Wilson, Executive Director presenting sponsor The Puyallup Tribe to benefit Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium presented by Point Defiance Zoological Society in cooperation with Metropolitan Park District of Tacoma WELCOME to the 17th Annual Zoobilee! After many years of celebrating Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium and its residents, Zoobilee has established itself as a one-of-a-kind fundraising event. The frisky and playful sea otters of Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium lend a paw to the atmosphere of Zoobilee 2007. Our special otters are Homer and Kanai, survivors of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill, and Nellie and Abra, rescue otters from New England Aquarium in Massachusetts. This year be frisky as an otter, take in the lively surroundings and know you are helping make a difference. “We don’t all have to do everything, we just have to do something.” Zoobilee Conservation Efforts This year Zoobilee is striving to be an environmentally friendly event. These are the many ways we have ensured this commitment. LeMay Inc. has supplied resources to recycle and dispose of garbage without the use of can liners. Restaurant and beverage vendors have been encouraged to recycle. Green and recyclable materials are being used whenever possible. Leftover consumable food will be given to the Tacoma Rescue Mission. Thank you for your support of The Zoo Society and Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium’s mission! Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium Conservation Efforts Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is proud to participate in a number of wildlife conservation projects in the United States and around the globe. Most of these efforts are directly tied to the animals represented at PDZA. With its Pacific Rim theme, Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium concentrates on animals from countries bordering the Pacific Ocean. This year PDZA has allocated nearly $100,000 in funding to a variety of conservation projects here and overseas. The money comes from private donations raised through the Point Defiance Zoo Society and the Point Defiance AAZK (American Association of Zoo Keepers) Chapter. Areas supported are the Thailand Clouded Leopard Consortium, Marshall Islands Conservation Action Partnership, the Zoo & Aquarium Alliance, and The Sumatran Tiger Conservation Program just to name a few areas that benefit from the generosity of donations. You can help by visiting pdza.org for more information. DONATIONS The net proceeds from Zoobilee help fund conservation and education as well as the special needs of Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. Projects supported since Zoobilee’s inception have included new exhibits, animal husbandry and care, backup animal care facilities, educational programs, interpretive graphics and scientific research equipment. INFORMATION / EMERGENCY BOOTH Staff in the Zoovenirs tent, located in front of the Gift Shop, can provide information and assistance. In case of emergency, friends and family can call 253.591.5368 to leave a message. You may pick up emergency messages at the Zoovenirs tent. First Aid assistance is available at Security Headquarters located in the Administration Building, or locate an Area Supervisor to radio for support. An adult male may weigh up to 100 pounds, with the average weight being 70-75 pounds. The average female is four feet long, weighs between 50-55 pounds, but may reach 75 pounds. Otters are graceful and playful in the water but somewhat awkward on land. Sea otters are social animals. They live in groups called rafts, ranging from a few dozen to over 100. Rafts are sexually segregated. They spend most of their day grooming their fur to keep it waterproof or searching for food. Their high metabolic rate helps keep them warm in cold water. Habitat Sea otters inhabit rocky coastal areas near points of land where some areas are protected from wind and waves. Although they prefer kelp beds, these are not essential. Northern sea otters are found in the shallow waters off Alaska and the Aleutian Islands, the Commander Islands, the northwestern coast of Vancouver Island, and Washington State. Food The sea otter primarily eats fish, sea urchins, crabs and molluscs such as clams, mussels, snails, squid, octopus and abalone. Sea otters use tools in feeding. They will hold a rock on their chest and beat a shell against it until the shell breaks open. Miscellaneous/Special Interest • Sea otter fur is the densest of any mammal. Air bubbles trapped in the animal’s undercoat prevent skin/water contact. The natural oils in an otter’s fur also help repel water. • At the surface, sea otters float on their back. Alternating their hind flippers up and down or sculling with their tail and/or flippers accomplishes movement. At the surface, sea otters can average approximately 0.5-1.5 mph; underwater they average 1.9 to 2.5 mph with bursts of up to 5.6 mph. presents at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium Happy Feet Friday, August 3rd Racing Stripes Friday, August 10th Over the Hedge Friday, August 17th Charlie & The Chocolate Factory Friday, August 24th Doors open at 7 pm.
