camp experience prepares
students for the rigors of high school science,
technology, engineering and mathematics
(STEM) classes. The critical thinking,
creative problem-solving and collaboration
skills that campers learn at Gateway Academy
will benefit them for a lifetime. This camp
uses the Project Lead the Way project-based,
hands on and real–world problem–solving
approach to STEM learning that’s designed
to nurture kids’ imaginations, inspire
creativity and develop self-confidence.
Summer will be here sooner than you think.
So if your child is entering grade seven, eight,
or nine during the upcoming school year,
is curious about the way things work and
is into having fun, learning something new
and making new friends, then you’ll want to
sign them up soon! Each student will create
a t-shirt to take home and be provided with
2 snacks each day. Students may attend one
camp session only. Please call Jean Rakun
at 763-745-6806 or email at jean.rakun@
wayzata.k12.mn.us with any questions. $65
for 5 classes
Center for Academic Excellence (CAE)
is offering the MN Science Technology
Engineering and Math (STEM) Program as
a summer academic enrichment opportunity.
This educational program is for elementary
and middle school students who want to
excel in Math and Science. In this program,
CAE combine lectures, projects and
experiments to support learning, improve
student’s math and science skills, and better
the chances for success in numerous fields
and also meet the demands of our future
work force. We bring hours of fun projects
and experiments to captivate children’s
interest. As each Jr. Engineer/Scientist grabs
their lab coat on the way in, the STEM
adventure begins, allowing them to discover
and engage in their learning. They dissect,
explore, build and explode. Engaging handson engineering projects, and activities like
quizzes, math puzzles, and Interactive Science
Bowl formatted competitions, create an
enriching opportunity for the students. The
sessions keep your child’s math skills sharp
during the summer break through daily
practice drills. Using design and pattern
association techniques, puzzles and games,
students are taught to apply concepts. They
will also learn how to code, create, and run
programs using up-to-date child friendly
programing tools including MIT’s graphical
programming language and projects from
code.org*. This program gives students a legup in their problem solving skills, which are
essential for their MAP/standardized tests.
We are sure, after the program, students
will return home transformed and energized
to learn more of Science, Engineering,
Computer Science and Math. We invite your
child to take advantage of this one of a kind
summer learning experience. *No previous
programming skills are required to learn
the nuances of computer sciences. Students
are recommended to bring their own iPads/
Laptops. Material fee included. $99 for 4

Advanced Engineering: Roller Coasters & Rides
Grades 5-7
Learn about the science behind thrilling Rollercoaster Rides. What makes you feel that rush
when you are diving down a steep hill or rounding a curve? Students working in teams will
be using our K’Nex® dynamic, open-ended, spatial building system, students will build and
experiment with action-packed working models, and then conduct engineering experiments.
Models include different rollercoaster ramps, different looping systems, gravity hills, and other
amusement park thrill rides. On the last day we’ll build and experiment with one of our three
foot tall Thriller-Roller Coasters models. Please bring a nut-free snack daily. $99 for 4 classes;
