INTRODUCTION: Since the beginning the 2nd quarter of 1999, field complaints reported failures of the “K1” relay powering the
circulating blower on the furnace controls CNT02789 (particularly in downflow models). More recently, similar
reports have been received on other single stage furnace models (see list above). The failure appears as burned
solder joints of the relay pins on the backside of the PC board (See photos on last page).
The symptom will be intermittent or no circulating blower operation.
DISCUSSION:
The cause of failure was determined to be thermal stress induced by high temperature swings during
cycling. This is prevalent on downflow furnaces but has been witnessed on upflow furnaces.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
FACTORY:
1. The use of CNT02789 has been suspended in downflow TDE models.
(See FURN-TRN-SB-11). The downflow units have been built with CNT02183. New model number
TDE-A-L1 identifies this change.
2.
FIELD:
IFC’s CNT02789, CNT02891 and CNT03076 have been redesigned to withstand the thermal stresses
mentioned above. The date codes on the controls for improved design are 0019 for the CNT03076 and
0023 for CNT02789 and CNT02891. See the table in the heading of this bulletin for the corresponding
furnace production date codes. Effective with date code Z373 (9/12/01), TDE-A-L1 will again use
CNT02789.
For upflow models, this is a “Fix-On-Fail Only” bulletin. Because of the higher level of failures
experienced in downflow models, the control may be replaced prior to failure where customer
satisfaction is at risk.
In case of CNT02789 or CNT02891 failure, the current replacement will be CNT02183. This will change in the
near future (back to the original IFC). Special instructions for replacement of the control on the TDE-A-L0 are
included in General Service Bulletin FURN-TRN-SB-11. See the table on P.2 for proper control selection.
Special Notes:
1. All controls replaced “in warranty” must be returned to the parts distribution outlet to obtain credit.
Also, “out of warranty” controls exhibiting the fault described above must be returned to obtain
credit under this bulletin.

All material and labor claims for this fault must be cleared with the local Field Service
Representative. No claims are to be made against this bulletin for anything other than the failure
described in the text above and photo on p.3.

Labor:
A labor claim will be accepted for one hour at the servicer’s normal rate for
each individual affected furnace. If multiple repairs are made on the same installation, one hour will be
allowed for the first repair and _ hour for each additional furnace on the same installation. Labor claims
are to be submitted via Field Repair Invoice (FRI) routine. If an extended warranty is in effect on the
furnace repaired, an additional hour will be accepted (_ hour diagnostics, and _ hour travel). The
Extended Warranty contract number must be written on the FRI. Do not submit claims through the
Extended Warranty System.
