RCS has classes to help you meet those goals – and many more. Through the Continuing Education Program, the district is once again offering a multitude of classes for residents who want to exercise their minds and their bodies. The program is run at no cost to taxpayers, but it provides a multitude of valuable resources to district residents. line dance? • Need help training Fido? • Would you like to find a fun way to stay fit? Course offerings RCS is proud to offer a wide array of courses, ranging from classes that help participants get the most out of a hobby, to classes designed to expand or cultivate professional skills. This semester’s Continuing Education brochure is organized by these topics: • Aquatics: from tot swimming lessons to Aqua Zumba, the RCS Aquatics Center has it all • Career Training: learn about ways to enhance or change your career • Driving: classes for new and experienced drivers alike • Home & Lifestyle: explore dog training basics and quilting • Sports & Fitness: opportunities for health and wellness include basketball to yoga and everything in between Directions for registering for a course are on page two. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. The number of participants in each class is limited. To register for a course: 1. Complete a registration form (found on page 7) for each class. 2. Write a separate check payable to RCS Central Schools for the registration fee for each course. 3. Either mail the check and registration form to RCS Continuing Education, P.O. Box 100, Ravena, NY 12143 or register in person on Wednesday, Sept. 9 from 6:30-8 p.m. in the lobby of the Aquatics Center at the high school, Route 9W, Ravena. Registrants will not receive confirmation of registration, but will receive notification if the class they register for is canceled. SENIOR CITIZENS Senior citizens living in the RCS school district will receive a 10-percent discount off classes where indicated in this brochure. To receive the discount, a senior citizen should indicate on the registration form if he or she is 65 years or older and include his or her birth date. pool AQUATICS COURSES RCS offers a variety of aquatics programming for people of all abilities. Whether you are an adult who wants to get into better shape in the pool or a parent who wants your child to learn swimming skills before he or she can walk, RCS has a course for you. MORNING SWIM PROGRAM • Dates: Mondays-Fridays; September-February • Time: 5:30-7:20 a.m. • Location: Aquatics Center • Fee: RCS residents – $110, Non-residents – $220 The morning swim program provides an opportunity for professionals and exercise enthusiasts in our community to fulfill their exercise needs. PAULINE’S AQUA ANIMAL CHALLENGE • Dates: Eight-week sessions begin Sept. 14 & Jan. 4. Four-week session begins Nov.16. Classes meet Mondays. • Time: 5:30-6:30 p.m. • Location: Aquatics Center • Fee: $32 for 4-week session, $65 for 8-week session • Instructor: Pauline Buck Pauline’s Aqua Animal Challenge is a total body workout that will be done in the shallow area of the pool. The registration fee will be refunded if a course is cancelled or if a student withdraws from a course before the start of the first class. No refunds will be made once a course has started. An attempt will be made to notify any registrant whose class is cancelled. We will shake those hips, stomp those feet, kick up those heels like never before. The impact is low yet you will burn more calories than on land because of the resistance of the water. This water exercise program is designed to obtain optimum physical fitness. AQUA FITNESS • Dates: 10-week sessions begin on Sept. 15 and Jan. 5. Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays. • Time: 7-8 p.m. • L ocation: Aquatics Center • F ee: $65 for RCS residents (2 nights), $75 for Nonresidents (2 nights), $35 for RCS residents (1 night), $40 for Nonresidents (1 night), Senior discount available! • Instructor: Elsie Wilsey Aqua Fitness is a moderate- to high-level aerobic workout, including a deep-water jogging segment. Classes meet Sundays • Time: 3 p.m. • Location: Aquatics Center • Instructor: Chris Dottino • Fee: RCS residents – $30, Non-residents – $45 Parent-Tot Swim classes are open to parents and their children between the ages of 18 months and four years. This is a great opportunity not only for fun but for parents to help their children feel comfortable with water. AQUA ZUMBA • Dates: 10-week sessions begin on Sept. 16 and Jan. 6. Classes are Wednesdays • Time: 5-6 p.m. • Location: Aquatics Center • Fee: $80 for 10 weeks • Instructor: Julie Padilla This Zumba aquatic revolution offers an aquatic workout with all the benefits, fun and excitement of a Zumba Class. Aqua Zumba works on aerobic endurance, muscular resistance, flexibility and joint mobility in a high-intensity, lowimpact environment. Aquatic exercise is ideal for strengthening after injury, conditioning for older or out-of-shape individuals, or people of all fitness levels who love the water and want to work out to the international rhythms of Zumba fitness in an energetic, pool party atmosphere. Please wear water shoes and bring bottled water and towel. LIFEGUARD PREP • Dates: Seven-week sessions begin on Sept. 27 & Jan. 10, Classes meet Sundays • Time: 2-3 p.m. • Location: Aquatics Center • Fee: $55 for RCS residents, $60 for Non-residents. You must be 13+ to take this course. • Instructor: Chris Dottino Aquatics Center Basics REGISTRATION Aquatics Center users must present their ID card each time they use the facility. FEE SCHEDULE: OPEN AND LAP SWIM YEARLY PASSES All fees cover a year’s worth of unlimited access to the RCS Aquatics Center during scheduled open and lap swimming times. • RCS Residents: $30 • Non-Resident Adults: $125 • Non-Resident Seniors: $100 • Non-District Students: $100 • Non-Resident Family Pass: $275 for up to five family members living at the same address • Guests: Visitors who do not have, or cannot display, a registration card will be asked to pay $2 per visit – up to three visits. Non-card holders must sign in when entering the facility and will be limited to a maximum of three visits per year. This course does not issue certifications. The class will build on basic swimming skills to develop technique in freestyle and breaststroke. It will develop the strength and endurance needed for the lifeguarding physical pre-requisite in swimming, treading water, and the brick retrieval. This course will also instruct some basic water rescue techniques taught in both Red Cross and Boy Scouting lifeguarding classes. A minimum of two students is required for the class to run. Classes meet Saturdays. • Time: 3:20-3:50 p.m. • Location: Aquatics Center • Fee: $55 for RCS residents, $60 for Non-residents. This course is for children ages 4-5. • Instructor: Chris Dottino This is a seven-week course designed for children between the ages of 4 and 5 to better accommodate them in the water without the assistance of a parent or guardian. Children will work on the basics of swimming that includes but is not limited to; blowing bubbles, front and back floating with and without support, kicking, and paddling. Swim belts will be used and provided during the class for the children to use. We will maintain a one instructor to five children ratio during the class. Class is limited to 15 seats. RED CROSS LEARN TO SWIM • Dates: Seven-week sessions begin Sept. 19, Nov. 7 and Jan. 9. Classes meet Saturdays. • Time: 4-4:40 p.m. for Level 1, 4:45-5:25 p.m. for Levels 2 & 3, 5:30-6:10 p.m. for Levels 4,5 & 6. • Location: Aquatics Center • Fee: $55 for RCS residents, $60 for Non-residents. This course is for children ages 5-12. A Water Safety Instructor oversees teaching this program. Children are introduced to personal safety and basic water skills appropriate to their level of experience. This class promotes confidence in the beginner skills and emphasizes safety in and around the water. Adults do not have to accompany children in the pool, but are required to be at poolside during the lesson. Make-up lessons are not available. Sessions will be coordinated by ability level of the swimmers. Swimmers can be tested at 3 p.m. on the first day of lessons or during open swim the Friday night before. career CAREER TRAINING GETTING PAID TO TALK: VOICE-OVERS AS A PROFESSION • Date: Thursday, Oct. 29 • Time: 6:30-9 p.m. • Location: MS Library • Fee: $10 • Instructor: Creative Voice Development Group This introductory class will explore the many aspects of voice-over work for television, film, radio and narration, as well as emerging opportunities for voice in multimedia. Participants learn how to prepare a demo tape and how to bypass the competition and get the job. Class activities include listening to professional voiceovers as well as preparing and reading copy. lifestyle HOME & LIFESTYLE DOG TRAINING BASICS • Dates: 10-week sessions begin Sept. 16. Classes meet Wednesdays. • Time: Session I – 7-8 p.m. Session II – 8-9 p.m. • Location: HS Cafeteria • Fee: $40 • Instructor: Lesley Hendry Training concepts for enjoyable canine companionship. Initially the class will work on long-distance recalls, stays and socialization, etc. As the weeks go by, we’ll work on heeling, retrieving, jumping, etc. All dogs must have current vaccinations. Class size is limited to 12 dogs. Registrants should indicate their choice of session on their registration forms. Classes meet Thursdays. • Time: 6-8 p.m. • Location: MS Room 120 • Fee: $40 • Instructor: MaryAnn Peters Quilts with new shapes and a ruler to make it all possible! We have so many wonderful choices of fabrics these days. Whether you have fabrics and are wondering what to make, or you have not found just the right pattern, this class can help you explore some ideas. We will explore new piecing techniques with a variety of options in this new sidekick ruler technique class. Sewing machine is required. E-mail mp14quilts@hotmail.com to order pattern and ruler for the first class. FLOWER ARRANGING • Dates: Eight-week session begins Sept. 29. Classes meet Tuesdays. • Time: 6-8 p.m. • Location: HS Room 63 • Fee: $60 • Instructor: Phebe Archibald This program will include the different types of fresh flower arrangements, the proper treatment of flowers, how to increase the life of flowers, decorating with flowers and greens, and different crafts using flowers and ribbons. Each student will do his/her own flower arrangement or flower craft to take home each week. Students will be required to bring to class a sharp (pairing or jackknife) for cutting flower stems. Scissors are acceptable, but not recommended for cutting flowers. There will be a $20 materials fee for each class to be paid one week in advance that will be collected by the instructor. Please bring 2 weeks material fees to the first class, which will pay for the first and last class. Limit of 12 students. Phebe Archibald was the owner of Phebe’s Florist and Gifts in Guilderland for 23 years. driving DRIVING COURSES DEFENSIVE DRIVING • Dates: Monday/Tuesday, Oct. 19 and 20 • Time: 6-9 p.m. • Location: HS Room 34A • Fee: $40 • Instructor: Adirondack Driving School The Department of Motor Vehicles’ points/insurance reduction program is a six-hour, classroom-only program. Participants will watch a video of real case studies and discuss defensive driving strategies. All principle vehicle operators who complete the program will receive a 10-percent reduction on their renewal of vehicle liability and collision insurance for three consecutive years. Participants who also take secondary school driver education will receive an additional 10-percent reduction on their insurance upon the completion of that course. Drivers who complete the course will also receive a fourpoint penalty reduction off their driving records from the previous 18 months. Must meet 10-student minimum enrollment. FIVE-HOUR PRE-LICENSING • Date: Wednesday, Oct. 21 • Time: 3-8 p.m. • Location: HS Room 34A • Fee: $35 • Instructor: Adirondack Driving School This course is required of all drivers prior to taking the New York State road test. Students must have a valid New York State drivers’ permit to enroll and must bring it to class. We will be hooping on the waist, hips and off-body while moving and dancing with the hoop.
