ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | 21 a research entitled “The PhysicoChemical Hydrological, Biological and Socio-Economic Assessment of the Binalbagan River in Negros Island.” This was about the biodiversity assessment of Binalbagan river systems and its socioeconomic component. Initiatives in the Philippine Marginal Uplands, Visayas State University, Baybay, Leyte sponsored by CHED-PHERNET. Prof. Santiago also conducted a research on “Conservation Farming Villages to Combat Land Degradation: A Modality for Climate Change Adaptation” also funded by CHED-PHERNET. The College has also organized special lectures for the benefit of its students, faculty and the community. One is conducted by Dr. Johannes Bouwe Schiere of Wageningen University, the Netherlands on the topic “Making Sense of Agricultural Systems” and a special lecture on “Coffee and Cacao Production Technology” by Mr. Albert Gutierrez, alumnus of the college and currently Municipal Agricultural Officer of La Libertad, Negros Oriental. Orlando P. Cabugnason, a scholar of the Erap Foundation, placed 7th in the 2014 Agriculturist Licensure Exams. College of Arts & Sciences Anthropology The West Visayas Association of Museums, Inc. awarded the Anthropology Museum with a Certificate of Membership last May 2014 for participating in their activities for the past five years. The Museum was also recognized by the NCCA – National Committee on Museums as a member of WVMAI. The Museum had a total of 6,221 visitors this school year. Some of the guests were Ting Ting Cojuangco, Alan Pineda Lindo aka Apl.de Ap, Pinky AquinoAbellada, Solar News Channel TV Show production crew, Jaime As part of its service-learning program, Biology students conducted a water analysis of Bayawan City’s waste water treatment facilities, TSS monitoring of Bayawan River, and a total coliform monitoring of the city’s vermicompost fertilizer. Chemistry Fabregas, Commissioner Heidi Mendoza, Ms. Intercontinental 3rd runner up Koreen Medina, AKBAYAN Partylist Representatives, BIR Manila staff, Alvin Pang (multi awarded poet and writer from Singapore and Yale University); Navi Magazine-Japan Asian International Community Information Inc., and Mutya ng Pilipinas Magazine The Anthropology Department, through Prof. Cornelia P. Cadelina and Ms. Christine Batiles, sponsored the marketing of products made by SPED – Mabinay National High School students using recycled materials. The Museum Lounge located inside the Museum was completed last August 2013. Biology To prepare for the K-12 and ASEAN 2015 educational reforms, the Biology department conducted a review of its curriculum. It also identified subjects which can be offered for Junior and Senior High School under the K-12 program. The department, together with the Center for Tropical Conservation Studies (CENTROP), conducted The Chemistry Department has acquired a new highend instrument called the High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) which will be housed in the proposed Silliman University Chemistry Instruction and Service Laboratory (SUCISL). The newly acquired unit will help improve the capability of both students and faculty in research on natural products chemistry, pesticide monitoring, bioavailability study and other researches on antibiotics and vitamin analysis. This would also facilitate linkages with government and industry. As part of its experiential learning, second year students enrolled in Analytical Chemistry II conducted water analysis at the Wastewater Treatment Facility and Sanitary Landfill complex in Bayawan City. Dr. Paulina S. Aspilla was a finalist in the Natural Science for Region VII, CHED Republica Awards for her paper “A Partial Expressed Sequence Tag (EST) Library of the Economically Important Red Alga Eucheuma Denticulatum (N.L. Burman) Collins and Hervey. 22 | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 Prof. Lady Flor Partosa English The English Department submitted to the Academic Council proposals on new offerings. These are the following: Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, Certificate in Short Fiction Writing, Certificate in Playwriting, Certificate in Poetry Writing, and Certificate in Critical Writing. Several new programs were also introduced this year. These include Introductory German Language Course, Academic English for Graduate Students, and the English Orientation program. Prof. Lady Flor Partosa, a recipient of the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program, was sent to Skyline College in San Bruno, California. Her program covered the period of August 2013 to June 2014. Sophie Marie Lee, a fellow of the 52nd SU National Writers Workshop, received the 2014 Scholastic Asian Book Award for her short story, “What Things Mean”. The award is a biennial search for new Asian children’s story written in English. Isa Lorenzo, another fellow of the 52nd SUNWW, won the 2014 W&N and University of East Anglia Short-Story Partnership Award for her story, “Little Italy”. The firm Weidenfeld & Nicolson Publishing (W&N) partners with University of East Anglia’s creative writing program to showcase the best short stories written by its students. Several faculty members have presented their papers in seminars both here and abroad. Dr. Andrea Soluta presented her paper on “The Use of Filipino – English in Philippine Classrooms” at Chonbuk National University, Korea last November 23, 2013. This paper looked into the language use of Filipino students in a literature course. During the 2nd National TESOL Convention in Baguio City last September 26, 2013, four faculty members presented their paper on various subjects. Prof. Ronelaine Picardal’s paper, “The Role of Noticing in Second Language Writing”, is a study on noticing the structures that could benefit students’ writing. Prof. Warlito S. Caturay Jr., on the other hand, discussed how classroom writing workshops could be used to improve the student writing in his paper “Classroom Writing Workshop: Empowering Students to Find their Voice as Readers and Writers”. Dr. Evelyn Mascuñana and Prof. Myla June Patron also presented their paper, “Strategies for Teaching Speech Acts”. Filipino and Foreign Languages Department Chair Prof. Myrna S. Yape attended several meetings and workshops in preparation for K-12. One of the faculty members of the Department attended training for Grade 9 in Cebu this year and became one of the trainors during the training for Grade 9 Teachers from Negros Oriental and Siquijor. During the Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa held in August, the Department organized a monthlong series of activities such as “Tabo”, “Talumpati ng Taon”, and “Hapon ng Wika at Kultura.” The Department also organized a fund-raising activity for the survivors of Typhoon Yolanda. History and Political Science The faculty members of the History and Political Science department have been active in the servicelearning program of the University through several activities. One of which is the seminar/workshop on parliamentary procedures for student leaders in Sibulan and on how to effectively monitor the delivery of social services to the poor in Sibulan. Prof. Editha Enumerabellon conducted a research entitled “Survey for Cementing Pathways to Achieving MDGs”. The department underwent a seminar/workshop on CMO 46, particularly on the Institutional Sustainability Assessment SelfAssessment Document (ISASED) preparation. Some faculty members also attended workshops on syllabus review towards Outcome-Based Education on GE 2018 and on Senior High School implementation concerning relocation of faculty and college courses to Grades 11 and 12. Mathematics All 7 faculty members are at least master’s degree holders. Three of the seven teachers are already informed of an arrangement where upon passing the Licensure Examination for Teachers, they ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | 23 can handle the math subjects in senior high school. . Dr. Millard Mamhot and Math graduate teaching fellow Rhea Rheem Muarip conducted a research on “The Correctness of 2013 Election Canvass” that compared the national election pattern and the Negros Oriental election result pattern. Ms. Jenettte Bantug, Prof. Alice Mamhot, Prof. Teresa Guinoo, and Dr. Millard Mamhot also submitted a research proposal for SY 20142015 entitled “Schedule Map of Students and Teachers of Silliman University Under the Four-Day Class Scheme and its Effects on Teaching and Learning”. The department also launched on August 20, 2013 their textbook “Plane Trigonometry, A Calculator Approach” by professors Dr. Millard Mamhot together with Dr. Dennis Tarepe, and Prof. Alice Mamhot. The textbook’s significant feature is on the use of electronic gadgets in all its computations. Another book co-authored by the two professors together with Joel Adanza entitled “Statistics for General Education, A Keypad Approach”, was also released this year. Dr. Mamhot was also invited to speak at Central Bicol State University in Camarines Sur on August 15 to talk about his paper on “The Correctness of 2013 Election Canvass”. The said paper was also presented in the 2013 MTAP-Tertiary Level International Convention. suggestion on Philosophy Program. Seeing how the graduate program will be affected by the same reforms, it also revised the curriculum for the MA Philosophy program which will be implemented by 2015. Dr. Jeffrey V. Ocay attended the 36th Annual PHAVISMINDA Conference held at the Visayas State University in Baybay Leyte last May 23-25, 2014 wherein he presented his paper “Hegel Reframed: Marcuse on the Dialectic of Social Transformation”. Faculty members, Prof. Arvin C. Revagorda and Prof. Ferdinand M. Mangibin, participated in the seminar - workshop that prepared them to be part of the team that will conduct the de-briefing and volunteer program of the University in areas that were affected by the natural calamities. phySiCS Physics majors for this school year are recipients of the DOST, Portal, and Student Assistant scholarships. Several faculty members together with Dr. Hope M. Bandal attended the 36th Annual National Physics Seminar / Workshop Convention last April 2014. The Department also acquired new laboratory apparatus for both basic and advanced physics amounting to P451, 445. Prof. Josephine Atillo conducted three research studies: “Inexpensive Locally-Constructed Set of Heat Apparatus in Calorimetry for Teaching and Research”, “Determination of Specific Heat of Sand Samples in Six Coastal Towns and Cities of Central Negros Oriental”, and, “Designing/Making of Experimental Guides for Three Experiments on Heat.” The Department together with the Junior Philippine Physics Society (J-PPS) sponsored a Quiz Bowl and Tachyon Run for high school students from both public and private schools in Dumaguete City. pSyChology The department played an active role in administering pyscho-social intervention to victims of the earthquake in Bohol and typhoon Yolanda. It’s faculty and students were among those who joined the pycho-social team of the University deployed in the affected areas. Dean Margaret Helen U. Alvarez received last June 2013 her philoSophy The Philosophy department has started revising the curriculum for AB Philosophy Program for 2018 in accordance with the CHED memo 20 (2013). This includes the General Education Courses and also the Core Philosophy Subjects relative to the CHED Panel members’ Psycho-social Intervention Activity in Bohol 24 | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 license as Psychometrician and Psychologist. The Department is also preparing for the firstever board examination for Psychologists and Psychometricians scheduled October 2014. In response to the call of the Professional Regulation Commission, the department scheduled review classes for its own graduates and those from other schools by June 2014. Prof. Michele Joan D. Valbuena did a research entitled “The Mediating and Moderating Role of Athletic Identity between Culture and Athlete Engagement.” This is a cross-cultural study between Filipino and American athletes. SoCiAl WorK The Social Work department started offering this school year its certificate course on Community Organizing. It continues to develop short-term courses, especially in the field of transformational leadership. The service-learning program of the department this year has been focusing on Community Organizing in Palinpinon, Valencia, Negros Or. Its students were involved in several activities: proposed development with a women’s organization for a livelihood grant from the Department of Labor and Employment; preparation of documentary requirements to the DOLE; facilitated team-building and organizational development training sessions; and tie-ups with the Municipality of Valencia on sustainability projects. Three teams of students conducted needs assessment with the following sectors: labanderas (teambuilding and women empowerment), deaf- mute (developing self-confidence), youth at the Dumaguete Youth Home (self-mastery and the role of the youth in development). They also supervised trainings sessions based on TNA (training needs assessment) results. In the aftermath of the Bohol earthquake and Typhoon Yolanda, the department was part of the University team that conducted training on psychosocial processing among affected faculty, staff, students, alumni, UCCP pastors in Bohol, teachers and faculty of a partner school in Kananga, Leyte. It also led a trainors’ training for pastors in Bohol, enabling them to perform stress-debriefing and psycho-social intervention in their respective communities. Chairperson Prof. Emergencia L. Ligutom was also part of a training team for the Executive Leadership Program of the Career Executive Service Board (CESB) called SalDiwa. Several of its faculty were also invited as resource persons for seminars / workshops on topics such as case management, teambuilding, professional ethics, cooperativism, values enhancement, ethical leadership, transformational leadership, community organizing, people empowerment, family life enrichment and project management. College of Business Administration The College was given a Level IV Re-Accreditation Status by the ACSCU-AAI for the following programs: Business Administration - Business Computer Applications, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Management, HSBC Philippines Business Case Competition ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | 25 Office Management, Accountancy Program, and the Master in Business Administration. In preparation for the ASEAN 2015 and K-12 full implementation, the College has already initiated moves for a benchmarking study with University of Santo Tomas’ AMV College of Accountancy for the Accountancy Program. Asst. Prof. Wilma M. Tejero was elected as President of the 2013-2014 Council of Economic Educators in the Philippines – Visayas Chapter during its annual conference held in Silliman this school year. CECON is a council of economic educators in the country which primary aim is to improve the quality of economic education in the Philippines through institutional linkages and information sharing fora and conferences. Prof. Tejero together with Prof. Mirabelle J. Engcoy, Prof. Betty Jane Martinez, Prof. Stella F. Lezama, Dr. Silvestre Alforque, and Atty. Tabitha E. Tinagan did a research entitled “Impact of the 2012 Magnitude 6.9 Tectonic Earthquake on the Social, Economic and Local Governance: Case of Negros Oriental, Philippines.” The said research project was funded by CHEDPHERNET. Dayle Danielle Casianan (BS Accountancy), Evince Earl Columnas (BS Accountancy), Zevie Marquez (BBA Management) and Khristian Rei Rivera (BS Economics) bagged the second place in the 2014 HSBC Philippines Business Case Competition held in Manila last April 2014. They underwent two rounds of case problem solving, and were tested for sharpness of business strategy and effectiveness of presentation skills. Jayson Capundag (Mgt IV), Argie Victor Gadiana (Mgt IV), Jojie Ann Partosa (Mgt IV), Aljohn Salvoro (Mgt IV), Marein Assumpta Makinano (Econ IV) were recipients of the 2014 YMCA Outstanding Student Awards last March 2014. Jehanne Tupas (Accy IV) received the Student Excellence Award from Security Bank last February 2014. The College also conducted several workshops and seminars within Dumaguete City as part of their service-learning program. One of them was the Financial Literacy Workshop for Barangay Officials and Sangguniang Kabataan Officers. The seminar sought to bring awareness of financial independence to barangay officials and youth leaders in Dumaguete City. In support of the University’s Continuing Calamity Response Program, CBA students prepared 300 packed items (underwear and school supplies) with personalized messages of hope for kids. This was distributed by the team sent to Tacloban by the University in early January 2014. College of Computer Studies Twenty-five faculty of information technology from universities in Visayas and Mindanao were hosted at the College of Computer Studies for a two-day Outcome-Based Education (OBE) Seminar-Workshop for Information and Communications Technology. The seminar-workshop last May 22 to 23 was facilitated by Mr. Oliver Malabanan, consultant to the Technical Panel for Information Technology Education of the CHED. The University, through the College, 26 | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 was tapped to partner with CHED on the conduct of the seminarworkshop as a CHED Center of Development in Information Technology Education. OBE is a results-oriented approach to classroom teaching and learning, which is a contrast to the traditional input-based approach that focuses more on transmission of knowledge. The College trained Grade 9 teachers from different subject areas coming from Negros Oriental and Siquijor on the necessary preparations and skills enhancement under the K-12 educational reform. Together with the Center for Excellence in Learning, Teaching, and Assessment, it also gave preservice seminars and workshops to Education students. College of Engineering & Design Dean Dr. Earl Jude Paul Cleope presented his research entitled “The Visayas: Islands in the Seas: A Historical Perspective” in the 34th National Conference on National and Local History of the Philippine National Historical Society held October 24 to 26, 2013 in Cagayan de Oro City. The paper is anchored on the maritime perspective as analytical framework for the reconstruction of the history of the Visayas. Dr. Cleope’s recent paper is the sixth in the sequel of his collection of essays on the history of the Visayas. Technology (BPI-DOST) Science Awards. They were awarded on March 6, 2014 at the Mind Museum in Global City, Taguig. The award included a cash prize of P25,000 and an offer for a junior officer position with BPI. Rotea’s project was “Creating a Pavement-mounted Generator that Harnesses the Mechanical Energy of Vehicles in Roadways,” while Villanueva’s is the, “Road Power Generator: Micro-generator in Roadway Humps as Alternative Power Source.” Computer Science students, Arby Muay, David Mupe and Julianson Buereco were awarded as champions by the Philippine Institute of Computer Engineers, Inc. (PHICES) in the Maze Traversal Robot Race and Line Following Robot Race categories, respectively. Dr. Dave E. Marcial was awarded the 2013 Outstanding World Research Leader by the International Association of Multidisciplinary Research during the World Research Festival held last May 2013 in Davao City. The same body also gave him the 2013 Outstanding Filipino Research Leader award during the 3rd International Conference on Multidisciplinary Research organized by La Consolacion College. The department also provided lessons on Basic ICT Literacy to Security personnel of the University and some young people from its partner communities. College of Education The College of Education was awarded a Level IV accreditation for its MA, Ed.D., and Ph.D. programs by the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines (FAAP). The College’s partnership with the Francis Parker School in San Diego for its service-learning program is now on its 8th year. Senior Electrical Engineering students, Louis Gerard C. Rotea and Johara M. Villanueva, join the list of awardees for the 25th Bank of the Philippine IslandsDepartment of Science and The College has been active in several activities this school year. It sponsored the inter-school robotics competition and conducted the Annual Board Exam Preparation and Enhancement Program for engineering reviewers in Cebu. Preparations also started this school year for the offering of ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | 27 vocational / certificate courses in partnership with School of Agro-Industrial and Technical Education. Partnerships and linkages were also established with the following companies on scholarships, internship and employment opportunities for its students: Visayan Electric Company (VECO), Kyocera company, and, MERALCO Power Camp 2014. The College was also one of the units chosen by the Manila Electric Company as one of the participants in its prestigious summer training camp program for EE students. its faculty members also attended several seminar/workshops including the: Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers, Inc. (PICE) Mid-Year and National Convention, Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines (IIEE) General Assembly and Technical Seminar, and Architect’s Summit on Sustainable Environment Tourism. Dean Prof. Jesus G. Amiscaray Jr. also attended a seminar on renewable energy sponsored by the Department of Energy. In support of the University’s Continuing Calamity Response Program, the College has prepared three (3) designs and structural analyses of: a 1-classroom container van for Kananga, Ormoc, Leyte; a container van chapel for Catigbian, Bohol; and, a threestorey container van classroom building for the Architecture Department. College of Law The College of Law has been consistent in implementing a strong thesis program composed of stringent policies on topic choice, bibliography and reference materials, research, and deadlines. It also invited highly competent advisors as well as strong oral defense panels composed of experts in the field of thesis research. Among them were Dean Raul Pangalangan of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Department of Justice ASEC Geronimo Sy (recognized expert in technology law, competition law, cybercrime, and intellectual property law), Prof. Rolando del Carmen, Prof. David Padilla, and Prof. Marcelino C. Maxino. One of its newest initiatives was the teleconference capability for students and teachers that connects students to professors in Manila and the University students. It has also maintained its participation in Moot Court Competitions, such as the International Humanitarian Law and Jessup Moot Court. The College also joined the ANC Law Debates and Grand Law Debate. School year 2013-2014 also saw the continuation of “the Eagles’ Nest” (TEN) bar excellence program to help law students prepare for the Philippine Bar Examinations is also an on-going program. Its line-up of faculty also expanded with the addition of Prof. Virginia Jeannie Lim, LL.B., LL.M. author of several law books (Taxation Law), Atty. Golda Benjamin LL.B, LL.M International Commercial Arbitration Law, and Atty. Janette L. Icao LL.B, LL.M International Development Law, Gender, and Human Rights from University of Warwick, UK. College of Mass Communication The College of Mass Communication has found its new home at the 2nd floor of the Instructional Media and Technology Center. It has 3 big and 1 small classrooms, offices for the guidance counselor, secretary, dean, and faculty, a conference room, TV studio, electronic news room and the Silliman Net Radio studio. The student organization, Kapunungan sa mga Mass Communicators, have also their own lounge in the said area. The College also received a generous donation from the family of the first Filipino full-time director of the then School of Journalism and Communications, 28 | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 Atty. Alexander G. Amor. The same family committed P1 million for an endowment fund in honor of their late father. The donation was announced during the naming of a facility at the College as the Alexander G. Amor Electronic Newsroom. Val Amiel Vestil, a sophomore student, was chosen as Google Ambassador this year. This distinction involves developing programs aimed at the better appreciation of Google application for education among his peers and in the University. Michiko Je M. Bito-on, a junior student, attended the Ayala Young Leaders Congress sponsored by the Ayala Foundation, while Iphraim T. Cabristante, a senior student, attended the LEAD ASEAN Youth Summit sponsored by the US Embassy in Manila and the Ayala Foundation. Dean Dr. Ma. Cecilia M. Genove started her research entitled “Purposive Communication: Communicating in the Workplace.” This research project is intended for use by Grades 11 and 12 students and funded through a 3-unit research mandate by the University. The College is in the process of offering at least one master’s degree as well as certificate courses through SAITE and TESDA. College of nursing Four professors and a senior student from the College presented their papers at the 17th East Asian Forum of Nursing Scholars (EAFONS) Conference held February 20 to 21, 2014 in Manila. Assistant professors Rowena M. Turtal, Marnesa P. Campoy, Endyss S. Quilaqil and Maryan Vanslembrouck Osel Sherwin Y. Melad, along with senior student Kamille Roshiane A. Enad, discussed findings of their respective researches in the conference themed, “Scaling up Partnerships for Graduate Education and Research.” The researches presented were as follows: “Community Perception of the Benefits and Quality of Services Rendered by College of Nursing Students of Silliman University” (co-authored by Rowena M. Turtal, RN MAN; Rochie C. Cagara, RN, MArExA; Grace A. Gloria, RN, MHSS; Chereisle G. Pyponco, RN, MN; Lourdes L. Oliva, RN, MPH; Jocelyn C. Cadimas, RN, MPH; Jane J. Logronio, RN, MBA); “The Quality of Life and Perceived Health Education Needs of Type 2 Diabetic Clients in Negros Oriental, Philippines” (co-authored by Marnesa P. Campoy, RN MN; Evalyn Abalos, Phd, RN; Grace A. Gloria, MHSS, RN; Michael B. Obate, RN; Veveca V. Bustamante, RN, MN); “Lived Experience of Female Commercial Sex Workers in a Philippine City” (co-authored by Endyss S. Quilaqil; Evalyn Abalos, Phd, RN; Chanell Jan C. Concepcion; Emilia Ragay; Leila Joy T. Cazon); “The Lived Experience of Men with Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy in Central Visayas” (by Osel Sherwin Y. Melad, BSN-RN, LLB, MSN) and “Smoking Practices of Silliman University College Students Before and During the Implementation of Sin Tax Reform Law” (co-authored by students Kamille Roshiane A. Enad; Stephanie R. Bongcaran; Shenna Mariz E. Cadiente; Maria Katrina M. Cornelio; Jel Kithren T. Dalisay; Precious Jay T. Detabian; Bea Brenda M. Gomez; Dery Grace T. Kumar; Eula Marie C. Maquelabit; Kweena Lou A. Paliran). The University, being one of only eight Centers of Excellence in Nursing Education in the Philippines, co-organized the 17th EAFONS Conference. Asst. Prof. Theresa A. Guino-o presented a paper at the at the Human Patients Simulation Network World Conference held June 29 to July 2, 2013 in San Francisco, California. She discussed “Evaluation of Simulation Design Learning Among Filipino Nursing Students”, focusing on the experience of students in Silliman. She was the only Filipino presenter. Dr. Evalyn E. Abalos attended the 11th Annual National Conference of the Asian American Pacific Islander Nurses Association held March 28 to 29, 2013 in San Diego, California. This year’s AAPINA conference, which was co-organized by the Silliman University College of Nursing Alumni Association, Inc. tackled at both plenary and in breakout sessions topics reflecting on the theme “Vulnerable Population: Implications for Research, Practice and Education.” The College conducted the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) in partnership with the Provincial Health Office last November 2013. Health workers from the different barangays in Dumaguete City were taught IMCI, a strategy of managing common illness among ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | 29 children who are five years old and below, in order to lessen their vulnerability and reduce morbidity and mortality rates. It also involved two professors from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) in Lubbock, Texas to handle a course on the use of simulation as a teaching pedagogy in nursing last May 19 to 23, 2014 at the William Barry Thompson Hall. Dr. Sharon I. Decker, System Coordinator for Simulation, and Dr. Maria Christina R. Esperat, Associate Dean for Clinical Services and Community Engagement of TTUHSC’s School of Nursing, managed a group of 25 healthcare instructors from universities in Dumaguete, Bacolod and Manila. The College is also actively involved in meetings with CHED Technical Committee on Nursing Education (TCNE) in relation to Outcome-Based Education nursing curriculum which will be implemented in SY 2015-16. Two certificate programs, Acupuncture Certificate Program and the EKG certificate Program were approved this school year. Marian Maro Vanslembrouck ranked third in the 2013 Nursing Licensure Examination administered December 10, 2013. Silliman had a total of 39 passers and registered a passing rate of 96.97 for its first-time takers. Including repeaters. The University’s overall passing rate is 90.70 per cent. College of Performing and Visual Arts music department The College of Performing and Visual Arts was the Champion in this year’s Dumaguete City Sandurot Festival held last November 2013. They also participated in several fund-raising concerts held in Laguna, Cebu, Manila and Dumaguete. Dr. Jose Jacinto, an alumnus from California, USA donated 1 unit of violin with case. The College is preparing to offer certificate programs for the ladderized and non-ladderized courses as well as special lessons in coordination with the Extension Program Department. Fine Arts Student Anne Marie Lacson was a finalist in the Oil painting category during the 46th Shell National Students Art Competition sponsored by Pilipinas Shell held last September 2013. The Department is in the process of building new short term courses in preparation for the K-12 reforms. They also acquired four more computer work stations for the graphic design classes and computer related courses. Speech and Theater All faculty members of the Speech and Theater department are all Master’s degree holder. They have also designed certificate courses in the field of Speech and Communication and Theater Arts. The department has also taken steps to implement the OutcomeBased curriculum in its speech and theater courses. The department together with its students has conducted several donation drives to raise funds for the Bohol earthquake and Typhoon Yolanda survivors. Active participation of the Speech and Theater majors in the department’s initiatives has resulted to the staging of 8 major plays for the 1st and 2nd semester. Divinity School Theology Department The Theology Department, in partnership with different conferences of the UCCP, increased efforts at recruiting 30 | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 students into in the Master of Divinity Major in Pastoral Ministry program. This is a four-year professional degree offering. It also focused on getting more more foreign students for its Master of Theology and Doctor of Theology programs. Encouraging foreign students to enroll has been made easier with the Divinity School described as a Centers for Excellence in Theological Education by the ATESEA Theological Union. More certificate programs will soon be offered, including the Spiritual Care/Clinical Pastoral Education program. In anticipation of an increase in enrollment, both foreign and local, the Department is planning to propose for the renovation of Rodriguez Hall to house classrooms for Religion classes and the McKinley Hall classrooms for undergraduate, graduate and post graduate students majoring in Theology. The department also hosted the International Diaconic Management Seminar-Workshop on January 12 to February 2, 2013 with the Department as the host. This was in partnership with the Protestant University of Germany and the United Evangelical Mission (UEM). There were 20 participants from Tanzania, Congo-DRC, Rwanda, Namibia, South Africa, Indonesia and Sri Lanka who completed during the seminarworkshop the third of five modules of their two-year Master of Arts in Diaconic Management course. Included in the third module was an exposure to some community sites where the University has ongoing extension projects and mission work. Lecturers for the third module were professors from the Divinity School, School of Public Affairs and Governance and the Graduate Programs office: Dr. Noriel Capulong (“Biblical Foundation of the Theology of Struggles”), Dr. Muriel Montenegro (“Theological of Struggles: A Feminist Perspective”), Dr. Victor Aguilan (“Ethical Issues arising from Diaconic Management”), Dr. Reynaldo Rivera (“Political Economy of Globalization: Impact on Asian Ecology, Technology and Society and Governance and Management: Basic Introduction”), Dr. Jenny L. Chiu (“Corporate Governance through Strategic and Implementation Planning”), and Dr. Evangeline P. Aguilan (“Corporate Culture and Diaconic Management: Culturally Sensitive Management”). Dr. Victor Aguilan presented at different conferences, seminars and symposia. Among them were on Religious Diversity in the Philippines: A Philosophical Challenge presented during the 37th PHAVISMIND Conference in Cebu City, The Relevance of the Reformed Tradition in the Struggle for Democracy in the Philippines presented at the Study Seminar on “500 Years of the Reformation” organized by the United Evangelical Mission held at Insitut Pendidikan Theologia Balewiyata, Malang Indonesia, and, “Peacemaking Role of the Church in a Situation of Armed Conflict: A Philippine Experience presented during the International Conference of the Asia-Pacific Peace Research Association (APPRA) held in Bangkok, Thailand. In support of the CCRP program of the University, faculty members of the Department have conducted trauma healing and resiliency session and psycho-social processing for the typhoon Yolanda and Bohol earthquake survivors. More scholarship funds were also established this year for the Divinity School: Teodoro R. Yangco Foundation – Php24, 080.25, Rev. Religion and Peace Studies As part of the Institutional requirements, through the initiative of University Christian Instruction Program, the Department developed modules on Christian Life and Values Education (CLVE) for Grades 11 and 12. By school year 2016-17, the Faculty members who have the qualification to teach CLVE will move to senior high school but will eventually return to the tertiary level by school year 2018-19. There are also plans to offer short/certificate courses on Peace, Peace and Security, Trauma Healing and Resiliency, and Creative Ways of Dealing with Trauma. The Department also plans to hold a Peace Mainstreaming in the Curriculum Seminar-Workshop to help various units in the University for K-12 curriculum integration. Graduate Programs With the challenges that K-12 and ASEAN 2015 will bring, the Graduate Program has been maximizing the scholarship given by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) on Faculty Development Program. These scholarships are being offered to all full-time faculty members since 2006. The CHED scholarship program aimed at improving the quality, equity and efficiency of Philippine higher education as well as to upgrade the academic qualifications of tertiary faculty to masters and doctorate levels. The Graduate Programs offers also extended support to the survivors of typhoon Yolanda by donating P10,000 worth of Kids pack to the children of Kanangga, Leyte. Institute of Clinical Laboratory Sciences Starting this school year, the Institute of Clinical Laboratory Sciences adapted the OutcomesBased Educational Pedagogy in the delivery of the major course requirements for the BSMT Program. ICLS has currently seven full-time regular faculty members with the following specializations: MSPH, major in Parasitology (1 faculty); MSC – Microbiology (1 faculty); MPH – Health Education, Environmental Health, Sociology (4 faculty); and MA – Health Science Teaching (1 faculty). It is the goal of ICLS to open an MS in Clinical Laboratory Science by 2016. This program provides opportunities for SU alumni of the BSMT Program and students from Visayas and Mindanao to pursue graduate studies in Medical Technology. Director Asst. Prof. Teodora A. Cubelo is conducting a research entitled “Pesticide Usage in Vegetable Farms: Implications on Farm Productivity, Human Health, Food Safety and Environmental Quality.” The department garnered a 98.95% passing rate in the Medical Technology Board Examination held last August 31 and September 1, 2013, making the University the Top 3 performing school in the country. ICLS students Dinah Belle Abong, Esther Ann Nacita, Marc Daniel Nisperos, Kim Sarong, Daniel Sarte, Quennie Fritzie Toralde and Pretty Vilar received the award of Outstanding Student Creative Research for College for their paper “Antibacterial Activity of Epidermal Mucus from Scarus Species” during the 2013 Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits held in September 2013. Senior students Julia Christine V. Zamar and Rona Marie S. Namocatcat were awarded by the Young Men’s Christian Association as Outstanding Students for 2014; Gabriel Paulo C. Orosco received the Armed Forces of the Philippines ROTC and Philippine Army ROTC Cadet of the Year awards;, and Jeff Nicolo Palad was a delegate to the Ayala Youth Leaders Congress. Institute of Rehabilitative Sciences The Faculty & Staff held a Syllabus Review and Revision Workshop last 32 | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 March 28-29, 2014 at Camp Lookout, Brgy. Bongbong, Valencia, Negros Oriental to discuss the OutcomesBased Education (OBE) and the challenges of K-12 and ASEAN 2015. The faculty also revisited the institutional and VMGOs program and revised the syllabus to conform to the OBE format. The faculty members also had a discussion on “facilitating learning” assisted by the Director of the Office of Instruction, Prof. Juliet E. Padernal. Acting Director Prof. Cyflor E. Putong conducted a research entitled “Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of Parents in the Care of Differently-Able Children in Metro Dumaguete”. This study investigated the level of knowledge, attitudes and extent of practices of parents in the care of their differently-abled children. The ultimate goal of this study was to generate data as basis for possible intervention program of the University that would holistically address the needs and problems of parents and differently-abled children. Its student Ms. Danielle Hannah R. Enriquez, ranked the Top 8 in the Physical Therapy Licensure Exam given February 2-3, 2014. Institute of Service-Learning The Institute of Service Learning, was actively involved in several national and international seminars, workshops and symposia especially those spearheaded by the Service-Learning Asian Network (SLAN) and Servlearn Netphil. The Institute has also expanded its reach through its partnership in community engagement with other schools in the US, Europe, and Asia. The current partners are Francis Parker School of San Diego, California, George Mason University in Virginia, Chaminade University in Hawaii, Ingolstadt University in Germany, and 3 universities in Japan: Ferris University, Rikkyo University, and International Christian University. It also prepared for offering starting SY 2014-2015 a certificate program in service-learning. This is in response to requests from professionals who are based outside Dumaguete. Director Prof. Emergencia L. Ligutom presented a paper during the 4th Asia Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning held May 2014 at Lingnan University of Hong Kong. Several faculty members of the Institute were also invited as resource person in the 2013 seminarworkshop on service-learning at Miriam College and Central Philippine University held October 2013. The said seminar/workshops discussed the basics of servicelearning and its integration in the curriculum. Institute Of Environmental and Marine Sciences IEMS’ faculty and researchers were involved in three research projects in SY 2013-2014: (1) Development of a Conservation Program for the Irrawaddy Dolphins (Orcaella brevirostris) in the Visayas funded by ACCCoast of GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) , (2) Science Towards Environmental Well-Being and Resource Development for Society (STEWARDS) in a Changing Climate funded by CHED (Commission of Higher Education) through PHERNET, and (3) DENR funded Coral Rehabilitation and fish recovery of the Apo Island Protected Landscape and Seascape. The first two projects ended in January and March 2014, respectively. Also involved in these projects were the graduate students and adjunct faculty, Dr. Ma. Louella Dolar of Tropical Marine Research for Conservation (TMRC, San Diego, California) and Dr. Aileen Maypa of Coastal Conservation and Educational Foundation (CCEF, Cebu City). Jean Asuncion Utzurrum (MS Marine Biology student) – Elasmobranch Fisheries in Selected Sites in Guimaras and Iloilo Straits, Western Visayas, Philippines Angelico Jose Tiongson, a Master of Science in Marine Biology student, was the only researcher from the Philippines who attended the 50th joint anniversary meeting and conference of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation and the Organizacion para Estudios Tropicales. The joint conference was held on June 22 to 27 at San Jose, Costa Rica. The undergrad thesis of Tiongson, who finished Biology in Silliman in 2012, was also accepted into the systematics category. Titled “Morphological differentiation of two morphos of the seagrass Halophila spinulosa (R. Brown) Ascherson (Hydrocharitaceae) from Ilacaon, Island, Negros Oriental, Philippines,” the thesis was developed under Dean Dr. Janet Estacion. The Institute also signed MOUs with three institutions this year: Luce Foundation through Asia Foundation (implementing arm in Asia) and with Japan’s Hiroshima University and Kinki University. Medical School The increasing enrollment of students through the years is a show of the growing awareness and support for the Medical 34 | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 School. There were 162 in SY 2012-2013 compared to only 11 when it started in school year 2005 - 2006. Since it graduated its first medical students, the School has consistently garnered 100% passing in the Physician Licensure Examinations. In order to better position its program, the School submitted itself to an initial assessment by the The Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities on March 6-7, 2014. School of Agro-Industrial and Technical Education With the K-12 and ASEAN 2015 educational reforms, the SUMS faculty members are deemed qualified and 58 (81%) of the 72 faculty members have specialty and 19 (25%) of them have subspecialty qualifications from certifying boards equivalent to Doctoral and Multiple Doctoral respectively. Thirty-five (48.6%) of them have been teaching at Silliman University Medical School for 7-9 years. In May 2014 It started the Animal Production NC II program with 21 students, most of whom were scholars. Classes were held at the College of Agriculture, while the on-the-job training ia at the Provincial Nursery. The program culminated in August 2014. A special feature of the medical program is its faith component. Integrated into its program are the following: a seminar on Spirituality in Medicine, monthly devotions for all medical students at the Pantejo Chapel and active participation in the University Christian Life Emphasis Month celebration. The Medical School also inagurated its new building. It is a two-storey building with a floor area of more than 2,400 sq. meters, located adjacent to the Silliman University Medical Center. The new Medical School building has both adequate spaces and functional areas with CCTV cameras installed for the security of the facility and safety of students. SAITE’s main thrust is to make the University a Center for Training and Assessment by providing an opportunity for students who cannot afford a four-year course. One of the trainings conducted is for the barangay secretaries on minutes taking and a lecture on Public Finance with Prof. Leonor M. Briones and Hon. George P. Arnaiz as speakers. With the full implementation of the K-12 education reforms, the School is planning to revise the Bachelor of Public Administration curriculum as well as the offering of Bachelor of Science on Foreign Affairs. ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | 35 School of Basic Education Early Childhood Department The Early Childhood Department has improved its curriculum standards incorporating into it appropriate assessment tools. This is consistent with its adoption of changes under the K-12 program that have been reflected in the children’s report card. In order to better provide the welfare and safety of its pupils, the Department installed this school year rubber mats to its floors in the classrooms and CCTV’s in strategic areas. Elementary Department The Elementary Department has fully complied with the Department of Education’s requirement for the K-12 curriculum implementation in Grades I and II. Intervention classes, summer reinforcement for Grades I and II, as well as a summer sports clinic were also implemented. Students Francis Roy B. Albina, Luis Enrique P. Reyes and Ashley Simone R. Teves each won a silver medal during the International Mathematics Competition held in Hong Kong. In the Asia Math Cup in Singapore, students Jev Ulric P. Torres and Peter Martin O. Nasvik were awarded 2nd Honors, while Carlos Miguel Angelo S. Salazar was given 3rd Honors. The Department also won the 1st place in the 2014 Metrobank Dep. Ed – MTAP Math Challenge Division Finals held last February 2014. Faculty members actively participated in several seminars, workshops, and trainings on the K-12 and ASEAN 2015 educational reforms. High School Department School year 2013-2014 marked the High School Department’s first year as recipient of the Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education (GASTPE) program of the Department of Education. The program aims is to encourage public school students to transfer and/or pursue secondary education in Silliman High. A new set of Assessment and Grading System in compliance to the K-12 Curriculum was implemented with the roll-out of Grade 8. The Department is also conducting a research study on tracking the Grade 9 students in terms of Career Pathway in preparation for the Senior High School implementation on 2016. In terms of Accreditation, SUHS was again granted another 5-year Level-II by ACSCU-AAI Accreditation status last May 2014. Junior student Jude Martin V. Amiscaray was one of the two Filipino youth sent to Japan to represent the country in the Asian Youth Development Program in Okinawa, Japan, while another junior Chantel Dannielle C. Tan, was a delegate to the 2013 Saceda Youth Lead International Program in Asia in Hongkong and Beijing. Anchelle Grace O. Ho received a Credit Certificate during the 2013 International Competitions and Assessment for Schools-Mathematics issued by the University of New South Wales. Another student Jonnalene Rae Clavano, was a Gold medalist in the field of archery during the Palarong Pambansa held on April 2014. The Department also placed second in both the Dumaguete City Athletic Meet and University Intramurals. Twelve teachers, together with Supervising Dean Dr. Earl Jude Paul Cleope joined a national training to trainors training on the K-12 Grade 9 curriculum. Robert B. and Metta J. Silliman Library The Library has undertaken several activities for the school year 2013-2014 that emphasized their continuing commitment to support the University in these changing times. One of the activities was the launching of the Destiny Library Manager. This new library 36 | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 integrated software allows a user to reserve a book online, check what books one has borrowed or returned, what books are available or out to users, allows one to make a recommendation online on what books to purchase and many other features. To further improve its services, it also subscribed to Infotrac, a database consisting of 250 e-journals mostly on medicine. In partnership with the University Library Committee, the Library celebrated the 2nd Learning Resource Exposition (LREx) from September 2-6, 2013 with the theme: “Fostering Local Narratives and Memories through Books and other Learning Resources”. The Library has also distributed children’s books to Candau-ay and Balugo Elementary Schools on June 7, 2013 as part of the SU-First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor, Michigan joint program. A total of 871 volumes of children’s books were distributed to both schools. It also supported the project of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Negros Oriental Provincial Field Office, dubbed as “Libro Mo, Edukasyon Ko,” by donating 156 volumes (104 titles) of books last June 12, 2013. The project sought to reduce child labor in the sugar cane areas by educating the people through the provision of reading materials. It also participated in a consortium with University of San Carlos, Holy Name University, University of San Jose Recoletos, Cebu Institute of Technology and Father Saturnino Urios University for the purchase of Cambridge e-books for perpetual access. All the e-books selected by the consortium members are accessible to each member. The Library has also started organizing the Fidel V Ramos Collection this year. University Librarian Mrs. Lorna Yso served as ACSCU-AAI accreditor for University of Manila from November 25-28, 2013. Mrs. Yso, together with Mrs. Nenith P. Calibo, attended the 10th American Corners (AC) Annual Conference sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Manila last June 19-21, 2013. Actor Eric Quizon was invited by the Library for this activity to conduct the story reading to pupils from the Silliman University Elementary School and the wards from the Little Children of the Philippines. The said Conference aimed to provide the AC staff information and proficiency in using new technology tools, like the IPad and Kindle, and to enhance their ability to plan and implement programs using these tools. They both attended the Combined Information Resource Centers and American Spaces Workshop sponsored again by the U.S. Embassy on an earlier date in Manila. This workshop included the staff of American Corners/ Spaces of Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
