MESSAGE
Kerala State Bamboo Mission has undertaken
several initiatives for the development of the Bamboo
sector through networking various institutions and
resource persons in the sector.
When the Kerala State Bamboo Mission was constituted in 2003 the
artisans, NGOs, entrepreneurs who were engaged in the state bamboo sector
were functioning in an isolated manner. Various need based interventions by
the Mission helped in developing their skill, awareness, information as well as
in creating opportunities to network with related organisations/institutions.
Consequentially they were able to develop their products in trendy and
innovative styles. Kerala State Bamboo Mission could support the artisans and
other stake holders to find a good market by conducting the “Bamboo Fest”
every year at the prime location in Cochin. It is commendable that the State
Bamboo Mission has now taken the initiative to publicise this achievement of
our bamboo artisans/entrepreneurs by publishing this book.
As Chairman of the Mission, I am proud that the
mission is taking the lead in disseminating information
about bamboo products in the State by publishing a
coffee table book.

MESSAGE
Kerala is eminently suitable to develop the bamboo sector considering
both technology and resources. In the Western Ghats region of Kerala, most of the
commercial bamboo species are grown due to the favourable agro-climatic
conditions. It is already one of the major bio-diversity areas for bamboo species
harbouring
more than 25 species. Kerala has both traditional sector such as mat
weaving and basketry and modern industries like Paper pulp and Bamboo ply.
Bamboo can contribute significantly to rural economy and create employment
opportunities. The Bamboo workers in the State were mainly from the poor
communities in the pre-intervention period of Bamboo Mission and they were
producing only very low value products. Kerala State Bamboo Mission has made
various interventions like promoting propagation, skill development programmes,
awareness workshops, trade fair participation etc. These activities led to the
present level developments in Bamboo Sector in Kerala. The coffee table book, I hope,
will help disseminate the present scenario of the sector to the people at large, in India
and abroad. I appreciate the efforts undertaken by State Bamboo Mission in preparing
this book.
The Kerala State Bamboo Mission was constituted under the aegis
of Department of Industries & Commerce, Government of Kerala with the
aim to raise the artisans in the sector to an entrepreneur level by providing
necessary support from the Department and National Bamboo Mission, New Delhi.
I appreciate the initiative taken by the State Bamboo Mission in bringing out a
coffee table book about bamboo products; showcasing the skills of our artisans
to the public.

INTRODUCTION
The initiative of Kerala State Bamboo Mission
(KSBM) to bring out a ‘Coffee Table Book’ on Kerala bamboo products is very much appreciable.
Kerala State Bamboo Mission (KSBM) was constituted in 2003 under the
Department of Industries & Commerce with Shri. P.K. Kunhalikutty, Hon’ble
Minister (Industries & IT) as its Chairman and Shri. C.P. John, Member, Kerala State
Planning Board as its Vice-chairman. KSBM was formed to take necessary initiative and
interventions to provide the required support to the Artisans, Craftsmen, NGOs,
Entrepreneurs etc. for promoting the sector.
I wish Kerala Bamboo Mission all success for their
future endeavours.

The scenario of the sector in the pre-intervention stage was under developed and
unorganised due to lack of modern know how, skill development and lack of
information about genuine resources and its accessibility. These critical gaps keep them
in a stage of underdeveloped condition and unreachable to the competitive market.
After formation of Kerala State Bamboo Mission, the Mission made several
interventions to address the issues of the sector such as skill development training
for the artisans, Institutional linkages, trade fair participation, Training to Trainers,
Promoting propagation of Bamboo etc.
The focused interventions include promoting cultivation of bamboo, creation of
new designs for innovative products in the handicrafts sector along with appropriate skill development, promotion of bamboo based modern industries supported by

technology adaptation and development. By this, it is expected to create greater
business opportunities at various levels, especially among women and improving the
living standards of the rural people there by contributing to the overall growth of the sector.
Kerala Bamboo Fest is one of the major interventions done by the Mission. It provides
a platform for the beneficiaries to widen market and acquire knowledge about product
development. The first edition of ‘Kerala Bamboo Fest’ was organized in 2004. Since
then the Fest is conducted in December, every year, for the last ten years at Kochi.
From the year 2007 onwards, artisans / craftsmen from outside the State, mainly from
the North Eastern States are also participating in Kerala Bamboo Fest and in 2014 it
is being organized with National and International participation. From 2013 onwards
State Mission is participating in the India International Trade Fair (IITF) being held at
Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
These interventions help them to move from traditional to contemporary stage
and enable them to present their product in the competitive Markets. To tap the
opportunity in the Domestic/International Market of bamboo and related
products the need based interventions are required and it will be planned based on the
suggestions from the sector specific experts.
With the above aim, the Mission build linkages with prominent professionals like Head
of Industrial Design Centre of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai; Head of
Design Centre, National Institute of Design (NID); Civil Engg Department, National
Institute of Technology (NIT), Kozhikode; Senior Architects of Habitat; Official
from Social Forestry, Forest & Wild Life Department; Scientists from Kerala Forest
Research Institute (KFRI) and Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanical Garden & Research
Institute (JN TBGRI), Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme
(MGNREGS) etc.

With the suggestions of the above professionals, an Action Plan for the future
interventions required in the sector was prepared and was validated and approved by
the State Mission chaired by the Hon’ble Minister for Industries & IT. One of the major
achievements of the Mission is the inclusion of Bamboo propagation in MGNREGS.
Kerala State Bamboo Mission (KSBM) is in the process of setting up an Innovation
Centre in Ernakulam District in association with Kerala State Bamboo Corporation (KSBC) with the support of the above Institutions. The aim of the Centre is
dissemination of need based knowledge, support service etc. to the bamboo sector.
One of the major initiative of Kerala State Bamboo Mission is preparing a ‘Coffee table
book’ for the manufacturers of Bamboo products in Kerala. The book is a compilation
of various leading bamboo products being manufactured in the State. The book will
be a useful guide to the people in India and abroad for procuring unique bamboo
products of Kerala.

Bamboo
Bamboo, the giant grass, with more
than 111 genera and about 1575 species, occur in a wide variety of soil and
climatic conditions around the globe
and play a critical role in providing
ecological, livelihood and food security to mankind. In India, although bamboos occur throughout the country,
the largest area under bamboo is in
north-eastern India followed by the
Western Ghats. There are about 1500
traditional uses of bamboo broadly classified under household, industry, weapons, energy, transportation, fisheries,
agriculture, medicine and construction.
Recently, in East and Southeast Asia, especially in China there has been a rapid
growth of bamboo industries. The major reasons may be ascribed to development of new products like laminated
bamboo, parquet flooring, ply bamboo,
bamboo composites and bamboo charcoal. Mechanization of the traditional
sectors like bamboo shoots for food,
chopsticks, toothpicks and bamboo
handicrafts are other possible reasons.
Considering the large bamboo resources of India, which is second only to Chi18
na, the potential for developing bamboo
sector appears to be very high. In India,
136 species of bamboos in 36 genera
are found to exist. The North East India
holds the largest stock and diversity of
bamboos. Next to the N.E., the West-
to other countries like China, Malaysia, Costa Rica etc.It is estimated that
8 million artisans depend on bamboo craft for their livelihood. The annual turnover of the bamboo sector
in India is estimated to be around Rs.
2400 crores. By and large, this is a totally unorganized sector and bamboo
has always been considered from the
craft point of view and if otherwise for
pulp making only. This craft has been
practiced by the North Eastern
States for centuries as their prime
income source and, in the process, the
weaving skills of the artisans had
evolved to levels comparable with the
craftsperson from more affluent
societies like Japan, China etc.

Bamboo in Kerala
In Kerala, 28 species of bamboo are
found to occur. The main species are
Bambusa bambos, Ochlandra travancorica, Dendrocalamus strictus and
Dendrocalamus stocksii. Kerala has a
large number of thin walled bamboos
called reed bamboos (Ochlandra genera) which are used mainly for weaving
by the traditional artisans. Exotic varieties like Dendrocalamus giganteus, Dendrocalamus brandisii and Thyrsostachys
oliveri are also cultivated by farmers in
areas like Waynad district. Bamboos
from the Kerala forests are being supplied mainly to the pulp and rayon units
under concessional rates. Reed bamboo
is supplied to the artisans through the
State Bamboo Corporation. A unique
feature of the Kerala bamboo scene is
that 67.3 % of the extracted bamboo
comes from home gardens rather than
from the forests.
The artisans from the weaving sector
from around the Angamaly region are
supported by the Kerala State Bamboo
Corporation. It is estimated that there
are about a lakh people in the state dependent on bamboo for their livelihood.

from the early seventies onwards there
has been a great drain in the number of
artisans from the sector to semi-skilled
and unskilled jobs in the tertiary sectors
like construction etc.

Bamboo is locally called as Mula and
reed is called as Eetta or Oda in Malayalam. Bamboo and Reed industry is one
of the age-old traditional industries of
Kerala State. Bamboo is one of the natural fiber found In Kerala, and are found
in abundance in the forest and home
gardens. These bamboos are grown either in forest in large scale or in homesteads in small scale. Wayanad is one of
the major districts in Kerala known for
its thick bamboo forest. Other than this
many agencies are also involved in the
production of bamboo through proper
systematic plantations. As a natural,
renewable resource, bamboo is regaining its popularity in the modern world
through various application in day to
day life. From a raw material known
as the “poor man’s timber” bamboo is
currently being elevated to the status of
“the timber of the 21st century”.
In Kerala traditionally a large number
of artisans are dependent on bamboo
craft for their livelihood. The traditional bamboo baskets and mats making
skill are very popular, based on which
Kerala Bamboo Corporation had set up
their Bamboo Mat Ply unit in Angama22

semi-skilled and unskilled artisans help
each other to understand the process

help the craft flourish as a whole. Kerala
is one of the largest bamboo producing

Since ages, people in India have been
involved in making bamboo products
for storage and other domestic and agricultural uses. Houses, fences & gates,
various baskets, mats, containers,

are many institutions and organizations
are working in various sector for the
development of bamboo right from
production of plants, plantation to
design, value addition etc. which
support entrepreneurs investing in this
