The Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center is dedicated to understanding, conserving and championing the grand phenomenon of bird migration. Founded in 1991, staff at the center seek to clarify why migratory bird populations are declining before the situation becomes desperate. Its programs help raise awareness about migratory birds and “understand the threats they face throughout the annual cycle.” The center is part of the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI). The various societies will hold their Council, Board, and Business Meetings at the NAOC Conference. For the most up-to-date list of society meetings and events, please visit the NAOC website at www.naoc2016.com. Dear NAOC Attendee: Please accept my personal invitation to attend what promises to be one of the largest and most important ornithology conferences ever — NAOC 2016! We’ll gather in Washington, DC with its many world-class museums, monuments, and cultural attractions for five days this summer — August 16-20, 2016. Hosted by all of the major professional ornithological societies in the Western Hemisphere, this is YOUR meeting to learn and network with other professional and amateur ornithologists, students, government officials and policy-makers, researchers, and suppliers! An expected 2,000+ attendees will come together for an unprecedented program of pre-conference workshops, stimulating plenary lectures, symposia, roundtable discussions, “lightning talks,” and the presentation of contributed papers and posters — all about birds. In addition to our outstanding scientific program, we’re planning a number of special events — from early-morning bird walks to a late night pub crawl, from a 5K race and a softball game to a bird jam and poetry slam, a quiz bowl, a southern barbecue New Orleans style and so much more! Climate change, land conversion, and a variety of other factors are all contributing to species declines, all threats affecting bird species throughout the world. The science of ornithology and the practice of conservation are inextricably connected; a fact acknowledged and addressed by our Conference theme - Bringing Science and Conservation Together. I urge you to be a part of this vital discussion and to take the opportunity here in Washington to meet with U.S. policy makers, NGOs, and representatives of other countries. Finally, this is your meeting hosted by all of the major professional ornithological societies from the Western Hemisphere. Register to attend, submit an abstract to present a talk or poster on your science and conservation, go to climate night or a roundtable and have fun. All the details and deadlines are in this Meeting Announcement, and on our website: www.naoc2016.com. Please don’t miss this exciting event. Register at the Conference website today and I’ll see you this summer at NAOC 2016. Best regards, Peter Marra, PhD, Director Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute Chair, NAOC 2016 NAOC 2016 Meeting Announcement | #NAOC2016 www.naoc2016.com 4 You Need to Be Here, With Us! ABOUT THE CONFERENCE Held every four years, this premier ornithological conference brings together leading scientists, researchers, students and world experts in the field of ornithology. Originally created with a focus on North America, this NAOC has now expanded to include groups from all over the Western Hemisphere, making it one of the largest ornithological conferences ever held. The NAOC will feature lectures by world experts, workshops, roundtable discussions and interactive sessions and symposia on a vast array of topics such as systematics and taxonomy, reproductive biology, population and community ecology, ecotoxicology and conservation biology. ABOUT THE AT TENDEES For 20 years, the NAOC has united academic and professional ornithologists from a variety of sectors. Over 75 percent of past registrants hold advanced degrees and work for universities, government agencies, bird and wildlife organizations, industry, publishers, private foundations and organizations. Additionally, conference attendees include scientists, professors, wildlife biologists, conservation professionals, environmentalists and students — and they are all committed to the study and conservation of birds in the Western Hemisphere. NAOC 2016 Meeting Announcement | #NAOC2016 ABOUT THE LOCATION— WASHINGTON, DC The conference will be held in Washington, DC — a city rich with historical, cultural and natural attractions including the Smithsonian Institution itself with its vast collection of specimens and great depth of expertise. FEATUR ED SPEAK ER S The conference will feature talks by world experts on exciting and diverse topics in ornithology, including four plenary sessions. WEDNESDAY opening address and plenary speaker Opening Address: David J. Skorton, MD DR. DAVID J. SKORTON began his tenure as the 13th Secretary of the 169 year old Smithsonian Institution in July 2015. Before joining the Smithsonian, Skorton served as president of Cornell University for nine years. Educated as a cardiologist, his research focus is congenital heart disease and cardiac imaging and image processing. He is the first medical doctor to lead the Smithsonian. Before becoming Cornell University’s president, Skorton was president of the University of Iowa from 2003 to 2006 and a member of its faculty for 26 years. Plenary Speaker: TBA THURSDAY plenary speaker John C. Wingfield, PhD DR. JOHN WINGFIELD has conducted research on hormone-behavior interactions, stress responses and environmental control of life cycles for over 40 years, including development of field and laboratory techniques. He is particularly interested in how birds respond to environmental signals (including social) and transduce that information into neural and neuroendocrine secretions that orchestrate morphological, physiological and behavioral responses. Implications for global change and conservation are also major foci. Dr. Wingfield’s lecture is the 2016 Margaret Morse Nice Medal Lecture sponsored by the Wilson Ornithological Society. NAOC 2016 Meeting Announcement | #NAOC2016 www.naoc2016.com 10 FE ATUR ED SPE A K ER S continued FRIDAY plenary speaker Lourdes Mugica Valdés, PhD DR. LOURDES MUGICA VALDÉS is a professor in the Faculty of Biology at the University of Havana where she has worked in the Bird Ecology Group since 1981. She received her PhD and BS in Biological Sciences from Universidad de la Habana (Cuba), and her MS from Simon Fraser University. She has published 68 scientific papers and 16 book chapters, most of them focused on waterbirds in Cuba and the importance of wetlands used for rice production. Her research has prompted Cuban farmers to view waterbirds as an integral part of the rice agro-ecosystem rather than as pests. She has also been very active in environmental education and has organized several environmental education campaigns and capacity building workshops focused on bird conservation and monitoring. Dr. Valdés is the former Director-atLarge in the Society for the Conservation and Study of Caribbean Birds and she has received many awards for her efforts in bird conservation, including the Cuban Academy of Sciences Award, the Whitley Award for Bird Conservation, the National Award for Science and Technology, and the Cuban National Environment Award. SATURDAY plenary speaker Mike Webster, PhD DR. MIKE WEBSTER is the Robert G. Engel Professor of Ornithology in the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior at Cornell University, and also Director of the Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. His research focuses on the social behavior of birds from an evolutionary perspective, particularly focusing on the processes and outcomes of sexual selection. A particular focus is the evolutionary causes and consequences of variation in sexual signals, such as plumage ornamentation and song in birds. Research in Webster’s lab is integrative and examines issues from both ultimate and proximate perspectives, and combines intensive fieldwork with genetic, hormonal and other lab analyses to unlock the secret lives of birds and other taxa. Most of this work focuses on New World Warblers and Australian Fairy-wrens. Dr. Webster received his B.S. degree from the University of California at San Diego, and his PhD from Cornell University. After a Postdoctoral Position at the University of Chicago, Webster moved to academic appointments at SUNY Buffalo and Washington State University.
