FOOTY RECORD ISSUE 22 14 September 2013 $2.00 DIVISION ONE GRAND FINAL Finals Glory Spread Wide By Bob Tregear Lakes in getting their Senior and Reserves teams into Division 2 Preliminary and Grand Finals respectively; and Sanctuary Lakes in having three junior teams in Grand Finals, winning one of them. Manor Lakes also had a junior team in a Grand Final as well as fielding an Under 13 Girls team. Another new start-up club (Tarneit) has already been admitted to WRFL membership for the 2014 season, with every indication that they will also field a range of junior and senior teams from day one. Werribee Districts has also committed to transferring its Senior, Reserves and Under 18 teams from VAFA to WRFL in 2014. The confidence shown by Werribee Districts and the new start-up clubs is a fitting reward for the advances made by the WRFL and its clubs in recent years. With the growth in senior club numbers, there is a very real prospect that a third senior division can be formed as early as next year. A sincere thanks to all of our valued sponsoring partners, without whose support it would not be possible to run a successful league. Particular thanks today to our Division 1 sponsors, Tracys (the A4e Group); and to our Under 18 sponsors and finals venue host, Werribee Tigers Football Club. All of our valued sponsors are featured in the pages of this Footy Record and all WRFL followers are asked to support their respective businesses. Finally, as the curtain is drawn on the 2013 season, congratulations to all clubs on their achievements and contributions on and off the field this year. May the better teams prevail today and may WRFL Football be the winner. Six separate Division 1 clubs remain in the race for success, as we set out on the final day of a fantastic 2013 WRFL football season. Perennial finalists Spotswood eased into the Senior Grand Final after accounting for Sunshine in the Qualifying Final; and for minor premiers Deer Park in the Second Semi. Deer Park earned its Grand Final spot with a convincing win over Sunshine Kangaroos in last week’s Preliminary Final. With a win apiece during the home & away season (both at the opposition ground), the scene is set for an enthralling Grand Final decider between this season’s two stand-out teams. Altona and Sunshine get a chance at the consolation of a Reserves flag in the curtain raiser; while Hoppers Crossing and St Albans round-out the program in the Under 18 Grand Final. Congratulations and best wishes to all six clubs today, whatever the outcome. In Division 2, Glen Orden capped-off a great season with a win over a gallant Parkside in last Sunday’s Grand Final. Parkside took out the Reserves flag with a win over first-year club Manor Lakes. Glen Orden put the icing on the cake by taking out the Under 18 flag in a tight contest with Newport Power in their first year of competition. Season 2013 has marked a turning point in the history of the WRFL, with the injection of two new, start-up clubs (Manor Lakes and Sanctuary Lakes) competing at both junior and senior levels. Both clubs have enjoyed immediate success in different ways – Manor CONTENTS ISSUE 22 SATURDAY september 14th, 2013 Division Two Grand Final Results.................. 25 Div 1 U18s..................................................31-34 Umpires.......................................................36-37 Images.........................................................46-48 Editorial.............................................................. 1 Feature article..................................................3-5 WESTERN REGION FOOTBALL LEAGUE Div 1 Seniors............................................... 7-13 Div 1 Reserves............................................19-21 Wrfl Footy Record League Level One, Whitten Oval, Footscray WESTERN REGION Western LEAGUE Region Football FOOTBALL President: Bill Baarini Ceo: Bob Tregear Editor: Kirstie Fitzgerald Front Cover: It‘s showtime for the WRFL’s Division One competition, when the top two senior teams go head to head in what is set to be one heck of a Grand Final. I am of course referring to the Glen Orden Football Club who claimed the Division Two title by 43 points last Sunday against Parkside. From the moment that the Hawks announced that they were going to be boasting a forward line consisting of Adem and Damien Yze as well as former Geelong and Richmond player Kent Kingsley, in reality every opposition club was always going to be up against it. In the end that is the way it panned out. Damien kicked five to take his season tally to 136. Adem dobbed a couple when the game was up for grabs and whilst Kingsley only bagged the one, his body work and pushing up at the football was an absolute feature in the victory. Throw in four majors from John Zangari and you can understand why Glen Orden reigned supreme on the day. Congratulations to Nick Diker and his men in the brown and gold. She is up at the Caroline Springs Academy helping out every Monday night, and is a regular attendee at our training sessions, and fully deserves this opportunity to umpire in the Division One Grand Final.” Despite running out to an expected crowd of more than 4,000 people, Bianca said she will treat this game like any other. “I’ll just prepare like normal, but the nerves will be on overdrive thinking about what’s at stake and the huge crowd! “My family will be down there to cheer me on, but I’m sure they will be enjoying the two teams out there playing too, so it should make for a brilliant day.” Whilst history will be made on the field this weekend in the Division One Grand Final, another record will be also be made on the sidelines. When 22 year old boundary umpire Bianca Michetti walks out onto the field this Saturday afternoon, she will be etching her name in the Western Region Football League history books, as the first female umpire to adjudicate in a WRFL Division One Senior Grand Final. Having been involved in umpiring at the WRFL for eight years, Bianca said that she was overwhelmed to find out she was selected to umpire one of the biggest matches on the WRFL calendar. “I found out at appointment night, when they put the names up on the slideshow and when I saw my name I was in disbelief....I actually teared up, I couldn’t hold back my tears of happiness and utter shock!” Whilst more than a dozen other female umpires including Monique Auciello, Jessica Lanigan and Mary Wilson have umpired in Division Two Grand Finals and Division One Reserve and U18 finals, none have yet to break into the Division One Seniors Grand Final. “I put in a big pre season and have worked the hardest this year than my previous eight years umpiring,” Michetti said. “Having said that I never expected this to happen as we have so much talent and stronger and fitter boys in the group.” In what has traditionally been known as a very male dominated sport, the interest and participation rate in females has risen over the years, with more than 700 women currently umpiring in the AFL. Having gained extensive finals experience since 2007 throughout all levels, Michetti said she is excited to get the opportunity to promote female umpiring to the greater western region community. “I feel pretty privileged to be the first girl to umpire the Grand Final and it’s a great feeling to beat the boys at something too! “Hopefully this inspires girls to take umpiring up too, as it’s a great sport to get involved in especially if you enjoy watching footy.” WRFL Director of Umpiring, Mark Westgarth said that the choice to have Michetti in the final nine umpires was an easy one. “Bianca’s performance in the second semi final was By: Kirstie Fitzgerald 5 WRFL FOOTY RECORD POINT COOK FOOTBALL CLUB The Committee of the Point Cook Football Club would like to thank our Major Sponsor, Barry Plant Real Estate Point Cook, Platinum Sponsors, Bendigo Bank Point Cook; Peter Davey Toyota and Sanctuary Lakes Hotel along with all other sponsors for their Generosity and Valued support for Season 2013. It is showtime for the best two teams in the WRFL - Spotswood and Deer Park. This is a promoter’s dream - two teams stacked with talent and class about to face off in an epic battle and it will be just that from the first bounce when two quality ruckmen in McGhie and Stewart launch themselves, and their teams, into the 2013 Division One Grand Final. Spotswood are in familiar territory in this, their seventh consecutive Grand Final appearance, and only Will Langlands has played in all of those, an incredible personal achievement. The agony of the one point loss last year to Altona will still be sitting in the gut of some of the Woodsmen. The week off will have done the likes of Tom Langlands, Michael Fogarty, Justin Dorward and Chris O’Keefe (the engine room) no harm at all. There is a lot to like about the Woodsmen with Boyd and McGhie in the ruck, Cloke a key target up forward and Elliot Wood running a tight ship down back. They have pace, skill and commitment. Deer Park looked better last week as every minute of the game ticked over. Some of their players needed some game time and got better as the day wore on. The fitness of Marc Bullen is a key, and while I am sure he will play, if he is not 100% that will be a mistake. Shannon Broadbent is in spectacular form and if he is allowed to run and create he will be a match winner. As Adam Lux rightly observed on the radio last weekend “his left leg is like a surgical instrument” and he could cut Spotswood up. The problem is there is only one of him and he will have his hands full in the middle with McGhie and Boyd. My concern is where the goals are going to come from for the Lions. Their defence is excellent, led by Barling and Hunt, but it is up forward where I see the chink in the armour. I think it will be a pretty tight, close fought, grinding first half but I expect Spotswood to come home flying and take the cup back to McLean Reserve. My tip Spotswood by 15 points, but I‘ve been wrong before. Our pre-season was solid, ensuring that we had plenty of improvement to come throughout the year. The season lived up to my expectations with the assumed improvement in a number of teams showing right from the start of the year. Deer Park, Sunshine, Altona, St Albans and Hoppers Crossing all recruited well and we had to make sure that we also improved to give ourselves a chance at another premiership. The team and the club are looking forward to the Grand Final which will be the seventh in a row, a remarkable achievement given the turnover of players and increased strength of the competition over the years. In saying this, the playing group are solely focused on winning the premiership as it is the only measurement of success at Spotswood. The preparation has been extremely upbeat, especially given that it is new ground winning into the Grand Final from the semi, for the previous six years we have always played in the Preliminary Final. Finally, I would like to thank the President and committee, training staff, water boys, coaching staff, volunteers, players and all our supporters for the help throughout the season and hopefully we can bring the cup back to Spotty tonight. Go Spotty! Chris O’Keefe Spotswood Senior Coach FINAL WORDS FROM THE COACH: DEER PARK The club is very excited to be in last game of the year. The playing group are very proud to representing our local community, all of our sponsors, members, supporters, juniors and Deer Park past players who have been fantastic all season in supporting us. The Deer Park Football Club has been through tough times in the past and we thank the hardworking committee members, sponsors and volunteers that have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to give the playing group an opportunity to lift the cup on Saturday afternoon. The players have been working hard since the end of October and understand that Grand Finals do not come around very often. Spotswood are a terrific side full of class lead by their coach Chris O’Keefe and our playing group are fully aware that all 22 must perform this weekend if we are to succeed. The coaching staff and players are confident that we have left no stone unturned in our preparation for this weekend’s game. The players have done the work and the coaching staff know that if we can execute our game plan, stay consistent over four quarters and when the time is right, strike the killer blow, we will be premiers this year. Held in high esteem by many WRFL players, the Herb Pascarl medallion is awarded to the ‘Best on Ground’ player in the Division One Senior Grand Final. Pascarl was a key figure in the establishment of the Footscray District Football League in 1931, which has expanded into the Western Region Football League. His status at the Parkside Football Club, of which he was a President and Administrator, is legendary and to be awarded a medallion in his name is to recognize the amazing ability and dedication of the player. With both Spotswood and Deer Park boasting some outstanding players contributing to the team week in week out, the WRFL Footy Record profiled the top three contenders from each team who we think are the ones to watch out for today. Foggarty has definitely been consistent throughout the year, leading the clubs ‘one per center’ board for the season. “He’s certainly a very tough competitor,” O’Keefe added. Spotswood aren’t the only ones with some key performers up their sleeve, with Deer Park set to give Spotty a run for their money today. DEER PARK Captain Chris Stewart, is “a game changer” said Coach Marc Bullen. “He’s won games off his own boot”. A well-respected member of the team, Stewart consistently works hard and represents Deer Park admirably. “He’s everything you want in a leader,” Bullen said. SPOTSWOOD Kwame McHarg is the leading goal kicker, with 69 goals for the season. “We’ll be looking to do the best we can and bring home our fifth premiership in seven years,” said playing coach and Herb Pascarl medal contender for the second year running, Chris O’Keefe. This is set to be O’Keefe’s sixth Grand Final at Spotswood and he is certainly keen to bring home another premiership. “He’s got power, endurance and break neck speed, which is everything you want in a footballer.” McHarg, a fellow recruit from Williamstown VFL, has contributed greatly to the Deer Park Football Club and Bullen has been impressed with his skills, even acknowledging McHarg as an incredible asset to the team. Coaching his team to another Grand Final, it’s clear O’Keefe is an inspirational figure off the field at the club, and on the field as a consistent performer throughout the season. As well as having an outstanding coach, Spotswood also have an outstanding captain in Tom Langlands. But it’s not merely the new comers who are set to shine for Deer Park today, with Shaun Harrison also a strong contender to take home best on ground honors. “He’s hard running and super competitive,” said O’Keefe. Langlands missed out on some of the season earlier in the year due to injury but “has worked hard the past few weeks to get his form back,” O’Keefe continued. “Shaun’s a Deer Park boy, he’s just a work horse week-by-week” said Bullen. Returning to Deer Park after playing for Werribee VFL, Harrison has been influential to the Lions stellar 2013 season. This will be Langlands second Grand Final in the green and gold colours alongside Michael Foggarty, who is returning to the club after playing for Williamstown VFL. “He has worked hard every single week and performed excellently in every game of the season,” Bullen said. “Both are extremely competitive, hard running and display a never say die attitude,” O’Keefe said. With the likes of John Farnham, Olivia Newton John and Marina Prior all taking to the stage, it’s clear the task of singing the country’s anthem is no easy feat. Whilst the stage may be a little smaller, the pride and honour of singing our nation’s song is still just as high, with Hoppers Crossings’ very own Phil Golotta takes to the stage this weekend at the WRFL’s Division One Grand Final. “It’s fantastic for the league to ask me to sing, and I think it’s a great honour,” Golotta said. “Having sung the national anthem twice before at the Werribee Cup, I am very familiar with the tune but no doubt will practice it before the event.” But it’s not the first time Golotta will be performing in front of a big crowd, having performed in front of many live audiences in his time as the lead singer of legendary Victorian show group, the Blue Echoes. Since disbanding in 1977, the 74-year-old’s passion for music has continued to grow, appearing on the popular talent show X-Factor last year to a crowd of more than 600 people. “Sponsorship is very important at a club and I do it because I don’t want a young player looking up at that board and seeing that he doesn’t have a sponsor,” Golotta said. But it’s not just his voice that has seen him be successful in the music industry, with Golotta having dipped his toe in songwriting throughout his career, winning numerous writing awards and recently completing his latest album. Whilst his beloved Bombers have missed out on the 2013 finals series, you’re bound to find Phil enjoying the day watching the Hoppers Crossing Under 18s take on St.Albans. So when you’re down to Avalon Airport Oval, be sure to get in early and grab yourself a front row seat to see Fabulous Phil in action at 2:30pm. Whilst it’s clear music is Golotta’s passion, his other passion in life is football. We have played 57 players throughout the year due to injury and have not had a settled line up for most of the season. The standard at reserve level has improved a great deal this year. Sides certainly have improved depth and are more drilled and fitter than last year. In 2012 went through the season undefeated and this year we have lost four games. The standard of reserves football has been extremely high and I believe that anyone of the top five teams can win on any given day. We are extremely excited to be representing the Altona Football Club in the Grand Final. Grand Finals are tough to make at any level of sport and I know our players will leave no stone unturned in there preparation for the game. We have an opportunity to go back to back premiers which would be a terrific achievement for our football club and for all players and support staff involved. The boys are extremely dedicated and are making the most of the two weeks off during the finals. We are making sure that our training ensures we are at our peak come game day. It will take all of the 24 players picked to play their role for us to win. I want to highlight the seven unfortunate players that were not selected for today’s match. Their efforts and commitment during the year has got us to this point and have certainly played a major role in us making a Grand Final. I just want to personally thank all of the support staff for their efforts during the season. In particular our trainers, masseurs, our runner, team manager, water boys. I want to thank Anthony Eames the Senior coach for his ongoing support and Ken Beaton for the effort he puts in to get all of players prepared physically each week. Aaron Freeland Altona Reserves Coach FINAL WORDS FROM THE COACH: SUNSHINE We gave ourselves a goal of finishing top three, to give us the best opportunity to be successful and think we have certainly achieved our targets to date. We have a lot of respect for how the Altona Football Club have rebuilt and become a very strong club with good depth within there playing group. We certainly give ourselves a genuine chance to win and will need all our players to contribute for the four quarters. We understand the challenge ahead playing the reigning premiers, and look forward to meeting it head on. Not too much changed at training ahead of this week, with a focus early around recovery and just fine tuning what we think will give us an advantage. As mentioned we need all 24 players contributing, hopefully that is the case and the contribution is spread across the group. Unfortunately with a strong playing list we will have some good players with great attitudes miss out and our hearts go out to them. A special mention to the four players who unfortunately went down early in the season with knee injuries that ended their year. The off field support has been sensational and hopefully we have a good crowd there cheering us on. As the coach, I thank everyone for their support and am very proud of the club and how we go about things. They say the athlete of today is not an athlete alone, but the centre of a team full of doctors, volunteers and coaches. “I also love the way my boys bond and we become one big family,” Gatt said. This year, 12 coaches from the Western Region Football League have been recognised for their efforts and dedication to helping their teams, in the 2013 Australian Football Coaches AssociationWestern Region (AFCA) Coach of the Year Awards. Yet Gatt won’t be the only WRFL coach vying for the Youth award, with Yarraville Seddon’s Adrian Webster, Deer Park’s Colin Clohesy, Sunshine’s James Nardella and Hoppers Crossing’s Jason Rainbow also nominated in that category. Created in 1989, AFCA has been recognizing community football coaches for the significant role they play in the development of clubs, individual players and teams. The Coach of the Year Awards has been designed to recognise coaches across five main fields, including Auskick, Junior, Female, Youth and Senior. Another close category will be the Junior Coach of the Year with four out of six nominees hailing from the WRFL, including Williamstown Juniors’ Darren Gibson, Deer Park’s David Foley, Sunshine Height’s Renato Olivieri and Altona Juniors’ Vinnie Turcinovich. The Auskick Coach of the Year category recognises coaches who introduce beginner footballers aged 5-12 years to the sport, with a main focus on skills and enjoyment of the game. Spotswood’s Chris O’Keefe and North Sunshine’s Daniel Matcham were also nominated for the Senior coaching category, whilst the league’s first female Best and Fairest winner, Shae-Lee Murphy-Burke has been nominated for the Female Coach of the Year award for the Altona Juniors Football Club. The Junior section will be awarded to a coach who teaches children aged 10-12 years concepts of the game, whilst the Youth category recgonises coaches who help secondary school aged players foster a competitive spirit and develop potential. The Female Coach of the Year will be awarded to the coach AFCA deems has dedicated their time and effort into helping develop women’s football, whilst the Senior category will recognise coaches who have optimised the individual and team potential in an open age competition. AFCA Western Region Executive Officer, Graeme Pratt said the awards acknowledged and celebrated the selfless work coaches do week in week out. “Coaches volunteer their time to assist others and share their love of Australian Football, and provide safe and inclusive environments where everyone can learn and have fun. Of the 27 coaches nominated by this year’s AFCA Western Region Committee, 12 WRFL coaches from across ten different clubs are in the running to take home the coveted award. “This is also a time where we recognise the partners of the coaches who also make a great sacrifice throughout the year.” Premiership coach of the new Under 14B Sanctuary Lakes team, Derek Gatt said whilst he was excited to be nominated for the Youth Coach of the Year, he didn’t get involved in coaching for the accolades. The winners from all Coach of the Year categories will be announced at the AFCA Western Region Awards Night held on Thursday September 19. “I enjoy coaching because I just love watching the boys improve and it gives me the satisfaction By Kirstie Fitzgerald 23 WRFL FOOTY RECORD WEST FOOSCRAY FOOTBALL CLUB 2014 The West Footscray Football Club is seeking coaches and trainers for 2014 for the following teams: Division 2 Seniors and Reserves Under 9, 10, 12, 14 and 18. Having dedicated nearly 30 years of his time to the St.Albans Football Club and Western Region Football League, the last thing Mick Psaila expected was to win the AFL State Volunteer of the Year Award. “When I found out Bob Tregear had nominated me for this award, I wanted to get in the car and drive down to Whitten Oval and kick him in the backside,” Psaila said. “Whatever I had put into the club, I got ten times back in return, and it’s great to see so many of the kids grow up and forge successful careers and families.” The AFL State Volunteer of the Year Award provides leagues with the opportunity to recognises and thank the tireless contribution so many people make to our great game. After multiple nominations from many worthy applicants across the state, Psaila was selected by AFL Victoria as this year’s winner, making him the second WRFL volunteer to have won the prestigious award following Spotswood’s Len Murphy in 2010. Having also tried his hand at numerous other roles including Chairman of Selectors, Chairman of the Sports Club, Tribunal Advocate , Club Delegate on the League’s Committee of Management and President of the club for 11 years, Psaila moved his attention to the league where he was elected to the Board of the WRFL. “To be honest I felt really embarrassed because over the past 30 years, I have seen lots of people do some amazing work for their local football clubs and they do so week in week without being recognised, so why should I be any different,” Psaila said. “The main reason I got involved was because I didn’t like the way things were run so rather than whinge about it I put my hand up to help.” As this year’s winner, Psaila receives an AFL Prize Package including two seats to the 2013 VFL and AFL Grand Finals, three nights accommodation in Melbourne’s CBD, two seats to the official prematch AFL Grand Final Luncheon at the MCG and the chance to participate in the Grand Final Parade. Appointed as Chairman of the League’s Strategic Planning Sub-Committee in early 2010, Psaila’s leadership saw the WRFL create a Rules Review Sub-Committee which led to the adoption of the independent governance of the WRFL. “My wife was pretty wrapped to find out I had won the prize,” Psaila said. Having to retire from the Board to attend to his business earlier this year, the avid Richmond supporter continues to serve as the Chairman of the League’s ongoing Rules Review Committee and St. Albans Sports Club Board. “It was funny, when she heard I had won she just turned to me and said ‘finally after all these years you got something for your effort’,” he laughed. A promising young basketballer growing up, Psaila made the switch to Aussie Rules in 1986 to join the St. Albans Football Club. “The work Mick has done for not only the St. Albans Football Club and the WRFL, but for the development of grassroots football in general has been outstanding, and he is a worthy recipient of the award,” WRFL Chief Executive Officer Bob Tregear said. Not wasting any time in his new sport, Psaila won the Reserves Best and Fairest award in his debut year and was appointed captain the year after. “Let’s hope next time I nominate him for an award, I’m out of the country before he finds out!” Since retiring from playing in 1993, Psaila continued his passion for football from the sidelines, coaching numerous junior and senior teams for several years, and winning back to back flags in 1991-92. By Kirstie Fitzgerald 29 WRFL FOOTY RECORD WWW.WRFL.ORG.AU 30 Home of the WRFL Finals UNDER 18 DIVISION One Update The Australian political leadership underwent a change last Saturday, and so did the Under 18s Division One competition, with the St Albans Football Club booking their place in the 2013 Grand Final. Their opponents, Spotswood, entered the game as clear favourites, despite the Saints beating the Woodsmen twice during the home and away season. Finishing in second place on the ladder, Spotswood were the team most capable to knock off Hoppers Crossing as the competition’s best, after a string of good performances heading into the finals. Yet the Woodsmen’s premiership dreams are now done and dusted for season 2013, after suffering a 26 point loss at the hands of St.Albans in last Saturday’s Preliminary Final. St.Albans got out of the blocks early in the match taking a three point lead in the opening term, and continued to dominate for most of the game, extending their lead at each break. Whilst Spotswood had just as many inside 50s as the Saints, inaccuracy hurt the Woodsmen the most, having had just one less scoring shot than their counterparts at the final siren- the final score, 6.10 (46), to 11.6 (72). The Saints’ Steven Ryan ran rampant in a best afield performance, while teammates Jordan Mune, Jesse Bickley and Jake Romeo featured among the best. Anthony Fawcus once again had his kicking boots on, finishing with four goals for the day, to bring his year’s total to 51 goals. Jayden Farrugia and Benjamin Kuypers also added to their recent run of goalkicking form, adding two majors to their respective tallies. After concluding the home-and-away season in fourth place, St Albans have had a very successful finals campaign thus far, winning an Elimination Final (against Deer Park), a Semi Final (against Albion), and now a Preliminary Final, by an average Spotswood’s Under 18s team could do little to withstand a very determined St.Albans outfit in the Preliminary Final last Saturday. Photo: Lavan Ruban. of 45 points. Spotswood started their finals campaign strongly, with a comprehensive 56 point Qualifying Final win over Albion. They were then sent into a Semi Final against Hoppers Crossing, where they were crushed to the tune of 114 points. As restitution for finishing second, the club had a second chance, which they were unable to build on. The Saints on the other hand, now have their chance at premiership glory, but it’s not going to be an easy task. Heading into this week’s Grand Final, Hoppers Crossing is established favourites, by a country mile. The two sides met twice earlier in the year with the Warriors coming out on top in both occasions, by 97 points the first time, and 108 the second - in a game where the Saints were restricted to just eight points for the entire game. But as they say, anything can happen in finals football, and it doesn’t matter how many games you may have won or lost throughout the year, it’s how you perform on the last day in September which really counts. One thing I’ve stressed to the playing group is to make the most of this week, this game, this opportunity because you never know when, if ever, the opportunity will arise again. We have had an interesting preparation. Round 18 we had a bye, first week of finals off, then last weekend off. So heading into the Grand Final we’ve played one game in 35 days. Probably not ideal, but we have trained extremely hard, we have done a few extra running sessions, the intensity and skill level at training is at an unbelievable level so we are in the best possible shape. They have been an amazing bunch to coach, super determined, extremely coachable and love to win. It has been a tough decision to select the final team for today. We’ve used 37 players this year, and there is probably 4 or 5 missing out on the Grand Final that genuinely deserve to be playing, but that’s the nature of football. I’d like to thank my assistants, Eric Sorrell and Brad Jamison who have done a great job all year, Daniel Dimech for running the messages all year, Alan Moody and Paul Furniss the trainers and Dave Jago for being the team manager. And to Brian Robinson for just doing anything at all on game day to help!! Brad Murphy Hoppers Crossing Under 18s Coach FINAL WORDS FROM THE COACH: St ALbans I’ve been at the club for 11 years now, taking up various roles as an assistant coach for four years but this is my first year as head coach, and I’ve really enjoyed it. The year has been a lot tougher than we first thought it was going to be, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. We finished fourth on the ladder with 8 wins and 7 losses, but we have really shown what we are capable of during the finals series, knocking off sides who finished above us and living to fight another day in the Grand Final. There is a huge buzz of excitement right through the players and club for the big game. Whilst we’re slightly nervous, all the players are taking it in their stride, and enjoying the moment. Our preparation this week has been pretty normal, we’re just getting them all to enjoy Grand Final week and control all nerves that will come with it. All the players are a standout but there are a few that have stepped up over the past few weeks such as Ben Kuypers #9, Kirk Chetcuti #10, Jordan Mune #12 and Anthony Fawcus #16. While we all tend to focus on what happens on the field, especially around finals time, the Western Region Football League believes it’s also very important to recognize the ‘unsung heroes’ for without whom, we wouldn’t have a league to play in. These men and women, boys and girls work tirelessly for their local club, without looking for or receiving the public recognition and acknowledgment they deserve. While we are sure all clubs show their appreciation in their own way to these volunteers, as a league we also need to recognize them. An Unsung Hero may be someone who marks the lines, strap the goal posts, cut the oranges, clean up the rooms, help out with the juniors, pick up elderly supporters to take to the game and a million and one other things that get done around the club every week. All these jobs are ‘assumed’ by the general public to ‘just happen’ …….because they always have. In anticipation of the award, to be presented at the Senior Presentation Night held on October 4th, the WRFL Footy Record nominated one player from the final four teams we think are the most likely to WRFL legend Barry Priest be in the mix for the pictured with 2012 winner Barry Priest Medal Chris O’Keefe. for season 2013. Named after one of the Western Region Football League’s legendary players, the Barry Priest Medal is one of the league’s most prestigious individual awards. Held in high esteem by all players, the award recognises the best and fairest player in the Division One competition throughout the home and away season. This year, we have seen many great standout players from various Division One clubs, many of whom are sure to poll well. Minor premiers Deer Park have had an outstanding year to date, with Chris Stewart, Shannon Broadbent and Shaun Harrison leading the charge, whilst reigning Barry Priest medallist Chris O’Keefe has also had a stellar year for Spotswood and is sure to be a strong contender this time around. Despite missing a spot in the big dance this weekend, Sunshine’s Russell Douglas and Altona’s Steven Kennedy are also likely to be in the mix, after stringing together numerous best on ground performances. And who could rule Shannon Broadbent Deer Park Football Club 20 matches, 7 goals, 10 x named in the best. A new face to the club this season, Broadbent has had a stellar year for the Lions in 2013, taking up the role of a midfielder. Whilst he may not be the quickest player in the centre square, Broadbent’s work horse attitude sees him get his hands on the ball a fair bit, racking up numerous clearances each week. Whilst he specialises in the midfield, Broadbent has the ability to play well in any position on the field. A selfless team player, Broadbent has been a key asset for the Lions, feeding the ball out to quick midfielders and commonly found at the bottom of every pack. With a strong team around to support him, Broadbent should poll well this season. Steven Kennedy Altona Football Club 19 matches, 22 goals, 12 x named in the best. Despite a disappointing season for the reigning premiers, Steven Kennedy was one silver lining for season 2013. Dubbed Mr. Consistent in an inconsistent team, Kennedy’s versatility to dominate the midfield whilst also going forward to sneak a few cheeky goals proved a key asset for the Vikings. Racking up numerous possessions week in week out, Kennedy shone throughout the finals series, finding a lot of the ball in his Elimination match against St.Albans. A player who was a long-shot to win the coveted award at the start of the season could in fact have done enough to claim the league’s top individual honour. Russell Douglas Sunshine Football Club 21 matches, 12 goals, 14 x named in the best. Known as one of the Kangaroos’ hard ball getters, Russell Douglas has returned to the Sunshine Football Club on a mission. Whilst he may not be as quick as other midfielders in the competition, Douglas makes up for it with his hard working, blue collar efforts in and under the packs. Having being crowned the Barry Priest medallist in 2007, Douglas is likely to be the surprise packet of the competition’s most prestigious award. Chris O’Keefe Spotswood Football Club 19 matches, 38 goals, 9 x named in the best. Taking on the role as playing coach this year, O’Keefe has lead the way for the Woodsmen both on and off the field this year, with his determination and silky skills. Admired by many football fans, O’Keefe has had yet another impressive year, continuing his dominance in the centre square as one of the Woodsmen’s main ball magnets. Whilst his team will be looking to clinch the Premiership they so devastatingly missed out on last year by just one point, O’Keefe’s consistency will no doubt see the reigning medallist poll highly again this year. 41 WRFL FOOTY RECORD ‘Protect your players with the best’ » Largest range of strapping tapes and medical supplies » Used by Clubs and Leagues for over 15 years » Rewards packages available Club Warehouse is the leading Sports Medical Supplier, offering an extensive range of quality sports medical supplies.
