For its fifth round, the Monster Energy AMA FIM Pro Supercross Series headed back to Anaheim for the second and final time this year, and tensions were already rising for riders in both classes. In the Lites class, Broc Tickle’s first-place finish at Oakland the previous week put him one point behind his Monster Energy/ Pro Circuit Kawasaki teammate Josh Hansen. Hansen has been almost flawless all season long, and he has shown much patience when it comes time to work his way through the pack. Although he is the seasoned veteran, there are countless up-and-coming stars who are like sharks in the water, just waiting to pounce on his first mistake. However, the pressure of winning his first-ever championship might have been the cause of Hansen’s big getoff during one of the timed practices before the night’s events. Hansen claimed to have suffered a broken hand and fingers, and sustained a slight concussion. Though beaten and battered, the show must go on, and by the way Hansen rode, you could not tell that he had even been injured. Points Leads Open up at Anaheim 2 2011 0205 CA AMA FIM SX 5 PHOTO B Josh Hansen 100 Josh Hansen (100) takes a practice run on a track that was very one-lined. After all the spots in the heat races had been were decided, the Lites riders lined up at the gate to get ready for their fifth main event of the season. Coming around the first turn, heat-two winner Josh Hansen was in the lead. Everyone was talking about whether he should even be racing, but he put himself in the best position right off the start. Following close behind him were rookie Eli Tomac and Germany’s Ken Roczen, and second-in-points Broc Tickle was a few spots back. 2011 0205 CA AMA FIM SX 5 PHOTO C Eli Tomac 19 Eli Tomac (19) battled with Issue 5 Hansen and even held the lead briefly but had to settle for runner-up. him. Hansen was able to get another win, opening up his points lead even more. The track was very difficult, and there were hardly any passing opportunities. Tomac made an attempt at the lead a few laps in, but a mistake cost him second place, which was now taken by Roczen. Both rookies chased down Hansen, but neither could not make the necessary move to pass and take over the lead. Meanwhile, Tickle made his way up to fourth, but he was about two seconds back from the battle for the lead. All eyes were focused on the top three riders, as they were so close you could thrown a blanket over them all. 2011 0205 CA AMA FIM SX 5 PHOTO E James Stewart 7 2011 0205 CA AMA FIM SX 5 PHOTO D Ken Roczen 194 Germany’s Ken Roczen (194) battled with Tomac and stayed close to finish third. Tomac passed Roczen back, and then set his sights back on the number 100. Tomac was able to reel in Hansen and pass him, but in the next turn the Pro Circuit rider bumped the rookie back into second. Tomac never really regained his composure enough to pass Hansen back, and he finished the race in second, with Roczen and Tickle right behind James Stewart (7) got out front at the start of the main and stayed there for his third win of the season, extending his points lead even further. The premier Supercross class, however, was much more uneventful. Just a week before, James Stewart had taken the points lead from Ryan Villopoto. When the gates dropped at round five, it was none other than the number seven out front. Villopoto was in second, but series champion Ryan Dungey was nowhere to be found. Dungey and Trey Canard both got bad starts and had the more than difficult task of making their way through the pack on a track that was very one-lined. Up front, Villopoto followed behind Stewart, who had a breathtaking line through a rhythm section, where he would quadruple one of the obstacles. This most definitely set him apart from the rest – but not enough to lose Villopoto. Villopoto tried to make the jump for his first time on their Points Leads Open up at Anaheim 2 second lap, but he cased it badly enough that he was almost sent over the bars. This mistake created a gap between him and the points leader, which Villopoto was never able to close again. Chad Reed was running in third, and all three frontrunners gapped one another, with Stewart maintaining about a five-second gap between himself and Villopoto. Although things were going fantastic for Stewart out front, things were not so great for Dungey. While he was working his way up toward the front, his chain broke and he was forced to walk out of the stadium before the race was over. Stewart rode to his third win of the series, extending his points lead over Villopoto. Both riders seem to be evenly matched, but Stewart did have an advantage with his line through the rhythm section. Reed finished third, and Justin Brayton finished fourth. Even with the bad start, rookie Canard was able to round out the top five for the evening. CMC Golden State MX Nationals Round 1: Glen Helen Raceway Park By John Bethea Photos by Tom Corley/TCE Studios SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JAN. 16, 2011 2011 0116 CA GHRP GSN 1 PHOTO A Logo CMC It is already a very good year for Preston Tilford, as the 20year-old wasted little time taking the lead of the featured 20-minute, $1,000 Open Pro moto at the opening event of the 35th annual CMC Golden State MX Nationals at Glen Helen Raceway Park, and he went on to win the race without any challenge, even from the international field that had showed up. Riding an Alan Olson-tuned, factory-assisted Vance & Hines Yamaha 450F, Tilford took the lead from Sweden’s Fredrik Karlsson on lap two of the 10lapper and held the 17-rider field at bay for the rest of the race. Karlsson, riding a Husqvarna, managed to stay within striking distance until the midway point, when Mat Inda – who had already scored a victory in the 450F Pro event earlier in the day, in which he had run away from his nine foes while leading from wire to wire (and in which Karlsson had taken second) – squeezed Issue 5 by for the runner-up spot. However, by that point Tilford’s lead was just too much to overcome, and the trio finished in that order. Neville Bradshaw – at 27, the elder statesman of the class – worked his way from sixth on lap one to finish fourth on his MVRD Honda. Hard-charging KTM pilot Dylan Schmoke overcame a midpack start to take fifth. Other foreign riders in the Open Pro class included Husky man Viktor Bjkorland from Sweden, who placed eighth; Bulgaria’s Sean Mitcell, who finished 13th on a Honda); KTM rider Rikard Hansson, also from Sweden, who finished 14th; and Latvia’s Matiss Varro, who rode a Honda to 16th. Varro pulled out of that race after completing only one lap, but earlier he had shown his worth when he came from fourth in the 250F Pro contest to overtake the leaders just at the halfway mark and pulled away. Yamaha-mounted holeshot artist Cody Woodworth of Homer, Alaska, saw his lead taken away by Honda rider David Meade on the second lap, and he eventually slipped back to fifth. Meade held the lead until Varro caught him on lap six, and then he stayed in second, but he was looking over his shoulder as they approached the checkered flag, because Tilford was coming on strong: After a miserable start, he had charged hard from nearly last place to garner third at the finish. 2011 0116 CA GSN 1 PHOTO B GHRP CMC Tim Hickerson 52 The top Sportsman race of the day was the first Old-Timers Masters contest. Merle Hammer and Tim Hickerson (52, above) swapped the lead several times on the last lap, and the two Kawasaki riders hit the finish line nearly side by side, with Hickerson narrowly victorious. Hickerson, who raced as a Pro in the 1980s under the name Tim Rutherford, came back and easily won the second stanza for the overall. Supercross Arrives at the Ravine AMA FIM Supercross Series Round 3: Dodger Stadium Text and Photo courtesy of Yamaha LOS ANGELES, CA, JAN. 22, 2011 2011 0122 CA FIM SX PHOTO A James Stewart 7 3 AMA Supercross fans got the drama they were hoping for this past weekend as James Stewart (7, above), Ryan Villopoto and Ryan Dungey battled it out at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles’ Chavez Ravine on Saturday night, January 22. Competing at the stadium for the first time in history, San Manuel/ Red Bull Yamaha’s Stewart finished second to Villopoto after recovering from a midrace fall, with Dungey in third, Trey Canard fourth, and Joe Gibbs Racing’s Justin Brayton, on another Yamaha, in fifth. MotoConcepts Yamaha’s Kyle Chisholm rounded out the top 10 on a third YZ450F. Stewart is now Issue 5 five points behind Villopoto with three of 17 rounds completed. Stewart went to work immediately on Saturday afternoon, setting not only the fastest time in qualifying but also the only lap time under 52 seconds. However, when the gate dropped for the 20-lap main event, it was rival Brett Metcalfe who grabbed the holeshot, with Dungey in second, Stewart inside the top five, and Villopoto inside the top 10. Metcalfe soon crashed, giving the lead to Dungey, who held it until Stewart took control of the race from lap three until his fall on lap 11. At that point, an advancing Villopoto took over the lead, while Stewart remounted and gave chase. At the flag, the Yamaha rider was just 4.7 seconds in arrears. “I felt like I had the race, but the track was slippery and I just lost the front end,” Stewart explained later. “I am not too happy about that, but it still worked out because I ended up second. To just give one away is definitely frustrating. But I’m just being hard on myself – it won’t happen again.” Regardless of the outcome, this premiere motorsports event at L.A.’s historic baseball stadium definitely ended on a high note, as balmy Southern California winter weather enticed more than 41,000 fans to come out to the event. AMA FIM Supercross Series Round 4: Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Text and Photo courtesy of Yamaha LOS ANGELES, CA, JAN. 29, 2011 2011 0129 C Yamaha’s James Stewart (7, left) claimed his second victory of the 2011 AMA Supercross season and took over the series points lead in Oakland, California, on Saturday night. Leading 18 of 20 laps of the main event, the San Manuel/ Red Bull racer firmly showed the speed and consistency it will take to win this year’s especially championship – given his heated rivalry with two-time champion Chad Reed, who finished second; defending Supercross champ Ryan Dungey, who finished third; and Ryan Villopoto, who finished fourth after a pair of falls. Stewart now leads Villopoto by two points and Dungey by 14 points with four of 17 rounds completed. Trey Canard now sits in fourth with 71 points, just one ahead of Chad Reed. The series next moves back to Anaheim, California – just up the road from Yamaha’s U.S. headquarters – for round five next Saturday. Stewart defines the word “persistent.” After dropping his YZ450F in both practice and qualifying, he came back Issue 5 to win the first heat race. (JGR Yamaha’s Justin Brayton won the second heat.) Then Stewart put together a textbook main event. The enthusiasm shown by Bay Area fans – a paid attendance of an incredible 44,394 – was even more impressive given the cold and rainy conditions at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. When the gate dropped for the main event, a resurgent Reed took his first holeshot of the year, followed by Villopoto, Stewart and Dungey – the four riders many consider the most likely to be vying for the championship. But the race quickly went Stewart’s way: Villopoto fell on lap three, relegating him to fourth place – and ultimately handing the win to Stewart. On the podium, James Stewart (center) was flanked by Chad Reed (right) and Ryan Dungey (left). “This is a great win for me and the team,” a happy Stewart said after the event. “It’s a long season, and it’s all about winning a championship. The rain tonight made it a little difficult, but I am glad I came out on top.” “I’m glad to see James Steward take over the points lead early in the season,” said Yamaha Supercross team manager Jim Perry. “His couple of crashes in practice set the mood that he needed to get through the night cleanly, and when the heatrace gate dropped, he was on rails from start to finish. It was unbelievable how fast he was going in the heat race, and it carried over to the main event.” Results SUPERCROSS LITES: 1. Broc Tickle (Kaw); 2. Josh Hansen (Kaw); 3. Eli Tomac (Hon); 4. CMC Golden State MX Nationals CMC Golden State MX Nationals Round 2: Starwest Motocross Park Story by John Bethea Photos by Tom Corley/TCE Studios PERRIS, CA, JAN. 23, 2011 It might have been Damion Tackett’s 16th birthday at the second round of the 35th annual MTA West Presents the Muscle Milk 2011 Golden State Motocross Nationals at Starwest Motocross Park, but he certainly didn’t receive any presents from his fellow Intermediate-ranked riders; in fact, he might have even had a few “gifts” stolen from him in the day’s action. as they neared the completion of the first lap, tossing the leader down to almost midpack before he could recover. The Suzuki-mounted, Hall N Zahrt/ AXO/ Proto Painting-backed birthday boy immediately took the lead, and he now appeared to be in a romp for the overall. However, Open leader Shawn Gritten had other plans, and after two swift laps he had chased down the new pace setter and stole the lead away just as they neared the halfway mark. Tackett’s big grin was wiped away, and for the rest of the race it began to turn into a frown, as Epstein, making an amazing recovery, began to close in! 2011 0123 CA Starwest CMC GSN 2 PHOTO A Damion Tackett 7 Damion Tackett (7) topped the 450 Intermediate and Schoolboy classes at the second round of the CMC Golden State MX Nationals. Case in point: the combined Schoolboy/450F Open clash. During the second moto, Tackett was suddenly presented with a “present” when first-moto winner Dillan Epstein crashed his factoryassisted Monster Energy/ Fox/ Maxima/ Dunlop Kawasaki just a few feet in front of Tackett, who was running second, just Issue 5 Trailing by three seconds when the white flag came out, Epstein cut that margin to less than a second at the checkered flag. Although relegated to second in the moto, Tackett still had enough umph to garner the overall win. Even though it wasn’t a gift, he wasn’t about to give it away, either. Earlier, Tackett and Epstein had locked horns in the 250cc Intermediate class as well. Tackett had taken the holeshot in the first moto but was soon overtaken by Pro Circuit/ One Industries Honda rider Trustin Sgouromitis in the second turn, but Sgouromitis then crashed on lap two, putting Tackett back on the point. But then Epstein began attacking relentlessly, and he succeeded in taking over by the midway mark and proceeded to pull away. After again nabbing the holeshot in the second moto, Tackett was again overtaken at the end of lap one by Epstein, who went on for the sweep. Tackett and Gritten had also faced off earlier in the day, with Tackett prevailing in both 450F Intermediate motos. Every once in a while, you see this scenario: A rider is pulling away in the lead, only to crash, allowing the whole pack to pass by while the former leader tries desperately to get his mount up and charging again. He succeeds, and then tracks down every rider and passes them all to regain the lead for a comeback win! Well, Blake Green took that scenario a major step further in the final race of the day, the second Supermini moto. The scenario played out as described and, amazingly, he did it all in less than two laps, recapturing every lost position and pulling away again... and then had to do it again! CMC Golden State MX Nationals 2011 0123 CA Starwest CMC GSN 2 PHOTO B Blake Green 48 Blake Green (48) led the final Supermini moto, then crashed back to last, then passed every rider to retake the lead – and then crashed back to last again and had to do it all over again! Yep, he crashed a second time and slithered well back off the pace while the field sped away a second time. Bouncing back up, he tore out after his fleeing foes and once more began picking them off one by one, so that by the time the white flag came out, he had tracked down all but one of them – and that one, KTM-mounted Carson Forbes, Green caught on the last lap and came home the winner, with the fans in the stands on their feet showing their approval! Bostroms Blaze at Pokegama Ice Race Minnesota State Ice Racing Championship Series Round 2: Pokegama Lake Story and Photos by Tim McBride PINE CITY, MN, JAN. 28, 2011 The Bostrom brothers, Erick and Jacob, each enjoyed a successful afternoon of motorcycle ice racing as the Stud Club hosted round two of the Minnesota State Ice Racing Championship Series held on Pokegama Lake located in Pine City, Minnesota. Erick Bostrom, the elder of the two siblings, scored the win in the Vet Over 30 class via a wire-to-wire romp, just ahead of Larson’s Cycle’s Jason Larson, Mark Deal, and Brian Nelson. 2011 0128 MN MSIRCS Issue 5 Erick Bostrom (77) won the Vet Over 30 class. Jason Larson (44) finished second, and Mark Deal (31) finished third. Younger brother Jacob Bostrom’s two event wins didn’t come quite as easily, however, as he had to perform a dicey midrace pass on early race leader Jesse Edwards to secure the victory in the Dash For Cash that was held prior to the afternoon’s main events. Later, during the Open Pro main event, Jacob again had to overcome a mediocre start. He quickly began to put the pressure on Edwards again, and then slid past him on lap two – only this time their battle was for second place, because somewhere in the distance far ahead was a 16year-old phenom named C.J. Wise, from Andover, Minnesota. Wise had bolted into the lead at the start, and he quickly put an astonishing amount of distance on a notoriously fast group of ice racers. Unfortunately, Wise began to encounter a rear-brake problem, and on lap three he overran a corner and fell down, allowing everybody to rumble by. Jacob eventually went on to score win number two on the day, with Edwards and Erick Bostrom in tow. Wise recovered quickly enough to repass Jared Torgerson to finish fourth by race’s end. 2011 0128 MN MSIRCS PHOTO B Jake Bostrom 44 2 Jake Bostrom (44, on Jason Larson’s bike) won the Open Pro class. Jesse Edwards (89) finished second, ahead of Erick Bostrom (77). Early race leader C.J. Wise (99) recovered Bostroms Blaze at Pokegama Ice Race from a crash to take fourth away from Jared Torgerson (202). “My rear brake started hanging up,” explained Wise afterward. “After I crashed, I looked back and didn’t see anybody. I didn’t think I was that far ahead. I kept the clutch in to keep the bike running and got one of those dudes back anyway.” Jacob Bostrom, who has been a consistent front-runner in the ice-racing fraternity for a quite a few years, also competes in the A class in motocross during the summer months. He appeared to be happy with the win after having a less-than-stellar finish at the previous Stud Club’s ice race. “Last time, I finished second in the Open Pro class, but it seemed I spent the rest of the day lying on the ice!” explained the steely ice-race veteran, who also had high praise for Wise. “He’s a young, upcoming kid, and he was going well. But he needs a little more experience so he doesn’t do that [crash] while he’s checking out. I was going to ride my CR500 today, but Jason Larson offered me his 450; it has great tires [and] a little more grunt.” 2011 0128 MN MSIRCS PHOTO C Jorden Klejeski 98 Issue 5 2 Jorden Klejeski (98) won the 125 class. Shayanna Wilson (24) placed third in the adjoined 100cc class. 2011 0128 MN MSIRCS PHOTO D Open A class 2 2 The Open A class fell to race winner Cameron Johnson (85). Taylor Peterson (28), Nick Allen (319), Zach Johnson (18) and Matt Ernhart (5) rounded out the top five. The ATV contingent on hand was a large one indeed. Cameron Johnson scored a pair of victories in the Open A and Open Pro classes. Secondgeneration racer Anthony Markel sped to victory aboard his North Branch Syntheticssponsored Honda in the 450 B class. Flat-track veteran Nick Allen won the Vet class, and Melinda Bullford won the highly competitive Women’s main event. 2011 0128 MN MSIRCS PHOTO E 450 B Quad class 2011 0128 MN MSIRCS PHOTO F Women class 2 Anthony Markel (11) won the 450 B class. John Hogie (113) finished second, and Jake Cornelius (22) completed the podium. The Women’s class saw Melinda Bullford (113) score the win, ahead of a hardcharging Danielle Flansha (24). Heidi Cornelius (22) finished fourth, behind Amanda Flansha. Results MICRO OPEN: 1. Josh Fedder (Yam); 2. Justice Skow (Yam); 3. Dylan Semier (Hon); 4. Lucas Logue (Hon). BEG: 1. California Gold Cup Motocross Series Round 2: Milestone MX Story and Photos by Rodney Rutherford RIVERSIDE, CA, JAN. 30, 2011 With the atmosphere of an Amateur National, the California Gold Cup Motocross Series, presented by Kal-Gard, commenced the second of its five rounds at the sprawling Milestone MX complex. Some 457 racers arrived from Arkansas, Arizona, Kansas, Ohio, Oklahoma, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wyoming and from throughout California, and also from Australia, Canada and Japan – so this was literally a national as well as an international cast! Round two was under full contingency by Cobra, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM and Suzuki. Yamaha did not participate in round two, but it will be joining the roster for the remaining three rounds. Dark clouds greeted the racers and remained above throughout much of the day, producing intermittent sprinkles later in the afternoon. So get those tear-offs on and let’s race! 2011 0130 CA Milestone MX CGC 2 PHOTO A Justin Bogle 891 Issue 5 Justin Bogle (891) topped the 250 Pro and 450 Pro classes at round two of the California Gold Cup Motocross Series. Speedy Justin Bogle – representing Amsoil, Factory Connection, GEICO and Thor – raced onto the moistened surface in the 250 and 450 Pro contests. Bogle had a very successful 2010, culminating in two AMA Amateur National titles, in the 250 B Modified (11-1) and 450 B Stock (1-1-1) classes. Making the move to the A class at the 2010 Mini Olympics three months later, he finished in the top three in seven of his eight classes, winning three and finishing fourth overall in his only nonpodium finish. The 250 Pro and Intermediate classes were forced to run only one moto, after a very difficultto-score inter-class first moto. The Oklahoma racer went to work in the single 250 Pro moto that would count, scooting to the front early. He had another Amateur superstar in his wake, Rockstar Suzuki's Landon Currier from Washington State. Seasoned National Amateur rider James Justice was running third, and Southern California racer Hayden Kronquist was fourth. Bogle was in his world, staying steady and taking the one 250 Pro moto. Currier, Justice, Kronquist followed, and highdesert flyer Shawn Rhinehart, getting his bearings in his first Pro year, finished fifth. Bogle asserted himself in the first 450 Pro moto, while Nick Sanchez, Justice, John Pauk and Currier struggled to keep pace. Pulling away, Bogle savored the clean air. Justice turned on the afterburners and moved into second. Sanchez and Currier followed, and Matthew Lesage broke into the top five. 2011 0130 CA Milestone MX CGC 2 PHOTO B 450 Pro moto 1 Derek Stephens (173) and Brandon Campbell (631) battle for position in the first 450 Pro moto. Bogle had clear sailing as chaos erupted behind him. On lap four, Currier was putting the heat on Justice in the melee for second, eventually overtaking him on lap five. At the checkers, Bogle blew through for the win, and runner-up Currier was several bikelengths ahead of thirdplaced Justice. Sanchez toughed it out for fourth, and Vance & Hines racer Preston Tilford worked his way up into fifth. In moto two, it was Bogle playing the scratched record and repeating his moto-one performance for the win. Currier was second, and Cameron Rodriguez was an impressive third after placing 13th in moto one. Sanchez took fourth once again, and Justice was fifth. Bogle Boggles Them for Two! The top five for the overall 450 Pro tally were Bogle (1-1), Currier (2-2), Sanchez (4-4), Justice (3-5), and a consistent John Pauk (6-7) wrapping up the top five. 2011 0130 CA Milestone MX CGC 2 PHOTO C Brandon Scharer 307 Brandon Scharer (307) topped both the 250 Four-Stroke and 125 Two-Stroke classes. In the single-moto 250 Intermediate contest, 32 combatants were all eager for some moto jousting – maybe a little too eager, as a first-turn skirmish brought several riders down. However, Brandon Scharer survived the carnage and was soon in the lead, with James Herz second. After taking a scary face-plant earlier in the day, a gritty Chris Carrillo was third. Maintaining a hot cadence, Scharer put four seconds between himself and the second-placed Herz for the win. Carrillo, soaking up the pain, was third, with Blake Lilly fourth and Blake Savage fifth. Scharer was feeling his oats all Issue 5 day, taking overall wins in the 250 Four-Stroke class (via a perfect 1-1 score) and 125 TwoStroke class (with a 2-1 tally), and also placing third in the 125/250 Schoolboy (Through 16) class. Not to be left out, Savage (1-1) won the 450 Intermediate class, and Carrillo took care of his wounds and won the 125/250 Schoolboy (Through 16) class. Ciaran Naran has graduated from a top-five placer in 2010 to a consistent winner in 2011, doubling up with victories in the 65 (9-11) class (going 1-1) and the 65 Open class (with a 1-2 punch). Miles McDonald has been at it for a while now and is looking great for 2011; he hit pay dirt in the 85 (Through 11) and 85/150 Open classes. Monster Energy/ Kawasaki’s Blake Green has always been a force to be reckoned with in his age group, and on this day he triumphed in the 85/150 (1213), Supermini (Through 13) and Supermini (Through 16) classes, with no one in front of him all day long. 2011 0130 CA Milestone MX CGC 2 PHOTO D Shelby Ward 294 Shelby Ward won the Women’s 125-250 Open California Gold Cup title in 2010, and she is primed for her second title after working her way into the lead in moto one and then taking it early in moto two for two moto wins and the overall. The 250 Novice class was once again split into two divisions, with a contingency run-off at the end of the day, and it was Alex Widen prevailing for top honors. Mike Antles staked out his territory with a scrappy win over some tough racers in the Over 40 class (with a 1-3 tally) and followed that up with an overall win in the Over 45 class (via a perfect 1-1 performance). 2011 0130 CA Milestone MX CGC 2 PHOTO E Mike Antles 148 Mike Antles (148) bested the rest of the Over 40 and Over 45 ranks.
