The Sun-Sentinel’s Local news section is popular
among all reader groups. Different zoned editions
focus on the cities and neighborhoods closest to
readers. Major stories appear in all zoned editions,
but sometimes with different emphasis. Local
news bureaus in key parts of the market ensure

and demographically diverse readership almost

el Sentinel
El Sentinel is the weekly Spanish language
newspaper Sun-Sentinel Company launched
in October 2002.
El Sentinel includes local news and information,
as well as national and international news from
South and Central America, Puerto Rico, Cuba,
Mexico and other nations of key interest to
Broward and Palm Beach county’s Hispanic
community. It features coverage of local events,

Sun-Sentinel directs more than $2 million in cash grants to more
than 100 nonprofit groups through its Marketing/Community
Affairs programs.
CORPORATE DONATIONS
Corporate donations come directly from the Sun-Sentinel. These
donations cover all areas and include some of the most significant
projects in our community. For example, the company donates
more than $300,000 to the United Ways of Broward, Palm Beach
and Miami-Dade counties annually.
SUN SENTINEL Diversity Venture Fund
In September 1999, Sun-Sentinel pledged $1 million over five
years to the United Way of Broward County to establish the
Sun-Sentinel Diversity
Venture Fund, a targeted
fund within the United
Way. The purpose of the
fund is to provide program grants to nonprofit organizations
serving diverse communities and provide training and technical
assistance. Since the Fund’s inception, more than 237 nonprofit
organizations have been awarded more than $1.5 million in
program grants.
PALM BEACH COUNTY Diversity
Venture Fund
Launched in February 2003 in conjunction with the United Way
of Palm Beach County, the Palm Beach County Diversity
Venture Fund focuses new support and resources for groups
serving diverse populations in Palm Beach County. Partners with
Sun-Sentinel Company in supporting this initiative are: Children’s
Services Council of Palm Beach County, JM Family Enterprises,
Inc., Palm Healthcare Foundation, Quantum Foundation and
Palm Beach County.
The Sun-Sentinel Children’s Fund
The Sun-Sentinel Children’s Fund, a fund of the McCormick
Tribune Foundation, appeals to Sun-Sentinel readers throughout
the year to help low-income children and families. With matching
dollars from the McCormick Tribune Foundation and other
donations, more than $2 million will be directed to organizations in
Broward and Palm Beach counties each year.

TIPS
for writing an effective press release
DO
• Include at least one contact name and daytime phone number(s).
• Keep it short, no more than one page, and to the point.
• Give specifics about time, location and cost.
• Submit press release two to three weeks prior to the event.
• Answer the six basic questions: who, what, when, where, why and how.
• Realize that space is limited and not all of your news will be published.
• Call immediately with breaking news.
•Think creatively about how your news could apply to various sections of the
Sun-Sentinel, then send press releases to the appropriate editors or reporters.
•Customize your press release for each geographic zone or section of the paper.
DON’T
• “Bury” the most important information in a long press release.
• Send or fax your press release to the wrong department.
• Call too often; one follow-up call is good.
• Send the release the day before the event (except in the case of breaking news).
• Send the release more than three weeks in advance.
• Try to write the story for us; send the basic information only.
• Use jargon that would be confusing to someone outside your area of expertise.

Remember to include a note at the end of the press release if there is a good photo opportunity involved
with this event.
