Die ection: Steinschlag-Barriere RXE-8000A Climate change means more rockfall events As a consequence of climate change, the risk of landslides and falling rocks and blocks is on the rise. The increased potential hazard often exceeds the absorption capacity of existing protective barriers. This is resulting in a growing demand for barriers that can cope with higher impact energies. Moderate deflection As well as its high energy absorption capacity, the RXE rockfall protection barrier is also setting new standards in terms of deflection, allowing it to be installed in the immediate vicinity of the object or building at risk. It has been certified to absorb impacts of up to 8000 kJ, which equates to a rock weighing 20 metric tonnes travelling at over 100 km/h. 2 Rockfall on concrete galleries The RXE-1000 to RXE-8000 barriers have been designed to meet the toughest of challenges: they can be utilized wherever boulders are likely to break off or fall from a great height or over a great distance. Areas of application for rockfall protection measures Shown according to impact energy in kJ Fences The high energy absorption capacity of an RXE barrier can be used to enhance existing concrete galleries. They are also an attractive option if topographic or esthetic considerations make it unfeasible to build a concrete gallery or a protective dam. Flexible barriers without retaining ropes Flexible barriers with retaining ropes Galleries Dams 10 Barrier or earth dam? While some 100 metric tonnes of material are required for one linear meter of earth dam, the RXE-8000 requires only about one metric tonne of material per linear meter. Using a rockfall protection barrier cuts the material, effort and installation costs required significantly. 20 50 100 200 500 1000 2‘000 3‘000 5‘000 8‘000 Enhancement using an earth dam RXE-8000 rockfall protection barrier with retaining rope - disruptive - expensive - heavy - transparent - cost-effective - lightweight 10‘000 3 Tried-and-tested components. Deflection During a maximum-impact event, a 1,000 kJ system (RXE-1000) will deflect by only 4.36 m. It is supported, among other things, by two to four catch ropes, pulled diagonally through the ROCCO® ring net. Approval Tested under the toughest vertical drop conditions in accordance with European Guideline ETAG 027 and Swiss guidelines on the type testing of protective nets. www.geobrugg.com/ youtube/RXE-en SCAN IT! 4 Installation • The low deflection of the RXE barrier during a maximum-impact event means that it can be installed closer to the object or building to be protected or on traffic routes. It is therefore simple to install, e.g. using a crane. • Individual components are ideally matched to one another, minimizing the amount of material used. • Pre-assembled components, e.g. nets supplied pre-installed on the posts, speed up the installation process. • Comprehensible installation instructions in the RXE system manual make installation work easier for the construction crew. High-tensile ROCCO® ring net The ROCCO® ring net is made from high-tensile steel wire 3 mm thick and with a strength of at least 1770 N/mm2. It can be perfectly adapted to the terrain and is excellent for absorbing concentrated loads. To absorb impacts ranging from 1000 to 8000 kJ, between 7 and 19 strands of wire are bundled into a ring measuring 30 or 35 cm in diameter. A fine secondary mesh also stops smaller rocks and stones. Baseplates and posts RXE rockfall protection barriers use tried-and-tested components: the HEA posts are an ideal complement to the baseplates, which can be installed quickly and easily using conventional anchors. Brakes In each section measuring approx. 80 –100 m, four U-brakes are installed on the lateral ends of the support ropes. Using U-brakes reduces the strain on the support ropes. Rope anchorages Rope anchorages can be installed using our tried-andtested spiral rope anchors or conventional self-drilling anchors and the Geobrugg FLEX head. These types of anchorage are suitable because they allow the anchor head to deflect by up to 30° while still being able to absorb the full tensile load. 5 Installing RXE barriers: Surprisingly easy and quick. Less work. The time required to install rockfall protection barriers is a key factor in calculating the project costs. This is why we designed the RXE with ease of installation in mind. • The ring nets are pre-assembled, depending on post height, and are supplied in folded packs together with an installation manual (picture 1). • Depending on the barrier type, installing the 6 1 ultra-lightweight baseplates requires only one, two or three anchors. • The HEA profile post is bolted to the baseplate (picture 2). • The lightweight HEA profile posts with preassembled mesh/net are extremely easy to install together with the retaining ropes, either manually or using a crane or helicopter (picture 3). • The U-brakes are only attached at the sides and near to the ground (picture 4). 2 • The support rope is pulled through the folded mesh/net and then tensioned (picture 5). • The mesh/net can be pulled easily over the support rope like a curtain (picture 6). • The mesh and net sections can be connected quickly using shackles (picture 7). 3 5 3 4 6 7 7 RXE-1000 to RXE-8000 rockfall protection barriers. This means that, to provide the desired level of protection, protective systems must be monitored and serviced regularly and appropriately. In addition, events that exceed the system’s calculated absorption capacity may cause damage.
